After their marriage in 1956 they moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he attended Kansas University and earned his master’s degree in geology.

At about the same time the tenured professor returned, the registrar position opened up and he became the registrar of Colby College in 1966, where he served for 40 years until retiring in 2006. At his retirement dinner, he was remembered and revered for his wisdom and steady hand guiding both students and faculty through the maze of Colby requirements, and also for the messiest office at Colby – although he always knew exactly where to put his hands on whatever was needed.

There are so many dimensions to George: husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, birder, musician, sports fanatic, and pun master extraordinaire. He was very involved in his community. George had itchy feet, traveling frequently inside and outside the United States and especially loved traveling with family and sharing the people and places he found special. When visiting favorite places, he always wanted to be useful and helped wherever he could, whether it was a daughter’s move or house project, or lobstering and haying while visiting friends in Prince Edward Island, which was an annual trip for more than 45 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Jean Coleman, and niece Pam.

George is survived by his sister Chase; daughters, Sue and husband Tom, Leigh and husband Alan, and Beth and husband Jimmy; grandchildren, Tess and fiancé Fredrik, Caitlin and husband Harold, Austin and fiancé Jamien, Colin and wife Amelia, Ted and wife Elicia, Niklas, and Samantha; great-grandchildren Harold, Minna, Alex, and Alison; nephews Edward and Christopher; niece Peggy; and numerous friends who became family.

Bob and Gerry created a wonderful family consisting of four boys and provided a loving environment for them at their home in Waterville, and during the summers at their camp on Great Pond. Family vacations included many trips to Florida and traveling out west in their motorhome. Bob also enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, tennis, hunting and golf.

In their retirement years, Bob and Gerry maintained a home in Zephyrhills, Florida, where they would spend their winters, enjoying the warm weather golfing and playing shuffleboard. The family grew up Catholic and would regularly attend Sacred Heart Church, in Waterville.

Bob had a lifelong love of aviation. This started when, as a young boy he would watch the USAAF planes entering the landing pattern for a stopover in Waterville on their way to Europe during World War II. He would frequently hop on his bicycle and ride from his home, on Edgemont Avenue, all the way to the airport to watch them come and go. Bob took flying lessons in the early 1970s and became a private pilot, owning two airplanes along the way. He was also an avid reader of non-fiction books and a history buff, especially with regards to World War II airplanes and ships, had remarkable knowledge on those subjects and many others.

He had many lifelong friends, and it was unusual to for him go anywhere in town without someone saying, “Hello Bob, how are you?”

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Gerry in 2014; and only sibling, his brother, Gene Pellerin in 2020.

Bob is survived by his sons Robert William Jr. and wife Julie, of Sidney, Michael James and wife Claudia, of Winslow, Jeffrey Lee and wife Kathie, of Scarborough, and Brian Scott and wife Amanda, of Midlothian, Texas; nine grandchildren, Tiffany, Kristen, Danielle, Marc, Jamie, Jacob, Alec, Sydney and Noah; as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scotts Funeral Home, 445 Waterville Rd., Skowhegan, ME 04976.

KERMIT C. KNOWLES

WATERVILLE – Calvin Knowles, 90, passed away peacefully Friday, March 24, 2023, at the MaineGeneral Comfort Care Unit, in Augusta, with a copy of the newest Golf Digest by his side. “Kermie” or “Zike” to some, was born July 7, 1932, in Portland, to Harry and Bertha Knowles.

South Portland was the family home during the Great Depression and World War II years. After the war the family moved back to the family farm in Bingham.

Kermit’s lifelong love of sports began with his involvement in the Bingham High School baseball and basketball teams. Here he excelled in both sports and at one time held the BHS scoring record for most points scored in a basketball game. He is also credited with naming the Bingham High School mascot the “Cavaliers”. He continued to play semi-pro baseball for the Farmington Flyers after high school.

Kermit graduated college from Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green, Ohio, where he earned an athletic scholarship for baseball and wrestling. He stayed involved with BGSU sports throughout his life as a member of the alumni association and visiting the campus for functions in later years. He was always “in the know” of the current status of BGSU sports and could always be found with “Falcon” memorabilia. It was here that he first discovered his lifelong love for the game of golf. Kermit later pursued graduate studies and completed a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono.

Kermit started his teaching and coaching career at Pennell Institute, in Gray, and then on to Livermore Falls High School. After LFHS he moved back to Bingham and worked with his father as an electrical contractor until 1968 when he accepted a teaching and basketball coaching position at Unity College, in Unity. Here he enjoyed success with the Unity College “Rams” basketball teams in the late ’60s and early 1970s. After Unity College he taught physical education and coached girls’ basketball at Upper Kennebec Valley MHS, in Bingham. He finished his professional teaching career as the principle at Jackman High School.

His love of sports was consistent throughout his life with golf always at the forefront. “Zike” was a member at Lakewood Golf Course, in Madison, for many years where he won several club championships before joining the Waterville Country Club in the early 1990s. During the golf season “Kermie” could always be found at his second home, the WCC. He seldom missed playing in the Friday scrambles with his buddies and was a proud member of the 80/20 club at WCC. He traveled later in life to Ireland and Scotland to play in the home of golf and spent many winters in Florida golfing and visiting with family. May he forever play golf in the Golf Kingdom.

He left behind many loving family traditions. Most prominent was holiday cards. You could always count on getting a Charlie Brown card for birthdays or holidays from him.

Kermit Knowles is survived by his brother, Duane Knowles; son Terry, daughter-in-law Nancy, daughter Michele, son-in-law Casey, daughter Kimberly; grandchildren Zachery, Brooke, Taylor and Corey; nephew David; niece Laura; and great-grandchildren.

CARLETON E. JONES

VASSALBORO – Carleton E. Jones, 88, of Vassalboro, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2023, at his home. Carleton was born September 2, 1934, in Waterville, the son of the late Allen and Phyllis (Leith) Jones.

Carleton grew up in Stoneham, Massachusetts. In 1963, he moved to Maine to the farm of his grandfather, Ezra Jones. Carleton taught machine tool at Waterville High School until his retirement in 1989. Many former students over the years visited him to discuss the successful careers they went on to achieve. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He used to take his classes on annual deep sea fishing excursions, and many students spent time hunting with Carleton in the back woods.

Upon retirement, Carleton spent his days outdoors where he most loved to be. He and his wife planted a forest of pine trees, an apple orchard, and he built many stonewalls on the farm. Carleton shared his love of stonewalls by building them throughout Central Maine as part of the family business.

An avid gardener, he had the most bountiful, weed free vegetable gardens every year, saving his own seeds and cultivating his own varieties. He was a gifted artist, builder, and inventor. He loved a good challenge and never passed up an opportunity to try something new. He was a machinist by trade, and among many things he created, he built his house, a boat house, and numerous ponds around his property. A man of many talents, he also had a beautiful singing voice and sang for the Boston boys’ choir, was a scuba diver, a Mason, got his private pilot’s license, was selected as Maine and the Northeast Regional Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year for 1996, and even tried his hand at wine making. From all these adventures came many stories, which his family will be sharing for many years to come.

Carleton is survived by his wife of 68 years Maetta (Patton) Jones; daughters Cindy Jones Spaulding, of Albion, Laura Jones, of Vassalboro; sons Craig and his wife Victoria (Bell) Jones, of Hollis, New Hampshire, and Steven Jones and his partner Robert Milano, of Vassalboro; five grandchildren and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Howard and Leith Jones and his son Jeffrey Jones.

Honoring Carleton’s wish, a small family gathering is planned in May at the stone pyramid he built on the family farm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be mailed to Maetta Jones, 53 Quaker Lane, Vassalboro, ME 04989. A fund in his memory has been created and will be used toward a donation of planted trees and other materials at a public park in Vassalboro.

Shortly thereafter, he began his career in education as a teacher in Presque Isle, during which time he met Janice, his wife of 68 years. Following their wedding in 1955, Richard joined the U.S. Army for two years of service. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to teaching in Presque Isle, eventually becoming principal at Skyway Middle School.

Richard enjoyed numerous pastimes in his younger days including sports, bird hunting, fishing, and playing cards with friends. In the last few years, he focused on crossword puzzles, Wordle, watching music videos, outings to the casino, family gatherings, and talking on his cell phone (especially to Earl). CELINA KNIPPLING

OAKLAND – Celina Knippling, 52, died peacefully, in Oakland, on Thursday, March 16, 2023. She bravely fought cancer for many years and died peacefully.

Yanked into the world by the forceps of an impatient doctor, Celina was born on the plains of South Dakota, November 1970, to Howard and Claire Knippling.

She was the definition of an exceptional child who was known to say, “I ‘mart, Mommy.” and could read Little House books before kindergarten.

Celina was known for her genius-level wit coupled with her unquenchable thirst for truth and justice, usually served with a sprinkling of her sardonic humor. She wanted to be a historian and was a voracious reader of all topics but settled on becoming an auditor in order to bring white collared criminals to justice and pay the bills.

She earned many accolades as a Senior Auditor, in Sacramento, California, including the State Auditor’s Excellence Award (much like Jamie Lee Curtis’s character in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once). In 2013 she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, eventually becoming the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) at Optimity Advisors. She relocated to Maine in March 2022 to be closer to family while receiving palliative care.

She loved her cats (Kit Kat, Snickers, Basheera, and Harriet), traveling (especially to Rome), visiting friends, fossil hunting for megalodon teeth (which she never found), pranking her nephews and niece, growing things, baking bread, listening to musical theater, coloring and painting her chotskies.

Celina also followed current events closely. Some people think social justice warrior is a scary concept, but Celina wore that badge proudly (her online Reddit presence will be felt and missed thoroughly). She loved fiercely and formed a small group of friends also known as her “chosen family” who were very dear to her. She was known as Celina “The Great”.

She was preceded by nieces Xea Clare and Juniper; father Howard; brother-in-law, John Meyer; and too many other relatives to list.

She leaves behind her mother, Claire (Lafontaine Knippling) Ryan; stepfather, Kelly Ryan; sisters Laurie (and brother-in-law Shane) Nelsen, Kitara Meyer, Jen (and brother-in-law Craig) Allen; brother, Mike Knippling; nephews Phoenix Sanchez, Eli, Luke and Noah Nelsen, Lex Knippling and niece, Vani Byerly.

A celebration of life will be held virtually and in Maine on July 2, 2023.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, please donate to her favorite charity, the Fistula Foundation.

LEE E. FITZGERALD

OAKLAND – Lee Edward Fitzgerald, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2023, at his home, located on Messalonskee Lake, in Oakland. He was born in Waterville on January 29, 1934, the only son of Harry and Mary (McCann) Fitzgerald.

Lee grew up in Winslow, graduating from Winslow High School in 1952, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He then went on to the University of Maine where he was honored to be selected his sophomore year into the University Owls Honors Society. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

In 1954, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and trained in the Armor Branch, completing his term as an instructor. In 1956, he returned to the University of Maine, graduating in 1959 with a B.A. degree in history and government.

Lee started his employment career with Travelers Insurance Co., in Hartford, Connecticut, trained in selling pension and group health plans for company employees. A change to State Mutual Insurance Co. took him to Providence, Thode Island, Chicago, illinois, Syracuse, New York, and onto Washington D.C.

Lee started his own company, Global Benefits, offering group health benefits to companies and associations. He started another company, Group Claims Administration (GTA), which insured and processed health insurance claims for foreign students enrolled in colleges in the United States. He sold his business and retired in 2005.

Lee had a passion for old history and the many antiques that he had collected over the years. He liked nothing more than attending an antique auction to bid on a treasure that he had researched to know its true value. Lee accumulated a diverse collection of antique furniture, pewter, paintings, and was especially proud of a large collection of antique guns with his special interest in shotguns.

Lee took advantage of his retirement, along with his longtime companion, Delia Thompson, to travel several times to Ireland, investigating places of interest and his family ancestry. He later flew to Rome, Italy, involving a three-week trip to Italy, Spain, Egypt, and many other points of interest on the Mediterranean Sea.

Lee is survived by his daughter, Laura Lee Fitzgerald, of San Luis Obispo, California; and longtime companion, Delia Thompson, of Oakland.

A family and friends graveside service will be held at a later date.

PEARL I. FULLER

ALBION – Pearl Irene (Rood) Fuller, 93, passed peacefully on, Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, in Waterville, just three weeks shy of her 94th birthday. She was born in Benton Falls, the fifth child of nine born to the late Robert H. and Elvira Goodale Rood.

She enjoyed being part of a large family and admired her mother for keeping the children in line – most of the time! She was proud of graduating eighth grade at the East Vassalboro Grammar School.

In 1943 the family moved to a home on the Benton Road, in Albion, and she entered Besse High School, in Albion, as a freshman. There she met Carleton “Dutchie” Fuller, who was into everything sports related. She was a cheerleader at many of his games. During summers she worked at Willow Beach Camps, in China, along with several of her sisters and friends. She graduated in 1947 and entered a two-year secretarial science program at Thomas Business College,, in Waterville. Upon graduation in 1949 she started working for the Waterville Morning Sentinel.

Pearl and Carleton were married April 25, 1950, on the 25th wedding anniversary of his parents, in a candlelight ceremony at the Albion Christian Church. They lived in Waterville for a short time before moving back to Albion to start a family and buy a home. Their first child, Stephen Carleton, was born in 1952; David Mahlon in 1956, and Bettie Jane in 1959.

After leaving the newspaper, Pearl worked for several superintendents of Albion schools, and when Albion consolidated with area towns, she worked for the superintendent of SAD #49 (Albion, Benton, Clinton, Fairfield). She took a short break from working and then became a teacher’s aide at the Albion Elementary School where she enjoyed guiding and caring for the students she supervised.

When Grandfather Fuller passed away in 1970, the family moved to the farm where Pearl did all the bookkeeping for the business of the farm, worked in the broiler house, tended a large vegetable garden, and helped out in other areas when needed. She was a very active woman! She was also known for her cooking and baking skills, especially her yeast rolls and sweet treats.

Pearl made many life-time friends in Albion and was involved in a variety of community organizations, both as a member and officer, including PTA, Rebekahs, Fireman’s Auxillary, Extension, Fairfax Club, Grange, and Red Hatters. For many years she belonged to a bowling league and was a fierce competitor! Playing cards, cribbage, Uno, Yahtzee, and other games with friends and family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brought her much joy.

During retirement, she and Carleton went on bus tours and cruises with friends and family and spent many a Saturday night “cutting the rug” at dances. After Carleton passed away, she traveled to Italy with her sister and husband, Hattie and Roddy, and spent multiple winters with Aunt Hattie in Florida, Arizona, and California.

Pearl was a woman of faith and for many years went to the Albion Christian Church. In later years, she enjoyed visiting China Baptist Church and Getchell Street Baptist church, in Waterville, with Aunt Hattie and their cousin, Sharon Norton. The last church she attended was the Winslow Baptist Church where she was baptized (for the second time) and became a member.

In 1989, Pearl and Carleton donated land to Albion for the creation of ball fields for the town’s youth. Fuller Fields is their legacy and a demonstration of their love and hope for their hometown.

After living in Winslow for several years, in 2019 Pearl entered assisted living at Redington Memorial Home, in Skowhegan. In 2020 she moved to the Cedar Ridge Center, in Skowhegan, and in 2021 she moved to Lakewood, in Waterville.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her sisters Hilda Pease (Emery), Bernice Bagley (Ronald), and Hattie Robinson (Roderick); her brothers Harold (Jennie), Herman (Hazel), Ernest (Rosalie), Arthur (Laura); her brother-in-law, Ben Bolin; and her son-in-law, Brent Varney.

She is survived by her children Stephen (Bradley Jordan), of Wells, David and wife Debra, of Albion, Bettie (Randy Hartt), of Vassalboro; her grandchildren April Paul and her husband Kenneth, of Clinton, Christopher Fuller, of Winslow, and Nuria Ramos, of Eliot; her great-grandchildren Cassandra Paul and Draiden Mason; her sister Ellen Bolin of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 20, at 1 p.m., in the Number 4 Cemetery, in Albion.

Arrangements are in the care of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, where memories may be shared, and an online register book signed by visiting http://www.lawrybrothers.com.

She found a love of Christianity in their warm, supportive home. She would go on to become valedictorian of her graduating class at Cassopolis High School in 1971.

LOUISE M. BELLOWS

WINSLOW – Louise May (Shores) Bellows, 90, of Winslow, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, March 6, 2023. Louise was born on August 23, 1932, in Fairfield, the eldest child to Erlon and Gladys (Brawn) Shores.

The family soon relocated to Albion where Louise attended the Bessey School until the end of her eighth grade year. Louise attended high school in Winslow, where she met her soulmate, Cecil Bellows, and became a graduating member of the class of 1951.

Louise married Cecil, in Benton Falls, on June 28, 1952. The couple welcomed their first son in 1953 and their second son in 1959.

Louise raised her sons and some of her siblings, all while helping Cecil run Bellows Texaco, in Winslow. They later managed the school busing for Winslow and Vassalboro. Louise continued her duties alongside her husband Cecil, until his untimely passing on October 19, 1988, and then with her son, for over 55 years.

Louise’s first priority in life was to ensure her family was taken care of, but beyond that, she thrived in taking care of everyone she came across.

Throughout her time on this Earth, Louise enjoyed many activities with her friends and family such as camping on Moosehead Lake and watching both her sons participate in stock car racing. Louise welcomed seven grandchildren and enjoyed all their activities, some of which were also stock car racing and horse racing.

Louise also enjoyed shopping with the grandchildren, lawn “saleing” and dinner at the China Dinah, in South China. Louise was also able to welcome 11 of her 14 great-grandchildren. Every year Louise insisted on hosting all the holiday dinners for the entire family at her home and she made it a point to visit her brothers on “the farm” multiple times a week, bringing them “snacks”. Truth be told that was just an excuse to check in on them. Louise was a firm believer in showing her love by feeding everyone.

When Route 201 was a major trucking route she would often feed some of the drivers who made recurring fuel stops on their way through and would often board and feed other stock car drivers and their family or crew if she deemed their return home at night to be too long.

Louise had a heart of gold and loved to share it with the world around her. She will be loved forever and missed immensely.

Louise was predeceased by her parents Erlon and Gladys Shores, her stepmom, Beverly Shores; her husband, Cecil Bellows; brother, Herbert and his wife Nelly Shores, brothers Fred, Donald, Manly and Dale Shores.

Louise is survived by her her sons Edward Bellows and wife Marie, Robert Bellows and wife Marie; her grandchildren Brad Bellows and partner Jane, Casey Bellows, Kristie Bellows and husband Jim Wagg, Bryan Bellows and partner Stephanie, Roberta Bellows and partner Kayden, Bobby Bellows and partner Tayla, Nicole Genest and husband Todd; step-granddaughters Montana and Donna Roy; 14 great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Parker, Kylie, Olivia, Dinah, Judith, Carson, Jacob, Bryden, Caleb, baby girl Genest, Scarlett, Bryce and Freya; sister-in-law, Lois Shores; sister, Gloria and husband Ronald Gregory; brothers Amasa Shores and partner Darlene, and Allen and Danny Shores; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at a date still to be determined.

Arrangements are in the care of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield where memories may be shared, and an online register book signed by visiting http://www.lawrybrothers.com.

She attended school in Vassalboro and then on to Winslow High School. After high school, she started working as a CNA at Volmer’s Nursing Home, in Vassalboro, and then on to the Waterville Convalescent Center, (now Oak Grove Center). On November 25, 1972, she married Gerald Poulin, of Sidney, had two children together, and just last year, celebrated 50 years of marriage.

After having her own children, she opened her home to several children throughout the years, including her nieces and nephews. After her children were grown, she started working outside of her home at Home Resources of Maine and providing personal care to several clients in the community and made several lasting relationships with many of her clients.

Her care and compassion to elderly members in the Sidney area has made a lasting effect on the families of those individuals and brought those families comfort knowing she was giving such wonderful care to their family member. She made several lifelong friendships through the years. Many of her family, especially her cousins, called her Goodie or Goodsta, and whatever other name one felt fit her. Helen saved her favorite job for last and that was caring for her grandchildren in her home.

Helen was the leader of the local T.O.P.S. group for several years, served as an Avon representative, and a Fashion Two-Twenty representative selling makeup and various accessories. Of course, Helen always had one requirement and that was that you would have to deal with her humor, wit and sarcasm.

Helen also enjoyed the CB radio, going by the name of “Cabbage Patch”, aka “Patches”, and the adventures that went along with that. She enjoyed spending time with her husband Gerry and taking rides to the coast, attending several country music shows that her brother-in-law Norm hosted with Norm Poulin Productions, and loved attending her grandchildren’s activities. She was especially proud to attend the scouting events to celebrate the accomplishments of her son Ryan, and as well as attending many years of dance recitals for her daughter Kim, and granddaughter Layla’s as well.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Manley and Nellie Goodale, her brother Ronald Goodale, and her sister Barbara Goodale.

Survivors include her husband Gerald Poulin, of Sidney; son Ryan Poulin and his wife Charity, of Sidney; her daughter Kimberly Murgo and her husband Lorenzo, of Benton; her youngest sister Heidi Goodale and her fiancé Wendall Brann, of Farmingdale; her grandson Dawson Poulin, of Sidney; granddaughters Addison Poulin, of Sidney, and Layla Murgo, of Benton; her aunt, Edna Greenlaw, of Winslow; and brother-in-law Norman Poulin, of Sidney; as well as many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 11 a.m., at the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, 614 Main Street, Vassalboro, with a celebration of life and luncheon following at noon at The Mill, 934 Main Street, in Vassalboro.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, March 16, 2023

WILLIAM R. COTTER

CONCORD, Massachusetts – William “Bill” Reckling Cotter, 87, died peacefully at his Concord home on his 87th birthday, Thursday, March 9, 2023. Bill was born on March 9, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Fred J. and Esther (Reckling) Cotter, and lived with his older brother, Fred C., near a large extended family.

Bill and his family moved to Tarrytown, New York, when he was in sixth grade and he graduated from Washington Irving High School there.

He went on to Harvard College, where he was president of the Harvard Democratic Club. In 1956, while serving in that role, he recruited student volunteers at the request of the chairman of Massachusetts Students for (Adlai) Stevenson, Linda Kester, a student at Wellesley College. As Bill was fond of saying, Linda was his boss. They became friends and later, began dating. In 1958, Bill graduated with high honors from Harvard College and went on to Harvard Law School.

Linda and Bill were married in 1959 at the Kester family home in New York and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Linda earned her master’s degree in teaching at the Harvard School of Education while Bill finished at Harvard Law School, graduating with honors in 1961. Bill and Linda enjoyed 61 years of true partnership, deep friendship, and love until Linda’s death, two years ago.

Bill had an extremely interesting professional life, including as clerk to a federal judge, as an assistant attorney general in Kaduna, Nigeria, as the Ford Foundation representative in Bogotá, Colombia, as a White House Fellow, as president of the African-American Institute in New York City, New York, and as president of the Oak Foundation, in Boston, Massachusetts.

However, the professional role he treasured most was as the longest-serving president of Colby College, in Waterville, from 1979-2000.

In addition to his role as lead administrator and fundraiser, he also taught a course called “Law and Social Change,” and became a dedicated and skilled teacher. He carried this deep love of teaching through the rest of his life. An unusual college president without a Ph.D., during his time as president, he was pleased to receive five honorary degrees. He was especially proud of his work at Colby to strengthen its national academic reputation, build its endowment, and make it a more inclusive community.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Bill was an active volunteer, including serving as treasurer of the Phillips Brooks House at Harvard, chairman of the Oyster Bay (New York) Library Board, chairman of the Board of Maine Public Broadcasting, treasurer of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and as a life trustee at Colby College.

Bill was an accomplished and respected leader in his professional career, but also was a truly beloved father and grandfather. He always made time for his family, despite his busy professional career. He prioritized coming home for dinner and loved to take the family to North Street Dairy Cone for homemade mocha chip afterwards.

Bill lived for his last three years undergoing treatment for metastatic prostate cancer, a fact that that was not evident to most people until last summer, when treatments lost their efficacy and his strength and vigor began to decline. Bill exercised daily and until May of last year, walked five miles per day. While his physical strength was greatly diminished, his mental capacity and speaking ability were not. Bill taught his final Supreme Court class over Zoom on February 14, just three weeks before his death.

In his final days of life, Bill spent time with his children, grandchildren, and close friends at Newbury Court, a true community for him.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Deborah; and his brother, Fred.

He leaves behind his son David, of San Diego, California; his daughter, Elizabeth and husband Michael Schlax, of Yarmouth; and his granddaughters Elena and Jillian Schlax; his sisters-in-law, Marjorie Smith, of Durham, New Hampshire, and Gai Cotter, of Novi, Michigan, and their families; as well as countless other relatives.

Bill will be laid to rest next to his wife and daughter in Concord, Massachusetts. A memorial gathering will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bill’s memory to Colby College or a charity of your choice

As a child she had traveled with her parents and had seen many places before they settled in Maine. She greatly enjoyed trips with her children in the past few years to Mexico and Bahamas. BENJAMIN B. TWITCHELL III

WINSLOW – Benjamin Bird Twitchell III, 77, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023, following a long and valiant battle with prostate cancer. Born in Portland in 1945, to Capt. Benjamin B. Twitchell II and Gloria (Wing) Twitchell, Ben grew up in South Paris.

He met his future bride and love of his life, Linda Aldrich, when he was just 15 years old. After graduating from Oxford Hills High School in 1963, Ben enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for four years. He and Linda were married in August 1965 and were never far away from one another for the 57 years of their marriage.

After the Air Force, Ben moved back to Maine and started a career working for New England Telephone. He worked his way up into management, continuing through various iterations of the phone company, and retired early after 26 years of service from NYNEX in 1995.

Always restless and looking for something to do, Ben became a school bus driver upon his retirement, and served that role for 22 years for the Vassalboro School Department. He loved “driving bus” and the connections he made with students and families, and also represented bus drivers in union contract negotiations.

Always civically and community minded, Ben was involved in many organizations throughout his life. He participated in DeMolay, the Masons, the Lions Club, bowling leagues, Little League coaching, and as a Boy Scouts of America leader in four different troops across the state.

During his bus driving years he became interested in politics and ran for Winslow Town Council, where he served nine years. After his retirement from the telephone company he also became a bit of a handyman, doing odd jobs for folks in the community. Ben always loved a project, whether he was the one doing it or overseeing the work being done.

Ben will be remembered by his generous heart, his championing of the underdog, pride in his country, but mostly his fierce love and protection for those he loved, especially his family. He loved to tell stories, such as his adventures as a teenager and the cars he drove. Ben loved to laugh, be the center of attention, and chat up anyone willing to talk.

He loved the outdoors, hunting with his sons, traveling south during winter months, buying and selling boats and cars and all sorts of other motorized equipment, going out to eat, watching the Hallmark Channel, whistling no tune in particular – especially when he was doing a project, and lending a hand to anyone in need in any way they needed it.

Ben is survived by his wife, Linda Aldrich Twitchell; sons, Ben Twitchell IV and his wife Laura, of Bar Harbor, Scott Twichell and his wife Heidi, of Benton; daughter, Tiffany Twitchell and her husband David, of Kennebunk; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; aunt, Fern Twitchell, of Naples; brother, Terry Twitchell, of Oxford; and sisters Carol Williams and April L’Heureux, of Norway; siblings-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was a devoted husband to his wife Jan Hachey, a dad to his children, Michael and Lauren Hachey, and a Grampy to his little princess Ellie Hachey. Tom’s smile would light up a room and everyone knew he always had a good story to tell.

Early on, he started his long stretch of employment after graduating from Waterville High School in 1976, just making enough beer money to make it back and forth to hockey games with the boys. This eventually led him to working for the Waterville Police Department where he met his partner in “crime”, Steve Thompson. Tom and Steve worked together for a total of 42 years until Tom retired three years ago.

Aside from work, Tom was an avid outdoorsman that loved to hunt, fish, and hang out at camp. A group of close friends got together to build a beautiful camp in Northeast Carry right on Moosehead Lake. Making memories with friends and family, there was no place Tom would rather go (besides Pennsylviania/Alaska). From moose hunts, deer hunts, bird hunts, fishing trips, ice fishing, you name it, camp was the place to be.

Tom loved watching and playing sports his entire life. From cheering on his New England teams to coaching all of Michael and Lauren’s youth teams, Tom never missed a game or an opportunity to yell from the stands.

GARY A. McCARTY II

WEEKS MILLS – Gary Alden McCarty II, 39, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023, following years of dealing with pancreatitis and multiple stomach health issues.

He attended Windsor School and graduated from Cony High School, in Augusta, in 2001. Through the years he worked for Pine State Trading Company and the Town of China Transfer Station.

Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to spending time with his dad and Josh going on fishing trips and rides on their Harleys. But what he loved most was when his mom said yes to him getting his Mustang, in his junior year of high school. He loved that car! And one thing is for sure, he especially enjoyed family traditions and celebrating each holiday with everyone.

Gary always depended on his big sister for her guidance and was so thankful for Tanya. He also considered her husband, Josh, his brother, and enjoyed the time they shared and Gary knew that he could always count on them both no matter what.

Gary was proud to be an uncle and he loved to spend time with his nephew, Joshua, whether it was to talk about his Ford truck or to go fishing and hunting. Gary loved the fact that he was the one to bring Joshua hunting when he got his very first deer and another one the following year! He also enjoyed going to Cony to cheer Joshua on at his varsity lacrosse games.

Gary enjoyed hanging out with his niece, Leah and hearing all about her gymnastics meets and watching the videos of her routines when she completed a competition. And he was the one that fueled her love for snowboarding because she just mentioned it and he bought her what she wanted and her lift ticket. He grinned from ear to ear when he saw her “shred” down the mountain.

And he loved his furbabies and spoiled them. Buckwheat, Princess and Gus. Gus will miss “the good life” on our next trip without having him.

Gary was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Jeannette McCarty; maternal grandparents, Lloyd “Bucky” and Evelyn French.

He is survived by his parents Gary and Lisa (French) McCarty; his sister, Tanya McCarty-Barrett and husband Josh; his nephew, Joshua Barrett II; his niece, Leah Barrett; his paternal grandfather, Alden McCarty; his aunt, Theresa Grotton and husband Tim; his aunt, Rita Gower and husband David; his uncle, Lloyd French Jr. and wife Lori; his aunt, Betty Baker and husband Jim; his uncle, Richard French; his aunt, Lori Leclerc and husband Bruno; his uncle, Doug McCarty; his cousins, Penny Grotton, Peggy (Jason) Barrett, Tara (Jay) Steeves, Bub (Amy) Gower, Lloyd (Jennifer) French, Amanda French, Lisa Baker, AJ Baker, Jennifer (Matt) Dissell; and many other extended family members and friends.

His family lived on the property of Ellis D. Atwood, which had many acres of cranberry bogs in Carver, Massachusetts, and Butch’s father was the foreman of that business. During harvest the cranberries were brought in from the bogs on a narrow-gauge railroad, which Mr. Atwood had relocated from Sandy River. This later became known as The Edaville Railroad. Butch always said he was lucky to grow up there because there was a lot of interesting activity, and in the winter they played hockey on the frozen bogs.

His father and brother were baseball enthusiasts and at a young age Butch was bat boy for the town team and later organized a team for the local boys. He graduated from Plymouth High School where he excelled at basketball and baseball.

In 1950 he met Virginia Nichols at a church camp, in Marion, Massachusetts. Six years later they were married and moved to Aurora, Illinois, where he attended Aurora College (now Aurora University) and was referred to by many as an “eternal optimist.” He played basketball and baseball, and after his graduation he became the baseball coach and assumed other responsibilities in the physical education department.

He graduated with bachelor of arts and bachelor of theology degrees. He then went to seminary in Naperville, Illinois, graduating with a bachelor of divinity degree. In 1964 they moved to Augusta where he served as pastor of a church, and children, Peter and Pam, were joyfully added to the family.

In 1967 they moved to Waterville to serve part time in the Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church and to begin his 25-year career as science teacher at the Waterville Junior High School. He received his master’s degree in science education at Farmington College (now UMF).

As a teacher he is often remembered for his pet iguana, his many trips with the ski club he founded, his winter safety course, and the interesting things he kept in formaldehyde in the closet.

He initiated the building of the Merritt Nature Trail, and many students walked the trail, learning a variety of things as they went along. One year he discovered the bones of a dead moose in the Belgrade woods. With many trips he brought it to the school, and had the students put the moose skeleton together. For years the skeleton served in the classroom as a working illustration of anatomy. He was ordained as a United Methodist elder, and upon his retirement from teaching, he served as pastor in several churches in the area. He was active in the community with the Waterville Rotary Club, the United Way, the Oakland Food Pantry, and as president of the board of the Sunset Home.

He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and followed the New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics and Bruins. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, hiking, hunting, fishing, and playing bridge. Butch cherished the times he hunted with his grandsons and was very proud the day he and Drew came home with Drew’s first deer. BETTY LOU MARSHALL

OAKLAND – Betty Lou (Gore) Marshall, 100, beloved matriarch, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, of natural causes. Betty was born on September 30, 1922, in Hooker, Oklahoma, to Milton and Alma Gore, and she was one of five children.

She attended schools in Flint Creek, Oklahoma, before joining the U.S.Navy two years after graduating high school.

Betty was one of the first women to join the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), which was the women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. She was stationed in New York City, Santa Monica, and San Diego California, and through her service she met her soon-to-be husband, David, a Navy pilot. At the end of World War II, they returned to David’s hometown of Waterville to begin their civilian life.

As their three children went on to college, Betty did as well, earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine. With her degree, she began teaching language arts in Oakland, at Williams Junior High School, followed by Williams Senior High School (now Messalonskee), for 10 years before retiring.

She became a realtor at ERA McCann, in Waterville; she traveled extensively in Europe, the British Isles, and across the U.S.; she volunteered at the Oakland Public Library; and with her son, Jimmy, she designed a custom home that allowed her to age in place to nearly the end of her life. JOHN N. FOSS

PALERMO – John Nathanael Foss, 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. He was born on October 8, 1936, in Lewiston, to John S. and Lois B. (Guptill) Foss, John attended schools in Lewiston before his family moved to Pittsfield where he graduated from Maine Central Institute. He went on to study at the New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1959. After graduation, John joined the U.S. Navy where he taught at the Navy School of Music and toured with the Navy Band as a trumpet soloist. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he sang in a chorus under the direction of Igor Stravinsky.  This was one of the most fulfilling musical experiences of his life.

At the end of his two-year enlistment in 1961, John made his way to where the action was for a polished young jazz trumpeter – Las Vegas! It was there that John honed his art over 15 years, playing in house bands backing up Della Reese, Wayne Newton, Peggy Lee, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severenson, and Frank Sinatra Jr., among many others. John was having dinner with Frank Jr. in his room at Lake Tahoe’s, Harrah’s Club, when two men, posing as room service, kidnapped Frank Jr. and tied up and blindfolded John, leaving him on the floor.

Living in the hills of Mt. Charleston, northwest of Vegas, John continued to play seven nights a week and made connections that led to the opportunity of a lifetime. In the mid-’70s, John was selected to join the brass section of the Beach Boys for a world tour. John’s connections to the members of the band lasted well after the tour ended.

Looking to slow down, John moved to Los Angeles and worked as a landscaper but by the early ‘80s the pull of Maine lured him back home, settling in Augusta and taking a job at Erskine Academy, in South China.  He tirelessly built the music program from scratch at Erskine and taught generations of musicians for the next several decades. He encouraged students to compose as well as conduct and was always available to assist students with music before and after school. John was the first recipient of the District III Music Educator of the Year Award. That was only his day job. He took on scores of private students, so many of which went on to impact the music scene, not only in Maine but around the world.  There is barely a trumpet player under the age of 60 in Maine who isn’t familiar with John’s work.  As if that wasn’t enough, John’s virtuosity on trumpet made him a sought-after commodity from the Port City Allstars to the Al Corey Big Band, the Phil Rich Big Band, the Manchester Brass, the Tony Boffa Band, the Portland Jazz Orchestra and so many more. John’s playing, however, was not all big band gigs. He could be found in small trios, quartets, and in the orchestra pit doing music theater. When big names like Martha and the Vandellas and Natalie Cole came to Maine, John got the call.

John’s involvement in the Maine music scene exposed a need to bring jazz education to the younger generation. In the early ‘80s John called on a number of those Vegas contacts to come to Maine to work at the Maine Jazz Camp at the old Oak Grove Coburn School, in Vassalboro, exposing hundreds of young musicians to world renowned expertise for many summers.

Retired in 2003 from Erskine, John resumed his landscaping passion on his farm, in Palermo, that he and his wife Emily spent the last 30 years building into a home.

He is survived by his wife Emily; his children Jeffery Jones and his wife Angelique Breton, of Casco, Andrea Girimonte and her husband Al, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Erika Reay and her husband Brian, of China; his brother-in-law Frank Rende, of Augusta; nephews Nate Rende and his wife Suzanne, of Boothbay, Sam Rende and his wife Miki, of Wichita, Kansas, Nik Rende and his wife Kathy, of Augusta; and many grandchildren, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

John may have been small of stature but with a trumpet in his hands he was a giant.

John is predeceased by his parents and his sister Priscilla Rend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Erskine Academy gymnasium, 309 Windsor Road, So. China, Maine, on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Visitation will be from noon – 1 p.m., with a service directly following from 1 – 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
