THOMAS C. HACHEY

OAKLAND – Thomas C. Hachey, 65, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023, following a hard fight with cancer. Tom was born on December 12, 1957, in Waterville, the son of Lois Hachey and Edward F. Hachey.

He was a devoted husband to his wife Jan Hachey, a dad to his children, Michael and Lauren Hachey, and a Grampy to his little princess Ellie Hachey. Tom’s smile would light up a room and everyone knew he always had a good story to tell.

Early on, he started his long stretch of employment after graduating from Waterville High School in 1976, just making enough beer money to make it back and forth to hockey games with the boys. This eventually led him to working for the Waterville Police Department where he met his partner in “crime”, Steve Thompson. A few years went by and they decided to purchase Arbo’s Towing and Repair, in Waterville, along with other investments down the road. Tom and Steve worked together for a total of 42 years until Tom retired three years ago.

Aside from work, Tom was an avid outdoorsman that loved to hunt, fish, and hang out at camp. A group of close friends got together to build a beautiful camp in Northeast Carry right on Moosehead Lake. Making memories with friends and family, there was no place Tom would rather go (besides Pennsylviania/Alaska). From moose hunts, deer hunts, bird hunts, fishing trips, ice fishing, you name it, camp was the place to be.

Tom loved watching and playing sports his entire life. From cheering on his New England teams to coaching all of Michael and Lauren’s youth teams, Tom never missed a game or an opportunity to yell from the stands.

Tom is also survived by his sister Virginia Joseph, brother Michael and wife Mary Hachey; is nephews Gregory Joseph, Steven and wife Sherri Hachey, as well as their two children Dylan and Cameron Hachey.

Services will be held at Notre Dame Church, 116 Silver Street, in Waterville, at 10 a.m., on Thursday, March 2. A reception is to follow immediately after the service at the Elks Lodge banquet room, in Waterville.

PAUL E. DUBOIS

OAKLAND – Paul E. Dubois, 62, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023, in Murrells Inlet, South Caro­lina. He was born August 30, 1960, in Waterville, son of Robert E and Sharon Reynolds Dubois. Paul passed away peacefully while on vacation in South Carolina.

He attended Sidney and Oakland schools, graduating from Messalonskee High School, in Oakland, in 1978. He joined the Army National Guard after high school, stationed in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was a metal worker and wheeled vehicle mechanic.

Paul was also a professional welder. Other jobs included Cascade Woolen Mill, in Oakland, BABAC, in Winslow, TCR, Sappi, in Hinckley, and apartment management to name a few.

Lobstering as a recreation became a labor of love. He and partner Debbie became the local lobster dealers. They spent countless hours cooking and distributing to local clients.

Paul loved camping, hunting, fishing, woodworking and many mechanical endeavors.

One of his last great accomplishments was turning his Harley Davidson motorcycle into a trike. He was very proud of it.

Paul was a member Oakland American Legion Post #51, where he was currently the finance officer. He was instrumental in the success and getting the financial situation into a great place. He loved to do the chicken BBQs and make dough boys. Paul was also a member of the American Legion Riders which he was very involved and also help to start the Post #51 Chapter where he also served as the treasurer.

He was also very active in the Oakland Lions Club where he and Debbie could be found in the trailer cooking up meals at the Gazebo and other locations for the Lions Club. Paul was also a member of the Waterville Forrest J. Pare VFW Post #1285 Auxiliary, and the Waterville Elks Lodge #905.

Survivors include sister Peggy Kinsey, of Belgrade; nece Holly, husband Charlie Plourde; and great-niece Amani Plourde, of Vassalboro. Far too many extended family and friends to name.

Paul was predeceased by parents Robert and Sharon DuBois; his partner Debbie Williams, for whom his life was forever changed after her sudden passing

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 3 p.m., at the American Legion, in Oakland, where there will be a military service followed by the Waterville Elks Lodge ceremony.

SISTER JOYCE KEEVAN

WATERVILLE – Sister Joyce, formerly known as Sr. Ann Patrick, 86, died on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Mount Joseph, Waterville, following a long journey with dementia. She was in her 66th year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Lyon.

Joyce was born on May 16, 1936, in South Berwick, daughter of Leroy and Mary (Lawless) Keevan and one of four siblings with Leroy, Thomas, and Ann. Ann also became a Sister of St. Joseph. Joyce attended St. Michael School and the Academy of St. Joseph, graduating in 1953. She earned a B.S. in Natural Sciences from St. Joseph College, Standish, and continued her education through programs of the National Science Foundation at Western Maryland College, Maryland, and Emory College, Georgia. She also pursued pastoral studies at Loyola University.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon in 1954 and made her First Vows on August 15, 1956. Over the years Joyce served in various leadership positions of the community: the Provincial Council; the Advisory Board of St. Joseph’s Child Care Center, and on the Sisters’ Board of Directors.

Sr. Joyce was a teacher at heart and succeeded in making science come alive for her students at St. Rose of Lima School, Jay; St. Michael School and the Academy of St. Joseph, South Berwick; St. John the Baptist School, Winslow; and Marshwood High School, Eliot, where she spent the last 25 years of her teaching career.

Sr. Joyce loved nature and the outdoors, the various pets that became part of her life, and the Boston Red Sox. In her retirement she had her dog trained as a therapy pet and would visit local nursing homes bringing joy to residents and staff alike. She celebrated her Irish ancestry year-round.

She was predeceased by her parents and siblings and is survived by the Sisters of St. Joseph, with whom she shared life and ministry, several faithful and loving friends, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 24, 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, 116 Silver St., Waterville. Visitation will be at Notre Dame one hour prior to the Mass. A reception will follow at the Notre Dame Parish Hall. She will be buried at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Waterville.

EVERETT B. FLANNERY JR.

SKOWHEGAN – Everett B. Flannery, Jr., 64, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at his home, in Skowhegan. Everett was born in Waterville in 1958 to the late Everett (Sr.) and Gloria (Pease) Flannery.

He grew up in Winslow, and graduated Winslow High School in 1976, where he was a star athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Soon after graduation he pursued his passion of law enforcement and graduated from the 40th Municipal and County Basic Police School in 1981.

After graduation, Everett began his law enforcement career at the Madison Police Department, but six months later moved on to the Waterville Police Department. His first assignment was a patrol officer, including a walking beat in Waterville’s South End. As a patrol officer, he began to develop meaningful relationships with the citizenry including exercising one of his most attributable assets: trust. He promoted to juvenile detective, where he investigated juvenile crimes and crimes against children. He took the role seriously and always sought justice through suspect confessions to avoid having the child testify in court. His career in Waterville lasted 12 years, including a five-month stint as acting chief in 1990.

In 1992, he was hired onto the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office as the Chief Deputy, under Sheriff Frank Hackett. He served as sheriff from October 2001 through January 2007. Everett continued to work for the Sheriff’s Office as Chief Deputy under various sheriffs who retained him for his expertise in law enforcement, policy and personnel.

During his career at the Sheriff’s Office he pursued two bachelor’s degrees; one in public administration and the other in information technology, both from the University of Maine at Augusta. He began his educational career at UMA in 1978, earning an associate degree in criminal justice.

In 2013, Everett retired from the Sheriff’s Office to spend more time with his wife Jayne and his granddaughters, Madilyn and Evelyn. In retirement he continued to consult for various law enforcement agencies across the state as well as work for JPMA Staff Development Solutions and then Lexipol’s Police One Academy. Along with law enforcement, he had a passion for information technology and was particularly computer savvy.

Throughout his life he intensely loved his family. He coached little league baseball and learned the game of hockey to coach and referee that as well to spend those special times with his sons. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and four-wheeling with his family. Outdoor activities were a special time to teach and connect with his children. Everett and Jayne enjoyed many four-wheeling trips in northern Maine. Everett was an animal lover and had numerous cats and dogs throughout the years that he adored.

Everett is survived by his wife Jayne, who over the years cared for him as his health declined. He is survived by sons Everett (III) and wife Kate, Ian and wife Hannah; stepson Darrick Pratt and step-daughter Beth Huston and husband Don; sisters Brenda Patkus, Theresa Weston and husband Dana; granddaughters Madilyn and Evelyn.

A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, Februry 7, 2023, at the Federated Church, Island Avenue, in Skowhegan.

BETTY LOU MARSHALL

OAKLAND – Betty Lou (Gore) Marshall, 100, beloved matriarch, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, of natural causes. Betty was born on September 30, 1922, in Hooker, Oklahoma, to Milton and Alma Gore, and she was one of five children.

She attended schools in Flint Creek, Oklahoma, before joining the U.S.Navy two years after graduating high school.

Betty was one of the first women to join the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), which was the women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. She was stationed in New York City, Santa Monica, and San Diego California, and through her service she met her soon-to-be husband, David, a Navy pilot. At the end of World War II, they returned to David’s hometown of Waterville to begin their civilian life.

As their three children went on to college, Betty did as well, earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine. With her degree, she began teaching language arts in Oakland, at Williams Junior High School, followed by Williams Senior High School (now Messalonskee), for 10 years before retiring.

Even after experiencing personal tragedy, she continued to live her life to its fullest, always having great fun along the way and never mincing words. She became a realtor at ERA McCann, in Waterville; she traveled extensively in Europe, the British Isles, and across the U.S.; she volunteered at the Oakland Public Library; and with her son, Jimmy, she designed a custom home that allowed her to age in place to nearly the end of her life. She was a rock star, and may we all be lucky to have as fulfilling a life as she had.

Betty was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Alma Rae, Christine, Milton, and Natalie; husband, David; son, James D. Marshall, and sons-in law, Charles Folsom and Richard Pratt.

She is survived by daughters, Susan Folsom, of Fairfield, and Elizabeth Pratt, of Embden; daughter-in-law, Judy Marshall, of Waterville; four grandchildren, Eliza Folsom, of Waterville, R. James (Joelle) Pratt, of Jay, Alicia (Howie) Deardorff, of North Billerica, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Marshall (Chris Glenn), of Los Angeles, California; and two great-grandchildren, Caitrin Pratt and Rosalie Deardorff.

A private reception and burial will be held at a later date.

WAYNE H. GIROUX

CLINTON – Wayne H. Giroux, 84, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the VA Hospital, in Togus. He was born April 28, 1938, and grew up in Western Massachusetts.

Wayne resided in the central Maine area for the past 30 years. For most of his life, he worked as a boilermaker.

He leaves behind his three daughters, and two grandchildren.

JACQUELINE BOULET

WATERVILLE – Jacqueline “Jackie” Boulet, 85, formerly of Winslow, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Sunday, January 22, 2023. She was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada, to Antonio and Helen (Dubois) Rancourt, on October 12, 1937.

After graduating from high school, she entered teacher’s college and became an elementary school teacher and taught school until her move to Waterville and her marriage to Norman Boulet. She owned and operated Boulette’s Market, on Water Street, in Waterville, for a number of years until her family moved to Winslow.

After caring for her mother for several years and raising her three sons she obtained her real estate license and was a realtor in the Waterville area for over 30 years where she made many lifelong friends. She was a master seamstress and could make her own patterns and was an accomplished quilter. Many of her family and friends were blessed with her gifts of quilts, table runners and placemats.

Her greatest joy were her three sons whom she was immensely proud of and loved spending time with. She was a very giving and generous person, often helping out the less fortunate. In her giving and generous spirit, the family donated her lift recliner chair to Sunset Home, of Waterville, in order to make life easier for the residents there. She was a member and past president of the Waterville Exchangettes and a member of Caring friends which raised funds for a number of worthy causes.

Jackie was predeceased by her parents and her brother Gerald.

She is survived by her son Brian and wife Sandra, of Winslow, Gary and wife Faith, of Salem, New Hampshire, and Paul and fiancée Susan, of Canaan; two step -randchildren Raymond and Mari, of Salem, New Hampshire; her sister Jeannine Trepanier, of Winslow; and several nieces and nephews.

As per her wishes a celebration of life and graveside service will be held in early summer with burial at St Francis Catholic Cemetery, in Waterville.

JOHN N. FOSS

PALERMO – John Nathanael Foss, 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. He was born on October 8, 1936, in Lew­iston, to John S. and Lois B. (Gup­till) Foss, John attended schools in Lewiston before his family moved to Pittsfield where he graduated from Maine Central Institute. He went on to study at the New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1959. After graduation, John joined the U.S. Navy where he taught at the Navy School of Music and toured with the Navy Band as a trumpet soloist. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he sang in a chorus under the direction of Igor Stravinsky.  This was one of the most fulfilling musical experiences of his life.

At the end of his two-year enlistment in 1961, John made his way to where the action was for a polished young jazz trumpeter – Las Vegas! It was there that John honed his art over 15 years, playing in house bands backing up Della Reese, Wayne Newton, Peggy Lee, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severenson, and Frank Sinatra Jr., among many others. John was having dinner with Frank Jr. in his room at Lake Tahoe’s, Harrah’s Club, when two men, posing as room service, kidnapped Frank Jr. and tied up and blindfolded John, leaving him on the floor.

Living in the hills of Mt. Charleston, northwest of Vegas, John continued to play seven nights a week and made connections that led to the opportunity of a lifetime. In the mid-’70s, John was selected to join the brass section of the Beach Boys for a world tour. John’s connections to the members of the band lasted well after the tour ended.

Looking to slow down, John moved to Los Angeles and worked as a landscaper but by the early ‘80s the pull of Maine lured him back home, settling in Augusta and taking a job at Erskine Academy, in South China.  He tirelessly built the music program from scratch at Erskine and taught generations of musicians for the next several decades. He encouraged students to compose as well as conduct and was always available to assist students with music before and after school. John was the first recipient of the District III Music Educator of the Year Award. That was only his day job. He took on scores of private students, so many of which went on to impact the music scene, not only in Maine but around the world.  There is barely a trumpet player under the age of 60 in Maine who isn’t familiar with John’s work.  As if that wasn’t enough, John’s virtuosity on trumpet made him a sought-after commodity from the Port City Allstars to the Al Corey Big Band, the Phil Rich Big Band, the Manchester Brass, the Tony Boffa Band, the Portland Jazz Orchestra and so many more. John’s playing, however, was not all big band gigs. He could be found in small trios, quartets, and in the orchestra pit doing music theater. When big names like Martha and the Vandellas and Natalie Cole came to Maine, John got the call.

John’s involvement in the Maine music scene exposed a need to bring jazz education to the younger generation. In the early ‘80s John called on a number of those Vegas contacts to come to Maine to work at the Maine Jazz Camp at the old Oak Grove Coburn School, in Vassalboro, exposing hundreds of young musicians to world renowned expertise for many summers.

Retired in 2003 from Erskine, John resumed his landscaping passion on his farm, in Palermo, that he and his wife Emily spent the last 30 years building into a home.

He is survived by his wife Emily; his children Jeffery Jones and his wife Angelique Breton, of Casco, Andrea Girimonte and her husband Al, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Erika Reay and her husband Brian, of China; his brother-in-law Frank Rende, of Augusta; nephews Nate Rende and his wife Suzanne, of Boothbay, Sam Rende and his wife Miki, of Wichita, Kansas, Nik Rende and his wife Kathy, of Augusta; and many grandchildren, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

John may have been small of stature but with a trumpet in his hands he was a giant.

John is predeceased by his parents and his sister Priscilla Rend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Erskine Academy gymnasium, 309 Windsor Road, So. China, Maine, on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Visitation will be from noon – 1 p.m., with a service directly following from 1 – 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

GRACE J. BUMFORD

SIDNEY – Grace Jacqueline Bumford, 84, of Sidney, passed away, following a short illness, at her home on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Grace was born on January 11, 1938, in Augusta, to Antoine J. Jean and Irene (Couture) Jean.

She married Donald Bumford on February 13, 1960, and they were married 42 years, until Donald’s passing in 2002.

She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, and the Cushnoc Senior Citizens Club. Grace was an avid Beano player and enjoyed the many friendships she made over the years playing Beano.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Donald; and her five brothers, Leo, Roland, Arthur, Donald, and Richard, and her six sisters, Diana, Leona, Juliette, Ida, Patricia, and Theresa.

Grace is survived by her children, Jerry and his wife Janet, of Augusta, and their children Forrest Bumford and his partner Kristen Pietri, their son Emmett, of Waterville, Kiersten (Bumford) Legere and her husband Ryan and their daughter, Quinn; Louise (Bumford) Dube and her husband Mike, of Sidney, their son Ryan and his wife Keely and their children Arianna, Dawson, Mason, and Jackson; and Roger “Bo” Bumford and his wife Casie, of Belgrade; and her sister, Joan Talbot.

Burial will take place in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, in Augusta, next to her husband Donald.

PEGGY S. MICHAUD

WINSLOW – Peggy Sawtelle Michaud, 76, passed away peacefully at her lifetime home on Monday, January 30, 2023, following a long illness.

Born in Waterville, Peggy was the baby daughter of Beatrice and Harlan Sawtelle. She met the love of her life in the sixth grade and married Dana Michaud, to whom she had been happily married to for the past 58 years. Peggy graduated from Winslow High School in 1965. She dedicated her life to nursing for 25 years while caring for her husband and three children.

Peggy loved watching her children and grandsons play sports, especially hockey. She enjoyed family weekends and vacations at the beaches of Maine. She had many fond memories of family reunions, birthdays, and holidays surrounded by family. Anyone that knew Peggy remembered her sense of humor and her gift of comforting people. Peggy always had pets in the house. She especially loved her standard poodle Rabil, who never left her side.

She is survived by her husband Dana; daughter Mary-Margaret, Harlan Michaud and wife Kim, and Peter Michaud and wife Patricia; multiple grandsons Matthew, Sam, Lucas, Dana and Eli; and several nieces and nephews; her siblings Barbara Michaud and husband Ron Michaud, Hona Longstaff-Lewis and husband Bruce Lewis, and David Sawtelle.

She was pre-deceased by her siblings Polly White, Ralph Sawtelle, Frederick Sawtelle, and her parents Harlan and Beatrice Sawtelle; her niece Susan White.

REBECCA L. HIGGINS

ALBION – Rebecca L. (Piper) Higgins, 74, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023, at her home, in Albion. She was born March 5, 1948, in Waterville, the daughter of Arthur H. and Shirley M (Elwell) Piper.

She graduated from Besse High School, in Albion, in 1967. On September 14, 1968, she married Freeman Higgins, in Albion. She was employed as a certified nurse’s aide at Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home, in Waterville, Woodlawn Nursing Home, in Skowhegan, and Bethany Nursing Home, in Winslow.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, wintering in Florida, and spending time with her granddaughters, following them to any activity she was able.

Rebecca was predeceased by her husband, Freeman Higgins.

She is survived by two sons, Lance Higgins and wife Valerie, of Albion, and Adam Higgins and wife Melissa, of Albion; granddaughters, Abigail Higgins and Hannah Higgins, both of Albion; sisters, Sharon McPhail, of Belgrade, Wanda Boivin, of Clinton, and Linda Weeks and husband Robert, of Fairfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.

GLADYS M. PRATT

WATERVILLE – Gladys Marilyn Pratt, 99, a former resident of Augusta and Greene, passed away Friday, February 3, 2023, at Oak Grove Center, in Waterville. She was born December 12, 1923, in Cumberland Center, the daughter of Herbert W. and Lucy G. (Lamson) Thompson.

Gladys attended Leeds grammar school and Monmouth Academy.

On March 31, 1940, in Greene, she married Marshall M. Pratt. Mr. Pratt passed away in 2001.

During World War II, Gladys worked as a welder at the shipyard in Portland. In 1951, Gladys started working at Albany International, in North Monmouth, as a finish mender, and retired in 1980. She owned and operated Red Roof Store, on Route 202, in Leeds, from 1967 to 1973.

Gladys was a member and past president of Webber Memorial V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #9526, in Winthrop, and was also a member of Androscoggin Grange #8.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, especially her flower gardens and doing ceramics.

She is survived by one son, Carlton L. Pratt and his wife Jean, of Winthrop; a daughter, Marilyn A. Morin; of Augusta; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lynda Pratt, of Winthrop; one brother, Robert E. Thompson and his wife Helene, of Simsbury, Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Marshall M. Pratt, Sr.; two sons, Marshall M. Pratt, Jr., Richard A. Pratt; two grandsons, Robert Morin and Christopher Pratt; son-in-law, Roger Morin; and a brother, Russell A. Thompson.

BELFAST — Eugene W. “Geno” Perry, 79, passed peacefully Monday, December 19, 2022, at the Sussman House, in Rockport.

The son of the late Elizabeth A. Wheeler and Fred A. Perry, Eugene was known for his outgoing personality, dry wit, kindness, willingness to help a friend and work ethic.

A lifetime member of the Improved Order of Redman Tarratine Tribe 13, Eugene enjoyed fishing, hunting, stopping by the garage and visiting with and checking on family and friends. Eugene spent his early years trimming trees with Lucas Tree Co. and in manufacturing before becoming a well-respected roofer, painter and handyman within the Belfast community. Eugene worked on many projects over the years, including the VFW roof painting the letters, the Opera House, and countless others.

Eugene loved the people he had met the most and would tell of the projects, the folks gone on and how Belfast had changed.

Eugene is survived by three children: Richard W. Perry, of Vassalboro, Joseph W. Perry, of Belfast, and daughter Carla Jean, of Georgia; Corrine Lawson, of Old Town, multiple grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Due to the season, burial services will be announced and held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, in Hartland.

CRAIG L. CROMMETT

CLINTON – Craig L. Crommett, 74, of Clinton, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023. Craig was born in the winter of 1948 and grew up in Mt. Vernon, enjoying life on Echo Lake.

He joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. After his honorable discharge he held many jobs before deciding on a career as a long-haul trucker. He traveled all the major routes from Maine to Florida to California. He could handle a big rig in any kind of weather conditions. Craig was a Master Maine Guide, guiding hunting and fishing trips and had an amazing sense of direction, deep in the woods or on old dirt roads.

Craig raised many hunting dogs, but his favorites were his Irish Jack Russell house pets. He coon hunted with a dear friend and together they made it to the World Coon Hunt. After Craig’s wife of 37 years, Ruth (Perkins) passed away he married Vicki (Hendsbee) who lost her husband of 37 years. Together they enjoyed motorcycling, four-wheeling, bowling on a league, golfing and Craig’s passion, bass fishing.

Craig was a member of the Somerset Bass Masters and fished numerable tournaments with some wonderful friends and co-anglers. His most memorable was the Toyota Bass Classic, in Tennessee.

Craig is survived by his wife, Vicki; his daughter Lisa Kiniklis (Will); his son Craig S Crommett (Amy); his step-son Adam Hendsbee (Rachel); granddaughters Hannah Crommett, Leigha Crommett and Elizabeth Crommett; his grandsons, Max Kiniklis and Theo Kiniklis; step-grandson Gunnar Hendsbee; sister Patricia Mason (Mike); sister-in-law Lynn Dolloff; a nephew, nieces and some cousins.

Craig was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ruthy, and his brother David.

As per his wishes there will be no funeral. His burial will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, in Belgrade.

ELAINE W. BURTON

WATERVILLE – Elaine W. Burton, 90, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at North­ern Light Con­tinuing Care, in Waterville. Elaine was born on Feb­ruary 20, 1932, in Waterville, to Everett Watson and Alys (Luce) Watson.

She graduated from Williams High, in Oakland, in 1950. During her high school years she was active in the orchestra and choral groups, and learned to play the piano. Some years later she gave piano lessons, in her home, to many local students. Following high school graduation she completed one year of nurses training in Portland, returning home in 1951 to marry Richard N. Burton and began raising their family.

Elaine was involved in leadership of the 4-H Club, in Sidney, she was a member of Eastern Star and on the advisory board for the International Order of Rainbow Girls. She tended large vegetable gardens, and as a result, produced jellies, jams, applesauce and many other goodies for family and friends. She also raised beautiful flower beds every summer with the Oakland Baptist Church and Alden’s Camps being the recipients of her stunning dahlia and gladiola arrangements for many years.

While her children were in school, Elaine completed three years of college and then became a substitute teacher for SAD #47 (RSU #18) which eventually led to her role as a Title I tutor at the James H. Bean School, in Sidney, for many years. During these years she continued to pursue her passion of music while singing in the choir at the Oakland Baptist Church and with the Colby Community Chorale under the direction of Paul Machlin.

In 1996 she retired and went on the trip of a lifetime to Australia and New Zealand with her sister Gail and brother-in-law Lester Smith, surviving a flood while there. She spent many summers traveling to Lexington Township in her camper where she enjoyed spending time around the campfire with her family and friends. She also made numerous trips to Florida with her daughter Melissa Finnimore and her family where she developed a love for all things Snow White.

In 1999, she was accompanied by her grandchildren Jacob, Jessica, Jonathan and other family members to ring in the new millennium at Disney World.

Elaine was an avid reader and belonged to a women’s book club for many years. An additional hobby was creating baby afghans. She started making these with the arrival of her first grandchild, Jonathan Finnimore, over 50 years ago. Around 300 babies have been wrapped in “Nana’s” love over the years as they were blessed by her baby afghans. She was also very passionate about feeding and caring for a wide assortment of birds who kept her entertained while they visited her many feeders. As a result of some of her travels, she became an avid collector of bells.

In 2017, Elaine became a member of Faith Evangelical Free Church, in Waterville. In September 2018 she was baptized in Snow Pond with her son Mark and daughter-in-law Nancy Burton. She attended many Bible studies with the Amazing Gray’s during the past five years. Her faith and love of the Lord was strong. Her favorite verse was Psalm 121:1-2 and favorite quote “The heart of the matter is the heart.”

Elaine was predeceased by her parents, her husband Richard, her son Matthew and daughter Maureen.

Elaine is survived by her daughter Melissa Finnimore and husband Karl; son Mark Burton and wife Nancy; four grandchildren, Jonathan Finnimore, Jason Finnimore, Jacob Burton and Jessica Marden and six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Andrew, Elijah, Adam, Fynn and Everett; her sister Gail Smith and husband Lester; as well as many nieces, and nephews.

There will be a private graveside service for the family at a later date this spring.

DORIS L. PHILLIPS

OAKLAND – Doris Luce Phillips, 98, of Oakland, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023. Doris was born on June 10, 1924, to Olivia and Clyde Luce, in Oakland.

She graduated from Oakland schools. She met Basil Phillips and they wed on June 29, 1946. They went on to have one daughter, Nancy Phillips LaCombe. When Doris had Nancy, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother, as well as grandmother. She also took care of her two grandchildren and even great-grandson when he was born. She also took care of many relatives and their children as well throughout the years.

Doris also sold Avon for many years and prided herself on being one of the oldest to do so. She also enjoyed Eastern Star meetings later in life. Doris was passionate about shopping, traveling until she wasn’t able to, making her beloved bracelets for friends and family, and watching the New England Patriots. She was always ready for her weekly shopping trips, going out to eat and, of course, getting her scratch tickets. Most anyone who met her, would instantly call her “Gram.” She lived a full life and had fun doing so. We will miss her greatly.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Basil Phillips, four brothers, one sister and one grandson-in-law Tavis Caron.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Phillips LaCombe, son-in-law Milton LaCombe; granddaughters Sarah LaCombe (Gabe Martin) and Nicole LaCombe; great -grandson Matthew Martin; one brother Floyd Luce (Cookie Luce); one sister Mary Luce (Cameron and Alexis); sisters-in-law, Clarita Luce and Gloria Luce; and many nieces and nephews.

BEVERLY L. KELLEY

ALBION – Beverly Lynne Sawyer Kelley, 82, better known as “Gram”, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Beverly was born on March 17, 1940, the daughter of the late Norman Sawyer and Phyllis (York) Pratt.

Gram learned how to farm at a young age, developing a deep love for animals that would continue through her entire life. She graduated from Penacook High School and spent her summers at the fairs, where she would meet the love of her life, David Kelley, and they married on March 18, 1961.

She was a hairdresser for nearly 50 years at Penny’s Hairstyles and “Personali-Tease”, in Waterville. Gram had an enormous heart for her community and welcomed anyone, never turning a stranger away. Her work day did not begin or end at the salon. You would often hear her say, “Every day is a great day” and “work isn’t a bad word.”

Gram was a regular in her local church, 4-H Club, and Maine fair circuit, with much love for her huge “fair family”. You could always find her watching her grandchildren doing whatever they loved, whatever they were doing, wherever they were. She really hated to miss one event. She worked 34 years alongside her family in the New Hampshire Building at Eastern State Exposition in Springfield, Massachusetts. If you know Gram, you know her love for basketball. Gram was a parent, coach, and huge fan of her Lawrence Bulldogs, in Fairfield; never missing a game!

Beverly was a faithful friend, sister, aunt, amazing mother, and most of all “Gram” to everyone that had the honor of knowing her. Her service to children, the less fortunate, and her entire community was remarkable. This world would be a better place if everyone had a little Gram in them. Turn your ear to the heavens and you will hear God saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant, welcome home.”

Gram was predeceased by her husband, David Kelley, daughter-in-law, Mary Kelley, great grandson Noah Blye, brothers-in-law, George Sweatt and Dean Kelley; and nephew, Scott Sweatt.

She is survived by her six children, Lynne Blye (Bruce), Karey Kelley, Kristen Wescott (Scott), Keith Kelley (Debbie), Kern Kelley (Michaela), and Katrina Dumont (Rick); 13 grandchildren, Katie Gerow (Dustin), Ricky Blye (Hattie), Jesse Kelley (Meg), Kelley Wescott (Lucas Paradis), Kolby and Karlee Wescott, Kaiden and Kasen Kelley, Derick Dumont (Raeghan Moody), Lexie, Lizie and Drake Dumont; great grandchildren, Chandler and Colton Gerow, and Bowen and Brock Blye; her sisters Penny Sweatt and Willie Grenier (Mike), nephews Daren and Brian Sweatt (Belinda), Jared Grenier (Samantha); nieces Jennifer Buck (Jason) and Ariel Grenier; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

JEANNETTE B. BOURGOIN

WINSLOW – Jeannette B. Bourgoin, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2023, while a resident of Northern Light Continuing Care Lake­wood, following a period of declining health. She was born August 7, 1927, in Waterville, the daughter of John and Josephine Veilleux.

On July 4, 1947, Jeannette married Roland W. Bourgoin, her lifelong partner for 67 years until his passing in 2014. Jeannette and Roland raised a family that included three sons and a daughter. Family meant a lot to both of them.

She was first and foremost a homemaker although she did have occasional part time jobs as the years permitted. They included the American Heart Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Association. She also loved doing crafts for family and friends.

Upon retirement, Roland and Jeannette relocated to Wichita Falls, Texas, where they bought a house, made many new friends and got to spend more time with their children and their families who lived there. However, after a couple of years, they decided they really needed to be where their roots were and so returned to Maine.

In addition to her parents, Jeannette was predeceased by her husband, her daughter Jean (Bourgoin) Dierig and her youngest sibling, Lee Veilleux.

Immediate family survivors include sons John and wife Elaine, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Wayne and wife Carmen, of Winslow, Lee and wife Cheryl, of Wichita Falls; son-in-law Greg Dierig, also of Wichita Falls; grandchildren Aimee Bourgoin, of Waterville, Scott Bourgoin and wife Dawn Madore-Bourgoin, of Saco, Mark Bourgoin, of Waterville, Margo Bean-Garrett, of Danielsville, Georgia, Brandon Dolley and wife Alisha, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Cory Bourgoin and Ryan Bourgoin, both of Wichita Falls, Texas; great-grandchildren include Madeline, Isaac, Liam and Sonny Garrett, of Danielsville, Georgia, Noah Bourgoin, of Waterville, Cohen Bourgoin, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Korbyn Dolley also of Wichita Falls, Texas; brothers Roland Veilleux, of Skowhegan, Lucian Veilleux and wife Glennis, of Waterville; and her sister, Vernette (Veilleux) Dechaine and husband Roland, of Pittsfield; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In accordance with Jeannette’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Notre Dame Catholic Church, on Silver Street, in Waterville, on Saturday, January 21.

Interment was subsequently held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Augusta.

JOSEPH GIRARD

WINSLOW – Joseph Giarad, 87, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023, while vacationing in Florida with his wife Sylvia. Born Edward Joseph Girard on May 19, 1935, to Cyril Girard and Eleanor Denis, he was raised by his grandparents Octave and Mary-Anne Girard.

He grew up in Winslow and attended St. John the Baptist Catholic School and graduated from Winslow high school in 1952. He then attended Thomas College, in Waterville, and graduated in 1954.

After graduating from Thomas College he enlisted in the U.S Army and served at Fort Dix, New Jersey, until his honorable discharge in 1956. Joe then served in the Maine National Guard.

In 1956 he married Sylvia Brochu and was happily married for 34 years until her passing in 1990. They had three children together.

After his time in the army he went to work at Waterville Savings Bank in 1957 and became their first branch manager in Pittsfield in 1971. While in Pittsfield he was an active member of the Kiwanis and the Knights of Columbus, he also became a proud member of the muzzle loaders of Maine. In 1991 he married Eleanor MacDonald and spent 15 years together until her passing in 2006. In 2010 he married Sylvia Taylor, of Albion.

Since a young age he enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, canoeing, and archery. A man of many talents, these are just a few of the hobbies he enjoyed very much; woodworking, leather crafts, and making his own bows and arrows. Later in life he still enjoyed archery and was a member of Traditional Archers of Maine, going out to dinner with his family and spending time with family and friends. Always an active man enjoyed going out dancing weekly with his wife Sylvia. To most she went by Tobey.

He was predeceased by his brother Lawrence Girard in 2017 and a granddaughter Maranatha King in 2019.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia of 13 years; sons Peter Girard, of Winslow, Paul and wife Mary Girard, of Pittsfield; a daughter Lisa and husband Paul Turcotte, of Oakland; granddaughter Penny-lane King, of Bangor; granddaughter Stephanie Plante and partner Nate, of Bangor; grandsons Jacob Plante and partner Sandy, of Waterville, Joseph Girard, of Pittsfield; great grandchildren, Jasmine Roy, of Connecticut, Jacoby and Sophie, of Waterville; sister Gloria and husband Clifford Herbert; and several nieces and nephews.

DANA P. CHESLEY

CLINTON – Dana P. Chesley, 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2023. He was born on Oct­ober 20, 1947, in Clinton, the son of Kenneth and Jeanette Chesley.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family around a campfire and grill. Before the passing of his brothers, you would find them playing a competitive game of cribbage. The past 11 years Dana spent his time working at Clinton Variety in Bottle Redemption. He was very well known and liked by the community.

Dana was predeceased by his parents and in-laws Cecil and Maude Lee, brothers, Kenneth, David, and Harvey, as well as son, Michael Killam II, and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Chesley; daughters Cyndie and her husband Durwood Dugans, Jill and her husband Tim Dojnia, Lynn and her husband Aaron Chapman; and sons Jason Chesley, and Calvin Killam and his wife Penny; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

No funeral or burial is planned at this time. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Town and Country Trail Riders Snowmobile Club, 35 Clubhouse Rd, Clinton, Maine.

WATERVILLE – Esther Virginia Whiteman Hill passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023. Esther was born in Lonaconing, Maryland.

Esther was the wife of the late Rev. George Paul Hill.

After high school she attended Zion Bible College, in Providence, Rhode Island, where she met her future husband, Paul. Together they ministered in New York, Connecticut, Missouri and Maine. Their last pastorate was in Readfield.

Esther is survived by three sons and their families, George Hill and his wife Sabrina of Duncan, South Carolina, and their children Alisha and her husband Robbie, and their children Ian and William and grandson Austin and his wife Dominique and their children Creighton and Annabelle; James Hill and his wife Susan and their daughter Claire of Greer, South Carolina, David Hill and his wife Penny, of Sidney, and their daughters, Candice and Jamie and granddaughter Malarie; brother Glenn Whiteman and his wife Nellie and brother Stan Whiteman.

Esther was predeceased by great-grandson Dylan.

Esther will be taken to Connecticut to be laid to rest with her husband.

LUCILLE WINSLOW

WATERVILLE – Lucille Winslow, 95, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023, of natural causes, at Lakewood Continuing Care, in Waterville.

Lucille was the only child of Albert J. and Egline Quirion.

She was raised and attended public schools in Winslow, becoming lead drum majorette in high school as well as prom queen. She was a member of the class of 1946.

It was in high school that she met Jim Winslow. They were married in 1946.

Lucille was ever active. She was a master seamstress and knitter. She enjoyed cooking, especially at the holidays. Her appetizer biscuits with bleu cheese barely made it out of the oven before the family started in on them. She worked at Butlers Department Store, in Waterville. Later, Lucille worked at Northeast Laboratories, in Winslow, for over 30 years, becoming head of Quality Control. Lu enjoyed attending all three grandchildren’s events over the years. She adored being their Nana.

Lucille was predeceased by her parents, Albert J. and Egline Quirion; her husband Jimmy Winslow; her daughter-in-law Betty Winslow; and her grandson, Chris Winslow.

She leaves behind, to continue her legacy: Rosemary J. Winslow, of Waterville, and her wife Jody Rich, Dana Winslow, of Hallowell, Brian Winslow, of Ware, Massachusetts, and Kelly Winslow, of Winslow, his wife Jennifer, and their two adult children Mackenzie and Cameron.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Monument St., in Winslow, on Tuesday, January 31, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery, in Waterville, held later in the spring.

DARLENE E. MARQUETTE

WINDSOR—Darlene E. Marquette, 62, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, following a long illness. She was born on September 14, 1960, a daughter of Albert Maskell and Doreen (Lord) Perkins.

Darlene grew up in both New Hampshire and Maine, and loved being a mother to her sons, Mark, Tim, and James. She later settled in Windsor and worked at Country Manor, in Coopers Mills, as a cook for many years. In September of 2006, she was married to Daniel Marquette.

Darlene was an animal lover: her fur babies included Izzy, Annie, Rosa, Brody, and May. She enjoyed having dogs, cats, birds and even horses to care for throughout the years. Above all, she loved spending time with family, particularly her grandchildren. She will be remembered as strong-willed, generous, and undoubtedly, one of a kind.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Marquette; her sons, Mark Chambers and his wife Lauri, Tim Chambers and his wife Jaimie, James Longmire and his partner Kelsey Libold; and step-son Andre Marquette; grandchildren, Benjamin, Megan, Matthew, Jacob, Tim, Alex, Chevvey, Damien, Aaleah, Brianna, Allie and Gunner; siblings, Tina Nadeau, Regina Adjutant, Bob Maskell, Tony Maskell, Donald Perkins, Rebecca Post, and Diane Marston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, and a sister, Jolene Maskell-Stevens.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 1 p.m., at the John C. Shirley Cemetery, on Berry Rd., in New Durham, New Hampshire.

SEAN W. KIERNAN

SIDNEY – Sean William Kiernan, 51, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. He was born on November 5, 1971, a son of Edward and Judith (Haberern) Kiernan.

Sean grew up in Massachusetts and as a teenager moved to Maine with his family and graduated from Gardiner Area High School, in the class of 1989. Following graduation, he attended college at Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts. Sean worked in the food and beverage industry for most of his career and spent five years working for Mainehealth.

On September 27, 2003, he married Kathleen Logan. Together, they raised two sons, Aidan and Connor, who were his pride and joy. Sean attended all of their sporting events and supported all of their endeavors. He enjoyed fishing, boating, cooking and was an avid reader. Sean will be remembered for his infectious laugh and his love for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Kiernan, of Sidney; his sons, Aidan Kiernan and Connor Kiernan, of Sidney; his parents, Edward and Judith Kiernan, of Massachusetts; his siblings, Tammy Kiernan, of Connecticut, and Christopher Kiernan, of Massachusetts; his mother- and father-in-law, Joyce and William M. Logan; sister-in-law, Erin Murphy and her husband Jim, and brother-in-law, William P. WATERVILLE – Sister Claire Labbee, 88, formerly known as Sr. Thérèse d’Avila, died on Friday, January 20, 2023, at Mount Joseph, Waterville, following a brief illness. She was in her 68th year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Lyon.

Claire was born on August 27, 1934, in Jay, the daughter of Donat and Emelda Samson Labbee and the youngest of seven children. She attended St. Rose of Lima school in Chisholm and the Academy of St. Joseph in South Berwick, graduating in 1952. She earned a BA in Math and Science from Lamennais College, in Alfred, in 1962 and later, a master’s degree in Education from Boston College in 1975.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon in 1953 and made her first vows on August 15, 1955. Sister Claire taught at Holy Family School, Lewiston, Sacred Heart School, Auburn, the Academy of St. Joseph, South Berwick, and Mount Merici School, Waterville. After receiving her master’s degree, she served as Religious Education Coordinator at St. Louis Parish, Auburn. She was in leadership from 1977-1987 as Provincial of the Sisters in Maine and on the Provincial Team from 1993-1999 and again from 2005-2011. Certified in Clinical Pastoral Education from Andover Newton Theological School, she then ministered as a chaplain at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Lewiston, and Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home, in Waterville. There, she founded the Mission and Pastoral Care Department. She retired from the Mount in 2007. In her retirement she visited and prayed with other residents as well as staff at the Mount and was the primary author of a book of one-page biographies of every Sister of St. Joseph who has served in Maine over their 115 year history.

Sr. Claire was generous in her appreciation of those around her and unafraid to speak out if she believed something was wrong. She always advocated for the employees wherever she worked and sought to include the workers’ voice in any decisions.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Evelina Caron, and her brothers Rosaire, Emile, Fernand, and Leo.

She is survived by the Sisters of St. Joseph, with whom she shared life and ministry; her brother Rene, with whom she spoke by phone every evening; and many beloved nieces, nephews, their spouses, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; along with many friends and former coworkers with whom she stayed in touch.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, January 25, at Notre Dame Church, in Waterville.

ERNEST D. WHITE

SIDNEY – Ernest Daniel White, 79, of Sidney, passed away Friday morning, January 20, 2023, at his residence, following an illness. He was born in Waterville, on March 24, 1943, the son of Mary and Ernest White.

He graduated from Waterville High School and worked at the Waterville Morning Sentinel for 37 years. He was a lifelong member of the Waterville Elks Lodge #905. Following retirement, he worked odd jobs which kept him busy, active, and fit. He was a volunteer at the Sidney Food Bank.

Ernie was an avid outdoors enthusiast who enjoyed hiking, fishing, and hunting. In his later years, he relished his wintertime in Florida.

Ernie adored his family and spent as much time with them as possible. His unique sense of humor and kindness made him a gift to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce White, who passed away 30 years ago.

He is survived by his son, Dan White and wife Erica, of Jefferson; daughter, Margo White and husband Andrew, of Rockport, Massachusetts; his longtime partner, Deanna Bard, of Sidney; grandchildren, Olivia Howe, Sam Howe, Basel White, and Ava White; his siblings, Herbie White, Daphney Fletcher, Jo McGuire, and Maryanne White.

PAUL J. LEVASSEUR SR.

BENTON – Paul J. Levasseur Sr., 76, of Benton, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022. Paul was born to Edmond C. Levasseur and Antoinette Roy Levasseur, on October 10, 1946, in Waterville.

Paul grew up in Winslow where he also attended school. Paul honorably served in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968.

During Paul’s break he married his best friend and high school sweetheart Camellia S. Thibodeau Levasseur, on September 4, 1967.

Paul enjoyed spending time with his family, however Paul loved nothing more than each grandchild and great-grandchild from the second they were born. He enjoyed the outdoors from campfires, gardening, cutting wood and making maple syrup where he taught his children many trades. Paul loved his sweets, and he loved to feed them to all the children when they walked through the door. He also loved sitting in the screenhouse watching the birds that came to the many bird feeders. Last but not least, Paul loved serving the Lord; and if he could leave a last message to you, it would be to follow Jesus and receive him as your Lord and Savior.

He was predeceased by his baby girl Lisa M. Levasseur; parents Edmond and Antoinette Levasseur; brothers and sisters Conrad Levasseur, Lucille and Jerry Gagnon, Jeanne Rodrigue, Anne and Charlie Merrill, James Levasseur, Marie Levasseur, Donald Levasseur, Phil Levasseur, Mike Levasseur, James Thibodeau, and Joseph Thibodeau III.

WATERVILLE – Frederick Joseph Ruder, 75, died on Thursday, December 29, 2022.

Frederick lived in many places around the world as a child, and in adulthood eventually settled in Maine.

In 1972 Frederick opened The Sign of the Sun, in Waterville, thus establishing long lasting deep roots in the Waterville area. Sign of the Sun was not only an occupation for Frederick, but also a passion that brought together his skills of artistry, community, and entrepreneurship for 49 years. Frederick will also be remembered for his sense of humor, his eclectic collections, and his love of reading.

Frederick is survived by his wife Lisa; children Nathaniel Ruder (Janalyn), Teague Ruder (Liz), Elsbeth Ebenhoe (Marcus), Maggie Ruder (Paul Dickover); his 11 grandchildren; and his brother Steve (Vicki).

WATERVILLE – Kristin Ellen French, 38, of Waterville, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, following a brief illness.

Kristin graduated from Messalonskee High School, in Oakland. She loved cooking and baking cakes. She created beautiful needlework crafts including exquisite lace. Kristin was an avid reader who cherished her Bible. She enjoyed watching movies with her son, phone calls with her granddaughters and doing adult coloring books with her daughter.

Her survivors include her children Hannah Owens and Allen “A.J.” Albert, Jr.; granddaughters Amiya Owens and Layla Arbour; her mother Kelly Lessard, stepfather Raymond “Tuffy” Brickett; grandmother Gail Alexander French; and sisters Carol Brickett Bickford and Rae-Anne Marie. Kristin is also survived by Hal Stratton, Sr. who was a father figure to her for the last 15 years; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kristin was predeceased by her father, Dennis Hutchings Jr.; grandparents Georgie Gagne, Dennis Hutchings Sr., Frederick French Sr., Amy Bezanson Brickett and Edward Brickett; and brother Peter Brickett.

A celebration of Kristin’s life was held on January 7, 2023, at the Bessey Building, 22 Main Street, Albion.

CHARLIE A. MEANS JR.

WATERVILLE – Charlie A. Means Jr., 101, passed away at Mount Saint Joseph, in Waterville, on Saturday December 31, 2022. Charlie was born to Charlie Sr. and Eunice (Reynolds) Means at the family homestead in Unity Plantation in 1921.

Charlie and his sisters, Juanita and Gertrude, spent many happy hours together there. He learned many trades from his father such as blacksmithing, fixing wagons, wood cutting, farming, and gardening.

He attended the Unity Plantation School until his father became ill and was needed to help run the farm. Charlie met the love of his life, Dorothy Rawley while attending church. They were wed on December 15, 1951, and enjoyed many happy years together until her passing in 2017.

They began their life together in Waterville where they welcomed their children Cheryl and Charlie III. They moved to Winslow in 1960. He was employed for over 30 years at W.S. Pillsbury and Sons, in Waterville, doing sales, installation, and service of farm equipment until they closed in 1983. Next Charlie worked as a Correctional Officer in the Somerset County Correctional Facility, in Skowhegan, for 15 years.

Family time was important to Charlie, he loved taking trips to visit his family and exploring new places. Later he built a camp on East Pond, in Smithfield, with the help of his family to enjoy time with his children. There they enjoyed many family gatherings, going for boat rides, driving the boat for water skiing, and playing cards.

After retiring, Charlie and Dot enjoyed traveling with their camper and was proud to have visited all 50 states. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren watching them participate in sporting, school, and church events. Charlie also enjoyed doing puzzles, working on building projects and could figure out a way to fix almost anything.

Charlie was a very active member of Getchell Street Baptist Church for over 70 years. He taught Sunday School classes and served on the Property and Pulpit Committees. Charlie was honored to serve on the Diaconate Board as a Deacon, a role he held until he met the Lord face to face.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Dot; his son, Chuck; his sisters, Juanita Lanpher and Gertrude Ricker; and several other family members.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Cheryl McInnis and her husband Dana; daughter- in-law. Tina Means; grandchildren, Craig McInnis and his wife Jennifer, Christopher McInnis and his wife Rachel, CariAnn Means; his great-grandchildren, Cameron, Jaelynn, Cora, Cobie and Charlie McInnis; brothers-in-law, Richard Rawley, David Rawley and his wife Marie; several other nieces, nephews, and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., on Sunday, January 8, at Getchell Street Baptist Church, 3 Getchell Street, Waterville.

RICHARD B. STARKEY JR.

Richard Bert Starkey, Jr., 59, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023. He was born October 25, 1963, to Richard B. and Virginia B. (Hearn) Starkey in Waterville, Maine.

He grew up in China, attending China Elementary School and Winslow High School. He was active in scouts, and played baseball, basketball and football. He was full of spirit, and played hard at life.

Richard joined the U.S.Air Force and served as a Munitions Systems Specialist for over nine years with assignments in Alaska, North Dakota, Florida, Korea, and Iraq.

After discharge Dick worked as a construction manager throughout Florida, the Caribbean and South America. While working in the Dominican Republic he met Patricia and they had two sons together.

When the job ended he lived in Florida until he got a call from home. His dad’s health began to fail quickly, so he came home to Maine to live with and help care for both parents. He worked as a handyman around the small town he had grown up in, renewing friendships and making more memories.

Following his dad’s passing, and his mom going into long-term care, Richard returned for a brief time to the Dominican Republic and his family there. Upon returning to Maine he worked for a time at VA Togus Hospital. His battle with alcohol and subsequent declining health made his last few years difficult. Never-the-less Dick was the helpful, playful neighbor at his apartment complex in Farmingdale where he was loved and will be remembered fondly.

In July 2022 he was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer, a battle he was not prepared for, but he fought anyway with whatever treatment he could get. He made it by a few hours into the new year.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, sister Lydia, and brother George.

Richard’s spirit lives on in his two sons, Richard and Danny and their mom, Patricia. He is also survived by siblings Edward and partner Mark Colonna, Sandra and husband Paul Keller, Heide and husband Charles Hotham and sister-in-law Dawn Starkey; nieces and nephews, Amy (and Jamie) Starkey, Nick Starkey, Anna, Aaron (and Sara), and Abby Keller, Summer and Grady Hotham as well as many cousins and great- nieces and great-nephews.

Richard was proud to be a veteran and grateful for the care he received at both the VA Togus as well as the VA Hospitals in Boston. In honor of Richard, find a veteran, make a way to show your appreciation for their service, and bring some joy into their life.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14, 10 a.m., at the China Baptist Church, with Ron Morrell and Ed Hatch officiating. Family and friends are welcome to come to encourage each other and share memories at the reception to follow.

Burial will be at the Maine Veterans Cemetery at a later date.

JILL D. COLOMY

SIDNEY – Jill D. Colomy, 61, passed away peacefully at Bella Point Nursing Home, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. She was born on August 3, 1961,, to Kenneth E. Colomy Sr. and the late Jacquelyn R. (Finnemore) Colomy.

Jill graduated from Cony High School, in Augusta, in 1979. She then went on to the University of Maine at Augusta, where she received her associates degree in accounting.

In her free time, she enjoyed going to the beach, riding her bike, and spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her mother Jacquelyn Colomy; and her brother, Kenneth Colomy Jr.

Jill is survived by her son, Timothy Colomy; sisters, Karen O’Connor and husband Kevin, of Mt Vernon, Judy Colomy, of Augusta, Debra Colomy and her partner Ed, of Augusta; many nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, in Augusta, on Monday, January 9, at 7 p.m.

A private graveside service will take place at a later date.

WINSLOW – Alphonse “Babe” LePage, 90, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023. Babe was born to the late Victoria (Veilleux) and Alphonse LePage, Sr.

He attended Waterville schools. Babe was drafted to the U.S. Army and served his country from 1955-1957.

He married Theresa Thibodeau in 1953 and together they raised four children.

Babe started his masonry business, A. LePage & Sons Masonry in 1964 after learning the trade from other seasoned masons. He retired in the early ’90s at which time his sons took over the business. He loved checking on “the boys” to see how they were doing on their jobs. Babe was a very caring and generous man, often helping those less fortunate.

After retirement you could often find him tinkering in his garage or working on his woodpile. He enjoyed his Sunday rides to the coast, shopping at discount stores in town and having coffee with friends at McDonald’s. His favorite place to be was sitting on his swing at camp on Unity Pond or spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; children David (Beverly), of Burnham, Denis (Michelle), of Winslow, Daryl (Trish Crowell), of Winslow, and Melissa White (Markus), of Winslow; sisters Jeannette Boudreau, of Waterville, Pearl DeLong (Michael), of Florida, and brother, Raymond (Pauline Maxwell), of Waterville; sister-in-law, Georgette Dwan, of Florida; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, January 12, at 10 a.m., at St. John Catholic Church, in Winslow.

MARJORIE RODRIGUE

WATERVILLE – Marjorie Rodrigue, 87, passed away on Thursday January 5, 2023, at North­ern Light Con­tinuing Care, Lakewood, in Waterville, where she had been residing for a little over a year. Marjorie was born on March 10, 1935, the daughter of Joseph and Carmen (Vashon) LeBrasseur.

While she was educated in Waterville, she attended Sacred Heart Convent, in Jackman, for a short while in 1947.

She was a graduate of the Waterville High School class of 1953. On November 3, 1956, she married Louis Rodrigue and they were married for 53 years before he died on April 6, 2010.

They were blessed with their children Lee, Celeste, Kathy and Linda. She worked most of her adult life at Depositor’s Trust Co. and later Key Bank, both in Waterville, where she held various positions and titles, retiring in 1997.

Marjorie was recently described as having a tough exterior with a marshmallow heart. This is exemplified by her greatest love, being family and family events. She was her happiest when planning birthdays, holidays, especially Christmas, family gatherings such as the “annual lobster feed, going to “camp” on Webber Pond”, and other family events. In her younger days, Marjorie was a great seamstress and made lots of clothes for her three girls. Later in life, she developed a passion for basketmaking and did a great job at this. She loved to share her baskets with family and friends, usually as a gift and they would come filled with all kinds of goodies. She also spent her time reading, playing games on the computer and crocheting kitchen dish towels.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband; her parents; her brothers Joseph “Junior”, Charles (and his wife Liette) and Robert.

She is survived by her children, Lee and wife, Corinna Rodrigue, Celeste and husband Joe Theriault, Kathy and husband Steve Francoeur, Linda and husband Joel Caron; grandchildren Danielle and husband Jesse Woods, Eric and wife Kristina Theriault and Stacey Francoeur; great-grandchildren Caden and Atley Woods, Olive and Emmitt Theriault; sister-in-law, Lauraly Lebrasseur, Gabriel Marquis, Claudette Starbird and brother-in-law, Gene Rodrigue and his wife Susan; along with several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi’s Notre Dame Catholic Church, 116 Silver St., Waterville, at 10 a.m., on Tuesday January 17, with burial in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, in Waterville, later in the spring.

CHINA – Rémy Joel Pettengill, 17, died unexpectedly Saturday, January 7, 202, at Maine Medical Center, in Portland. He was born in Waterville, on December 29, 2005, a son of Lee H. and Danielle C. (Morin) Pettengill.

Rémy was a student at Erskine Academy, in South China, class of 2024.

He had earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2019 and was a member of Troop #479, in China. Some of Rémy’s other proudest accomplishments included working at Pine Tree Camp, becoming both an American Red Cross Lifeguard and a BSA Lifeguard, assisting to coach his brother’s middle school track team, working at Camp Bomazeen, and volunteering with China Masonic Lodge #45. He was a member of the Erskine track team, National Honor Society, and the BSA Order of the Arrow – Madockawanda Lodge.

Rémy is survived by his parents, Lee and Danielle Pettengill, of South China; his two brothers: Aiden H. Pettengill and Bryson L. Pettengill, both of South China; maternal grandparents: Joel P. and Francine L. (Gagnon) Morin, of Madawaska; paternal grandparents: Arthur H. and Helen V. (Keany) Pettengill, of Chiefland, Florida; paternal uncle Luke (Trish) Pettengill, of Sharon, Vermont, as well as many extended family members and friends.

A gathering of family and friends (all are welcome!) will be held on Saturday, January 14, from 9 – 11 a.m., at Erskine Academy, 309 Windsor Rd., South China.

A Celebration of Life will follow at 11 a.m. The family asks that casual attire be worn with “crazy socks”. They also request that you bring a pair of socks for donation in Rémy’s honor to homeless shelters and veterans groups.

KERVIN L. PEABODY

WINDSOR – Kervin L. Peabody, 63, of Windsor, passed at his home, in Windsor, following a long illness. Kervin was born on October 18, 1959, in Augusta, the son of LuRoy Peabody and Carolyn Jackson.

He attended Gardiner school system.

Kervin was an over the road tractor-trailer driver for years. He loved working on vehicles such as mechanical work, restoration, including painting them. He loved sneaking off with his wife Nancy, heading up north to go camping, hunting, and sightseeing for the wildlife. Snowmobiling as well.

Kervin had a big heart and was a very generous guy. Helping anybody out, no matter what he was doing himself or who it was; even a total stranger. Kervin had the kind of personality he could get along with anyone. He loved joking, especially teasing his brothers. Most of all he thoroughly loved teasing his wife Nancy just as much!

Kervin was predeceased by his parents, father LuRoy Peabody and mother Carolyn Jackson, sisters Maida Peabody and Buffy Peabody, brothers Larry Peabody, and Ronnie Peabody.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Nancy J. Peabody; children, sons Kervin Dowdy, Joseph Swift, Steve Peabody and Eric Peabody; daughter Andrea Veilleux; brother Bobby Peabody, sister Ina Cadwallader, brothers Mike Peabody, Shawn Peabody and Scott Peabody; sister Tammy Abbott; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

FRANCES L. HODSDON

JEFFERSON – Frances Lorraine Hodsdon, 95, of Jefferson, died on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Sussman Hospice House, in Rockport. She was born in Portland on December 30, 1926, the daughter of Sumner and Hazel (Woodbury) Hodsdon.

After growing up in Wilton, the family moved to Massachusetts. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston, Massachusetts. This was to be her destiny-producing and teaching her passion of the art of printmaking and drawing.

Marriage to Richardson Howe took her to Delaware where she started a family and continued her education. She followed her passion teaching out of the home. Later going to Ohio where she completed her BFA at Kent State University and took courses toward her masters degree. She was on campus in May 1970 when four students were killed during the Kent State peace rally.

Life took a turn after her divorce and passing of her father, and she was once again in Maine in 1975 on the family blueberry farm overlooking Clary Lake. Here she thrived – teaching at the University of Maine and Round Top Center for the Arts, all the while working from a home studio and immersing herself into her environment, producing work from views of the lake, blueberries and later bark on the trees. Never content with plain white she took the lowly resin chair to previously undiscovered places starting with fogging black paint on them. This led to her show in 2004, “Frances Hodsdon, Friends and Family” at Roundtop Center for the Arts.

This was not her first exhibition. In the early 1990s, as she became known in the art world, Frances’ work was featured in both solo and group exhibitions at many well-known galleries throughout Maine. Solo exhibitions include the 1991 ”Verticality” exhibit, at Unity College Art Gallery, “Maui Series” at Le Va-tout Gallery in 1993 (following her trip to Hawaii), “Death & Memory” and “Paper Works” at Maine Coast Artists in 1996 and 1998, and “Etchings” at Uncas Farms in 2002. Her prints were added to collections at the Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts, Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Farnsworth Museum of Art, Rockland, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland. Frances was featured several times in the Portland Press Herald and as recently as September 2021 by The Boston Printmakers.

Her legacy will be the many students she taught that will carry on the love of art she instilled in them.

She was predeceased by her brother, James S. and wife, Phyllis Hodsdon; and nephew, Christopher A. Hodsdon.

Frances is survived by sons Jeffrey Howe, of Jefferson, Gregory F. and wife Dianne Howe, Elkton Maryland, Bradley M. Howe, Charleston; and nieces Ann Hodsdon, Hudson, Massachusetts, Cynthia R. Hodsdon, Reading, Pennsylvania; nephew, James P. Hodsdon, of Gloucester, Massachusetts; grandson, Gregory Howe, of Elkton Maryland; two grandnieces and a grandnephew; six great-grandnieces and three great-grandnephews; brother, David M. and his wife, Janette Hodsdon, of Jefferson;

Services at the gravesite in Jefferson will be held in the spring at the convenience of family.

RAYMOND A. LeBRETON

FAIRFIELD – Raymond A. LeBreton, 92, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022. He was born April 1, 1930, in Fairfield, the son of Joseph and Clairis (Wilson) LeBreton.

He worked at Scott Paper Co., in Winslow, for the majority of his life. He loved the outdoors, sitting in the sun and watching his birds. He was an avid bowler for many years at 1-7-10 Bowling Lanes, in Augusta. When he was unable to bowl anymore, he enjoyed going to watch and chatting with his friends.

Raymond is survived by daughters, Brenda Alley, of Fairfield, and Pauline Pomerleau, and husband Steve; granddaughter, Lisa LeBreton and husband Brian; estranged son, Gary LeBreton; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Hazel LeBreton; daughter, Linda O’Neal; and Eugene LeBreton.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023, from noon to 8 p.m., at the MacCrillis-Rousseau VFW Post #8835, 175 Veteran’s Drive, in Winslow.

ERNEST K. DeCOSTA

PALERMO – Ernest Kevin DeCosta, 72, of Palermo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. Kevin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Ernest L. DeCosta and Irene DeFlavis.

Kevin attended Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School and upon graduation served in the United States Marine Corps.

Known as “Ernie” professionally, Ernie retired from Ecolab after 28 years as a service technician. In his retirement Ernie was a driver for Ray Haskell Ford, in Oakland.

Kevin was actively involved in the community, serving as treasurer for American Legion Post #163, in Palermo. Kevin was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley, of Augusta 32-degree. He also served as Tyler and longtime secretary of the Dirigo Masonic Lodge #104, of Weeks Mills.

Kevin was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Aaron.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet; his daughter, Jenna, of Sarasota, Florida; his son, Ernie Jr. and daughter-in-law Jennifer, of China; eight grandchildren. He was “Yaya” to Patrick, Joseph, Rose, Simon, William and Clare, of Venice, Florida, and “Gump” to Landen and Logan, of China; his brother, Chris Logan, of Massachusetts;

No services are planned at this time. The family will have a Celebration of Life at Ernie’s log cabin dream home in the summer.

GERALD J. LANGUET

FAIRFIELD – Gerald “Jerry” James Languet, 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, following a brief illness. Jerry was born in Waterville on May 27, 1934, the son of Irene (Cote) and Albert Languet Sr.

Jerry went to Waterville schools and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married Margaret “Maggie” (Noel) Languet in 1957 and they had eight children.

Jerry was a skilled mason and self-employed owner operator truck driver. His favorite pastimes were watching football, going to his sons’ and grandsons’ football games, and tinkering on cars. Jerry loved listening to Loretta Lynn and Dean Martin and enjoyed singing Dean Martin songs at weddings. He is well-known for running out onto the field of a high school football game and tackling an opposing player to stop a touchdown.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Albert Languet Jr., Laurier Languet, and Marie Sherrell.

JAMES W. BOWMAN

BENTON – James Winfield Bowman, 79, of Benton, died at home Thursday, December 8, 2022, following a recent hospitalization. He was born January 5, 1943, and, after a stay at the Maine’s Children’s Home for Little Wanderers, in Waterville, was raised by his mother Ethel Phyllis (McKenney) Pillsbury and step-father Ralph Benton “Barney” Pillsbury, in Benton, in their home on the River Road. He was educated at Benton Grammar School and graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, class of 1961. He excelled in football and baseball, which he first enjoyed playing with his brothers on the Pillsbury’s Little League team sponsored by his family’s tractor business.

Jim’s early years were notable for travel and adventure. After working in the position of Captain Waiter in the Seattle Space Needle during the 1962 World’s Fair, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at nearby Fort Lewis, Washington. Having tested into the Special Forces, he served in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in the rank of Private First Class. He graduated from the airborne course as a parachutist in 1964. He was married briefly to Roseann Mammoser (Pfiffner), of Minnesota, in 1971, and was a proud father to their son.

He traveled extensively throughout the United States, having worked as a brakeman for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern railways which carried him across the Northwest. He enjoyed sailing in Tampa, Florida, and San Diego, California, as well as gold panning and fly fishing near Boise, Idaho.

Stories have been shared of his travels to the Southwest, Denver, Cocoa Beach and Boston. He went on to earn a degree in Addiction Counseling at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Attending his 25th Lawrence High School reunion, he and classmate Rita Crosby West reunited and were married in 1986. This was to be the love of their lives, enduring until his death. They delighted in the horses, farm animals and pets they kept together at their home in Benton, where he chose a career as a licensed insurance agent until his retirement.

Jim enjoyed gardening, country drives, agricultural fairs, and local and family history. He and Rita attended the Fairfield First Baptist Church. Gifted with a sharp wit, he was well known for his clever way with words. He shared his loves of watching movies and the craft of storytelling with his son, who would go on to become an award-winning film director in New York City. He especially cherished spending time on school holidays and summer visits with his two grandsons.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Rita, now of Gardiner; his brother Robert Pillsbury and wife Kelly, of Benton; sister Mary Lou “Lucille” Ryan and husband Robert, of Graham, North Carolina; sister-in-law Rosemary Pillsbury, of Unity; his son Ben Bowman and grandsons Wyatt and Felix Hand-Bowman, of Minneapolis; Jody West ,of Benton, Donna Young of Athens; Deborah Ford of Massachusetts; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, biological father Winfield Cornelius “Bill” Bowman and his brothers Byron and Richard Pillsbury.

KEITH M. LaPOINTE

SIDNEY – Keith M. LaPointe, 42, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, after losing the fight to a long illness. Keith was born on October 18, 1980, in Dover-Foxcroft.

He attended schools in Sidney and Oakland. Graduating from the New England School of Communication, in Bangor, with an associate degree in communications in 2001.

Keith enjoyed writing creative fiction from an early age. Several novels can be found published under his pen name Soul Tsukino. He was well respected in the anime’ community, running instructional writing panels at local anime conventions; as well as commenting on geek/nerd culture trends and reviews.

Keith was a WWF and WWE Wrestling aficionado. He was an expert at all things wrestling. He loved to share the names and histories of wrestling from the ‘80s to the current day. His all-time favorite wrestler was Rick Flair. Keith’s nickname was “Tough as Nails LaPointe,” and he fought like a champion until the very end.

Keith had a lifelong love for animals, especially cats, and watching wildlife in the backyard. He enjoyed feeding the birds and watching squirrel antics. Keith had a sense of humor and quick wit. He loved a good joke.

Keith is survived by his parents, Arnette and Michael LaPointe, of Sidney; one sister, Brandi Quirk and her husband, Jim, of Hampden; one nephew, Cole LaPointe and his fiancée, Mandy Meade, of Orono; his grandmother, Rachael LaPointe, of Monson; and an aunt, Elly Farrar and her husband Dale, of Morrill; several uncles and cousins. There will be no formal services for Keith.

MANLY L.HILTZ

CHELSEA – Manly L. Hiltz, 87, of Chelsea, died peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2022. He was known as Red, Pat, and Old Grampy. He was born on August 26, 1935, to Frank and Goldie (Plummer) Hiltz.

He was a lifelong resident of Chelsea. He attended Chelsea School and graduated from Cony High School, in Augusta.

He was married to Joan (Mason) Hiltz in 1954 until her death in 2011.

He worked for local area companies as a truck driver and retired to Ocala, Florida, for winter until Joan’s passing. He was an avid outdoorsman and instilled a love of hunting and fishing into his descendants. He loved his country, served in the National Guard, enjoyed playing guitar in the Carole Bailey String Band, and was a faithful member of Farmer Church.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife Joan; siblings; and great-granddaughter Grace Labbe.

Old Grampy will be greatly missed by his four children: Manly Hiltz, Jr. (Wendy), William Hiltz (Jayne), Jill Labbe (Jim), and Susan Hiltz Massey; eight grandchildren: Jim Labbe, Jr (Whitney), Jasmine Dupont (Jason), Jessica Labbe, Charity True (Jake), Jeremy Hiltz (Suzanne), Nick Kelley (Megan), Nastasha Massey, Jonathan Hiltz (Amber); 16 great-grandchildren, Nickolas, Matthew, Benjamin, Mason, Jonah, Zechariah, Samson, Thomas, Lilianna, Gabriella, Braelynn, Kevin, Kaylee, Azariah, Silas, and Phoebe; cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life in the spring.

BETTY F. SMITH

SIDNEY – Betty Florence (Freeman) Smith, 92, of Sidney, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022, following a brief illness. She was born during a blizzard in Oakland, on January 11, 1930, the daughter of Martin Lloyd Freeman and Vera Arlene (Tillson).

Betty graduated from Cony High School, in Augusta, in 1949, and married her high school sweetheart, Curtis Arnold Smith, on November 4, 1950.

Betty was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. Family meant everything to her and she always put them first. She enjoyed time spent with Curt and the kids at camp on Lake Moxie and numerous family gatherings and celebrations. S

he had a strong interest in genealogy, taking pictures throughout the years and enjoyed scrapbooking. Her interests included flower gardening, quilting, coloring, and writing poems. In the 1970s she worked as a bookkeeper with her husband at West Sidney Garage, retiring in 2002.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Curtis Sr.; son Curtis “Skip” Smith, Jr.; granddaughter, Devon Smith; parents Martin Freeman and Vera Leavitt; step-parents, Martha Grace (Grindle) Freeman and George Leavitt, Sr.; sisters Beverly (Richard) Smith and Barbara (Raymond) Colwill; brothers George Leavitt, Jr. and Jackie (Michela) Leavitt; and in-laws Henry and Mary Smith.

She is survived by daughters Linda and Carol Smith, of Sidney, Barbara (Smith) Tobey and former husband, Robin, of South China, and their children Ethan, Nolan and Deidre (Christopher); daughter-in-law Mary Smith, of Sidney, and children Laurie (Kerry), Carrie, Jamie (Kevin), and Jeremy (Jaimie); sons Donald and wife, Doreen, of Sidney, and their children Jonathan (Heather), Christina (Shawn), and Justin (Jess); Ronald and wife, Julie, of Rome and their children Jessica (Seth), Amanda (Ben), Renee (Chet), Desiree, and Cassandra (Patrick); Andrew and wife, Lisa, of Sidney, and their children Alyssa and Emily; and Dixon and wife, Laurie, of Sidney, and their children Shane (Krista), Jaclyn (Ben), Kyle, Dominic, and Miranda (Chris); 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

DENIS M. RIOUX

WINSLOW – Denis M. Rioux, 70, of Winslow, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 11, 2022. He was born in Jackman, on July 20, 1952, son of Henri and Hélène (Bernier) Rioux.

He attended St. Anthony School, in Jackman, Mount Assumption High School, in Plattsburg, New York, and graduated from St. Francis College, in Biddeford, in 1974. He played football and ran track.

He worked as a UPS driver for 25 years until his retirement. He was a union steward for many of those years traveling many evenings and weekends performing union tasks.

Denis always enjoyed football, skiing, and the outdoors. He would feed the birds and squirrels that came to the tree at the front of his home. He had an enormous amount of compassion and sensitivity. He gave generously to many charities.

He was predeceased by his parents, aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his brother Marcel Rioux; his sister Marie-Line Rioux, CSJ; a cousin Monique (Henry), and cousin Gerald, as well as an extended family of cousins.

A celebration of Denis’ life was held at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 116 Silver Street, Waterville, on Tuesday, December 20.
