She was able to minister to hundreds of children over the years, teaching them the fundamentals of the Christian faith, but she also was adept at discipling adults and inspiring them to seek greater spiritual maturity in their lives.

Throughout all of her roles of service over the years, Melissa’s life was marked by her humble, gracious way of giving to others, always focusing on their needs over her own. One of Melissa’s great passions for over 15 years was serving during the summers at the Girls Camp, at Farmington. She served in many positions over the years, eventually as a co-director of the camp. At camp, she was able to influence an entire generation of young women, encouraging them to grow in their Christian faith while also enjoying a fun-filled week of camp activities such as archery, swimming and kayaking, as well as arts and crafts and personal worship times. And, of course, she got to teach the girls a lot of silly camp songs and perform in crazy skits. The enduring camaraderie between both campers and staff was a major source of pleasure in Melissa’s life.

In her personal life Melissa enjoyed many pursuits, including baking and cooking, gardening, kayaking, hiking and camping among other interests. She was a capable artist working in several media over the years, and she enjoyed blessing her friends and family with the fruits of her creations and especially with the gift of her time. Her greatest passion, however, always was serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She studied the Bible diligently and continually sought to apply its truths in her life on a daily basis. She always would be the first to admit that she was not perfect and was ever in need of a loving savior, but she never ceased trying to become as Christ-like as possible in her attitudes and actions. She lived her life as simply as she could, without putting on airs or seeking wealth or power, and she sought to live her life “deeply and meaningfully” by pursuing personal holiness in every aspect of her life.

Melissa is survived by her husband Todd Miller, of Rome; a son Ethan and a daughter Lydia, also of Rome; her father Leo ‘Butch’ Rodgers, of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania; her brother Keith Rodgers and his family of Barnesville, Pennsylvania; as well as numerous other relatives in Pennsylvania and Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her mother Suzanne Schock Rodgers, her grandparents Peter and Ella Rodgers, and Elmer and Rita Schock, all of Barnesville, Pennsylvania; as well as numerous other relatives.

Arrangements are under Veilleux and Redington Funeral Home, 8 ELm St., Waterville. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.VeilleuxFuneralHome.com for the Miller family.

The family suggests that donations in honor of Melissa may be directed to:

RONALD M. LeCLAIR

WINSLOW – Ronald M. LeClair, 64, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, following a battle with cancer. Ron was born in Waterville to Robert and Noella (Gilbert) LeClair, in August 1958, just minutes before his identical twin brother, Don.

He attended Winslow area schools, where he and Don were known for their twin hijinks. Ron married JoAnn, his wife of nearly 36 years, in December 1986. They had their only son, Brandon, in 1989.

After spending time in the restaurant business, Ron began a career in sales under the guidance of his longtime mentor, Walter Simcock, at Colonial Distributors, in Waterville. Ever the consummate salesman, he built an impressive resume with Pine State Trading, in Augusta, Northeast Coffee, in Skowhegan, and finally, Levesque Pools, in Fairfield. Over the last several years, he owned and operated Limo Services ME, providing luxury transportation to a host of clients, notably Colby College, with whom he developed a wonderful working relationship.

His true passion, though, was community service. Ron served as chairman of the Winslow Family 4th of July Celebration for 15 years, cultivating one of the largest parades and fireworks displays in the state of Maine until his retirement from the committee in 2010. Many around town would affectionately call him “Mr. 4th of July,” or “Mr. Mayor”, titles he was not-so-secretly proud to wear.

Ron was predeceased by his parents Robert and Noella; and brothers John and Paul.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn; son Brandon; identical twin brother Don (Dametri); brothers Luxy (Marie), Tony, Peter (Karen); sisters Susan and Rose; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to remember and celebrate Ron as the life of every party, get together, and occasion. He was full of life and vigor – a tirelessly hard worker who possessed an inexplicable amount of energy, unmatched by all who tried to keep up. He was fiercely proud of his and JoAnn’s property, particularly his landscaping and his “beautiful backyahd.” He’d show off his flowers to family, friends, and strangers alike. Ron made sure that no one ever left the house hungry, or thirsty – try as you might to resist his offers. His spirit was infectious and welcoming to all.

At his request, no formal funeral will be held. The family invites all to celebrate Ron on Saturday, November 12, at the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center, at Colby College, Mayflower Hill Drive, Waterville, from 1 – 3 p.m.

Arrangements are in the care of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield where memories may be shared, and an online register book signed by visiting http://www.lawrybrothers.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to: the Make-A-Wish foundation of Maine, with whom Ron was a proud transportation partner.

RICHARD W. DAMREN JR.

BELGRADE – Richard W. Damren Jr., 66, known to most as “Rick”, passed away after a three-year battle with pulmonary hypertension on Friday, October 28, 2022. Rick was born on December 29, 1955, a son to Richard W. Damren Sr. and Mayna Damren.

Rick spent most of his life dedicated to the citizens of Belgrade, whether it was being a lifelong member of the Belgrade Fire Department, a school bus driver, or serving as a frugal Selectman for the Town of Belgrade.

Later in Rick’s life, he and Tammy Damren raised three boys, Conrad Shaw, Jeremy Damren and his partner Thomas Stinson, and Scott Damren and his wife Kate Damren, all from Belgrade. All three boys grew up in the passenger seat of his pick-up truck, whether going to fire and rescue calls, plowing snowy roads and driveways with him after winter storms, or riding with him around the state fixing everything from tractors, lawn mowers, and chainsaws. Rick also had much love and fondness for his niece, Desiree Damren. Rick also had several four-legged grandsons that he was very proud of.

Rick served on the Belgrade Fire Department since his teenage years, serving as chief from 1987-2000. Public service became a strong family tradition as his three sons are also dedicated members of the fire department. Amongst many other accomplishments, one of his most proud was working alongside his Deputy Chief Bill Pulsifer, as they brought the Belgrade Lakes Fire Department, the Belgrade Depot Fire Department and the North Belgrade Fire Department to what is it known today, a whole entity, the Belgrade Fire Department. During his time on the department, there were very few fire or rescue calls that he missed. Rick was also a member of the Oakland Fire Department for many years.

Among other things such as his snow plowing and firewood businesses, Rick spent many years as a school bus driver, becoming a father figure to many of the children. Rick also spent many years on the Town of Belgrade’s Selectboard. There was never a doubt that people didn’t know his position on town matters, always keeping a careful eye on his taxpayers’ dollars. Most currently, Rick helped manage his sister Judy and predeceased brother-in-law’s company, Dave Hallowell Construction. Rick leaves behind an incredible legacy of being a loving father, an extremely hard worker, and great man many could count on.
Prior to Rick’s passing, the Belgrade Fire Department voted to dedicate the North Belgrade Fire Station in his honor. A dedication and memorial will be held later.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Belgrade Fire and Rescue Association, P.O. Box 404, Belgrade, ME 04917, which will make it possible to purchase lifesaving equipment for the citizens of Belgrade.

DANIEL C. QUIRION

WINSLOW – Daniel Charles Quirion of Winslow, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022, following a long and valiant fight with medical health challenges.

Dan was born in Waterville, but was raised as a Winslow Black Raider. Dan was the son of Joseph George Quirion and Mary Jane Butler.

Dan graduated from Winslow High School in 1971 where he lit up the basketball court with his deep corner shots. He attended American International College and later transferred to the University of Maine where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Dan worked at the Waterville Boys and Girls Club and went on to serve for over 30 years at Riverview Psychiatric Hospital. He also served as an assistant basketball coach for the University of Maine at Augusta, Thomas College, and Colby College, both in Waterville. During retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher. Dan often voiced how it was an honor meeting and working with many courageous people over the years.

Family was at the core of who Dan was as a man. He met the love of his life, Kimberly Kittredge, at the age of 13. Kim and Dan were married for 49 years. Dan had been a tough young man with some life battle scars at an early age. Kimberly saw his caring and loyal soul, and they shared a beautiful love story that is now the foundation of new generations. Dan’s most cherished roles were as husband, father, and grandfather. There was no other place he would rather be than watching his children and grandchildren do what they love; they were his pride and joy.

Dan had the heart of a champion. He was a fierce competitor who encouraged himself and those around him to strive for excellence. Dan was both a player and a coach, and (if you were lucky enough to be in his inner circle) he was one of your biggest supporters in pursuit of your dreams.

Dan loved new adventures. Dan was a beautiful blend of opposites: he was tough as nails and yet unapologetically sentimental; he was a straight shooter, a no non-sense sort of man who also had tremendous capacity for tenderness and a depth of love that is rare. Dan had both a warrior spirit and a gentleman’s heart.

Dan was predeceased by his parents Joseph Quirion and Mary Jane Butler; brother-in-law Lieutenant Colonel John Story, and his sister-in-law Gayla Cassidy.

Dan is survived by his wife Kimberly Quirion (Kittredge); daughter Amie Lyn Hasham; son Nathan Daniel Quirion; grandchildren Savannah and Malik Hasham and Dean and Brynn Quirion; sisters Gene Bard and Bernadette Phair; son-in-law Dr. Muneer Hasham; daughter-in-law Nicole Quirion; sisters-in-laws Colleen Story and Kathy Drouin; brothers-in-law Conrad Bard, David Phair, Paul Drouin, Mike Cassidy and Roger Gagnon; and nieces and nephews Jeff, Cammie, Chad, Roxie, Shelley, Mariann, Angela, Matthew, and Mariah; his great-nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Saturday November 26, 2022, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, located at 107 Main St., in Fairfield, with readings and stories of remembrance beginning at 2 p.m.

RICHARD MEADER

WATERVILLE – Richard “Dick” Meader, 76, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

The son of Arlene and Everett Meader, Dick was raised on a farm in Solon, where he and brother, Bob were legendary Solon High School basketball and baseball players for Coach Ray Leary. Dick is proof that coming from a small town can lead to a successful and rewarding career. His dream of becoming a coach came true.

When Dick arrived at Farmington State Teachers College in 1964, he soon became one of the top college players in Maine under Coach Len MacPhee. His ball-handling and passing skills filled the bleachers at Dearborn Gymnasium. From scoring 40 points and making 19 consecutive free throws in one game to receiving the most votes for the inaugural Maine small college basketball team, he had an impressive career. Perhaps his crowning moment was when Celtics Hall of Famer John Havlicek leaped to his feet in amazement at one of Dick’s plays in the Boston Garden his senior year.

In baseball, Dick led the Farmington State College team in hitting as a senior and received the MVP Award under Coach Roger Wing. He graduated as all-time stolen base leader.

Following graduation in 1968, Dick married college classmate Betty-Jane Stanhope, from Dover-Foxcroft, and began his coaching career as the freshman basketball coach at Nokomis High School, in Newport, where they became best friends with Sue (Greenleaf) and Jim Flynn, now of Monson, during the summer months. In 1970, he served as the University of Maine at Orono graduate assistant under Coach Skip Chappelle while earning his master’s degree.

From 1971 to 1988, Dick was the Thomas College men’s basketball coach, in Waterville, and from 1972 to 1990, he was the director of athletics. Dick coached his brother, Don, in basketball for four years and his brother, Bruce, in baseball for two years. While at Thomas, he co-founded the Pine Tree Basketball Camp with Dick Whitmore in 1973; the camp involved over 37,000 players and 6,000 coaches in 38 years.

After a short hiatus in order to watch his sons’ Waterville High School games, Dick returned to his alma mater to coach basketball and baseball and later coached his two sons, Lance and Daren. At the University of Maine at Farmington, he took pride in recruiting and coaching predominantly Maine players; many of them, like himself, were from small towns. Coach Meader was also proud of the number of his former players who joined the coaching ranks.

Over Dick’s 44-year career as a head college coach, he led his basketball teams to 513 wins and received 16 Coach-of-the Year awards. He was inducted into five athletics halls of fame: 1994 Thomas College Sports Hall of Fame, 1995 University of Maine at Farmington Athletics Hall of Fame, 2015 New England Basketball Hall of Fame; 2015 Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, and 2018 Maine Sports Hall of Fame. In 2020, he received the National Association of Basketball Coaches Outstanding Service Award. That year, the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame Room was to be named after him. The night following Dick’s stroke, Thomas College planned to dedicate the Athletics Hall of Fame digital wall in the new Sukeforth Family Sports Center to Dick and his wife, who taught at Thomas College for 41 years.

When Dick’s Parkinson’s disease became progressive, he retired in 2020. Thanks to the assistance of Jamie Beaudoin, his former UMF player, a previous UMF women’s basketball and men’s soccer coach, and now director of athletics, Dick was able to coach until the pandemic began.

Dick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty-Jane Meader; his sons Lance and his wife, Amy, of Falmouth and Daren and his wife, Jennifer, of Gorham; his grandchildren Jace, Jaelyn, Drew, and Bode Meader; his step-grandchildren Jackson, Georgia, Griffin, and Hudson Banks; brothers Bob and his wife, Pam, of Portland, Bruce and his husband, Joe DiLorenzo, of Saco, and Don and his wife, Melissa, of Oakland; aunt, Beverly Shaughnessy, of Skowhegan; Norma Gorham, of Saco; sister-in-law, Nancy Smith and her husband, Steve, of Stonington, and Port St. Lucie; brother-in-law, James Stanhope and his wife, Laney, of Tampa, Florida, and Winslow; brother-in-law, Robert Stanhope and his wife, Fran, of Raymond; and several nieces and nephews and their children.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m., in the University of Maine at Farmington Dearborn Gymnasium, on 163 High St. Doors will open at 1 p.m. This event will be live streamed as well; go to umfbeavers.com for updated information. JO ANN NIVISON

WINSLOW – Jo Ann (Williams) Nivison, 87, of Winslow, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. She was born the fifth of seven children (and the only daughter) to the late Guy J. and Pauline (Deschesne) Williams on March 21, 1935, in Fort Fairfield.

Jo Ann and her family withstood the hardscrabble years of the Great Depression through the support of two pillars, their Catholic faith, and their large, extended family. When tuberculosis took the life of Guy Williams in 1940, the family leaned on these pillars. And when the economic prospects of the area turned following the World War II, threatening to break the family up, Pauline Willams moved her family to Waterville, where a cousin had lined up a job that would permit her to support her children. Jo Ann would learn well from her mother’s example of resilience and grace.

Jo Ann entered Waterville schools, graduating from Waterville High School in 1953. Around that time, through mutual friends, she met Jack Nivison. Married at Sacred Heart Church, in Waterville, on June 22, 1957, they lived for a time in Waterville before moving into the Nivison family home at 4 Bowden Street, Winslow, in 1963. There they forged a partnership for the ages, raising seven children, hosting countless holidays and celebrations, and providing a true homestead for their children and grandchildren for more than half a century.

Jo Ann was active in the life of St. John the Baptist Parish and School, in Winslow, where her children matriculated. She served on the school board and was a founding chairman of the St. John Christmas Fair. After a time, when her children reached school-age, she became the childcare provider for a generation of young children of Winslow area teachers, providing a warm environment filled with play, creativity, and lots of cookies.

In 1980, she began work as a teller at Waterville Savings Bank, starting a 17-year career that would see her rise to the position of head teller. Ever the caregiver, she took in her mother for several years following a series of medical setbacks, until her needs demanded more regular care. Following her retirement, with customary determination, focus, and joy, Jo Ann took up the game of golf, becoming a member of the Waterville Country Club and a regular player in its Ladies’ Day outings. In her retirement, she also served on the Board of the Winslow Community Federal Credit Union.

Blessed with boundless energy and optimism, she was unsparing in her love and generosity toward her grandchildren. Nowhere was this more true than in “Nannie’s kitchen,” where batch after batch of meals, snacks, and baked goods of all varieties were always at the ready as children of all ages and appetites breezed through the homestead.

In her final years, Jo Ann settled into a routine of family visits and walks around the grounds of Winslow’s schools and athletic fields with Jack. Fixtures at Winslow sporting events and eager for a conversation wherever they went, they were rarely without a story to tell or a smile to give. As Jo Ann began to suffer the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Jack embraced the role of primary caregiver with selfless charity, ensuring her health, safety, and comfort until her passing. They possessed a matchless devotion to each other throughout their marriage.

Jo Ann was predeceased by her brothers Reginald, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Richard, of Manassas, Virginia, Paul, of Rocky River, Ohio, and Guy (Joseph), of Skowhegan.

Along with her husband Jack, she is survived by her children and their spouses, Jane and Dean Quirion, of Winslow, John and Wendy Nivison, of Winslow, Margaret and Thomas Baker, of Keene, New Hampshire, Marsha and Paul Pelletier, of Williamsburg, Virginia, David and Asha Nivison, of Madison, Tennessee, Mary Beth and Jim Bourgoin, of Winslow, and Kenneth and Kristen Nivison, of Pembroke, New Hampshire; 18 grandchildren, Kevin Quirion, of Sidney, Kristina Boudreau and her husband Joe, of Lisbon, Lauren Nivison, of Falmouth, Jack Nivison, of Newbury, Massachusetts, Colby Baker, of Manchester, New Hampshire, Hillary Van Clief and her husband Dan, of Saco, Paul Pelletier and his wife Jessica, of Matthews, North Carolina, Alex Pelletier, of Williamsburg, Virginia, Patrick Pelletier and his wife Ashley, of Roanoke, Virginia, Benjamin Pelletier and his wife Jessica, of Union Bridge, Maryland, Austin Nivison and his wife Alli, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Hannah Scott and her husband Ryan, of Greenbrier, Tennessee, Olivia Nivison, of Madison, Tennessee, Sonali Hajari, of Madison, Tennessee, Conner Bourgoin, of Waltham, Massachusetts, Jo Ann Bourgoin, of Portland, Campbell Nivison, and Caroline Nivison, both of Pembroke, New Hampshire; ten (soon to be 12) great-grandchildren; her brothers, Melvin Williams, of Oakland, and Earl Williams and his wife Jane, of Nashua, New Hampshire; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Nivison, of South China; her sister-in-law, Nancy Nivison Soper and her husband Robert, of Martinsville, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 9 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 26 Monument St., in Winslow, followed by a celebration of Jo Ann’s life in the Parker Reed Room, at the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center, Colby College.

JANE M. DORNISH

WINSLOW – Jane Millett Dornish, 89, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Jane was born in Waterville on August 28, 1933, to E.W. “Bill” and Mary (Rollins) Millett.

She grew up in Waterville and spent summers at Rollinsville, at China Lake, with her extended family. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1951 and from Colby College, in Waterville, in 1955.

Jane met the love of her life, Karl, at Colby and they married on a very hot day shortly after her graduation. They moved to Gorham where they raised their three daughters together, Deborah, Katherine, and Martha. In 1985, after a few years in Muskegon, Michigan, Jane and Karl moved back to Maine and lived in Winslow.

Jane and Karl had many adventures together with their family and with dear friends. They traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe, canoed many a river, skied a few mountains, and climbed a lot more. Jane and Karl always enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and the morning word jumble in the newspaper, and still balanced their checkbook together. They celebrated their 67th anniversary in June of this year.

Colby College played an important role throughout Jane’s life, starting from childhood when she was a “rink rat” during her father’s time as hockey coach, continuing through her own student days, then happily visiting daughter Kathy when she was a student there. Once she and Karl moved back to the area in 1985, they were enthusiastic and frequent supporters of Colby arts and athletics. The college recognized her commitment and support by awarding her a Colby Brick and the Marriner Award.

A dear and caring friend to many, Jane made a point of remembering birthdays and anniversaries. She loved to entertain and has notebooks filled with menus and guest lists from many occasions. She loved to bake, and reading cookbooks was a favorite pastime. She played the piano, loved getting together with her epicurious book clubbers and was a lifelong knitter as she couldn’t just sit, she had to be producing something.

Jane was an amazing mother to their three daughters, Debbie, Kathy, and Martha, and stayed in close touch with them and their children. Her grandchildren only know they “go to Maine” for Christmas and did it for 32 years. She worked from sun-up to bedtime caring for her family and for others. Jane was generous with her love to all, in word and deed.

Jane will be sorely missed for her impressive warmth and hospitality, generous and humorous spirit along with an exceptional desire to ensure all who entered her home were made to feel special. In her honor, please do something kind for someone.

She precedes Karl in death and is survived by children Debbie, of Waterville, Kathy and Robert, of Vermont, and Martha and Paul, of Virginia; her grandchildren, Luc, in Colorado, Rachel and husband Stephen with great-grandchildren Jack and Oliver, in Virginia, Jonathan and wife Maya, in Biddeford, Regina, in Washington, DC, and Isabel, in Virginia.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 6, 2022, at 2 p.m., in the Lorimer Chapel, at Colby College, with a reception following in Page Commons.

Arrangements are in the care of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, where memories may be shared, and an online register book signed by visiting http://www.lawrybrothers.com.

PHILIP L. ALEXANDER SR.

CHELSEA – Philip Lincoln Alexander Sr., 94, of Chelsea, died Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at his home. Philip was born a twin in a Dresden farmhouse on January 23, 1928, to Leonard E. F. and Nettie (Call) Alexander.

With neither twin expected to live, their mother was advised by the doctor not to bother to name them; but God had other plans for these two boys. They were so small that she placed them together in a shoe box and put them near the wood stove to keep them warm. Philip and Alan both survived and were two of the four boys born to Leonard and Nettie.

Philip graduated from Bridge Academy in June 1947 and then went to work for J. F. Hodgkins as a machinist. He worked there for over six years before going to work for Central Maine Power Company in mid April 1954 as a lineman.

During this same time he was also a member of the Maine National Guard, in Gardiner. He joined the Guard early in 1948 and remained a member for nearly 15 years, moving up through the enlisted ranks. Early in 1957 he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was subsequently promoted to first lieutenant; the grade he held until his resignation in 1962.

On May 19, 1951, Philip and Doris Blodgett were married at Christ Church Episcopal, in Gardiner. For a short time they resided in Pittston, which is where Doris was born and raised. In the late winter of 1956, they bought the Mason farm property on Route 9, in Chelsea. By April, construction of the new home had started. With the help of family and friends they were able to move in by February of 1957.

In September of that same year, their first daughter, Marion, was born. Four years later a second daughter, Nettie-Mae, was born. Their last child, a son, Philip Jr., was born five years later in 1966.

During the time that the children were growing up, Philip was active in town affairs, serving on both the school board and the budget committee. He took courses to become a certified electronics technician, getting his diploma in October 1961. He remained an active member of the Maine Electronics Association until 1978. During this time he enjoyed repairing radios and televisions and even did some of the more extensive repair work for the Frank X. Pomerleau furniture store, in Augusta. He continued his work at CMP, eventually transferring from the line department to the Computer Center as a computer operator. He retired from there on June 30, 1991, bringing his total service to 37 years. After his retirement he taught adult ed machine tool at VoTech for several semesters.

The important things to Phil were God, family and the farm. Being a man of strong faith, he was an active member of the Randolph United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He taught Sunday school, served on many committees, and was lay leader for much of that time. There was an open door policy at Phil and Doris’s where everyone was always welcome. For many of their nieces and nephews it was a second home. He took great pride in maintaining the property and for years mowed his acres of hayfield with the old farm tractor, a job he estimated took him about 40 hours to complete. He enjoyed growing his own vegetables and each summer maintained an impeccable, weed free garden. He once joked that after retirement he didn’t get any vacation or holidays off anymore.

Phil always said, ‘I try to live my life the way God wants me to’, and right up until the day before he died, he told us to ‘just do the best you can’, all words that he lived by. Indeed, we are all better people for having known such a great man.

Phil is survived by his daughters Marion and Nettie-Mae, and son, Philip Jr., all of Chelsea; his sisters-in-law, Edith Alexander, of Monmouth, Marjorie Alexander, of Hallowell, Norma (Tootie) Blodgett, of Pittston, Deidre Blodgett, of Sebring, Florida. and Marie Bronn, of Chelsea; many nieces, nephews.

At Philip’s request there will be no visitation or services. Burial will be at the family cemetery in Chelsea.

Arrangements are entrusted with Staple’s Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, October 20, 2022

KENNETH M. DOUIN

SIDNEY –Kenneth M. Douin, 69, of Augusta and Sidney, died on Thursday, September 15, 2022, following a brave struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on December 27, 1952, in Augusta, the son of Benoit and Cecile Douin.

He was educated in Augusta schools and graduated from Cony High School.

Ken spoke of his parents with love and gratitude saying he would never change anything about his childhood. He was brought up to contribute, to work hard, and appreciate life. At nine years old, he worked delivering milk and shared a massive paper route with his brother. He helped his father maintain the family garden. Ken worked alongside his parents on their home and apartments on Penobscot Street. Small in stature, Ken was mighty in spirit and determination.

Trying to find his way, Ken worked at 15 years old for the city of Augusta mowing the grass at city cemeteries. Ken was shy and never wanted to draw attention. He loved to tell the story of falling through a grave and coffin at the back of the cemetery. Seeing a skeleton, feeling scared and embarrassed, he ran a fast as he could to the sidewalk causing great laughter among coworkers. Feather white and shaking, Ken walked home early that day.

Ken began to realize he had some skill working with his hands. He worked for McKee Construction, meeting on the job, a wonderful master carpenter and mentor, Delbert Plaisted. They became fast friends, continuing with their friendship until Del’s death in 2019. Ken built Del’s last home in Belgrade. During Ken’s employment, he began working “side jobs”. He used this experience to develop his own building and remodeling business. His work was solid, creative, and beautiful. Ken’s last employment was with the YMCA in Manchester.

During his business days, he hired an old friend, Richard Dudley and nephews Scott and Jason Douin. This crew was filled with singing, bad jokes, and made up lyrics to hymns. “Drop kick me Jesus through the goalpost of life,” a group favorite.

Capable of great love and tenderness, Ken cared deeply for his sweetheart, Louise Earle. Her son, Jay Barrett and his daughter Natalea, were part of his heart. Natalea was his granddaughter. His “chickadee”. His partner on the four-wheeler and in the pool.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Irene, who died some time ago. Ken mourned her passing for the rest of his life.

Ken is survived by siblings, Dom, of Augusta and Jackie, of Vassalboro, and nephews Scott and Jason Douin and C. J. Roy; a niece Danielle Sirois and her son; his partner, Louise Earle.

No services are planned at this time.

APRIL J. NORED

CHINA – April Jane (Spencer) Nored, 56, of China, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022, following a brave and fierce fight against aggressive late-stage cancer this year.

April grew up the second of five children in Chelsea. April’s sense of humor and quick wit were evident even as a little girl. She had a laugh that made you laugh along with her even if you didn’t hear the punchline. Her beauty was ageless and still got her carded when she picked up a box of her favorite Pinot Grigio. You could find her offering interior design advice to friends and family, helping clients find their dream homes across Maine, hanging out on China Lake with her husband Eric, or teaching her deaf dog sign language. Yes, really.

Her children were her greatest source of pride and happiness. She always supported and celebrated anything they wanted to pursue and would do anything to help them achieve it. Her only rules were to take no crap from anyone and let her know when they got home safe.

As her kids grew up and got married, April wanted nothing more than to be a grandmother. April got her wish this year, welcoming her grandson Jack Nicholas Kevin in June and granddaughter Clara April just three weeks before she passed. One day when they are old enough Jack and Clara will learn just how hard their “Glamma” fought to meet them and hold them in her arms. Her grandchildren kept her going through the darkest and most challenging days of her illness.

April is survived by her husband Eric Nored; children Kylie Low, Nicholas Keene, Hanna Hickey and their spouses; stepson Myles Nored; grandchildren Jack and Clara; parents Dick and Jane Condon; siblings Angela Lyon, Dick Condon, Roxanne Condon, and Roberta DuPont; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

CLINTON – Donald I. Dickey, 96, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022, in Portland. He was born in Fairfield on July 20, 1926, to Everett and Beatrice (Webb) Dickey.

Donald graduated from Clinton High School at 16 and was hired at Maine Central Railroad, Waterville Shop, as an electrician apprentice, commencing a career that would span four decades, culminating with his position at retirement as Superintendent of Motive Power. Having listened on the radio to the news of the Pearl Harbor attack, he and his brothers all later joined the service – Everett (Army) and Donald (Navy) in World War II, and Ralph (Army), in the Korean Conflict. Donald was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam – CV-36, in the Pacific Theater, traveling to Pearl Harbor, the Pacific Islands, Japan, and China.

Upon discharge he married his sweetheart Shirley on August 15, 1948. They raised their family in Clinton during the school year and in a log cabin camp he and his brother-in-law Charlie helped build, in Oakland, on Messalonskee Lake. Donald also built their Clinton home. Over the years he was a member and lay leader of the Clinton United Methodist Church, the Sebasticook Masonic Lodge #146, and last of the charter members of the Clinton Legion Post #186.

He continued his railroad career while taking Colby College night courses, in Waterville.

Upon retirement he and his wife retired to Lady Lake, Florida, for the winter and enjoyed their summers in Maine. He had volunteered with the church, the Scouts, the Clinton Historical Society, and Habitat for Humanity. He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the world spending part of their time in Stratford-Upon-Avon not realizing until into his 90s that his ninth grandparents, the Webbs and the Ardens, were also William Shakespeare’s grandparents. He was an avid reader, particularly of history.

He brought his family to many historical sites including the former locations of Maine’s narrow gauge railroad routes. He loved Moxie and sports, especially baseball and basketball and followed the Detroit Tigers since they won the 1934 World Series when he first began listening to games. The Red Sox were a close second. He played sports in school and remembered all the players and coaches. He retained over 56 years of journals that contained world, national, state, and local events.

It was during those years Donald became skilled in being able to make nearly anything out of wood or metal and fix anything that needed repair. His restoration of a Model A truck he rarely drove was a decades long pursuit to find parts.

At all his homes he had a complete shop where he spent many happy hours tinkering and, while living in Florida, he built a shop and gazebo. He was interested in current events, stayed up-to-date, and enjoyed long talks. His advice to his children was, “Always be the engine and not the caboose.” He wanted his children to think for themselves rather than “following the crowd”.

WINSLOW – Leonard Douglas Poulin, Sr., 81, passed away in his workshop on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. Leonard was born on December 15, 1940, and lived in Winslow his entire life.

He graduated from Winslow High School in 1959 and married Yvette Lachance, his high school sweetheart, on September 2, 1963. They had just celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Doug and Yvette were lifelong parishioners and generous supporters of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Winslow.

After high school, Doug joined the Air National Guard Reserve, serving for six years and graduated from Maine Vocational Technical Institute with a degree in building construction. In his early 20s he began his career with the Maine Department of Transportation where he worked as a civil engineer and superintendent until his retirement. He worked on and supervised many road and bridge projects throughout his career, notably the creation of portions of Maine Interstate-95 and the Donald Carter Memorial Bridge, connecting Waterville and Winslow. His years of career experience allowed him to sit and pass the State of Maine Professional Engineer License Exam in 1993.

Doug and Yvette were real estate investors right from the beginning of their marriage. They built their home on Marie Street, in Winslow, and went on to own and operate over 40 rental units in addition to having full-time careers and two children.

After retirement, Doug could be found at his 300-acre woodlot where he and his brother, Mike, spent countless hours harvesting, cutting and splitting firewood that he shared with his family to heat their homes. At the same time, his woodlot served as a multi-use recreation area for his family where they all enjoyed the miles of trails he built throughout to camp, hunt, walk, snowshoe and enjoy nature. He and Yvette loved 4-wheeling to their favorite spot by the brook to picnic or just sit and enjoy its quietude.

His greatest satisfaction in life came from spending time with his extended family and many friends. His daily schedule revolved around his “meetings” at The 107, McDonalds, and his shop solving all the town and world problems. He continued to keep in touch with co-workers and friends from the Maine DOT and from his high school class. He particularly loved seeing his children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter and all their cousins and friends swimming in the backyard pool that he worked so hard to maintain every summer since 1974.

For many years after retirement, he could be found in his garage “man cave” reading, watching television, and welcoming his many visitors. He always had special treats ready for both visiting children and pets. He was a “demon” at playing cribbage and did it every Wednesday for years with his brother, Mike, a game he first learned to enjoy as a lifelong member of the Waterville Elks Lodge.

He was a generous father, neighbor and friend always anticipating our needs and making sure they were met or would lend a hand. During winter snowstorms, after plowing all his family’s driveways, if he saw that town plows had blocked the end of his neighbors’ driveways, he would always be sure plow those, too.

Leonard was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Noel Laurier Poulin and Yvette Ferland Poulin.

He is survived by his wife Yvette (Lachance) Poulin; his children Leonard Poulin, Jr. and partner Laurie Allen; his daughter Leslie Wilson and husband Ian; grandchildren Joshua, Jorja, and Liam Poulin; great-granddaughter Harper Poulin; his brothers and their wives, Warren and Patricia Poulin, Michael and Madeline Poulin, and Tom and Roberta Poulin; and his sisters-in-law Lucille Roy and Juliette Akins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow, with a Celebration of Life at the Waterville Elks Lodge immediately following.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Veilleux and Redington Funeral Home.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.VeilleuxFuneralHome.com for the Poulin family.

RODNEY E. THERIAULT

WATERVILLE – Rodney Eugene Theriault, 56, passed awayFriday, September 16, 2022, at the Pines unit of Graybirch Longterm Care facility, in Augusta, from complications due to diabetes.

Rodney was born in Waterville on December 13, 1965, the youngest son of Larry and Colette Theriault, and lived at the Theriault home on Summer Street until his health forced him to move to Graybirch in 2020.

Rodney was a plumber and heating technician most of his adult life, working for many different companies, but he was most proud that he was a self-employed technician, operating Rodney’s Oil Burner Service for several years. He had a growing clientele of friends, family, and many loyal customers that he accrued over his career. Some gave him honey and other goodies because of his friendly and dependable service.

Rodney was a huge New England sports fan, especially when it came to the Red Sox, Patriots and especially the Bruins. He spent many hours in the off-season watching Bruins classic games and reruns. He had a Bergeron jersey hanging in his living room year-round so that it was there when there was a Bruins game on TV. He also enjoyed watching the classic shows like Hogan’s Heroes and John Wayne movies, but sports were his true love.

Rodney was an avid painter, with much of his work hanging around the Pines halls and family rooms. Rodney was a self-taught artist. He learned by watching many hours of Bob Ross videos and going to sidewalk art shows. He especially loved to do outdoor scenes like rivers, waterfalls, mountains, and cabins.

Rodney earned the nickname Pew from his siblings at a very young age, based on the cartoon character Pepe La Pew. Pew was well known to be a very slow and non-excitable animal, and this fit Rodney’s personality perfectly. His siblings always teased him that he would never be on time for anything, and his mother would tell him that dinner would be served at 5:00 if she wanted to serve it at 6:00. Even with that extra hour he would still be late. If Rodney told you he would be over to clean your furnace on Tuesday – look for him on Thursday.

Rodney was predeceased by his parents Larry and Colette.

He is survived by his brothers, Joe Theriault and his wife Celeste, Danny Theriault and wife Vicky, and Patrick Theriault; as well as his sister Cathy Taylor and husband Dan; niece Danielle Woods (Jesse), and nephews Eric Theriault (Kristina) and Dustin Taylor (Sara); great-nephews Wyatt Taylor, Caden Woods, and Emmitt Theriault; great-nieces Sophia Taylor, Olive Theriault and Atley Woods.

A graveside service was held at St. Francis Cemetery on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Arrangements under the direction and care of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.

EMILY A. HARTUNG

SIDNEY – Emily Ann Doak Hartung, 68, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2022, following a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Emily Ann Doak Hartung was born in Bath, to Marthon, Jr. and Elizabeth “Betty” Howard Doak, of Days Ferry, on October 2, 1953. She was the third of five children.

Emily graduated from Morse High School in 1971 where she was active in outdoor track and field, swimming, and figure skating. Emily loved spending time at Popham Beach and getting together with her girlfriends. She always said that life was about choices, it was important to bloom where you are planted, and lead with positivity.

She went on to study education at the University of Maine at Farmington. Emily was crowned Miss Maine International in 1973 and traveled to New Orleans to compete in the Miss USA-International pageant. Emily was an active member of the Phi Nu Omega Sorority and UMF ski team. At UMF, she swept Dallas Hartung off his feet and after graduating, the two were married on August 23,1975. Emily went on to teach fifth grade before diving into a career in business. She pursued her passion for teaching through being a Girl Scout Troop Leader.

Emily was best known as one of the founding members and co-owner of the first female-owned and operated business in downtown Farmington, The Calico Patch. “The Patch” was known and loved by many as a fine gift shop that Emily ran for 37 years. She was also a founding member of Devaney, Doak, and Garrett Booksellers. Emily had a passion for supporting other female entrepreneurs by promoting their handiwork in the shop and was active in the Farmington Downtown Association. She was also a dedicated member of the Farmington Historical Society, brought joy to the Pierce House residents through her companionship and artwork, celebrated friendships at Old South Congregational Church, and served as secretary, director, and later president of the Ward Pond Association.

When her daughters called her to travel, Emily gladly went along for the ride. As a family, they visited Canada, Germany, Italy, England, and most recently traversed the state of North Carolina from beach to mountains. Emily delighted in scouring the shelves at the Farmington Public Library and sharing her passion for reading with her family. In her free time, Emily enjoyed quilting with the Blue Moon Quiltmakers and painting with watercolor and acrylic. En plein air painting was Emily’s favorite way to create art, surrounded by nature. She founded Emily’s Salon where artists would gather together weekly to paint on her sunlit, plant-filled porch.

Emily and Dallas spent every summer and eventually retired at their camp on Ward Pond, in Sidney. In retirement, Emily enjoyed playing pickleball, baking with her grandkids, skiing with girlfriends, being part of Wine Club, and playing nightly Rummikub games with Dallas and neighbors.

She enjoyed daily swims across the pond and teaching her grandchildren how to swim and jump off the dock. She taught them how to not take life too seriously, use their imagination while playing dress up, and took them on adventure walks to find fairy gardens. When she wasn’t “poolside”, Emily was getting her hands dirty in the garden. Her gardens were her pride and joy. Emily loved to entertain friends and family surrounded by fruitful blooms that attracted countless birds, butterflies, and bees. This was her “slice of heaven” and she delighted in gifting plants to others so they too could find the joy in gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Dallas Lee Hartung, of Farmington; her two daughters, Jennifer and husband Davyd Collinson and their children Guinevere Elizabeth (8) and Noah William (6) of Litchfield, and Lisa Hartung and husband Brent Watkins and their child Maeve Ann (1), of Cary, North Carolina; her siblings Andrea (Jack) Conner, of Freeport, and Greg (Susan) Doak, Randy (Valerie) Doak, and Warren Doak, all of Woolwich; her father-in-law Alton “Honk” Hartung, of Manchester; and sister-in-law Terry Bourisk, of Winthrop.

In his younger years, Ken enjoyed riding his Harley and going on bike trips with his wife, Joy. Ken never missed one of Josh’s baseball practices or games, even when he had a list of things to do a mile long. Ken idolized his beautiful granddaughter, Addisyn Harper. She was the light of his life and he looked forward to all of her sleepovers at Grammy and Grampy’s house. Ken never missed a minute of overtime and thought of his CMP co-workers as his “second family”. Everyone knew Ken as the most loving husband, father, sibling, and son a family could ask for.

Ken loved to host summer barbecues, entertain friends and family, and became the patriarch of the family after the death of his father, Aime and his mother, Connie. Uncle Ken will always be remembered by his many nieces and nephews as the uncle who would tease the living heck out of them. As much as he teased, they always knew that if they were in any trouble or needed anything, they could always rely on their Uncle Ken. Ken’s antics were legendary and those who knew him have their own stories to tell. Though he appeared to have a tough exterior, Ken had a heart of gold. His biggest joy in life was to always lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it.

Ken is survived by his wife, Joy; son, Joshua and his wife Erin; granddaughter, Addisyn Harper; his siblings Gloria LaPierre, Jane LaPierre (Ernie), Danny LaPierre (Paula), Lisa LaPierre-Cote, Gary LaPierre (Tammy) and Amy Steiniger (John); and many cousins; nieces, nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; older sister, Sandra (Lapierre) Damren, and his infant son, Brandon Joshua LaPierre.

No funeral service is being held.

GLENN A. LEAVITT

WATERVILLE – Glenn A. Leavitt, 66, of Waterville, passed away  on Monday, August 22, 2022. Glenn was born on May 9, 1956 in Millinocket to Richard and Shirley Leavitt.

He graduated from Waterville Senior High School in 1975.  He married Cynthia Williams Leavitt, his high school sweetheart, on June 22, 1974.

After graduating high school, he began working for Milton Vending, in Waterville, and then, for most of his career, he worked as a wine sales representative for Pine State Trading Co. These careers provided him the opportunity to do one of his favorite things, meet and talk with different people. He never forgot a name and always made everyone he met feel like they had been friends forever.

Glenn’s love for sports was passed on to his children at a very early age. Bruins, Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots (and even the Cowboys for a couple of years until he realized the error of his ways) were his favorite teams. He realized the important role sports played in children’s lives. So much so, that not only did he encourage his children to play every sport possible (although he may have regretted hockey and the 5 a.m. practices), but he also spent years volunteering his time to coach Waterville youth baseball, hockey and football.

Glenn’s love for community continued as he became a member of the Waterville Elks Lodge #905. He was an active and dedicated member becoming the Exalted Ruler from 2002-2003 and took every opportunity to help those in need. The parties, dances and comedy shows he organized to help raise funds for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program will be fondly remembered by all who attended.

Glenn’s favorite place to be was at the family camp in Benedicta, (Beno). He was never happier than when he was sitting by the campfire with family for hours, playing cribbage and frisbee with his grandchildren or telling stories from his childhood about the old homestead in Millinocket and “Little Italy”. Glenn was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who always made sure his family came first. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He never missed an opportunity to brag about them. He loved going to his grandson’s baseball games, giving them all money to get ice cream on the way home and bringing them all to the Elks when they had events for children. His love, devotion, humor and larger than life personality will be greatly missed by all who knew him

Glenn is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cynthia, of Waterville; son, Chris and his wife, Lisa, of West Gardiner, son, Brandon and his wife, Alisa, of China, daughter, Bethany, of Waterville; sister, Deborah Colangelo, and her husband, Stephen Gilman, of Waterville; aunt, Dorothy “Dot” Howard, and her husband Frank, of Millinocket; uncle, Bruce Leavitt, and his wife, Paula, of Carmel; grandchildren Jaidyn, Zoey, Makayla and Reece; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Leavitt, mother, Shirley Colangelo Leavitt; brothers, Keith Leavitt, David Leavitt, and Brian Leavitt.

A memorial service was held on September 11, at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant St., Waterville.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.VeilleuxFuneralHome.com for the Leavitt family.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Veilleux and Redington Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Maine Children’s Cancer Program at  https://fundraising.mmc.org/mccp-donate-now or Maine Medical Center, Philanthropy Department, 22 Bramhall St. Portland, ME 04102.

MARGARET A. PACKARD

WATERVILLE – Margaret Anne (Ohrt) Packard, 94, died at her home, in Waterville, on Friday, August 26, 2022. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 8, 1927, to parents John Benno Ohrt and Margaret Louise Cowles.

Peggy, as she was nicknamed, was the youngest of her siblings, John, Dorothy and Henry. During her childhood Margaret moved multiple times while the family followed her father’s job in the oil business. Besides Tulsa, her youth found her living in San Antonio, Houston, Berlin, Germany, Mexico City, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Los Angeles.

After her parents’ remarriages, she traveled between Houston, Texas, and Livermore Falls. As a result, Margaret experienced a great variety of adventures and educational settings that fueled numerous later stories. She was a terrific storyteller.

In the 1940s while living in Brunswick, she met her future husband, Christopher Moore Packard. In 1950, they married in Québec City, Canada, and returned to Brunswick where Chris completed his studies at Bowdoin College.

Margaret worked at the Walker Art Museum where she set up a crib for their infant daughter, Margaret Bellamy, in the lobby. A son, Christopher Moore, followed and by that time the family had moved to the Packard farmhouse in the Pennellville neighborhood of Brunswick. Margaret was a homemaker while her children were young and then worked at Senter’s department store, in Brunswick, until her retirement. Other jobs included years of editing her husband’s weekly nature columns for the local paper and supporting Audubon events.

Tuesday evening path clearing groups at the new Mast Landing Sanctuary, in Freeport, were fueled in part by her potato salad and pies. Not many cooks could rival her pies. Margaret was an avid reader and supporter of libraries. She enjoyed poetry, history, biography, and always a good mystery. She never missed Masterpiece Theater and loved opera.

A lasting legacy Margaret made was to ensure the land in Pennellville would remain conserved in memory of her husband, Christopher. Having grown up there, he had spent a lifetime observing and writing about the flora and fauna he experienced.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, siblings and husband.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Menchen, of Waterville; and son, Christopher (Kit) Packard, of Georgetown, and their spouses, Gary and Jane; grandchildren Christopher Menchen, of Benton, Margaret (Sadie) Menchen, of Los Angeles, California, and their spouses, Lacy and Megan, and Kylie Packard, of Tampa, Florida, and her fiancé Gregory Austin; and great-grandchildren Sara, Benjamin and Matthew Menchen, all of Benton.

Upon her wishes, there will be no memorial service and her family will gather at a later date.

Those who wish to honor Margaret may do so by supporting a local conservation group, animal shelter, or library, or by enjoying an opera.

She loved her daughter so very much and a part of Rhonda will live in Lahla forever.

Rhonda was an intense person to a stranger, but anyone who came to know her, knew that it was because of her deep passion for life. She did everything with 100 percent effort. Being a mom, cooking, baking, canning, painting, crocheting, listening to music, dancing, hosting holidays, making someone laugh, helping someone in need, going to church, and stopping by just to make someone’s day. With that said, Rhonda experienced a lot of tough things that comes with life; but she never let it get her down. Without Rhonda, a lot of people wouldn’t be where they are today.
