THERESA D. BEAULIEU

AUBURN – Theresa Diane Beaulieu, 92, of Auburn, passed away on Wednesday evening January 6, 2021, from age related difficulties, while holding the hand of her son Donald. Sadly, she also died of a broken heart from not being able to be with her family and friends during the last months of her life due to the pandemic.

Theresa loved her family, both immediate and extended, as well as friends and people in general. She loved talking and socializing with everyone she met, especially if they were talkers.

Her life was filled with joys as well as challenges and she met all of them with both common sense and courage.

One of her mottos was, “When you get up in the morning it is your choice whether or not it is going to be a good day.”

A true lover of learning and education, she was an avid reader and writer. She filled stacks of journals with her daily activities, thoughts and opinions.

Forced by her family’s needs to leave school after the eighth grade (she said she cried for a week when she was told she would have to do this) she went on to proudly earn her GED at the age of 49. She then entered the work force for the first time, working at Sears, in Lewiston, for the next 25 years.

Theresa loved nothing more than sitting in her rocking chair in the living room of her small house and holding court with whoever happen to be there, whether it was one person or a roomful.

Unfortunately, for a woman as social and people-loving as Theresa, her last months and weeks in complete lockdown at her nursing home took its toll. Not being able to see her family was probably the hardest way for her to spend her last days here on earth.
Hers was a life well lived…a life where no joy went unappreciated, no challenge went unmet and overcome.

This is a woman who left an indelible impression on everyone she met. And one who will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was predeceased by Reginald “Pete”, her husband of over 60 years; a grandson Benjamin; her sisters Loretta Meservier Arsenault, Lucienne Meservier Giasson, Rita Meservier Bazinet and brother Armand, and her “favorite” son in law Gilbert Smith.

She is survived by her children: Daniel and wife Deborah, of Waterville, Donald and partner Edward Libby, of Litchfield, Denise Beaulieu Smith, of Poland, and David and Janet Beaulieu, of Auburn; grandchildren, Nicole Rioux, of Sabattus, Adrianne Rioux Tapley and spouse Ken, of Lewiston, Rebekah Beaulieu and spouse Patrick Ford, of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Cindi Beaulieu, of Westbrook, Damon Beaulieu and spouse Kouko, of Providence, Rhode Island, Bethany Beaulieu, of Minot, Heather Beaulieu, of Auburn; great-grandchildren, Taelor Jordan, of Boston, Massachusetts, Justin Harding, of Poland, and Evan Libby, of Lewiston; siblings, sister Claudette Meservier Caron, of Lewiston, brother Lionel and spouse Janine, of Auburn, and sister Jeanine Meservier St. Pierre and spouse Claude “Pete”, of Lewiston, and sister in law Diane Meservier; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A formal funeral, memorial service and reception to celebrate Theresa’s life will be held later in the year when things are safer.

Online condolences may be left for Theresa’s family at www.thefortingroupauburn.com.

Services have been entrusted to The Fortin Group/Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home, Cremation and monument services, 217 Turner St., Auburn, ME, telephone 207-783-8545.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, December 17, 2020

MARY L. WEEKS

WATERVILLE – Mary Louise (Bernard) Weeks, 88, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020. She was born in Falmouth on June 25, 1932, the daughter of Harry and Louise Bernard.

Mary was an avid dancer. Anytime there was music playing she would dance to the rhythm. This is how she gained the nickname March Two. She was a graduate of Waterville High School exceling and receiving awards for her typing skills.

Mary married her sweetheart, Harland, on April 5, 1952, at the age of 19, right before he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Mary was a Catholic and Harland a Protestant, so marrying the two religions was very rare in those days. Mary’s brother would mock his sister when Harland would go see her in Falmouth in his best teenage girl voice, “Oh, Harland how’ve missed you.” Little did he know they would be married 68 years! They stayed forever in love which is such a rare occurrence today.

Mary worked for the telephone company as an operator for many years before becoming a housewife and mother to the couple’s three children. In later years, she worked along side Harland at their family business, A.L. Weeks and Sons, on Kennedy Memorial Drive, as the bookkeeper for many years before they both retired in 1998.

After retirement, she devoted her time to her love of cooking, crafting and her faith. She was on several boards at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church. She volunteered endless hours crafting, baking and running the church’s annual rummage and bake sale.

In their free time Harland and Mary would frequent their camp on Great Pond, and later on Lake Hebron. They enjoyed making fond memories with their grandchildren, taking yearly trips to the coast for lobster or having sleep overs at their camps, always supplied with cookies and cream ice cream. A trip to camp was never complete without a visit from Smokey in the peppermint room.

Mary’s family was the focus of her life. She loved hosting every holiday, always with a buffet of every food and pastry you could think. She enjoyed decorating for Christmas. She was famously known for her peanut butter fudge. Anytime someone was sick they knew to call her for some piping hot homemade chicken noodle soup.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Bobby, Joe and George William.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Harland L. Weeks; daughter Julie, husband Bob, children Tiffany and Danielle and great-grandchildren Avery, Brooklyn, Cole, Landon and Connor; son Chris and wife Janet, their children Amanda and Christopher, great-grandchildren Wyatt and Mikaela; daughter Tammy, husband Roger, their children Timothy and Jonathan, great-grandchildren Hannah, Samuel and Harland; her sister, Elizabeth Jensen; a niece, Dorothy Towle; brother-in-law Marynard Weeks and wife Cheryl; many nieces and nephews.

There will be a spring service and burial. Funeral services are under the direction and care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

DR. MARILYN S. MAVRINAC

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Dr. Marilyn Sweeney Mavrinac, 93, long-time resident of Waterville, died on Sunday, November 29, 2020. While she passed away in Wisconsin, where she had been living for the past 10 years, Dr. Mavrinac maintained strong ties to Waterville.

Dr. Mavrinac is described by her children as a scholar, world traveler, adventurer, athlete, and wife and mother extraordinaire. Always interested, always involved, Dr. Mavrinac, a European historian, was determined to discover the world, its people, its places, and its history.

From the time she was a young girl, Dr. Mavrinac was devoted to learning. She began her higher education at Wellesley College, continuing her studies at Columbia University, where she earned her master’s degree, then proceeded to Harvard University, where in 1953 she began her doctoral studies in history. Over the course of her career, she taught at Hathaway Brown School, Columbia, Wellesley, the American University in Cairo, and later Colby College.

In 1957, Dr. Mavrinac temporarily set aside her scholarly pursuits to build her family with her great love, her husband, Albert Mavrinac, whom she met at Harvard. The pair traveled extensively, moving the family for periods of work and study from the home base in Maine to Africa, Asia, and Europe.

While raising her children in Waterville and overseas, Dr. Mavrinac was always involved in a mix of professional and community service activities. After teaching at Colby for a number of years, she was appointed chairman of its education department, where she built the student-teacher practicum program. At Colby, Dr. Mavrinac also developed her scholarly studies of the education of French women and the history of French Canadian settlers in Waterville, interviewing a number of local residents in Waterville as part of her research.

In her mid-60s, after her children had grown, she resumed her doctoral research, much of it undertaken in France, receiving her doctorate from Harvard University in the early 1990s.

In between their travel and study, Marilyn and Albert also made time for community involvement. After her husband passed away in 2006, Marilyn maintained her volunteer work and an active research agenda. She volunteered in a variety of organizations in Waterville, in the local Democratic Party, and in church and civic groups. She was proud to be among those organizing the first local celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. day, in Waterville.

Marilyn and Albert were also avid tennis players, and were fixtures on the indoor and outdoor courts at Colby. Into her 70s, Dr. Mavrinac played in numerous tournaments, at times defeating opponents half her age.

Dr. Mavrinac is survived by her five children, Georgia (Mike), Susan (Tom), Sarah (Neil), Emily (Paul) and Tony (Yvette); 12 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and myriad friends and colleagues in Maine and throughout the world.

ROBERTA F. DICKINSON

FAIRFIELD – Roberta “Bert” Faye (Quimby) Dickinson, 83, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. She was born July 21, 1937, in Bingham, to the late Alston Bertell Sr., and Dorothy Irene (Lindsay) Quimby Brooks.

Although she never made national headlines for curing the common cold or writing the next great novel, Roberta lived a full and rich life. For 17 years she followed Sonny across the country as he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, or waited patiently for him at home during the times he had to be away for duty. Many times she had to be mother, father, chief cook and bottle washer to her girls, and the many other children who filled her life and loved her like a mother. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Bert and Sonny returned home to Maine where they spent the next 36 years working and loving and living. Always ready for a game of Yahtzee, Roberta also enjoyed conquering word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and exploring the world without leaving home through her love of reading. Above all else, she loved her family.

Roberta is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Laurel “Sonny” L. Dickinson Jr., and her sister, Marilyn “Mal” (Quimby) Spaulding.

Roberta is survived by four daughters, Dottie Dickinson-Greene and husband Mervin, of Fairfield, Laurie Buzzell and husband Rick, of Clinton, Janet Keicher and husband John, of Brookline New Hampshire, Leslie Jones and husband Steve, of Benton; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred ‘Millie’ Blackwell, of New Philadelphia Ohio; brother, Alston ‘Sonny’ Quimby Jr. and wife Wanda, of Madison; brother, Philip ‘Phil’ Brooks, of Fairfield; as well as an extended family of sisters-in law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

It was Roberta’s wish that she not be remember with a funeral, so a celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family and in consideration of the current restrictions.

Arrangements under the direction and care of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan Maine 04976.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends wishing may make donations in Roberta’s memory to Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area, 304 Main Street, Waterville ME 04901.

ROYCE B. NELSON

PALERMO – Royce B. Nelson, 87, of North Palermo Road, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta, after suffering a stroke. Born in Palermo on April 6, 1933, he was the son of Jasper Nelson and Edith Nelson and the oldest of four children.

After graduating from Erskine Academy, in South China, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in North Carolina before volunteering to serve overseas in Korea. When he completed his military service, he returned home to Palermo and purchased his first Ford dump truck. He was a lifelong Ford owner and remained steadfast on the brand. He would go on to own a small fleet of trucks, hiring drivers and contracting with Blue Rock Industries and others to help pave many roads throughout the state. Later he was elected to serve as Road Commissioner in Palermo, with responsibility for maintaining and repairing the roads.

In 1963 he married his wife of 57 years, Jeannine. Together they built their home where they raised four children. He took pride in seeing his own livestock of Black Angus bred and born on his 300-acre farm he named Pond View Farms. In addition to owning over a hundred head of cattle, the farm was also the home to horses, pigs, chickens and his beloved German Shepherd, Duchess. It was a true labor of love for him.

Although he never fully retired from farming in his later years, he did take some time away from it, and he enjoyed camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren. As the years passed, he would eventually be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. His progression was blessedly slow and although Alzheimer’s eventually took from him his independence and his memory, it left his gregarious, funny and gentle personality fully intact. An honorable, self-made man with his own special brand of humor, he was well liked and always respected by all who met him.

Surviving is his wife, Jeannine Nelson, of Palermo; two sons, Todd Nelson and his wife Tina, and Troy Nelson and his wife Angie, both of Palermo; two daughters, Tammy Leeman and her husband David, of Newcastle, and Tracy Cardelli, of South Portland; six grandchildren: Jessica, Scott, Cody, Jenna, Alicia and Royce; and two great-grandchildren: Brady and Olivia.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, December 3, 2020

CHARLES FALES

FAIRFIELD – Charles Fales, 88, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2020. He was born on January 31, 1932, in Farmington, and resided with his parents, Charles and Ethel, and his four siblings in Dryden.

His family moved to Fairfield when he was a young boy, and he spent much of his time playing baseball, football, and basketball with his sisters Joanne and Betsy. He attended Lawrence High School, where he excelled in varsity sports and was the New England Foul Shooting Champion in his Senior year. He graduated as a member of the Lawrence class of 1950.

He then went on to attend Maine Maritime Academy, in Castine, graduating in 1954. While in attendance, he played on the Maine Maritime “Middies” baseball team, traveling to the southeastern United States and Cuba to play semi-professional baseball.

While in college, he met the love of his life, Ima June Wood, at a community dance at the Fairfield Center Grange Hall, and he would share many adventures with her over the next 61 years of his life. They married in 1953, and went on to have six children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and countless happy moments together.

Following his graduation from Maine Maritime Academy, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego, California. After serving in the Navy, he began his career with Babcock and Wilcox, and spent several years traveling the Eastern United States with his family.

In the 1970s, after years of travel, they decided to return to their hometown of Fairfield, where they resided in his childhood home. He began his career at Keyes Fibre Company, in Waterville, where he worked until his “first retirement” in 1995. He was always an industrious and diligent worker, and returned to work after retirement, supporting the maintenance departments at Colby College and MaineGeneral Medical Center, both in Waterville, as a boiler operator. He officially retired for the second time in 2012, at the age of 80. While residing in Fairfield, he supported his community in a variety of ways, serving on the MSAD #49 school board, as a coach for PAL youth baseball, and as a member of the American Legion.

In his later years, Charles enjoyed “ramming the roads” with his sweetheart, and taking trips to Hollywood Slots, in Bangor, and Foxwoods Resorts, in Connecticut. Mom enjoyed the slot machines, while he preferred harness racing – although they most preferred any adventure that involved each other. Over the years, he also enjoyed planning trips with his boys, especially to professional golf tournaments (hoping to catch a glimpse of “Tiger”) and horse races in California.

Charles, or “Bampie”, as he was lovingly called, was a dedicated and loving grandfather, and graciously shared his time, wisdom, advice, endless love, and loose change with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his soulmate, Ima; by his parents Charles Lyman Fales and Ethel Betsy Gilman Fales; as well as his siblings Emery, Robert, and Joanne.

He is survived by his children Jeanne and husband Eric, of Rockland, Charles Lyman Fales III and wife Terry, of Nantucket, Steven, of Fairfield, Jennifer and husband Steve Welch, of Farmingdale, Ted and wife Maria, of Nantucket, and Thad and partner Kathy, of Fairfield; his grandchildren Sara and husband Justin, Cory and wife Kelli, Jessica and husband Tyson, Brooks, Cassandra, Teddy, Seth, Monica, Isabelle, Olivia, Megan, MaKayla and Hunter; his great-grandchildren Emma, Kayla, Mila, Henry Charles, and Hazel; his sister Betsy Eaton, of Millinocket; his sister-in-law Pat Fales, of Damariscotta; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He attended Madison and Farmington school districts. He worked for MaineGeneral Medical Center, in mechanical services as a boiler technician. He loved his job and his work family. Jason enjoyed hunting, fishing and being out his boat for hours looking for the big ones.

Football was his greatest passion. After high school he continued to play for another 20 years, even starting his own team the Central Maine Warriors. An (Oakland/LasVegas) Raiders fan that bleed the silver and black, he was able to sit in the black hole at the Coliseum, one of the many items on his bucket list. He will still tell you “it was a Fumble.” Jason lived his life to the fullest and is a true Warrior. #Warrior42.

He loved everything about football that included being a coach for his son Jayson’s PAL team. He loved his adventures with his daughter Payton around New England, especially getting lobster rolls. His daughter Dakota would say he was her biggest cheerleader, cheering her on in all the sports she has played and wearing the number 42.

He is survived by his wife Crystal Goguen; his children Dakota, Jayson and Payton; his father Alan Goguen and mother Sally Lawrence; also stepmother Wendy Goguen and his second dad Mike Lawrence, many aunts and uncles and cousins.

HOLLY L. MARGOLIS

WATERVILLE – Holly Louise Margolis (Thede), 73, of Waterville, died peacefully in her home, on Monday, November 16, 2020. Holly was born October 24, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late Carl and Doris (Premer) Thede.

Holly and her family lived in many states during her childhood including Kansas, Colorado, Alabama and New Jersey. She graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, in 1965. Holly attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated in 1969 with a B.A. in sociology. Her college years introduced her to the great state of Maine and she carried her love and fondness of the state through the end of her life.

While Holly held a variety of jobs following her graduation from college, her most important career choice was raising and caring for her three daughters. The love of Holly’s life was her family.

In addition to Holly’s deep affection for her family, she had many loyal and supportive friends near and far; including close friends who she walked with daily, her neighborhood book club, a gym family and many relationships from her extensive community involvement.

As a resident of Waterville for the past 32 years, Holly was a dedicated volunteer for many local organizations and schools. She was a fixture in the George J. Mitchell School library where she volunteered reading to students every week, with the hope of increasing their love of reading and learning. Holly was a volunteer for the Waterville Public School Adult Education ESL class. She was also part of the Waterville Women’s Association, where she served as treasurer and helped to provide scholarships to women in financial need.

Holly was an avid reader, and she loved travel, nature and bird watching. Her daily rituals of feeding her backyard squirrels and chipmunks brought her many smiles. She found great joy in the annual family beach vacation at Goose Rocks Beach, particularly the daily family gatherings.

As a self-proclaimed “queen of moderation,” there was nothing moderate about the way Holly devoted herself to her family. She was never happier than when she was involved with her husband, daughters, grandchildren and other family members. Holly was unstinting in her concerns for all aspects of her family’s lives. She was the first to help in matters large and small. Holly will be truly missed and will remain in the hearts of so many.

Holly loved her cats, which she adopted from the Humane Society Waterville Area. Her cats were a constant source of companionship and entertainment.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Dr. John Margolis, of Waterville; her three daughters, Christi Nesbitt Marchette, of Norfolk, Massachusetts, Maggie Nesbitt Doby (Patrick), of State College, Pennsylvania, and Sarah Margolis McCracken (Michael), of Walpole, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Jake and Olivia Marchette, and Ryan and Ella Doby; her siblings Chris Thede Antonak (Richard) and Jefferson Thede; her sister-in-law Judy Katz (Herb); brother-in-law Doug Margolis; and nieces Becky Antonak Welch (Paul) and Marah Katz Herbach (Jonathan) and their children Connor Welch and Zachary and Matthew Herbach.

ALLEEN THOMPSON

WATERVILLE – Alleen Thompson, 101, passed away on November 13, 2020. Alleen was born in Waterville on September 18, 1919, to Margaret Arnold Thompson, of Waterville, and Mark R. Thompson, of Brookfield, New York.

An amazing woman, she lived an extraordinary life. Her love of books began early as she spent a good deal of time at the Waterville Public Library in her youth. She was a graduate of Waterville High School, and the class of 1940 at Colby College, Waterville, with a major in geology. She lived at home rather than on campus and became a member of the Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She went on to earn her master’s degree in library science at Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts.

Alleen was accomplished in her work yet humble about her life experiences. She was a pioneer of her times when, while working at Penn State’s Engineering Library in 1941, the Navy organized its women’s auxiliary known as WAVES. She most enthusiastically joined the third class of WAVES and was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Miami, Florida, as a communications officer. As a WAVE ensign during World War II she was re-assigned to Kaneohe Naval Air Station, in Hawaii, in 1943. It was full on wartime in Hawaii and the work was demanding; decoding messages by the thousands, midnight watches, and tending the radios, teletypes, and switchboards. Alleen left the Navy after the war in 1945 as a full lieutenant.

Because Alleen was such a modest person about her accomplishments, some of her prestigious jobs may never be known to all. We do know, however, that for six years she held a top library post at the State Department of Public Health in Berkeley, California.

Around 1955, General Electric came calling as they were building the Dresden (Illinois) Power Station, to include a nuclear reactor. Her job would be to build a brand new library on atomic science from the ground up. The library was over 2,000 square feet and contained thousands of highly technical books, magazines, and publications, many of which were classified.

Still a WAVE Reserve, Alleen continued her communications job as head of General Electric Company’s special library at the Atomic Power Equipment Department, in San Jose, California. She was one of only a handful of women who rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Reserve, a post only two slots below Captain’s rank.

In 1965 she became the first West Coast woman elected as President of the Special Libraries Association. As Mrs. Elizabeth B. Roth (Head Librarian of the Standard Oil of CA Library) stated in her announcement, “In Alleen are combined the high standards of a New England education and the rough experience of mastering several western libraries. You can’t show her a library problem that can’t be identified, attacked, and licked. Eastern skeptic and Western pragmatist, she admires wit and aggressiveness, especially in special librarians.” One of the highlights of her presidency was being invited to the White House and introduced as one of the “1200 Most Influential Persons in the United States” for her time. In 1970, she was tasked with setting up a library in Korea. In 1982, Alleen was named to the Special Libraries Association’s Hall of Fame.

She traveled extensively for work and pleasure visiting Art Museums throughout Europe, Japan, and India to name a few. Alleen visited well over 40 countries during her remarkable life journey.

Alleen returned to her Waterville roots in 1998 making the solo cross-country trip by car with her belongings and two cats. Being back in Waterville, Alleen had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and with what the city had to offer. That had to include all things Colby! She enjoyed lectures, the Great Books programs, the plethora of exhibitions at the Colby Museum of Arts, attending all of Professor Brancaccio’s film classes offered through the Goldfarb Center, and the campy fun at the Broadway Musical Reviews, which she often introduced to friends. As a proud alumna, Alleen followed every accomplishment, accolade, and innovation of the college with great interest.

She enjoyed shows and events at the Waterville Opera House, and was a member of the Waterville Historical Society, and the Central Maine Garden Club. Alleen supported the many animals at Waterville Humane Society even donating “Poppy’s Room” out of her love of cats. She was an active supporter of her favorite charities, many including causes for all animals and the environment as well as the Waterville branch of the Salvation Army.

Alleen was a traditionalist by nature, preferring to be addressed as Miss Thompson unless she knew you on a more personal basis. She loved wearing stylish skirts and dresses rather than slacks complimented by the perfect hairstyle and handbag. She enjoyed eating out and did not mind travelling for good meals, most notably with her group of friends who made their yearly outing to The Lost Kitchen.

Out of respect for her wishes, there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the care of Veilleux & Redington Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, ME. http://www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alleen’s name to Colby College, Division of College Advancement, 173 Main St., Suite 201, Waterville, ME 04901, or Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Rd., Waterville, ME 04901. ERVIN H. TYLER

WINSLOW – Ervin Herman Tyler, 99, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, following a long battle with COPD. He was born on June 7, 1921, in Benton.

He was the beloved husband of Audrey (Witham) Tyler for 75 years. Theirs was the strongest of love, and a marriage to emulate. His home was always full of joy and laughter. He teased Audrey endlessly which was a true display of his affection. How he loved his family, it was the “core” of his existence.

As a young boy he moved to Freedom. During those early years he loved “Gram” Tyler’s cooking, sliding, working on the farm and playing with the family dogs and cats. He went to grammar school in Freedom and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1940. He played on the baseball and track teams. In his adult years, he liked to hunt, fish, garden, mow lawns, go to country fairs, going for rides with the family to see relatives and friends, grocery shopping for and taking family and friends to appointments.

He enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Boston Red Sox, wrestling and various news channels. He liked discussing current events as well as reminiscing about “the good old days”. His memory was remarkable even at age 99.

For years, he attended the University of Maine’s girls’ basketball games, even at the age of 88. He loved going to his grandson’s swim meets and his great-grand children’s soccer games.

In the 80’s, he enjoyed going to breakfast with his “breakfast group” seeing the folks at Wendy’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. Ervin met friends at McDonald’s in Winslow every Wednesday night for 15 years and they became his “McDonald’s family”. He was very fond of his neighbors who became true friends and so enjoyed visits from them.

Ervin was an active member of the Benton Falls Congregational Church. For years, he was an usher and worked on church suppers. He loved serving people and telling them about his church. He was very fond of his ministers, Jack Quigg and Pastor Kim Shrader and looked forward to their visits.

In 1940, Ervin worked in the woods cutting cord wood for $2.00 a day and got a cord a day. In 1941, he worked at the Bryant Mill (Freedom Novely Mill) now known as the Mill at Freedom Falls. He ran a lathe making wooden screwdriver handles for 32 cents an hour. He was the only person who ever worked there that attended the mill open house on June 5, 2013. Two of the handles he made are on display in the mall showcase. Ervin was in a documentary film about the mill which was part of the Camden Film Festival and was shown at the Strand Theater, in Rockland, on September 29, 2013. At this premier, Tony Grassi, project manager, showed the audience two of the screwdriver handles he made, even at age 92, Ervin was able to attend this premier and was recognized by the audience of over 200 people. In March 2014, the Freedom Mill documentary was shown at the Environmental Film Festival, in Washington, DC.

Ervin had an extremely strong work ethic. He worked for Hollingworth and Whitney and Scott Paper Company, in Winslow, for 41-1/2 years, retiring in 1983 as a back-tender on #4 paper machine. He only missed a few days of work due to surgery. When the roads were impassable, he would snowshoe or walk the 10 miles to work. After retiring, he worked part time at Poor Bob’s Store, in Benton.

Ervin was a World War ll Army veteran entering the service in 1944 and discharged in 1946. He served in the European Theatre and the 15th District Mechanized Constabulary. He took his basic training at camp Joseph T. Robinson, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had to be a skilled hunter to survive back home in Freedom, and this skill served his well in the Army. Ervin went overseas when the Battle of the Bulge was nearly over. It took eleven days on a liberty ship to arrive in France. From France, he went to Belgium, Holland and finally Germany. He was the oldest charter member of the Winslow VFW Post #8835, and one of the oldest members of the Fairfield American Legion Post #14. Yearly, he attended the ceremonies in the Veterans Memorial Park in Winslow, standing for hours, even in the coldest of weather. He was in many Winslow Fourth of July parades. He loved his country and in a show of patriotism only purchased American made products.

At age 97, Ervin needed help with the activities of everyday living and his primary caregiver, from Helping Hands, was Mike Levesque. When Ervin was asked how Mike cared for him, Ervin had one word to describe Mike’s care, “Perfect”. They became good friends and they shared many laughs and stories. He was also very pleased with the work of his part time caregiver, Angela Marie Tracy.

Ervin was a handsome man with a “boyish grin” and loved to tell stories and jokes. He had the “unique” quality of making others feel special.

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Tyler; his grandsons, Mark McCutcheon and his wife Laurie, Michael and his wife Deanna McCutcheon; three great-grandchildren, Justin McCutcheon, Kristi McCutcheon Francey and her husband Dana, and Ian McCutcheon; his great-great grand children, Madeline and Liam Francey, and Penelope McCutcheon; a brother, Clarence Tyler Jr.; son-in-law, Harold McCutcheon and his partner Sharon Lamb; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

DAVID K. DIXON

CLINTON – David Keith Dixon, 77, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, inside the home he built, in Clinton, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on April 5, 1943, to Lorimer Dixon and Mildred Nason as their sixth and final child.

When Dave was less than two years old, his father died. Nine years younger than his closest sibling, Dave was presented with and accepted responsibilities typically designated for those much older. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 where he trained and worked as a mechanic. He was stationed in Korea and Panama and would fondly recall details of his escapades long after memories started escaping him.

When Dave returned from the service, he was the envy of a small town when he courted and married Janet Dow. The couple married in 1965 and celebrated their 55th anniversary last month. Dave and Jan moved out of state early in their marriage and lived in Virginia and Florida before returning home. Dave, Jan, and their two eldest children moved into his childhood home with Mildred to care for her. In 1977 a fire claimed the long-time family home which resulted in Dave building their next home. Shortly thereafter, Dave and Jan spent multiple years of any free time they had building a log house nearby which became their family’s home.

The independence developed early on through responsibility and hard work, served Dave well as he provided for his family, and worked endless hours to improve their lives. That same independence led Dave to pursue a career where he answered only to himself and those dependent on him. Dave pedaled auto parts all over Maine until buying the former Tiny Bill’s building on Main St., in Clinton, and converting it in 1992 to DAC Distributors, an auto parts store, which now, with its second owner, is still open for business. Dave operated the business along with his eldest son Randall until 2009. Dave developed his venture into a successful business without doing it at anyone else’s expense. He was honest and refused to profit more than he felt was fair. He gave his customers the benefit of the doubt and was always willing to allow his patrons credit.

Dave recognized what a gift his wife was to him and kissed her goodbye every time he left the house. Despite his fleeting memory he never forgot who she was. He was tenacious, loved a good adventure, dreamt of lakes he hadn’t fished, enjoyed watching car racing, holidays, whoopie pies, bumper cars, watching the birds, and being in the woods. He had an incredible ability to tell stories that would often result in the listener being held hostage until he was done telling it. His favorite place was on the water with a fishing rod in hand and a trout on the hook. He was able to fulfill a dream when he and Jan built their camp on Moosehead Lake where his family would gather every Memorial Day and July 4th.

Dave worked hard until his mind and body failed him. He battled Alzheimer’s Disease for the last decade and never conceded. He fished, cut, and delivered wood and helped out those he loved until the end. He recognized he wasn’t as sharp as he’d once been throughout the majority of his struggle, but Dave’s deterioration still exceeded most’s baseline.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Dixon, and their four children, Randall (Kimberly), Michelle, Douglas, Chad (Tawnya); his six grandchildren, Eric (Danielle) Elizabeth, Katherine, Isaac, Evelyn, and Luke; his two great-grandchildren; his brother, Clifford Dixon, his sisters-in-law, Linda White and Stephanie Dow, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are through Dan and Scott’s Cremation.

For those wishing to make memorial contributions in his memory please consider the Alzheimer’s Association or Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

There will be a graveside service at Greenlawn Cemetery, in Clinton.
