PHILLIP D. BROWN

ALBION — Phillip David Brown “Phil”, 37, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2019, due to a tragic car accident.

When Phil walked in any room, it lit up when he smiled. If you needed a friend, he was always a phone call away. During and after any snowstorm if Phil saw an elderly person shoveling, he would stop and shovel the snow for them.

Phil loved being a father, fishing, sitting around a campfire, finding fiddleheads, coaching football, and doing carpentry. He was a man of many trades. While working you would always find him with his earbuds in jamming out.

Phil was predeceased by his brothers, Brian and Ricki.

Phil is survived by his father Richard Brown; mother Renee Hall; stepmother, Lori Brown; children, Aurora and Connor; wife, Maxine Brown Whiteside; brothers, Jeremy Brown and Brian Sims, sisters, Janet Smith and Angie Foster. SHIRLEY M. BUZZELL

WATERVILLE – Shirley Margaret (Tardiff) Buzzell, 82, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2019. Shirley was born in Waterville, the daughter of the late William and Aurora (Bouchard) Tardiff.

Shirley graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1955, and while she lived elsewhere for a time, Maine was always her home. She was happiest when all the people she loved were close by. Shirley will be forever remembered for her candor, her wicked sense of humor, and her delicious banana bread. She loved her husband George immensely, and his death in 2011 left her bereft. The two enjoyed visiting family in Bar Harbor, driving up Cadillac Mountain, hosting family gatherings, and hollering to each other from different rooms in their home. She never really forgave him for leaving her to wash the dishes alone.

Shirley loved to read, knit, crochet, and bake, but most enjoyed sharing her gifts with others. One of Shirley’s hobbies was stockpiling food and dry goods; if you ever needed dish towels, tortiere pie or toilet paper, Shirley was your lady. She worked hard all her life and was a fixture in the local community. Her retirement capped off decades at The 107, in Winslow, making the best breakfast pizza, giving out pretzels to the kids, and chatting up loyal customers during her morning shift. Shirley also spent years waitressing at Ken’s Family Restaurant, in Winslow, before the flood of ‘87, and at the Winslow VFW. Her gregarious nature shined through in her work and endured to her last days. Shirley was most proud of her family, loyal friendships, and her 36 years of sobriety.

She leaves behind siblings Richard and his wife Shirley, and Sharon, as well as her children, Cyndi, Debbie, Steve, Tammy, Jeff, David, Ricky, Rose, Donna, Anne, Brenda, and Steve; her in-laws, nieces and nephews, and cousins; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, George, and her siblings Raymond, John, Patricia, Joan, James and Daniel.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to honor her love for her rescued dog, Casco, by way of the Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901, or to the important work of the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine, 383 US Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.

He was a full-time pastor for over 30 years, serving in Texas, Maine and New Hampshire. His last church was Boothbay Baptist Church, in which he ministered for more than 13 years. BRIAN E. BLODGETT

ATHENS – Brian Elic Blodgett, 67, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 17, 2019, at his home in Athens. Brian was born on October 3, 1951, in Fairfield, to Clarence Sr. and Christine Blodgett.

He was raised as one of 15 brothers and sisters on their family dairy farm. He attended the Fairfield school district where he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball.

In his early youth he worked hard doing chores on the farm and spent his free time raising chaos with his siblings, more so with his brothers. They would play whatever musical instrument they had on the hill behind the house, or toss around a ball that had seen many miles in its day. Laughter could be heard in whatever they did and many memories where made outside in the fields behind the farm.

Later in high school after seeing many of his brothers go into service Brian enlisted in the National Guard. He was a handsome young fellow in his uniform. He watched as his siblings grew and married off. He met his wife-to-be a few years after graduating. They married on June 10, 1972.

He worked at Norwolk Shoe Company and Dexter Shoe. They lived in an apartment downstairs from their in-laws until they were ready to purchase a home on Hilton Hill Road, in Skowhegan. At this time their first two children were born, Crystal and Brian II. When the kids were five and three, respectively, the family moved to a farm in Athens where Brian decided to go back to his roots and take up dairy farming. Thirteen years later two more children were born, Alexander and Philip. The house was full and busy from dawn until dusk.

As their eldest children grew and moved away from the farm, Brian and Linda’s lives changed also. It was a difficult decision, but after running dairy then beef and back to dairy cows, they sold the farm. They kept a piece of land down the road where they built their final home. His later years were spent enjoying the outdoors whenever he could and puttering around the house. He cherished the company of his four children, thirteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was the hardest working man we will ever know and never spent time passing judgment on others. His heart was big and his laughter loud. He will be greatly missed by all. We all love you for every family title you hold.

He is survived by a large family. His wife Linda, of 47 years, and his four children – Crystal and her husband Jim Bowman and their children, Brian II and his family, Alexander and his wife Jennifer and their children, and Philip and his family, as well as Brian’s siblings and their ever growing families.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Those wishing to give condolences to the family may send cards to : Alex Blodgett, PO Box 105, Athens, ME 04912.

JOSEPH S. THERIAULT

CHINA – Joseph Stanley (Stan) Theriault 83, of China, passed away peacefully on Fridasay, July 26 , 2019, at his son’s home. He was born to Josie and Joseph Theriault in Knox on April 5, 1936.

Thus everyone in the Knox area and family knew him as ( Stan ) or Stanley to avoid the confusion but throughout his work life he was ( JOE ).

He was the devoted husband of 64 years to Constance ( Bernier ) Theriault, who he met in high school in Westbrook and later married in 1955. They moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan, to start his career in the medical field as a lab tech, which took him to many hospitals around the country, Delaware Ohio, Sandusky, Ohio, and Bellvue, Ohio, where he decided to leave the medical profession.

He was a very fast study in whatever he chose to tackle and after remodeling their home in Castalia, Ohio, he decided he was now a carpenter and joined the Carpenters Union and was happy as a clam. He was involved in the construction of (at the time ) the largest wooden roller coaster in the world at Cedar Point Amusement Park, Sandusky, Ohio, a story he told often. He then partnered with a friend and decided to build and sell travel trailers and truck campers for a while, which after a year or so he realized he was not the partnering type.

Thus, after 14 years of the sweet sounds of Maine calling him, they decided to move back to Maine in 1970 to enjoy Maine. He now being a Union Carpenter, his first job in Maine was helping to build Maine Yankee, a fact he was quite proud of. It didn’t take long and he was on his way up the construction ladder. He was assistant supervisor for Peachey Builders during construction of the JFK Mall, in Waterville, and later as their top superintendent for many years. He was also in charge of the Elm Plaza renovation for Pittsfield Industries, when the Bonanza restaurant was built and Grant’s was remodeled. He had many very interesting construction jobs over the years that took him and his wife all over the country, and he loved to talk about them all. Construction was his passion.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Connie; his sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Rebecca, and Tim and Rebecca, all of China; his younger brother Theodore Theriault, of Keyport, New Jersey; many of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his two youngest sons Steven Douglas Theriault and Michael Stanley Theriault, both taken far too young and it was a bitter pill for him to swallow. He was also predeceased by a brother at birth and a sister.

ALEC C. HARTMAN-NUTTING

VASSALBORO – Alexander Charles Hartman-Nutting, 30, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. He was born on February 28, 1989.

His friends and family knew him as a thoughtful, soft-spoken, brilliant, and talented young man. His calling for photography produced over a million indelible images including one entitled First Day, First Light, which decorated the Governor of Maine’s office in Augusta. Another, Dancing Bear, brought him worldwide recognition.

In spite of being inseparable from his camera equipment, computer, and cell phone, Alec loved nature. He often painstakingly took hours and days arranging to capture a perfect image like Afternoon Tea, a chipmunk sipping tea from a china teacup with cake and silverware at the ready, and First Day, First Light, a magical image taken after driving all night to the eastern edge of the U.S., in Lubec, at the dawn of a new year. Other pictures required a quick eye and shutter to capture. Lynx Triplets caught three lynx cubs posing perfectly together on a fallen tree at Mosquito Lake, Alaska. Dancing Bear is a near-impossible shot of a grizzly bear cub as he stood up on one toe for a better look at the photographer. Jetstream captures sky-filling blood red clouds raked down the middle like a scar. His logo – the picture that started it all – is Ewe Portrait, with a sheep’s eye so intricate you could feel her looking back.

For Alec, Heaven was a quiet and calm journey deep out of doors until he unwound at the perfect spot. Then and there, flora and fauna recognized his peaceful presence and showed him how astonishingly beautiful they really are.

Alec gave all dogs and most people a chance. He loved his family and friends and would go above and beyond to see to their well-being. We loved him and still do. He enjoyed music with an edge, bands that reflected his darkly introspective side, and a great deal of volume. His band photography is nothing short of brilliant. Alec felt as at home in a sea of sweaty screaming fans as he did in nature. Music and those who made it energized him as if they shared a language. To him, it was life affirming.

Alec is survived by his parents, Peter West Nutting, of China, and Charlie Hartman, of Vassalboro; his cousin, Sam Hartman, of Manasquan, New Jersey; and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service for Alec will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 24 at the Winslow Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, at 12 Lithgow Street in Winslow.

The images referenced above can be seen at www.alecphoto.com.

Donations in Alec’s name can be made to one of the places he loved the most, Mohonk Preserve, online at www.mohonkpreserve.org.

Obituaries for Thursday, July 25, 2019

BRENDA E. McKAY

OAKLAND – Brenda E. McKay, 70, passed away in her beloved home on Snow Pond in Oakland, the morning of November 3, 2018, following a 10-month-long fight with pancreatic cancer, in Augusta, and then Boston. She was born in Farmington on March 28, 1948, the daughter of Edward and Katherine Pillsbury.

Brenda graduated from Farmington High School, Farmington, in 1966 and Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1970 with a degree in teaching. After graduation Brenda received her first teaching assignment and it was not for the faint of heart. A one room schoolhouse teaching first through sixth grade in the very rural town of West Forks. Across the street from the school was a family’s home which the local postmaster lived and worked out of the front. The postmaster and Brenda became quick friends; she was Joan McKay. When Joan’s son came home from the Navy after graduating from flight school as a Naval pilot in September 1970, Joan told Bill he must meet the local “school Marm” teaching in the same room Bill had attended years before. Joan told Bill that Brenda was from the Farmington area and since Bill had graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington before enlisting in the Navy, he figured he must have made her acquaintance at some point. Bill walked right into the classroom, disrupting Brenda’s lesson. She said, “Can I help you?” He looked at her and said, “Huh, I guess I don’t know you…” and walked out. The rest is history as they soon started dating and were married on October 21, 1972, and had 42 wonderful years of marriage until Bill’s passing in September 2014.

Brenda’s family and friends meant everything to her and she was always there for them with an ear to listen, shoulder to lean on, the warmest smile, cheek pinch, hug, infectious laugh and, oh, did she love to hoot at a sports game and tell a joke, and even if she messed up the punchline or the joke wasn’t that funny you just had to laugh because she was just that cute. She was simply the best, most loving, God fearing wife, mother and friend anyone could have ever asked for.

She is survived by her son, Cameron McKay and wife Jessica, and their children, Rylee, Grace and William; her daughter, Katherine McKay and her two children, Brooke and Ross, all of Oakland; her brother, Roger Pillsbury and sisters, Diane Mosher, Debbie Grant and a predeceased brother, Ferran.

Her extended family consisted of dear friends, from her sisters-in-law, local friends of Maine, and her college friends, forever to be named the “Ogunquit Girls,” although they had spread their wings from Ogunquit in more recent years, and you all know who you are, what your friendships meant and how forever grateful Brenda was for all of you.

A graveside burial where Brenda’s ashes will be placed by her husband’s will be held in Bingham, on Route 201, right on the river at 10 a.m., on Sunday, August 11. There will be a celebration of life following at T and B’s Banquet Center, in Skowhegan, on Route 201 from noon – 2 p.m., where refreshments will be served.
