Everyone knew when Brenda was on lunch break when the smell of her burned toast she loved so much permeated Klearview’s hallways.

Brenda loved reading, keeping track of the weather, thunderstorms, and tending her beautiful flower gardens. She loved every chance she could get to go to the beach, ocean, mountains, or “up north.”

She enjoyed jamming to her favorite band, U2; and shared two wonderful trips with her daughter to see U2 perform live.

She got great pleasure in the wild songbirds, hummingbirds, crows, squirrels, deer, woodchucks and raccoon families who frequented her well-stocked feeders for years. She loved all her kitties that came in and out of her life.

She especially enjoyed her many adventures through the years all over Maine and beyond with her daughter Angie.

DONALD B. SHORES SR.

OAKLAND – Donald B. Shores, Sr., a resident of Oakland and Fairfield Center, died on Monday, May 29, 2017, at Maine General Medical Center, in Augusta, following weeks of battling cancer and treatment complications. He was born on September 13, 1940, in Albion, the son of the late Erlon N. Sr. and Gladys (Brawn) Shores, and graduated from Besse High School in 1960.

Donald co-owned and operated with his sons, Shores Dairy Farm, from 1982 until retiring in April 2016. He loved his family, cows and cats. He cared for his friends and was always helping a stranger.

He was not a man of many words, saying he loved or cared about you, but he showed you through phone calls, giving unexpected gifts, remembering all his children and grandchildren on their birthdays and Christmas. He would drop off candy, flowers or gifts to those he wanted to show his appreciation. He kept his promises and was a man who made a difference in the lives he left behind.

He had fond memories and stories of his years working for Woolworth Estate, in Monmouth, for 12 years as herdsman and in their gardens/greenhouse until 1972. He moved his family to Fairfield to work for Tozier Farm, before purchasing his own dairy farm. He loved driving old beat-up looking white pick-ups. Bail-a twine and duct tape were his tools of choice. His truck cab was always full of his possessions and bags of cat food – this did not stop him from picking up a hitchhiker, and only his great-grandchildren liked to ride with him.

He is survived by his children, Jolene McPhetres, of Sangerville; Richard and Cheryl Shores, of Canaan, and their children Katie and Tyler; Deanna and David Proulx, of Oakland, and their children David E. and Brittany, and their children, Bailey and Brooklynn; and David T. and Betsy, of Oakland, and their children Dallas and Samantha; the mother of his children, and business partner, Judy Shores; Linda Daigle, of Fairfield Center, and her children Lisa, Larrisa, Laura, Larry and their families; brothers, Manley Shores, Amasa and Danny, all of Albion; Allen, of Winslow; and Erlon Jr., of Waterville; sisters, Louise Bellows, and Gloria and Ron Gregory, all of Winslow; sister-in-law, Lois Shores, of Albion; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; son, Donald (Chip) Shores Jr. in 2015; stepmother, Beverly; brothers, Dale, Herbert, and Frederick; great-grandson, Bryce; and his beloved cat, Bozie (Smidge).

Children: David E. and Brittany, and their children, Bailey and Brooklynn; and David T. and Betsy, of Oakland, and their children Dallas and Samantha; the mother of his children, and business partner, Judy Shores; Linda Daigle, of Fairfield Center, and her children Lisa, Larrisa, Laura, Larry and their families; brothers, Manley Shores, Amasa and Danny, all of Albion; Allen, of Winslow; and Erlon Jr., of Waterville; sisters, Louise Bellows, and Gloria and Ron Gregory, all of Winslow; sister-in-law, Lois Shores, of Albion; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

From Judo to football, and rock collecting to meteorology, she found inventive ways to encourage her sons to have the curiosity and courage to try new things. She was always attentive and supportive of her boys, their children, and their friends.

Barbara enjoyed many artistic activities, including painting, jewelry making, and even tried her hand at scrimshaw. Her favorite hobby was cooking, and she had a great passion for trying new recipes.

Barbara was very generous, and often gave away pieces of jewelry she had made, and shared her recipes and was delighted to feed family and friends at every opportunity. If you met her you left with piece of jewelry, a recipe, a full heart and a full belly. No one who met her was ever the same; she taught us all things we will keep with us all our lives. She made everyone feel special.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Milo Leighton and her aunt, Bettina Prior, of Wallingford, Connecticut.

She is survived by sons, Scott Franklin Leighton, of Clinton, and Marc Raymond Leighton and his wife, Tina, of Fairfield; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Zachary, Scott, and Kaylie.

ELLSWORTH E. DAMON

WHITEFIELD––Ellsworth (Ellie) Ernest Damon, of Whitefield, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017, at Togus Hospice. Ellie was born in Greenville, October 5, 1921, to Ernest and Orpha Damon.

When Ellie was a very young child the family moved to the Thayer Road in Whitefield to the house that he called home for the next 90 years. Ellie was an avid gardener and the homestead flourished under his care. He grew apples, plums, blueberries, grapes and a huge garden. His root cellar was always full and the shelves in the basement were well stocked with his preserves. Ellie took pride in growing what he ate, and he loved to eat!

Ellie served his country in the army during WWII. He deployed to the European Theater until the war ended and was in the Army of Occupation after the war. He served in an armored car division as gunner and radio operator.

After the war Ellie went to work in Alaska where he first learned to fly. Ellie continued to fly for many years and owned a Piper J3 that he flew all over the state, landing in fields and snowfields as he never had a pilot’s license. He kept his plane in Dresden at the airfield of the “Flying Farmer” with whom he was great friends.

After his time in Alaska, Ellie worked various jobs, working in the woods and lumber mills, and working for Potters Pots, in Whitefield, making lobster pots. He continued to work in the woods cutting his own firewood his entire life. He was always a few years ahead on firewood and said that it was the key to a long life. At 92 he could still be found out in the woods with his John Deere B and Stihl chainsaw, head down doing what he loved.

Ellie joined the Masons in 1950 and had been a member of the Riverside Lodge #135 in Jefferson for more than 65 years.

In the late 1950s he went to work at the then young Baxter State Park where he worked as the ranger at South Branch Pond. He lived and worked at South Branch for 12 years. He helped cut some of the early trails in the park and there is still a trail there that bears his name.

After leaving Baxter, he worked on the Maine Central Railroad in Rockland where he ran the entire railroad yard. He ran the office, did maintenance on the trains, cleaned cars, greased couplings, you name it, he did it. He worked at the railroad until his retirement.

After retirement Ellie devoted the rest of his long life to the things he truly loved: working in the garden, cutting firewood for himself and others, taking hunting and fishing trips with family and friends. He had many connections around the state and loved to go on road trips with his camper. He was always invited on a moose hunt because he was a great cook as well as great outdoorsman. He loved company and always had visitors, when you visited Ellie there was always someone there with him on the porch or in the living room.

Ellie is survived by his extensive family.
