ALICE B. LESTER

UNITY – Alice Bailey Lester, 87, of Unity, passed on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at home. She enjoyed good health, a loving family, wonderful friends and very special neighbors who were always there for her.

Alice always seemed to work with the public, like at their stores, Lester’s Market, in Troy and Lester’s Trash and Treasures and Bud’s Shop N Save, in Pittsfield. She also worked in the shoe factory and as a crossing guard in Pittsfield.

She is survived by her sisters Marie Penny, of Burnham, and Shirley Prescott, of Tennessee; her children Deborah Walker (Ken Lindsey), of Burnham, Lyn (David) Kuson, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Peter Lester, of Corinna; grandchildren Deana Parsons, of Lecanto, Florida, Josh Lester, of Damascotta, Julie Lester, of Waterville, Jake Lester, of Orono, Aislynn Buzzell, of North Carolina, and Haliegh Martin, of Corinna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Lester, her son Blake Lester and many family members and good friends.

In these recent days it has been a great experience to hear her neighbors, friends and other family members tell their stories about Mom. She was loved by many and sadly missed. There was no funeral and her celebration party was held before this publication.

NANCY V. GAUTHIER

OAKLAND – Nancy V. Gould Warren Gauthier, 78, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018, following years of courageously battling Alzheimer’s Disease. Nancy was born November 28, 1939, the daughter of Charles and Virginia Gould.

She was raised in Oakland along with her four sisters, on the Rice’s Rips Road. Following her 1959 graduation from Williams High, in Oakland, she married her high school sweetheart, John (Jake) Warren, on April 3, 1960. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and Nancy happily moved with him to many locations: Bermuda, Florida, California, Hawaii, Virginia, and Maryland. Together, they raised three children.

After Jake’s retirement from the Navy, Jake and Nancy Warren settled back in Oakland (where they always considered home). Nancy embraced her job as a “cleaning lady” at the Oakland Town Office. She had such fond memories of her years working at the town office with a staff of very special, lifelong friends. Nancy loved to spend her time knitting special projects, spending time with her sisters, attending special family gatherings, and going out to eat. She and Jake shared many wonderful years working and raising their children as residents of Oakland, until his untimely death in 2006 at the age 66.

Nancy was very proud to be recognized as Oakland’s Volunteer of the Year, in 2002. Some of her selfless time recognized was the many hours she donated to the families of Oakland; whether it be the annual Easter egg hunt, Oakland-fest, football spaghetti dinners, or being always ready for any athletic team with her cookies she was so well known for.

In 2011, Nancy married her current husband, Leo Gauthier. They enjoyed a few happy years together and then, Nancy was blessed to have Leo’s constant support and love throughout the very difficult years when Nancy struggled with the disease that ultimately took her life, Alzheimer’s Disease.

Nancy and Jake were the parents of their children: Jeff, Donna and Jody. Nancy is survived by the families of her three children: Jeff and Susie Warren, of Oakland, Donna May, of Findlay, Ohio, and Jody Warren and Arlene Jones, of Oakland. Nancy was also blessed to be a grammy to six grandchildren: Quinn and Emily Warren, Whitney and Daniel May, Davis Warren, and Samantha Briggs; five great-grandchildren: Hunter and Emyrson Savage, and Warren, Ezekeil and Gretchen May; three sisters, Catherine (Kay) and her husband, Bob Furbush, of Oakland, Connie Abbott, of Naples, Florida and Skowhegan, and Charlotte Hughes, of Oakland; many nieces and nephews.

Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Jake Warren, and her sister, Sally Adams of Sarasota, Florida.

FREDERICK D. DUPREY

VASSALBORO––Frederick David Duprey, 70, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018. He was born January 7, 1948, in Howland, to Leonard Duprey Sr. and Rita (Bouchard) Duprey.

Fred served for many years in the U.S. Army, active duty during the Vietnam war. He loved cars and could name any make and model. He enjoyed scratching lottery tickets, watching The Price is Right and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by both his parents; his brothers, Gary, Reggie and Milford; a sister, Alice Mendes; and a grandson, Calvin Galeucia.

He is survived by his daughters: Kimberly Duprey, Tausha Duprey, Candace Allain and husband Eric and Amber Jacobsen and husband Ed; grandchildren Sarah and Allision Galeucia, Ava and Ryleigh Pease, Isabella MacDonald, Max Allain, Jorja Duprey; great–grandson Jude Galeucia; sisters, Erma Blakney, Anna Watson and Phyllis Dumais; brothers Lenny and Leo; many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

There will be a graveside service July 20 at 1 p.m.. at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, followed by a reception at the First Baptist Church, Fairfield, until 6 p.m.

MARILYN D. BRAGG

WINDSOR––Marilyn Dowe Bragg passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018, following a brief battle with cancer. She was born on November 1, 1938.

Marilyn graduated from Erskine Academy in 1957. She worked at the family diner before moving on to Nelson’s Diner in Windsor, serving her famous doughnuts, pies and other wonderful dishes for three decades. Following this she worked at various local restaurants sharing her knowledge of cooking and retired at the age of 77. She cherished her time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, and bingo, and loved doing things for others including donating her knitted hats to local hospitals.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Omar Bragg; four brothers, Richard, Robert, Roger and Ronald Dowe; and a sister, Ruth Hussey.

She is survived by daughters, Brenda Colby, Bonnie Petrone and husband Michael, Jamie Dunn and husband Rod; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Michaela, Adriana, Eric, Baylee and Spencer; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Abigail and Eliana; sisters, Dorothy Burke, Barbara Poulin and Gloria Pinette; several nieces and nephews.

BUTCH BRAULT

BENTON–Butch Brault, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 23, 2018. He was born on May 28, 1954.

Among many other things, Butch was a thoughtful friend, a caring brother, a loving father, and a devoted husband. He was loved by many and he will be greatly missed.

He spent his final days camping with his wife, Wendy Brault, celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary. They were able to watch a beautiful sunset together before he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

He lived a life filled with loving family and caring friends. He has left behind too many to mention, amongst them were his wonderful wife, three daughters, and one son.

He was a sports fanatic with a deep love for the Patriots and the Red Sox; however, he would never say no to watching the Celtics or Bruins play. He loved to fish. He may not have succeeded in teaching his daughters to love fishing the way he did, but he certainly did with his grandsons.

Butch was a role model and friend to so many. He did not was tears of sadness, but rather a camp gathering filled with friends and memories.

MAXINE E. SCRIBNER

FAIRFIELD–Maxine E. Scribner, 86, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018. Maxine was born at home in Wade, on December 3, 1931, to Vernon C. and Harriet (Allen) Campbell.

Maxine was a woman of many talents, including scooping ice cream at the Fairfield Creamery, answering phones for the Waterville Answering Service, and eventually attending Kennebec Valley Community College to become a Certified Nursing Assistant for Colonial Manor. One of Maxine greatest talents was that she could sell an ice cube to an Eskimo whether in your home demonstrating products or at Rossignal’s selling jewelry.

Maxine retired in 1994 but never stopped serving the community because she loved helping people and always said “no problem.” She gave over 25 years to the Girl Scouts as a troop leader, neighborhood consultant, chairman, and trainer for new leaders. Her talent for working with scouts was also tapped to work as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. Maxine served as past Noble Grand of the Rebecca Lodge, in Fairfield, was a member of the Fairfield Senior Citizens, and a Literacy Volunteer. As an active 50 year member of the Fairfield First Baptist Church, Maxine served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Deaconess, and member of various boards. Most notable, she was one of the founders of the Lamb’s Clothes Closet program at the church and worked in it until she went home to be with her Lord.

When Maxine wasn’t volunteering, she enjoyed traveling across the US and Canada and loved spending part of her winter in sunny Arizona. Maxine was dedicated to her personal physical fitness program that she started at the young age of 79 which was an inspiration to many.

Maxine was predeceased by brothers Eugene, Reginald, Niall, and Gilbert, and her sister Thelma Corson.

She is survived by her sons, David, of Fairfield, Kenneth, of Winthrop, and Mark and his partner Marcia Maheu, of Dresden; her daughters, Linda Boyd and husband Dan, of San Antonio, Texas, Eileen Berning and husband Dave, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and Karen Winfree, of Fairfield; grandchildren Robert and Jonathan Dodge, Kirstie Martin and husband Tom, Kristina Scribner, Sarah Scribner and husband Philip Proctor, Andrea Berning, Tony McCaslin, and Kaitlyn Burke and husband Jeremy; five great-grandchildren; brothers Clayton and Dwayne, and sister Wilma Rich; and niece Susan Yeske.

DENNIS W. STRATTON JR.

FAIRFIELD––Dennis W. Stratton Jr., 60, of Fairfield, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018. Dennis was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, on February 1, 1958, to Dennis W. Stratton Sr. and Jeanette Tracy Stratton.

He attended Oakland schools and grew up in Sidney with his four brothers and sisters.

Dennis joined his father working as a logger at a very young age and prided himself in helping to provide for the family and continuing the Stratton legacy. Dennis was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time in the Maine woods. He especially enjoyed passing these hobbies onto his children and grandchildren.

Dennis’ love for his family was evident in all that he did.  As a logger for more than 45 years, Dennis donated countless hours and supplies to families. In the true spirit of kindness and love, no matter a family’s ability to pay, situation in life, or connection, Dennis made sure they had anything they needed, often at his own personal sacrifice of time and cost. Truly there was never a more generous or kind-hearted man who alway put needs second–even after those that many would have considered a stranger. Truth is, Dennis never met a stranger, and his generous nature shone through every smile or laugh he shared and every life he touched. He was best known for popsicles, whip cream face paintings, silly stories and old-time country music.

Dennis was predeceased by his mother, Jeanette Tracy Grivois, of Belgrade; and his daughter, Amber Corey.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Karla Stevens Stratton, of Fairfield; his father, Dennis W. Stratton St., of Sidney; his brothers and sisters, Kathleen Stratton, of Waterville, Shiela Serencha, of Oakland, Charlie Stratton and his partner, Tracy Constable, of Oakland, Henry Stratton and his partner, Cathy Fuller-Nelson, of Palmyra; his seven children and 10 grandchildren: Dennis W. Stratton III and his wife, Lane, and their children, Logan, Luke and Lance, of Waterville, Heather Corey, of Pittsfield, Jennifer McLaughlin and her husband, David, and their son, Elliott, of Bakersfield, California, Basil J. Stratton Sr. and his wife, Raeann, and their children, Basil Jr., Thomas, Reid and Allison, of Fairfield, Chelsea R. PRUDENCE B. GRAY

EAST VASSALBORO––Prudence Bartley Gray, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at the age of 90. She was born in Presque Isle on July 15, 1927, the daughter of Ashton and Arthuretta (Kierstead) Bartley.

Prudence attended elementary school in Westfield, and graduated from Presque Isle
High School. She furthered her education at Washington State Normal School of Machias and graduated from the University of Maine.

During her college years, she met Allen Gray of Wesley, and they married in 1948. Prudence and Allen settled in East Vassalboro where they raised their four children. Prudence taught school in the Presque Isle, Winslow and finally the Waterville school systems when she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Maine State Retired Teachers Association, Vassalboro United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Vassalboro Grange and a lifelong member of the NEA.

Prudence was predeceased by her husband, Allen, in 1994; her son, Gary Gray and his wife, Paula; sisters, Gertrude Hawkins, Theora Porter, Joyce Duncan, Claudette Brewer; brothers, Ashton Ray, Wayne and Albert Bartley.

Prudence is survived by her daughter, Ann Gray Paoletti and husband, Stephen, of Costa Mesa, California; her son, Douglas Gray, of Waterville; her daughter, Lynne Gray, of Vassalboro; grandchildren: Jeremy, Joshua and Erin Gray, Travis Clark and wife, Amy, Sarah Clark and her fiancé, David Gordon; sisters: Irene Tweedie, Donna and husband, Winston Carter, Dolores and husband, Phil Beals, Sharon Madore, Brenda and husband, Raymond Saucier; brother Cary and wife, Judy Bartley; sister-in-law Ann Bartley; brothers-in-law James Gray and Wayne Porter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

DOROTHY A. RIDEOUT

WINSLOW – Dorothy Ann (Markee) Rideout, 81, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at her home in Winslow, 100 feet from the home she was born in built by her father and older brothers. She was born April 24, 1937, in Winslow, the seventh child of William E. and Marjorie L. (Winslow) Markee.

Dot, better known as “Mom” by all of her children’s friends and most the town of Winslow, was educated in Winslow schools and received her GED from Waterville High School in 1968. She held many jobs throughout her working career including: sales person and department manager with the W.T. Grant Company for 19 years, in Virginia, Connecticut and Maine; office assistant in the Winslow school system; admissions clerk at Seton Hospital; activities director for the adult mentally challenged at several residential homes in the area. In 1981, she worked in the tailoring shop at Stern’s Department Store, in Waterville. In 1989, she brought the sewing business into her home where she worked until her retirement.

Dot was an active member of the Pentecostal Churches in Maine, Virginia and Connecticut. She worked with the young people and the choir, was often a soloist at churches and weddings. She was a member of the Calvary Temple Church, in Waterville, more recently attending Getchell Street Baptist Church, in Waterville. She enjoyed spending time with her many family members, especially her grandchildren. She loved gardening, sewing, traveling, and playing card games.

Dot is survived by her five children, Paul William Herman Rideout and his companion, Laury Caron, of New Sharon, Cliff Harry Rideout, of Vermont, Mark David Wayne Rideout and wife Vicki, of Virginia, Daniel Wynn and wife Heather, of Oregon, and Betty Ann Goodale and husband Don, of Benton; 10 grandchildren, Shane Rideout, Jessica Rideout, Marilyn Rideout, Danielle Ciango and husband Jacob, Amy Dominick and husband Frank, Crystal Lee and husband John, Jordan Rideout, Jackson Rideout, Celynn Goodale Smyth, Beau Goodale and wife Jennifer; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dale and wife Nancy, of New Hampshire, James and wife Ivy, of Florida, Thomas and wife Claudette, of Winslow; sisters-in-law, Betty, Ruth, and Gayle; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and eight brothers, Ted, Rodney, Robert, Jerry, Keith, Leonard, Lynn, Ronald and sister, Lorraine Boucher.

A graveside service will be held in late July at the Howard Cemetery, in Winslow. She will be buried beside her beloved parents and grandfather, Henry Markee.

FAIRFIELD – Terry Allen Dodge, 53, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor. He was born November 16, 1964, in Waterville, the son of Charles and Pauline (Hunt) Dodge.

He was a mechanic and enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and racing.

Terry is survived by his son, Terry Dodge Jr. and wife Heather; three brothers, Gary Dodge and wife Sandy, Billy Dodge and wife Terri, Charlie Dodge and wife Frannie; five sisters, Barbara Elliot and husband Danny, Paulette Scott, Charlene Taylor, Lisa Pollard and husband Fred, and Brenda Jones; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Pauline Dodge; three brothers, Dana Dodge, Dennis Dodge, Jimmy Dodge; two sisters, Alfreda Dodge and Dannette Dodge.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 1 p.m., at the Fairview Cemetery, in Canaan. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Spann home at 1355 Main Street, in Clinton.

LYNN R. FRENCH

UNITY  – Lynn Rae (Marks) French of Locust Lane, Unity, died Monday, April 16, 2018, following a brief illness. She was born June 25, 1943, in Gardiner, and was the daughter of Charles F. and Bessie (Russell) Marks.

She attended schools in Randolph and graduated from Gardiner High School. She received an associate of arts degree in liberal arts from Thomas College, in Waterville, and also attended the University of Maine, in Portland.

After college, she worked for Travelers Insurance Company as a claims representative in both Portland and Bangor.

She married her husband, Dan, in 1969, and made great memories at their home on Winnecook Lake with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Mary Louise Smith, of Cumberland Foreside; and brother, Charles F. Marks Jr., of Randolph.

She is survived by her husband, Alton “Dan” French, of Unity; their son, Michael and his wife, Valerie Derosier, also of Unity; stepdaughter, Audrey Bishop and husband, John, of Augusta; and stepson, Andrew French, of Nashville, Tennessee; along with several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her request, a private family burial will be held at a later date.

ELIZABETH G. MORIN

BENTON – Elizabeth G. Morin, 74, of Benton, known to her friends as “Kim”, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Maine Medical Center, in Portland. She was born April 15, 1944, in Darlington, England, to the late Rowland and Grace (Lawson) Poulton.

A military wife, well-traveled and extremely talented; a true master of many talents. Known to most by her passion for sewing, Kim also painted, knitted, and was an excellent baker.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald G. Morin; and her brother, Michael Poulton.

She is survived by three daughters, Tracy Zorichak and husband, Richard, Anita Fomin and husband, Dimitry, and Tina Pryor; a son, David Morin; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her sister, Denise Beacroft and husband, Bernard; and a nephew Stephen.

JOYCE NICHOLS JONES

WASHINGTON  – Joyce Nichols Jones, 77, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018, at Glenridge in Augusta. She was born in West Dummerston, Vermont, on September 29, 1940, to Charles Nichols and Vera (Baker) Nichols.

Joyce was a graduate of Waldoboro High School, class of 1958. She also attended one year of school at the New Brunswick Bible Institution. She drove truck, school buses and was a homemaker.

She attended the South Liberty Baptist Church.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Frank; and brother, James Nichols.

She is survived by sons, Frank E. Jones Jr. (Kathleen), Steven Jones (Penny), James Jones (Toni), and Daniel Jones Sr. (Elaine), all of Washington; daughters, Cynthia Peaslee, of Pittston and Carol Kilbreth (John), of Washington; sisters-in-law, Betty Baker, of Hermon and Phyllis Nichols, of Augusta; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

THERESE M. FORTIER

WINSLOW – Therese M. Fortier, 91, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, following a long illness. Therese was born on May 5, 1927, in St. Come, Canada, the daughter of Mathias and Marie-Anne Belanger (Jacques).

Therese married Antonio Fortier on September 6, 1948, and was blessed to have 61 years together until he passed in 2009.

Therese worked at the C. F. Hathaway Shirt Factory, in Waterville, prior to raising her family. She made many new friends when she opened the area’s first clothing consignment store, “Terry’s Thrift Shop,” on College Avenue, in Waterville. She was an excellent seamstress and kept her young family in the latest fashions as well as her granddaughter’s Barbie and Ken dolls.

Therese was a very loving and caring wife and mother, always putting her family first. She was an outstanding cook, much to the delight of those who attended her Sunday dinners. She also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, and cake decorating.

She was predeceased by her husband, Antonio Fortier; her brothers Stanley and Gregoire Belanger; and her sisters Ann Guillemette and Marguerite Dorin.

She is survived by her three children, Roger Fortier, Elaine and husband Roy Stinneford, and Steven Fortier and wife Brenda; three grandchildren, Ericka and husband David Puccio, Jean-Luc and Danielle Fortier; and one great-grandson, Max Puccio; three brothers: John Belanger and wife Denise, Henry Belanger, and Gerard Belanger and wife Marlene; brothers-in-law, Norman Fortier and Joseph Douin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

BENTON – Delores T. Simpson, 86, passed away on November 11, 2017, following a two-year battle with multiple myloma. She was born in Benton Falls on October 1, 1931, the daughter of Albert and Ruth Thompson.

Delores was a lifetime member of the Fairfield VFW and American Legion. In 2004-05, she was VFW Auxiliary president of the year. Among her hobbies were playing cribbage and was very talented at knitting and crocheting.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd W. Simpson; and older sister Flotie Nordle.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta O. Vaught and her two children Troy and Raven Rusconi, of Clinton; son William J. Simpson and wife Christina Simpson and their daughter Livia I. Simpson, of Brazil; siblings Arthur C. Thompson, of Oakland, and Lois Mary Derapps, of Fairfield; many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held on June 16, 2018, at the Fairfield VFW, Main St. It will be a potluck dinner at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Brown Cemetery, in Benton.

RONALD T. GILBERT

OAKLAND––Ronald Terrence “Terry” Gilbert, 77, of Oakland, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018, following a short illness. He was born in Waterville, April 20, 1941, son of Ronald W. and Thena Sullivan Gilbert.

In his formative years Terry studied music with the renowned Lila (Ma) Atherton. Upon graduating from Williams High School, in Oakland, he studied and was certified as an airline steward. With the love of music still in his heart he entered the Northern Conservatory of Music and graduated with a degree in music education. He also did graduate study in England.

He taught public school music for many years in Hudson, New York, where he had a renowned boys choir. Returning home, he taught music in Fairfield, along with maintaining Musical Trends, where he offered private music lessons in piano, voice, woodwind and brass instruments. His private students presented outstanding recitals each spring at many different venues.

He also worked for a number of years in the mental health field. His loving companions at different times throughout his life were his Chihuahuas.

He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Catherine Bacon and husband, Otis; and two brothers-in-law.

He is survived by three sisters, Beverly Baird Cauley, of Ocala, Florida, Natalie Vogler, of Ocala, Florida, and Sherry Gilbert, of Oakland; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

JOHN POPLASKI III

OAKLAND––John Poplaski III, 52, of Oakland, passed away at his home following a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. John, the son of John Poplaski Jr. and Eugenie “Jean” (Quint) Poplaski, was born February 25, 1966, in Waterville.

John grew up in Fairfield and attended Fairfield schools from 1972–1984. John worked from a very early age in the restaurant industry doing whatever he could to learn about cooking and was a self-taught chef. He was employed by area restaurants over the years such as Chinatown, Governor’s, Steve’s, The Lobster Trap, and most recently, the former John Martin’s Manor Restaurant, Waterville, where he was executive chef. He left The Manor in 2006 after injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident, which prevented him from continuing his career.

He had a great love of many things, cooking, fast cars (he loved his GT Mustangs), his favorite NFL team the Denver Broncos and the Boston Celtics, golfing, rock and roll music, spending time with his family and close friends, barbecuing, his animals and the simple things in life.

John was a very kind, compassionate man. John had quite the sense of humor and knew exactly how to make people laugh. His sense of humor was infectious and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

John was married to Annmarie Cole in August 2002, and even though the marriage ended in divorce in 2009, they remained close friends. For John, his pets were his children.

John was predeceased by his parents, John Poplaski, Jr. and Eugenie “Jean” (Quint) Poplaski.

John is survived by his five siblings: his brother Stephen Poplaski and wife Judy, of Winterport, his sisters Pamela Barker, of Waterville, Bonnie Poplaski and Bruce Harmon, of Benton, Anne Corey and husband David, of China, and Kelley Poplaski and partner Dick Ware, of Oakland; 17 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and nephews; aunt, Estelle Verzoni-Barnes and husband Lou, of Waterville, Ann Theriault, of Liberty, and an uncle Gene Quint and wife Teri, of Hawaii.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 4, at 6 p.m. at the Fairfield Church of the Nazarene, 81 Main St., Fairfield, with the Rev. Eric. M. Larsen officiating. There will be a time of fellowship at the church directly following.

FRANCES G. WILSON

SOUTH CHINA — Frances Gelo Wilson, 85, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Glenridge Comfort Care Unit, in Augusta. Born and raised in Searsmont, the daughter of Clarence and Alice (White) Gelo, she was a 1949 graduate from Appleton High School.

She was first married to Frank Wilson September 12, 1953. Together they raised two children and later in life they legally adopted two more children. While married to Frank, she was an active member of Kora Karts Women’s Auxillary. She worked for a short period of time waitressing at the Worster House, in Hallowell. Following that she began working for Wadleighs Oil Co. and after 40 years of service, she retired in 2004. She got re-married to Edwin Geschwendt on July 6, 1991, and together they ran a trucking business. In her early years, she enjoyed riding a motorcycle, snowmobiling and camping up in Moosehead. She had a passion for cooking and looked forward to holiday gatherings and summer cookouts with her family.

She is survived by her partner of 27 years, Edwin Geschwendt; daughters Diane Trueworthy and husband David, of Lewiston, and Sheila (Taul) Ballantyne and husband David Ballantyne, of China, son John Taul, of Augusta; a granddaughter Andrea Dwelle and husband Chris, of Augusta; grandsons, Abram Ashby, and Justin Ashby, both of Winslow, Ian Ashby and wife Joanna, of Hallowell, Shane Wilson and wife Meagan, of Clinton; as well as several great grandchildren; a brother Bruce Gelo and wife Dawn, of Kenduskeag; a sister Carol Robbins and husband Jenness, of Searsmont; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son David Wilson, two brothers Carl Gelo and Raymond Gelo; sisters Elaine Perkins, Nancy Drinkwater, Phyllis Perkins and Priscilla Place.

Per her request there will be no funeral or burial services. There will be a gathering in her remembrance at a later date.

LILLIAN MCGLASHING JOHANNES

FAIRFIELD – Lillian McGlash­ing Johannes passed away on April 13, 2018, at Gray Birch, in Augusta. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 21, 1926, the daughter of the late Frank and Christine (Lundquist) McGlashing.

As a young girl, she waitressed at the old Belgrade Hotel, and shared many comical stories of her young life. She worked at Squires Meat, M.M. Madys, and Necco Candy, in Massachusetts. She eventually returned to Maine.

Lillian had a very long and productive life. She loved spending time with her sisters, shopping, eating out, and playing cards. She made many afghans throughout the years.

She was very proud of having the legs of a dancer. Lillian had no children of her own, but she was a foster mother for several years. She was a member of Eastern Star Fireside Chapter #103 in Clinton.

Lillian was predeceased by her brothers: Roy (Madeline), Elwood (Ann), Francis (Viola), Walter (Dotty), and John (Nellie); her sisters: Evelyn Corderlo (Joe) Dorothy Stratton (Wally), and Jennie Stratton (Bill); and many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by three nieces, Gail Wilcox, Tina Stratton and Sheryl Richard, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters and brothers-in-law from her husband’s side.

RAYMOND LIBERTY

WINSLOW––Raymond A. Liberty, 79, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in Waterville. He was born in Waterville on September 19, 1938, the son of Romeo and Doris (Cote) Liberty.

Ray graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1957, where he excelled at football, and remained a Bulldogs fan all of his life.

He started his career working at both the Waterville Morning Sentinel and the U.S. Postal Service. In 1965, he began working for United Parcel Service as a driver, eventually working his way up to division manager of New England, where he retired.

Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and had the ability to build and renovate anything. He loved stained glass, making many beautiful pieces which will be enjoyed for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Lucille (Nadeau) Liberty in 2000; he remarried Alice Zebrof, who passed away in 2014; brothers, Romeo Liberty, Richard Liberty, Ronnie Liberty; and his sisters, Gloria Goldberg and Theresa Bolduc.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Jane McIntosh, of China; his son, Steve Liberty, of Belgrade; grandchildren: Benjamin McPherson and his wife, Stephanie; Lauren McPherson; Cameron McIntosh; Ashley Leppe and her husband, Jose; and Jackson Liberty; great-grandchildren: Wesley and Addison McPherson, and Annabella and Anniston Leppe; brother, Robert (Gene) liberty and his wife, Cathy; and many nieces and nephews.

LOUISE M. CHARITY

BENTON––Louise M. Charity, 87, a lifelong resident of Benton, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Louise was born on May 3, 1930, the daughter of Ralph and Sadie (Spencer) Crosby.

She graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1948. She married Richard A. (Chic) Charity, Sr., on December 24, 1949; they were married for 54 years, until the time of his death.

Louise enjoyed raising flowers and gardening. She was well known for her icicle and dill pickles, as well as for her preserving and baking. Louise enjoyed cooking with her grandchildren, and welcomed little fingers into her favorite ‘dough bowl.’ She was thoughtful of her neighbors, and would deliver baked goods and casseroles to friends who were ill or in need.

Louise had many other talents as well. She crocheted afghans for family members, made pillows, enjoyed embroidery, sewing, and made her own wreaths. She also loved music, singing, and taught herself to play the guitar. She enjoyed family gatherings that included singalongs, camping, and bonfires. She loved holidays, and made each birthday a special celebration for her children and grandchildren. Chic and Louise enjoyed dancing together on Saturday nights, and were especially well known for their skill in dancing the jitterbug.

Louise retired from J C Penney, in Waterville, where she enjoyed working for many years. She worked previously at a butcher shop, a shoe store, a greenhouse, and in the pickle factory, which had been located along the banks of the Sebasticook River, in Benton. She also worked at West’s Variety, in Benton, and enjoyed seeing the success of her family members, who owned the store. She enjoyed membership at the Benton Falls Congregational Church, working on the church suppers.

Louise was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Sadie Crosby; husband, Richard A. Charity, Sr.; siblings, Delbert Crosby, Leah Maxwell, Nellie Alexander, and Jean Crosby; niece, Cindy (Crosby) Wolfe; and nephew, Gary MacKnight.Surviving are sister, Linda Crosby; her daughters, Cheryl Seamans and husband Steve, of Athens,, Terry Hall and her partner Doug, of Albion, and son Richard Charity, Jr. and wife Jacki, of Benton; grandchildren, Desirae Stowe, Darcee Skidgell, Brandon Hall, Sarah Obare, Hannah Seamans, Ami Newell, and Richard Charity III; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Stowe, Demika Stowe, Ayla Skidgell, Wyatt Skidgell, Lydia Skidgell, Isaak Muse, Maddox Obare, Matteo Rodriguez, Ayden Newell, Brady Newell, Crosby Newell, and Clara Charity; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

BONNIE L. DIXON

FAIRFIELD––Bonnie Lynne Dixon, 65, of Fairfield, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, following a brief battle with lung cancer. Bonnie was born on February 26, 1953, in Fairfield, the daughter of Albert Ole Dixon and Marion (Ames) Bailey.

Bonnie graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1971. Following graduation, Bonnie worked at Scott Paper Co., in Winslow, until the closing in 1997. Bonnie had many co-conspirators at Scott Paper, many of whom came to visit her during her brief illness.

After the closing of the mill, Bonnie went to school to be a certified nursing assistant and spent just over 12 years working at the Togus VA Hospital, where she had many accomplices whom she remained close to after her well-deserved and eagerly anticipated retirement in March 2015.

Bonnie was a proud mother and grandmother, who bragged about her family to everyone she knew. She was affectionately known as “Haha” to her three grandchildren, and she loved spoiling them and showering them with gifts.

She loved movies, and enjoyed watching her large collection of movies on her giant outdoor screen with friends and family.

Halloween was her favorite time of the year, and she spent the month enjoying her favorite horror and paranormal movies, and sharing them with her children and grandchildren. Bonnie had a unique sense of humor that made people enjoy every minute they spent with her.

She was predeceased by her father Albert Dixon Sr., and mother, Marion (Ames) Bailey.

Bonnie is survived by her two daughters, Nikkia Finnemore and husband, Matthew, of Fairfield, and Krystal Dixon, of Salem, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Melissa, Benjamin, and Kristopher Finnemore; sister, Sandra Doyon, of Winslow; brother, Albert Dixon Jr., of Norridgewock.

PRISCILLA M. HATCH

SOUTH CHINA––Priscilla M. Hatch, 92, of South China, formerly of South Jefferson, died Monday, April 23, 2018, at Country Manor Nursing Home, Whitefield, following a long illness. Priscilla was born on July 3, 1926, the daughter of Sewall Waltz and Irene (Robinson) Waltz. She was always proud to say she was the oldest of their 11 children.

She grew up in Damariscotta Mills and attended local schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy class of 1945. On May 17, 1945, she married Richard L. Hatch and moved to the Hatch family farm in Jefferson where they raised their two children Roger and Bonnie.

Priscilla worked for Senters Department Store and other various brief part time jobs in the community but was most proud to say she was the first clerk hired by R. H. Reny when he opened his first store in Damariscotta. She was a hard worker and spent most of her life at the homestead raising and selling vegetables with her husband and helping raise her grandchildren. Priscilla’s hobbies included flower gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking, and having most likely the largest collection of skunks in the state.

Priscilla was predeceased by husband Richard; son, Roger A. Hatch; daughter-i-law, Carolyn Hatch; and siblings, Carroll Waltz, Henry Waltz, Aubrey “Hoopie” Waltz, Judy Campbell, and Gloria Phillips.

She is survived by daughter Bonnie Ames and son-in-law William Ames, of Florida and Pemaquid; granddaughters, Jenna Verney and partner Norman Black, of South China, Katrina Hatch Guptill, of Jefferson, Penelope Hatch and partner Josh Donahue, of Somerville; grandson, Richard E. JOY JONES

FAIRFIELD – On Thursday, May 3, 2018, Joy Jones, 80, passed away. She was born on April 11, 1938, to Val Simpson.

She was raised by her grandmother Eva, in Waterville, and was educated in the Waterville schools.

On September 21 she married Dana Jones. He was as quiet as she was not. This union took their family and friends by surprise.

Joy worked at Scotty’s Pizza, in Waterville, for many years. She also worked in food service at the Waterville hospitals.

She was well known for her sassy wit and smile. Fun little fact, she had her motorcycle license. She was a survivor of breast cancer and would tell you all about it.

She was affectionately called “a one-eyed T. rex” by her family, because of breaking both shoulders on two different occasions, then poorly healing, leading to lack of mobility. Her many falls lead to many emergency room visits, where her sassy wit would make the staff laugh–even with her two black eyes that made her look like the Hamburglar. She was loved by all who stepped in her life, and will be greatly missed by her family.

She was predeceased by her mother; brother; grandmother; and grandson,l Dana Christopher, in 1985. And just recently, by her sister-in-law, Althea Nutt West.

She is survived by her son, Dana R. Jones and fiancé, Valerie Burton; her daughter, Jodi L. McGlashing and her husband, Bob; grandchildren: Melissa, Andrew, Danielle, Devin and Hannah; great-grandchildren Taryn, Brandon, and Aadan; also by her sister, who just found her 15 years ago, Judy Soucier; the three “Ps”, her cousins, Patty, Paula and Pam, many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

GEORGE A. SWEATT JR.

ALBION––George Arley Sweatt Jr., 79, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018. George was born in Columbia, New Hampshire, on June 1, 1938. He was the son of George A. Sweatt Sr. and Ethel G. Wheelock.

George graduated from Penacook High School in Penacook, New Hampshire, in 1957.

In 1960, George married the former Penelope Sawyer, in York. George was then drafted into the U.S. Army, where he spent time in Georgia before moving home to Portsmouth to raise a family. In 1975, the family moved to Maine to live and build a home.

He operated equipment, and owned George’s Auto Sales, in Waterville. George had a passion for cars and racing. He enjoyed watching his family race, and spent time at home working on his vehicles.

He is survived by his wife, Penny, of 57 years; sisters, Dorothy, Helen and Annette; brothers, Arthur and Mike; his children, George Sweatt III (fiancé Jennifer Leary) and his children, Melissa and Andrew; Daren Sweatt and his children, Ryan and Meghan; Brian Sweatt (wife Belinda) and his children, Spencer and Devon Raie; Jennifer Buck (husband Jason) and their children, Jordan, Sydney, and Brady; two great-grandchildren, Brynn and Sully; and many nieces and nephews.

MAVEL M. BRAGG

OAKLAND––Mavel M. Bragg, 77, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, May 3, 2018. Mavel was born on September 2, 1940, in Waterville, to Hermon and Pauline (Parentiss) Bragg.

He was a Maine Guide, and worked in the woods most of his life. Mavel loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He also loved feeding the squirrels and birds around the house.

Mavel was predeceased by his mother Pauline Prentiss; and his father Hermon Bragg.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Bragg; two children, Stacey Bragg and Billy-Jo Bragg; three stepchildren: T. J, Tony, and Misty Bernarda; many grandchildren; sister, Carleen Miller; brother, Grover Bragg; and he will be sadly missed by a special nephew, Grover “Duny” Bragg Jr.

MATTHEW J. COTE

OAKLAND––Matthew Joseph Cote, 33, of Oakland passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Matt was born on May 18, 1984, in Lewiston, the biological son of Eileen (McRae) Cote and Joseph “Dana” Cote.

Matt graduated from Messalonskee High School, in Oakland, in 2003, where he was a high school football player. He attended Springfield College and recently returned to school to finish his degree.

Matt was passive, sweet, funny, and giving. He will be remembered for his hard work ethic, and provided with everything he had to support his family. He was always there to lend a hand for anyone. Matt was a production supervisor at Huhtamaki, in Waterville, at the time of his death, where he was a highly respected employee.

On October 4, 2014, Matt married the former Jessica Corson. His entire world revolved around his wife and his children who he adored beyond words, son Elijah (2-1/2) and baby daughter Emma ( 6 weeks). Matt was an amazing husband and father. Matt was especially proud of his brother, Josh Cote, fondly referred to as “Little Cote”.

Matt enjoyed camping, fishing, kayaking hunting, golfing, gaming, wrestling with Elijah and beer.

Matt was predeceased by his biological parents, Joseph and Eileen Cote; his sister, Heather Cote, and his brother, Zachary McRae.

Matt is survived by his wife, Jessie Cote, and their two children, Elijah and Emma, all of Oakland; his brother Joshua Cote, wife April and niece Charley Loo, of Clayton, North Carolina; his parents, Michelle McRae and her partner, Pete Silva, of Oakland, and Michael McRae and his partner Sue Berube, of Sabattus; his mother and father-in-law, Jeff and Rita Corson, of Skowhegan; his sister-in-law, Nikki Pratt and husband Lee, niece and nephew Colby and Maci, of Gorham; biologically cousins, Caitlyn Gallagher and Shaughnessy Robitaille were his little sisters; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

UNITY––Frank Lewis Tozier, Sr., 89, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta, where he had been living for the past two years. Frank was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on February 28, 1929, to Kenneth and Evelyn (McGrath) Tozier, Sr.

He spent his first 40 years living in Unity, and the next 37 years in Palmetto, Florida.

He attended Unity Grammar School and graduated from Unity High School. Frank served in the US Army from 1946 to 1948, and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. While in Maine he worked with his father, Kenneth, running the family business–Tozier;s Spray Service.

He was predeceased by his son Frank Tozier, Jr.

He is survived by his son Craig Tozier and wife Jennifer, of Unity; daughter-in-law Kim Tozier, of Hartland; his grandchildren: Landon Tozier, Travis Tozier, Chad Tozier, Jordan Tozier, Justin Tozier and their families; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Marilyn Tozier Owen, and her long-time companion Kenneth Phelps who resides in Largo, Florida.

He worked as a maintenance person at Shaw’s Supermarket, Thomas College, both in Waterville, and Northeast Laboratory, in Winslow. Locally, he is survived by a son, Matthew Woodard, of Waterville, and brother Dan Breingan and wife Laura, of Fairfield.
