CARMEN B. WELCH

WINSLOW––Carmen Begin Welch, 69, of Winslow, passed away at home Saturday, May 6, 2017. She was born in Lewiston, the daughter of Leopold and Yvette Begin.

Carmen graduated from Lewiston High School, and then went on to earn an associate degree from Bliss College as the first in her family to obtain a college education. She started her working career in Lewiston at Central Maine Power Co. and worked a number of years at SAPPI’s Somerset Mill, in Hinckley, in the purchasing department. She then spent many years at International Paper, Augusta, (Woodlands Division) in the human resources department. After graduating with a bachelor of science in business administration from Husson College, in Bangor, she was promoted to human resources manager. Carmen was an asset in her role at IP, as her ability to communicate in fluent French was helpful with some of the border regions where she worked. When IP closed the Northeast Division, she then finished her human resource career at the state of Maine, Natural Resources Service Center, retiring in 2012 after 30 years of service in human resources.

Carmen married Robert Welch in 1972, in Lewiston, and resided in Winslow for 40 years. Carmen loved music, particularly playing the lap steel guitar, a joy perfected since the age of eight years old. She also played acoustic guitar, harmonica, ukulele and piano, all self-taught. She played music with her family and as part of a group on weekly visits to nursing homes. She also enjoyed spending summers on the lake with family, painting, wood carving and gardening. She could do anything to which she put her mind. She loved animals, especially cats, and traveling near and far with her family and friends.

Carmen was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be remembered for her kind and beautiful heart, witty sense of humor, and exceptional musical and artistic talents. She was quick with a kind word or joke, and was always conscious of the wellbeing of others. Carmen was a communicant at St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow.

Carmen is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert Welch; two sons Eric Welch and Daniel Welch; daughter Kristine Welch Taylor; her two brothers Larry Begin and Conrad Begin; two sisters Anne (Begin) Tetreault and Claire (Begin) Amero; two grandsons, Brodee and Beckett Welch; and many nieces and nephews.

BARBARA A. LEIGHTON

FAIRFIELD––Barbara Ann Appleton Leighton, 83, of Fairfield, passed away, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at home. Barbara was born January 3, 1934, in Barre, Vermont, to Vivian Lillian Cleora Dodge Appleton and William Raymond Appleton.

She grew up in West Newbury, Vermont, and graduated high school among a class of only nine students. She attended University of Vermont School of Nursing, where she graduated with a B.S.N. in 1956. Barbara worked in pediatric nursing at hospitals in California, New York, and Waterville, including Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, U.C.L.A. Medical Center, Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, and Sisters Hospital in Waterville from 1956 until 1971, and taught nursing from 1972 until her retirement in 1978.

Barbara married Franklin Milo Leighton on April 14, 1963. The couple moved to Fairfield where they raised their sons and lived the rest of their lives. Barbara was a dedicated, creative, innovative mother and grandmother, and encouraged her sons to explore any subject that interested them. From Judo to football, and rock collecting to meteorology, she found inventive ways to encourage her sons to have the curiosity and courage to try new things. She was always attentive and supportive of her boys, their children, and their friends.

Barbara enjoyed many artistic activities, including painting, jewelry making, and even tried her hand at scrimshaw. Her favorite hobby was cooking, and she had a great passion for trying new recipes.

Barbara was very generous, and often gave away pieces of jewelry she had made, and shared her recipes and was delighted to feed family and friends at every opportunity. If you met her you left with piece of jewelry, a recipe, a full heart and a full belly. No one who met her was ever the same; she taught us all things we will keep with us all our lives. She made everyone feel special.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Milo Leighton and her aunt, Bettina Prior, of Wallingford, Connecticut.

She is survived by sons, Scott Franklin Leighton, of Clinton, and Marc Raymond Leighton and his wife, Tina, of Fairfield; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Zachary, Scott, and Kaylie.

JOHN SCATES

PALERMO – John Scates, 89, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta. He was born in Palermo on November 5, 1927, to the late Clifford E. and Laura R. (Bourassa) Scates.

John was a graduate of Erskine Academy, in China, class of 1946. The next morning, he left for the Air Force. He took his first training at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. He went to Biloxi, Mississippi, for A&E mechanics school. He spent service time in California then left from Washing­ton State for Alaska on a ship that was built at Bath Iron Works. That always meant a lot to him. He was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, as well as Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands. He was crew chief on an H 5 Sikorsky helicopter in the Air and Sea Rescue Unit. Upon his father’s death back in Maine in January 1949, John was transferred to Westover Air Force Base, in Massachusetts. His position there was fueling the bombers in support of the Berlin Airlift in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in June 1949.

In 1950, John married the former Jeannette A. Wood. They have been married 66 glorious years.

John worked at Densmore Store, in Branch Mills, North Vassalboro, Woolen Mill and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in the experimental testing unit in East Hartford, Connecticut. Upon his return to Maine in 1956, he worked at Hallowell and Webb in Augusta and for the state of Maine, Department of Transportation as a mechanic, retiring in 1982.

John will be remembered for his love of family, kindness, and gentleness to all young people. He loved music, singing, playing his guitar, the Windsor Historical Society, hunting, fishing, attending Palermo Christian Church, camping, the Red Sox, gardening, eating out and a hot cup of coffee from Tobey’s Grocery. Anyone who knew him knew he was a great joke teller. He anxiously awaited each issue of the Reader’s Digest for fresh material.

John was predeceased by his sister, Juanita Rines, her husband Joseph and a nephew Jack Rines.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeannette (Wood) Scates; his children: Kerry and Deborah Scates, Rudy Scates and AJ Dinkins, Linda and Tom Vigue and Dennis and Tracy Scates. seven grandchildren: Derek and Liz Scates, Jennie and Steve Williams, Andrew and Renée Scates, Sarah and Steve Finley, Brian Vigue, Peter Misiura, Cassie Scates and Shyler Scates; three great-grandchildren: Katherine, Steven and Victoria Williams; brother-in-law Allen Wood and his wife Gloria; a nephew Joseph Rines and wife Mary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.

REV. MONSIGNOR ROBERT G. LAVOIE, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Manor, in Portland. The Monsignor served for 12 years at St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow. Following his retirement in 2007, he resided at Mount St. Joseph Home, in Waterville. During his retirement he helped out with weekend Masses in many area churches.

IRENE A. POTTER

WHITEFIELD––Irene Adell Potter, 82, passed away in her sleep Sunday, April 23, 2017. Irene was born on June 15 , 1934, in Readfield Depot, to Ruth and Wesley Adell.

She graduated from Kents Hill School in 1953.

Irene worked for many years at HP Hood, the Readfield Town Office, and retired from Mitchell and Davis law firm in 1997.

Irene and her husband, Jack Clarke, owned and operated Clarke Transport from the mid 1970s until the early 1990s with Jack’s untimely passing in 1981 from cancer.

Irene married Hubert Potter, her high school sweetheart, in 1999. They enjoyed many years together gardening, attending car shows and spending time with family and friends until Hubert’s passing in 2008. In her later years, Irene enjoyed watching the many birds and squirrels at her window birdfeeder, the deer, turkeys and even the ground hogs that lived on her property. She was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast, enjoyed knitting and watching “her shows” and loved her beautiful flower gardens, especially the garden she had planted in honor of her aunt Mildred.

Irene is survived by her son, Wayne Whitman and his wife, Kim, of Readfield; sister, Evelyn Potter, of Readfield; nieces Sandi Potter Clarke and Dale Potter Clarke; stepdaughter, Tonya Ballard and husband Tom, of Morrill; stepson, Dorian Potter; grandchildren, Laura and Justin Lamport, Jake, Sam and Hannah Whitman, Michael Ballard and Meghan Pittis; as well as two great-granddaughters.

GERALDINE R. BRACKETT

SOUTH CHINA–––Geraldine Richardson Brackett, 92, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at home in South China. She was born October 7, 1924, in North Monmouth, the first of five daughters of Jesse A. and Evelyn Jordan Richardson.

Gerry graduated from North Monmouth Academy and received her B.S. degree in teaching from Farmington State Teachers College. Teaching was her passion and she touched the lives of many young people during her 47 year career.

She started teaching in a one room school house in Sandy River Plantation, taught many grades in Rangeley and Auburn and finished at Weare Baptist Christian School after her official retirement.

She married Reynold C. Brackett (Pen) on July 12, 1946, and together they had three children, Nancy, Mark and Hope. One of their greatest sorrows was the loss of Nancy too early in 1976. They resided in Rangeley until their retirement when they moved to their dream home in Henniker, New Hampshire. They were happily married for 44 years until Pen’s death in July, 1990. At 73, she built a new home she loved in Loudon, New Hampshire, where she lived until she moved to South China to be with her daughter.

Wherever Gerry lived she made wonderful lasting friendships from work, church and other organizations. She was caring and generous with her time and resources. She would offer her home for Bible studies, meals and gatherings. Many had the opportunity to taste her fabulous cooking.

She had many interests including cooking, gardening and traveling whenever she had the opportunity. She especially loved trips with family in their camper. She loved the ocean, lighthouses, loons, cardinals and flowers. Gerry had a strong faith and was very active in church activities in each community in which she lived. She was a member of the Rangeley Free Baptist church, the Weare Baptist Church and the Landmark Baptist Church, in Loudon. She volunteered for the John O. Cates van in Loudon, New Hampshire, where she made a difference by assisting with transporting local residents. She was a life-long member of the NEA & ßßMEA teachers associations. In her retirement she enjoyed the Loudon Young at Heart group and had many happy memories of their excursions and events.

Gerry was predeceased by her husband Pen; daughter Nancy Dunham; sisters, Janice Doyan, Jean Brackett and Pauline Gove.

She will be sadly missed by her son Mark and wife Anne and children Zachary, Bethany, Nancy and Taylor, of Pembroke, New Hampshire; daughter Hope and husband Nelson Pendexter, of South China, and their children, Rebecca Viola and husband Joe, of Gardiner, Katrina Herrick and husband Charlie, of Damriscotta and Crystal Scott and husband Gary, of Monmouth; grandson Cliff Dunham and wife Maghean and daughter Erin, of Topsham; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one grand-niece; sister JoAnne Ricker, of Waterville.

A graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley, on June 10 at 1:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at Parkside and Main in downtown Rangeley.

DEBRA–JO JACQUES

FAIRFIELD––Debra-Jo “Deb” (Levesque) Jacques, 56, of Fairfield, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Maine­General Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born July 23, 1960, in Waterville, the daughter of David and Lillian (Lagueux) Levesque.

She owned and operated her own business for 10 years, Tweetie’s Nest Day Care, as she loved kids.

Deb loved the outdoors and going camping and fishing with her husband, siblings, and friends. She loved people and would always make herself available to them in times of need. Deb was a great cook and loved to make special dishes for her husband and family.

She was predeceased by her father, David Levesque; father-in-law, Richard Jacques; and mother-in-law, Germaine (Michaud) Jacques.

Deb is survived by her husband of 21 years, Mark Jacques, of Fairfield; two sons, Alex Jacques, of Fairfield, and David Fredette, of St. Lucie, Florida; daughter, Heather Boccella, of Austin, Texas; several grandchildren; mother, Lillian (Lagueux) Levesque, of Ft. JANE A. CORMIER

FAIRFIELD––Jane Arlene (Cunha) Cormier, 56, of Fairfield, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Jane was born on September 21, 1960, in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of four.
Jane had a strong personality and a bright smile that could light up a room. She was an avid reader and a formidable triva opponent, an engaging teller of jokes and stories.

Jane loved all animals, even bats, and she was loved by them in return (except the bat––it bit her). She fell in love with the Maine wilderness and spent much of her time hiking, camping, and foraging. She considered herself fortunate to have escaped the city and was always grateful for the wild beauty of Maine that she was able to experience.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ruth (Martin) Cunha.

She leaves behind Bill Annis, her partner of 20 years, and his family, Bill and Jane Annis, who were like parents to Jane, and Lisa (Annis) Hood, whom Jane considered a sister. Jane is also survived by her daughter, Angela Agganis; her brother Joseph Cunha; sisters Sandy (Cunha) Chadwick and Diane (Cunha) Agganis; and three stepsons, David, Jason and Matthew Annis.

JEANNETTE CARON

WINSLOW––Jeannette “Junn” Caron, 86, of Winslow, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Junn was born on March 23, 1931, in Madison, the youngest of three daughters, to Marcien and Melina Cormier.

She attended and graduated from Mount Merci Academy in Waterville, along with her sisters Bernadette and Yvonne. She went on to attend Thomas College and Colby College, both in Waterville.

On January 2, 1954, she married Richard “Duke” Caron, of Waterville. They were married 55 years before Duke passed away from cancer in 2009.

Junn stayed home to raise their three children, Lynn, Ray and Cathy, and once they were in school she started teaching at Notre Dame Catholic School, in Waterville, and taught for many years. She was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, in Waterville, for many years.

In 1971, the family moved to Winslow, where she began working at Laverdiere’s Drug Store office in Winslow, and became members of the St. John Catholic Church family, in Winslow.

She is warmly remembered for her volunteer work for the St. John Parish Christmas Fairs where she made wreaths and many delicious baked goods and her famous tourtiere pies. For many years she also baby sat children during some of the masses and loved reading to them.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Heather; and her sisters, Yvonne Packard and Bernadette “Bunny” Jutras. Junn is survived by her three children, Lynn Caron and her husband, John Scofield, of Orono, Ray Caron and his wife Holly, of Winslow, and Catherine Nadeau and her husband Bob, of Winslow; grandchildren, Marci and Connor Scofield, Katelyn Caron Wheeler, James Nadeau, and Vicki Nadeau.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Winslow.

PAULA P. GRAY

EAST VASSALBORO––Paula Paoletti Gray, 64, of East Vassalboro, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on Saturday, April 8, 2017. She was born in Bangor, on September 17, 1952, to Martha (Pelkey) and Raymond Paoletti, of East Millinocket.

She was a longtime employee of both L.L. Bean and North Country Rivers, but most people in East Vassalboro will remember her from her many years working at the town’s corner store and local post office.

She always enjoyed engaging with her customers, learning a little about their lives, and bringing a little extra joy to their days.

She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Gary. Together they had three children: Jeremy, of East Vassalboro, Joshua, of Oakland, California, and Erin, of East Vassalboro, who survive her. She is also survived by her four siblings, Stephen and his wife Ann, of Costa Mesa, California, Karen and husband Mickey, of Hudson, New Hampshire, Thomas and wife Ellen, of Gilford, Connecticut, and Frankie and his husband Jim, of Phoenix, Arizona; her mother-in-law Prudence; sister-in-law Lynne; brother-in-law Doug; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews.

JEFFREY T. MCCORMICK

WHITEFIELD––Jeffrey T. McCormick, 43, passed away on April 8, 2017.

Jeff was an honest, quiet, kind, sincere, and private man. His incredible sense of humor made many people smile and laugh which he was always quick to do himself. It was the sparkle in his eyes and the sound of his voice that will never be forgotten. He was never one in a million, but one of a kind.

Jeff was recently predeceased by his mother, Lillian.

He is survived by his father, Richard; Bobbi, his girlfriend of 15 years; sisters Kelly and Becky; and nieces and nephews Gavin, Ava, Ellie, and Tucker.

Jeff gave the world 43 years and leaves it changed for the better through everyone he came in contact with. Please remember the sparkle in his eyes.

JOHN J. SHAW

FAIRFIELD––John J. Shaw died on Saturday, April 8, 2017, from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). John was born in Anaconda, Montana, to Dorothy and Conde Shaw; but he found his true home when his father bought The Big Chief Motel, in Missoula, Montana. He spent most of his younger years there.

John became a journeyman sheetmetal worker in 1970 as a member of Local Union No. 103. After years of perfecting his craft, he became an installation supervisor for paper machine air systems, first for Midland Ross and then for Enerquin Air. His profession took him to many parts of the United States, Canada, and Australia.

After retirement, he pursued the things he enjoyed most. He was a talented craftsman who could do anything he put his mind to. He spent his time remodeling, grilling, working with stained glass, feeding the birds, and becoming a first class househusband.

John was predeceased by his mother and father and his sister Connie Morasch.

He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Debra Knese; his brother Michael Shaw and wife Joni Harder; sister Mary Hyde and husband Terry; his sisters and brothers-in-law Shirley and Bruce Weis and Karen and David Schoenberg, and sister-in-law Mary Pramann; along with many nieces and nephews.

NORMAN B. QUIRION

WINSLOW––Norman B. Quirion, 85, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Lakewood Manor, in Waterville. He was born in Winslow, on November 1, 1931, the son of Josephat and Hanna (Veilleux) Quirion.
Norman was a Winslow High School graduate and attended classes at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He was a former police officer and detective working for the ßWaterville Police Department for over 18 years, and also worked briefly as an officer for the Winslow Police Department.

He was a 3rd Degree member of Holy Spirit Council #13486 Knights of Columbus, of Waterville.

Norman was predeceased by his first wife, Geraldine (Dionne) Quirion, in 2004; his son, Stephen P. Quirion, in 2010; two brothers, Robert and Gerard Quirion; a sister, Viola Quirion; and his two mothers-in-law, Adele Dionne and Harriet Morris.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary Louise (Morris) Tremblay, of Winslow; two sons, Daniel Quirion and wife Lynda, of Winslow, and Timothy Quirion and wife Cheryl, of Randolph; two daughters, Terry Ann Hebert and husband Richard, of Fairfield, and Patricia Young and husband Michael, of Presque Isle; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Tremblay, of Virginia; his grandchildren, Amy and Matthew Alaimo, Matthew and Racheal Ceban, Bradley and Kaitland, of Canada, Allison Young, of Massachusetts, Justin Quirion, of Winslow, Jared Quirion and companion Mallorrie Nadeau, and Trevor Quirion and Marisa Quirion, both of Randolph; four great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Quirion, of Virginia; and one sister, Collette Lachance, of Winslow.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass o f Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Notre Dame Church in Waterville. Committal prayers and burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, in Waterville, with a luncheon to follow at Notre Dame church hall.

DOROTHY A. BURNS

SOUTH CHINA––Dorothy A. Burns, 81, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at her home following a long illness. She was born in Augusta on January 30, 1936, the daughter of the late Noble and Mabel G. (Grier) Rodgers.

Mrs. Burns attended Augusta schools, and attended St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church for many years.

She had been employed by Statler Tissue for 17 years and later she was a self-employed house cleaner. Previously, she worked at Yale Motor Inn in Connecticut.

Dot enjoyed riding motorcycles, country music, custom automobile shows and was a regular at Denny’s where she could be found in booth 24.

Mrs. Burns was predeceased by three brothers, Kenny and Bobby Rodgers and Raymond Watts; and two sisters Gladys Libby and Marie Provencal.

Maurice served as director of pharmacy at Waterville Osteopathic Hospital, in Waterville, until 1985. While residing in the area, he performed with the Kennebec Valley Chordsmen, a barbershop chorus.

BENTON – Alice Alexander, 92 passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Oak Grove Nursing Home, in Waterville. She was born May 14, 1924, in Freedom, the daughter of William and Elsie (Harrison) Tyler.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting, also her fishing, camping and snowmobiling trip with friends. Many trip to Florida with Bev, Danny and family. She also loved her Sunday Family rides.

Alice was a member of the Benton Falls Congregational Church, She worked on many church suppers and was a Sunday School teacher. After her family was grown, she worked at Lipman Hatchery, in Winslow.

She is survived by daughters Mary Shibles and husband Richard, of Benton, Beverly Witham, of Bonita Springs Florida, Hazel Eames husband Fred, of Winslow; son Richard Alexander and wife Julie, of Benton; sister Ella Dooley, of Bangor; cousin Irvin Tyler; sister-in-law Helen Alexander. eight grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her roommate Peggy, and a daily visitor Charlie Qumiby.

OAKLAND – Byron M. Dodge, 79, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Inland Hospital, in Waterville. He was born August 29, 1937, in St. Albans, the son of John A. and Florence E. (Harris) Dodge.

He was educated in the schools of St. Albans. He worked at the Cascade Woolen Mill, in Oakland, for several years. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the US Air Force until his honorable discharge. On September 9, 1978, he married the former Carol Jean Cullen, in Clinton. He loved western movies, especially John Wayne.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 5, 2017 at 12:00 noon at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

WINSLOW – Michael J. Craig, 59, passed away at his home, in Winslow, Sunday, March 25, 2107. He was born February 24, 1958, in Quantico, Virginia, the son of Clayton C. and Inez E. (Goodno) Craig.

He was educated in the schools of Winslow and graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, class of 1976. On October 30, 1976, he married Deborah L. Gilbert, at St John the Baptist Church, in Winslow. He was a veteran who proudly serviced his country in the US Marine Corps as a utility chief during the Gulf War until his honorable discharge. After serving his country, he became a furniture/cabinet woodworker and was employed by Thomas Mosers Cabinet Makers from 1998-2015 and Hodgkins Yachts from 2015 to 2016. He enjoyed hiking, biking, fishing, reading history, woodworking, apollgetics and systematic theology. He attended Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church, in Waterville

He is survived by his wife, Deborah L. STANLEY TIBBETTS

WHITEFIELD––Stanley Tibbetts, 83, of Whitefield, died Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Country Manor Nursing Home, in Coopers Mills, following a period of declining health. Stanley was born on March 13, 1934, in Whitefield, the son of Charles and Gladys Tibbetts.

He attended local schools and after graduating from Erskine Academy in 1952, Stanley worked on, and later owned and operated, the family farm for over 60 years.

Stanley enjoyed horse-pulling, bowling, listening to country music, and having family visit him on the farm. Stanley enjoyed the rhythm of nature and was a great student of the cycle of life on the farm. He was occasionally superstitious, but always patriotic.

Stanley was predeceased by his parents; brothers Donald and Harry Tibbetts; sister Dorothy Hardy; nephews Terrence and Daniel Tibbetts, and Patrick Comer.

He is survived by his sisters, Louise Comer, of Rapid City, South Dakota; Mary Page, of Winslow; and Clara Mayo, of Windsor; as well as many nieces and nephews.

ROBERT D. TOMPKINS

JEFFERSON––Robert David Tompkins, 90, of Jefferson, died of heart failure Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Miles Memorial Hospital, in Damariscotta. He was born on July 27, 1926, son of Herbert Ross and Helen Florence Tompkins, of Hawthorne, New Jersey.

After graduating from Bogota, New Jersey High School in 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, trained as a radar technician, and served aboard the USS Rogers (DD876). He enrolled at Case Institute of Technology upon discharge from the Navy, and received the degree of BSEE in 1950.

He joined the staff of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., as an electrical engineer in the radar division. There he met his wife-to-be, Martha G. Bond, daughter of Willis and Ruth Bond, of Jefferson. They were married in 1952. With the exception of a two-year sojourn in Chile where he was the electrical engineer in an open pit iron mine in El Tofo, Bob remained at NRL until his retirement in 1980. While at NRL, he authored many papers on radar techniques, components and systems. In 1976 he was assigned as a radar expert to support the United States delegation to the World Administrative Radio Conference held in Geneva in 1979. He was head of the engineering support group to the delegation.

While residing in Washington, Bob was active in community affairs. He was the president of the parents group at the Academy of Notre Dame, was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish Council, he helped organize a parents group for the St. Francis Parish school, and served on the Consumer Utility Board (a public interest group concerned with DC utility rates) where he was chairman of the technical committee.

Community involvement continued after his retirement to Maine. He was moderator of the Jefferson town meeting for five years, served as dispatcher and treasurer for the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, was chairman of the town planning board, volunteered as an attendant at the Jefferson Public Library, and was also treasurer of the Bond Burying Ground Association. In addition, he was a member of the St. Denis Parish Council and served for four years as a parish bookkeeper, a member of the Jefferson Historical Society and the Jefferson Public Library.

After living in Maine for a few years, he developed an interest in local history. The fruits of his interest were a history of the Bond Burying Ground followed by a 50th anniversary history of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department. His historical work culminated in a series of four papers on gores, grants and boundaries in northern Lincoln County at the turn of the nineteenth century. They dealt with the Lincoln Academy land grant, Jefferson’s boundary at the time of its charter, the mystery of Waldoboro’s northern boundary and the creation discovery, and establishing the boundaries of Hibbert’s Gore.

Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Martha Bond; two daughters, Ann Liburt, of Jefferson, and Marilyn Tompkins, of Jackman, three sons, Steven Tompkins, of Glenn Dale, Maryland, Andrew Tompkins, of Leesburg, Virginia, and Richard Tompkins, of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

GERALD POMERLEAU

SIDNEY––Gerald “Jerry” Pomerleau, 71, of Sidney,died on Monday, March 27, 2017, in Augusta, of complications of a stroke. He was born on February 15, 1946, in Waterville, the son of Lafayette and Lucille (Caron) Pomerleau.

He graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1965, and entered the US Navy shortly after graduating.

Jerry worked as manager of Cinema Center in Waterville, was the owner of Pine Acres Restaurant in Oakland, and as a self-employed contractor. During time off he enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Paula (MacDonald) Pomerleau, of Sidney; daughters Kelly Neill and her husband David and their children Justin and Eliza, of Debary, Florida, and Lisa Klein and her husband Bob and their children Robert and Delsin, of Oakland; sister Nancy Turmelle and her husband Joe, of Springvale; brother Alan Caron and his wife Kristina Egan, of Freeport; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

FAIRFIELD––Gwendolyn E. Scott, 81, of Fairfield, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at home, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Gwen was born in Washburn on November 2, 1935, the daughter of Earl and Florence Doody.

She married Norman A. Scott in 1953. They were fortunate enough to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013 and were the celebrated guests to many friends and family.

Before her ill health Gwen was able to bless many family members and friends with gifts that she had handcrafted. Her beautiful quilts and afghans will be forever cherished.

JEANNE L. VANCE

OAKLAND––Jeanne Lunette Vance, born April 4, 1924, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

Jeanne was born and raised in Massachusetts, living most of her youth in Natick.

She loved to walk in the fields near her home, picking blueberries and walking among the dragon flies and butterflies. She would pat bumblebees in late fall when they were getty drowsy.

She loved swimming and walking by the water, whether lake or ocean.

She married Gale Lakin Vance in 1943, also from Massachusetts. She worked for 22 years for Zayre, now TJX, most of it working in the office in their Home Office, in Natick, Massachusetts.

After nearly 30 years of marriage and three children, she and Gale parted ways.

She later spent 25 years with Roland Soucy, with whom she did some travelling, and spent winters in the San Diego, California, area and summers in Northwood, New Hampshire, near two of her children.

She moved to China, to live with her daughter and her partner for 4-1/2 years. She then moved to the facility in Oakland where she would spend the last 3-1/2 years of her life. She was loved and wonderfully cared for at Bedside Manor.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Laura, 53; and Laura’s son, Daniel Corrow, 37.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosalyn (Roz) Vance; son William (Bill or Brad) Vance; three grandsons, Billy, Glenn and Joshua Vance; and three great-grandchildren, Nate, Alyssa and Tyler.

ROBERT F. PISCO

JEFFERSON––Robert Frederick Pisco, 75, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Bob grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. At a young age, he served as a paramedic in the U.S. Army. In 1980 he married Ronnie Levine. They lived in Andover, Massachusetts, for 20 years where they raised their family. Bob worked as a contractor specializing in tile work. He was a sought-after tradesman known for his amazing talent and artistry.

Bob’s passion in life was coaching youth baseball. He ran a baseball clinic at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, for 25 years. Teaching kids about baseball, along with life lessons, gave Bob more joy than anyone could know. Bob called baseball “The Game of Life.” One of his proudest achievements was being named The Boston Glove “Coach of the Year” during his tenure at St. Clement’s High School in Somerville, Massachusetts.
After moving to Jefferson Bob began a baseball camp at the Central Lincoln County YMCA. He also coached the team at Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta where he added Busline Championship to his many successes.

Bob is survived by wife, Ronnie; sons, Robert Jr. and wife Melissa, of Gainesville, Florida, Benjamin Weiner and wife Jessica, of Goodyear, Arizona, and Joshua Pisco and wife Amy, of Nashua, New Hampshire; daughter, Lauren Licata, of Porter; grandchildren, Isabella Licata, Madison Pisco, Nathan Pisco, Maxwell Pisco, and Ruby Weiner.

A celebration of his life is planned for Sunday, April 23, at The 1812 Farm, Rt. 130, Bristol, with the time to be announced at a later date.

NANCY WESTERVELT

WINSLOW­­­­––Nancy Ellen Fortuine Westervelt, 84, of Winslow, died peacefully at home Wednesday, March 1, 2017 (Ash Wednesday). Nancy was born in Cambridge, New York, on February 15, 1933, to Dr. Stanley and Susan McGraw Fortuine.

The family moved to Ogunquit in 1935 where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Colby College, in Waterville, where she was an award-winning poet, with a degree in English in 1954. She met her husband, Peter Westervelt, while working at the Lamont and Widener Libraries at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he was completing his under graduate studies. They were married April 2, 1956, at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, while Peter was a Fulbright scholar at Leiden University, in Holland. They subsequently lived in Cambridge, while Peter attended graduate school, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving to Waterville in 1961, when Peter began a long career on the faculty at Colby College. In addition to raising her family, Nancy worked part-time as a writer and editor in the Colby College Alumni and Publications Offices.

Peter and Nancy were surrogate parents to many, including several Colby students who lived with them over the years together with their seven children, and Peter’s Aunt Harriet, in the big house on Winter Street. She sang on stage in Gilbert and Sullivan productions at the Waterville Opera House, in the choirs at St. Mark’s Sacred Heart, and Saint Francis de Sales churches, and the Colby Community Chorus. She was a communicant of Saint Frances de Sales, where she was a Eucharistic minister for two decades. She served on the board at Seton Village, and the Meadowview Condo Association, in Winslow, shere she lived from 2007 until her death.

She was known for her love of family and her close friendships. As many learned, there was always another place in the home she kept and at the table she set. She was renowned as an artist in the kitchen and loved music, her garden, and her cats. She will be forever remembered for her gentleness, generosity, kindness, and extraordinary faith in God.

She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Peter Westervelt (2001), after 45 years of marriage; son Nathan Lord Westervelt (1983); grandson Seth Bizier (1989); and granddaughter, Ella Mariah Schrader Westervelt (2013). She was also predeceased by brothers Edward and Robert Fortuine, and sisters Barbara Bickford and Patricia Freeman,

OAKLAND––Elaine Francis Bushey, 88, of Oakland, died on Friday, March 10, 2017, the day after her birthday, at Oak Grove Rehabilitation and Living Center. Elaine was born March 9, 1929, in Orono, the daughter of William M. Grindle and Alice E. Kent.

Elaine was a graduate of Brewer High School, class of 1947.

On July 1, 1950, Elaine married Norman L. Bushey. She was a happy homemaker who devoted her life to her husband and five children. In addition to raising her family she donated her time to the church and her community, all while making many friends along the way. Her favorite quote was: “I live for my faith, family and friends.”

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Normal L. Bushey; son, Laurence Bushey and his wife Anne; son-in-law, Paul Kiszely; grandson, Justin Bushey; great-grandson, Kenneth Pooley; two sisters; and five brothers.

Elaine is survived by daughters: Joyce Thompson and husband Richard, of Oakland, Joan Kiszely, of Winslow, Judith Mayheux, of Augusta, and Susan Gallant and husband James, of West Gardiner; sister Darlene MacLeod and husband Gene, of Hudson; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a large extended family.

CHRISTINE L. WANSER

PALERMO––Christine L. (Chris/Sis) Wanser, 96, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017, just a little over a month after losing her husband of 75 years, Bud. Christine was born in New Rochelle, New York, on April 9, 1920, to Joseph Dell and Christina P. Lampe.

Her early childhood was spent in Chicago, Illinois, and produced some of her fondest memories of listening to he father’s orchestra at the Trianon Ballroom. After moving to Amityville, New York, Christine met the love of her life, Eugene (Bud) Wanser. They were married in 1941, one year after she graduated from Pace Institute, and together they raised their four children. Chris retired in 1980 from Amityville Memorial High School where she was the guidance department secretary, and make the move to Belgrade with Bud.

Christine was a Charter Member of the Amityville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the North Belgrade Garden Club, in Belgrade.

Chris was a fabulous cook, wonderful baker, amazing seamstress, and loved swimming, traveling, and gardening.
Christine was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Wanser; daughter Christine “Lynn” Termine and her husband Louis.

She is survived by son Franklyn (Bud) and wife Geri; daughter Karen McGreevey and husband Robert; and son Eugene “Dell” Wanser; grandchildren, Steve Termine, Kerri Lenihan and husband Kenneth, Michael Smith, Allison Smith, Deb Whitaker and husband Art, Karen Haskins and husband Shawn, Lauren Roche and husband Michael, Diane Zikowitz and husband Andrew; 22 great-grandchildren; and great-great-granddaughter Kelsea.

BEVERLY G. REYNOLDS, 87, of Durham, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at the Freeport Nursing Home, in Freeport. She was born in Winslow on September 15, 1929, the daughter of William and Anocia (Huard) Glidden. She graduated from Winslow High School, class of 1947. She was an accomplished pianist at the age of 16. In 1949, she married H. Richard Austin. They raised three daughters. She became a widow in 1970, and married Robert O. Reynolds, in 1976, who predeceased her. Beverly was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Locally, she is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Begin and husband Paul, and a sister, Shirley Witham and husband Charles, all of Winslow.
