LEROY W. AUSTIN

CHINA – Leroy “Lee” Winslow Austin, 75, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016. He believed in the power of individuals to affect change in the community through the active presence of God in all things. Selectman, community activist, father, grandfather and teacher, Lee will be remembered for his humanity, faith, and his love and passion for improving the lives of others. Lee truly lived a life consistent with the ideals he believed.

Born in 1941, during the turbulent years of World War II, Lee made an early decision to embrace the Quaker values of peace, love and the importance of truth.

Though raised in the small town of South China, Lee would travel the breadth of the United States before returning to raise his family in the town of his birth. He attended Barrington College, in Rhode Island, where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in music and music education in 1965. After college, Lee moved to California where he continued to pursue his love of music, singing in the well-known Roger Wagner Chorale. Here he also met his partner for life, Ann Miller, and the couple married just six months later in the summer of 1967.

Lee returned with his family to the China area in 1979 where he owned and operated Willow Beach Camps on China Lake for more than a decade. During this time he was also elected to the China Board of Selectmen, and served on the board of directors of The Town Line newspaper and the Chamber of Commerce, and even made a State Senate run in 1986.

In the early ‘90s, Lee turned his efforts to community empowerment. He and Ann opened the China Community Food Pantry in 1992, which they have continued to manage for more than 25 years.

Lee was predeceased by his parents, long-time China residents Ralph and Myrtle Austin.

He is survived by his wife Ann Austin; sister Aurie Spender and spouse Robert; daughters Aurie Maxwell and spouse Ronald, Rebekah Thatcher and husband Christopher, sons Eric, Jonathan and spouse Crystal, and seven grandchildren.

ROLLANDE G. BILODEAU

WINSLOW––Rollande G. Bilodeau, 91, of Winslow passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2016. She was born January 31, 1925, the daughter of Athanase and Rose-Anna Gilbert, in St. Alfred, Quebec, Canada.

She married Gerard Bilodeau in July 1946. Together they formed a loving family with four children, Patrick, Yvan, Marlene and Gilbert. She and her husband worked tirelessly for many years building a successful auto repair and sales business in Winslow. Anyone who met her instantly knew she was a special person who gave of herself always.
She was predeceased by her husband Gerard who died in 1981, her brothers Ronald, Laureat, Jean-Paul, Camille and Patrice and her sister Jeannine.

Rollande is survived by her four children, Patrick and wife Cathy, Yvan, Marlene and husband Al, Bert and his partner Morgan; grandson Jeremy, granddaughter Jennifer and husband David; great-grandson Jacob and great-granddaughter Claire; sisters Eveline and Annette; as well as many nieces and nephews.

DEBORAH A. JONES

SMITHFIELD – Deborah A. Jones, 66, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016, at her home in Smithfield. She was born April 12, 1950, in Waterville, the daughter of Richard and Emilienne (Mathieu) Ouellette.

She was educated in the schools of Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1968. On January 10, 1970, she married Gary Jones, at Sacred Heart Church, in Waterville. She was employed for many years as a telephone operator at New England Telephone, then later at Central Maine Morning Sentinel until her retirement.

Debbie was a member of the Forest J. Pare VFW Post #1285 Ladies Auxiliary for 18 years, in Waterville, and American Legion Auxiliary in Oakland for 27 years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and cooking. She cherished time spent with her family and her dog Bandit, and taking care of her family until her illness.

Debbie is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gary Jones, of Smithfield; son, Michael Jones and wife Melissa, of Smithfield; grandson, Dean Jones and girlfriend Ashley Miller, of Skowhegan; two brothers, Thomas Ouellette and partner Donnette White, of Smithfield, Stephen Ouellette and wife Gwen, of Oakland; two nieces, Emily and Lauren Ouellette, both of Oakland.

MICHAEL P. FLEWELLING

FAIRFIELD – Michael Peter Flewelling, 56, of Fairfield, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Maine Medical Center, in Portland. He was born Dec­ember 10, 1959, in Waterville, the son of Peter H. Flewelling and Germaine (Roy) Wallace.

He graduated from Winslow High School and attended classes at the University of Maine and Kennebec Valley Community College. Michael worked at Thayer Hospital for many years as a housekeeper, phlebotomist, orderly and switchboard operator. Since then he has worked as an inside and outside sales representative for commercial pump companies. Most currently, he was a successful and dedicated sales representative for F.W.Webb for the past nine years.

He was a loving, supportive, and dedicated father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He always had a lending ear, comforting words or humorous sarcasm for any situation. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and girlfriend Kathy. He also enjoyed riding his Harley and exercising his Second Amendment right to the United States Constitution. Most importantly, though, he enjoyed giving to, and helping others.

Michael is survived by his three children Jessica, Tiffany and Travis Flewelling; mother, Germaine Wallace and husband Donald; brother, David Flewelling and wife Michelle; stepbrothers, Nicolaus and Lance Wallace; niece, Katherine Flewelling; nephew, Nathan Flewelling; girlfriend Kathy Warren; Laurie Costigan, mother of his children and life-long friend; many relatives and many, many friends. Michael is predeceased by his father Peter Flewelling and his sister Karen Wallace.

SUMNER T. CARLSON

CHINA––Sumner Tuell Carson, 89, passed away at his son’s home on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. He was born December 24, 1917, the first child of Mildred and Gotthard Carlson.

He grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, but spent his younger summers with his parents, brother, and sister at their cottage in Fieldston on the South Shore. When he was older, he spent his summers at his uncle’s farm in Sumner, where he helped with chores and caring for the animals. He attended Milton High School, followed by a year at Norfolk County Agricultural School, in Walpole, Massachusetts, where he graduated in 1937. He went on to Massachusetts State College in Amherst to take a two-year course in animal husbandry.

In 1939, he and a college friend set out on a cross-country trip to California in a 1930 Model A Ford purchased for $50.

As money got low, they worked for $2 a day and dinner at a dairy farm in Vermont, and threshing oats in Iowa. On the trip, they visited world’s fairs in San Francisco and New York, the geyser in Yellowstone National Park, and the Badlands National Park. They saved money by sleeping in the car or with friends, and bought 10 gallons of gas for $1 in Buffalo, New York.

Sumner joined the army in 1942, and was stationed stateside for four years. He was nicknamed “Meatloaf” because that’s what he cooked whenever it was his turn in the kitchen. He was frugal, saving his pay and purchasing bonds. His service friends used to borrow money from him until payday.

In 1946, he used the money he had saved to purchase Garrison Island, in Friendship, with his parents and brother.
Sumner met Mary Simmons when he purchased the island from her cousin, and they were married in August 1947.

Except for the first year of their married life, they lived year-round on the island until their children were in high school, and then every summer after. He helped build the outbuildings on the island, and a day sailboat with his father and brother. He was a small poultry farmer for a few years, worked as a carpenter, and retired from a lobster dealership in Friendship in 1979.

He busied himself for the next three years by building a new cottage on the island, mowing, planting and maintaining his extensive vegetable gardner, and delivering his rutabagas in the fall to local friends. Maine humorist, John Gould, wrote a newspaper article about Sumner’s legendary turnips, describing how John had instructed the cook at the assisted living home where he then resided, to cook one up for all the people there.

During the last couple of years, Sumner became the advisor for the garden and would ride on the golf cart to inspect it and take note of the produce and any weed growth.

He also had a great passion for baseball and watched every Red Sox game, hoping they would lose (he had been a Boston Braves fan). He read the Boston Herald daily, was a lifelong train enthusiast, and enjoyed his nightly cribbage games with his son.

Sumner lived a long and healthy life. He left behind a legacy of hard work. His favorite saying, “Use it up; wear it out; make it do; or do without,” was instilled in three generations.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary of 58 years; brother, Gilbert; sister, Ann; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Carlson and Rosalie Bearce.

He will be greatly missed by his surviving daughter, Virginia Bearce and husband, Stephen, of Gray; son, Glenn Carlson and wife Emily, of China; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

GLENN R. TURNER

CHINA––Glenn R. Turner, 62, of China, former reporter and editor at the Morning Sentinel who spearheaded the newspaper’s transition to digital layout in the late 1980s, died Sunday, December 4, 2016, following a hard-fought battle with lung cancer, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. Glenn was born March 4, 1949, in Waterville, the son of Richard M. Turner and Beverly J. (Tapley) Turner.

He graduated from Waterville Senior High School in 1967 and from the University of Maine, Orono, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, in 1971. He met his future wife, Kathaleen Ladd, while they both were working at the Holiday Inn in Waterville. They married on February 24, 1973, and had two daughters.

Glenn started working at the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a proofreader on March 25, 1973. He was quickly promoted to reporter, where he showed an innate ability to capture the essence of whatever he was covering. At weekly staff meetings, Glenn’s organizational skills became evident and he soon was known for his pie charts and graphs. Then-city editor Kenneth J. Morton was heard on more than one occasion to refer to Glenn as a “born newspaperman.”

He was promoted from reporter to various positions at the newspaper, including state editor, city editor, managing editor for operations, news projects manager and web and special projects editor. The multiple roles required integration of journalism, editing, technical, Web, budgetary and staff management skills and encompassed two production sites in Waterville and at the newspaper’s sister paper, The Kennebec Journal in Augusta.

Glenn was president of the Maine Press Association from 1993 to 1994 and treasurer and a member of the board of directors from 1994 to 2000. He served on the board of directors of United Way of Mid-Maine from 2000 to 2003. He retired from the newspaper in 2010 at 62, but continued to manage online weekly newspapers and worked for the Mid-

Maine Chamber of Commerce, in Waterville.

Glenn devotedly cared for his wife, Kathaleen, as she battled multiple sclerosis, until her death in 2011.

At the time of his death, he was living with his longtime, loving partner, Susan A. Strasburg, in China.

In addition to Strasburg, he is survived by her son, Zachary T. Walter and his wife, April Snow, and their son, Brogan J. Walter; daughter, Kristin L. Cronkite and husband, Jerod, their daughter, Maddison, and son, Jeremy and his wife Mckenzie and their son, Griffin; daughter, Melanie L. Sweet and husband, Chris, their son Isaac, their daughters Alexia Sweet and Baylie Dalton; a brother, Timothy S. Turner and wife Cathy; nephews, Timothy Turner and wife Audra and their children Cayden and Autum, Robert Turner and wife Hillary and their children Addison and Rosalyin, Brooks Ladd and his wife Rebecca and their children Mathew and Nathan, Spencer Ladd and wife Li and their children Roland and Mackenzie; Arthur Ladd and his wife Shelby.

Glenn also was predeceased by his mother, Beverly J. Turner, father, Richard M. Turner; and wife, Kathaleen L. Turner.

WENDY L. CRANDALL

ALBION – Wendy Lou (Severson) Crandall, 56, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016,at her home. She was born February 21, 1960, in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of the late Laverne and Alice (Nicoll) Severson.

She graduated from Richmond High School in 1978. On December 30, 2000 she married Scott Crandall at Cox Methodist Church in Hallowell. She worked for 20 years as a beautician and more recently as an auditor for Parsifal Corporation.

Wendy enjoyed gardening, crafting, painting and could do anything she put her mind to. She cherished time spent with family.

She is survived by her husband, Scott Crandall of Albion; two daughters, Tracy Terrell and partner John Roinestad, of Richmond, Jessica Terrell Colby and husband Mike, of Virginia; two step-sons, Brett Crandall, of Pittston, Brandon Crandall and wife Kristen, of Georgia; mother-in-law, Trudy Crandall, of Hallowell; seven grandchildren, Dakoda, Lindsey and Lauren Roinestad, Austun and Deven Colby, Taylor Crandall, and Summer Rose Crandall; four siblings, Linda Severson Piunti, Judy Severson Bazilio, Robert Severson, and Patricia Severson Dominquez; 14 nieces and nephews.

FRANCIS J. MORIN

WATERVILLE – Francis J. Morin, 66, of Waterville and Fairfield, passed away November 15, 2016, at the Veterans Adminis­tration Hospital at Togus, a result of exposure to Agent Orange. Born July 20, 1950, in St. Prosper, Dorchester, Canada, he was the son of Lionel and Lucille (Morin) Morin.

Francis was educated in Waterville. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1969 and started working at the lumber store. He met his soon-to-be first wife, Marietta Dutil, at the roller rink in Winslow.

He was drafted out of high school into the U.S. Army, and did basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and St. Louis, Missouri, where he waited to be sent to Vietnam, serving in Nam 1971-1972. Upon his return to the U.S., he landed in San Francisco, California. No veterans there were debriefed about the effects they would suffer from the not-known pesticides from Agent Orange, but only handed a steak supper with a speech and sent home, which was very damaging to their morale.

Francis died from exposure to Agent Orange pesticides from Vietnam, which caused three cancerous tumors, each half the size of grapefruits, on his lower back, which started one month after his first marriage in 1973. The documentation only stated it started in October 2014; the tumors returned in the same area 45 years later, October 2014. Then nose bleeds for months, almost every night; then migraines, from which he suffered badly for years. He was given an anxiety pill to relax him for pesticide poison. You had to know him well to see the pain and turmoil in his eyes; his eyes told agony. he wouldn’t come home for hours; finally, he would call collect, was it safe to come home now, because he was exhausted driving to Boston trying to escape Vietnam. After marrying in 1973, he moved to Gaithersburg, Maryland; Frankfort, Delaware; and Ocean City, Maryland; working for Claremont Pare Construction driving an 18-wheeler.
Francis was a handy man who worked in the northern woods of Maine, with his dad for many years; Statler Tissue; SAPPI, where he retired; and logging with his brother, Mike.

Francis was a very sensitive person, with a great sense of humor. He loved his vegetable gardening, canning all the vegetables he grew (not one spot on them), and then gave up gardening for raising animals, beef, chickens, pigs and 30 turkeys every year for 10 years.

Before Vietnam, he, his dad and brother Mike, and many friends, were great hunters.

He was predeceased by his father, Lionel, in 2011; his mother, in January 2016; and his brother, Mike Morin, in 2013 in a tragic accident.

Francis is survived by his daughter, Kathy; aunts Estelle Morin, Lionette Morin, Louisa Poulin, all of Augusta; Cecil Preneau Morin, of St. Prosper, Canada; many cousins in Canada and New Hampshire.

ROSEMARY SPEIER

WATERVILLE – Rosemary Ivory Speier, 90, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. She was born in Camden, New Jersey, on November 18, 1925, the youngest child of John W. and Rose Mary Oehlers Ivory.

In 1948, she met John H. Speier, at a Dancette. They married on November 18, 1949. Daughter Linda was born in New Jersey, and daughter Cynthia was born in Ohio.

The Speiers moved many times, as John’s career as a mechanical engineer with Scott Paper Company took him up and down the Eastern Seaboard, finally to Alabama, where they retired.

After John passed away in 2015, Rosemary moved to Maine to be near daughter Cindy.

Rosemary was a talented homemaker who gardened, sewed, cooked, served as a Scout leader, and devoted herself to her husband and daughters. She was an accomplished golfer, even having a hole-in-one. Rosemary and John traveled extensively all over the U.S.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents; Aunt Marie and Uncle John; brothers John and Richard.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Roger) Bowman and Cynthia (Joe) Reese; grandchildren, Joseph Reese, Jennifer (Rees Evans) Reese, Robert (Mindy) Bowman, Rachel (Justin) Glantz, and T.C. ALICE ROY-COREY

WATERVILLE – Mrs. Alice Roy-Corey, 52, of Waterville passed away unexpectedly at her home, Thursday, November 17, 2016. Alice was born to parents J. Armand Roy and Marjorie Roy (Gilley) on Feb. 3, 1964, at Seton Hospital, in Waterville.

She grew up the youngest of five children and attended Lawrence High School.

Many will remember her as a lively waitress, a dedicated caregiver as a CNA, and a longtime friend to her many loyal clients.

ERNEST E. KELLEY

FAIRFIELD – Ernest E. Kelley, 76, of Fairfield, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, in Waterville.

Ernie was a lifelong resident of Fairfield. He was proud of his extensive work life, which began in his teens on a farm in Benton and included work in the Fairfield ice house, its woolen mill, and most recently as a custodian at Lawrence High School. He was a proud Bulldog.

In his spare time he loved to fish, ride his ATV, enjoy the outdoors, and play cribbage at the VFW. He loved cats, and especially kittens. He had a great sense of humor and always liked to banter and joke with everyone, even strangers, though most people weren’t strangers for long.

He became a resident of Lakeview Care Center in 2012, and made many friends there, as well. He will be remembered by many friends, co-workers, and students at Lawrence High School.

He was predeceased by his mother, Wilda M. Kelley.

He is survived by his nephew, Paul Desjardins; and his great-niece, Crystal Desjardins.

MILDRED T. SMITH

FAIRFIELD – Mildred Thelma Smith, 81, of Fairfield, passed away on Saturday , November 19, 2016, at Maine General Hospital, following a brief battle with cancer. She was born January 26, 1935, at home, in Albion during an intense Maine blizzard, the daughter of Willard and Thelma (Ware) Marston.

On March 28, 1953, she married Richard Marble Smith and spent her life dedicated to raising a close-knit and loving family. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening, card games, and family gatherings, which were always a great opportunity to showcase her famous beef stew and biscuits, potato salad, and her “outstanding” talents in cake decorating.

She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Marston, and a grandson, Jeremy Germon.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Richard Smith; her children, Lana Waters, and husband James, Donna Holmes and husband Robert, Dale Smith, and Elaine Doucette and husband William; five grandchildren, Dawn Breitenbach, Trevor Smith, Christina Holmes, Sarah Harrison and Michaela Holmes; two great-grandchildren, Ian and Adelina Breitenbach; one sister, Marion Morgan; and one sister-in-law, Charlene Gould.

NEWELL E. GLIDDEN

WHITEFIELD – Newell “Roger” E. Glidden, 84, died Monday, November 21, 2016, at the VA Hospital at Togus following a long illness. He was born in Coopers Mills on October 2, 1932, a son of the late Elmer and Georgia (Cunningham) Glidden.

Mr. Glidden was a graduate of Cony High School, in Augusta, and the Wentworth Institute of Technology, in Boston.
He had been employed for many years by Chambers Ford, in Augusta. Mr. Glidden was a US Army veteran, serving honorably during the Korean War and was the director of civil defense for Whitefield. He was the former fire chief in Coopers Mills and was a member of the Lions Club.

FAIRFIELD – Richard (“Bud”) Marble Smith, 88, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 24, 2016, at Glenridge Nursing Home. The son of Richard and Iola Smith, he was born on August 9, 1928, in Waterville, and grew up in Freedom on the family farm, and later in Albion with his very special Aunt Glad.

He was proudly deployed overseas to the Korean War effort in 1951 for a two-year tour. On March 28, 1953, he married Mildred Thelma Marston, his bride of 63 years. Bud’s lifelong love of horses included logging in the Maine woods as a teenager, horse-pulling competitions at countless country fairs, and raising several ponies throughout his younger years.

He loved gardening, bowling, baseball, and traveling – Bud always considered the journey far more interesting than the destination.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Smith; two sisters: Christine White and husband Donald and Pauline Nickless and husband Erwin; brother-in-law, George Gould; and a grandson, Jeremy Germon.

He is survived by his children: Lana Waters and husband James, Donna Holmes and husband Robert, Dale Smith, and Elaine Doucette and husband William; five grandchildren: Dawn Breitenbach, Trevor Smith, Christina Holmes, Sarah Harrison and Michaela Holmes; two great-grandchildren: Ian and Adelina Breitenbach; one sister, Charlene Gould; and several nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered by everyone in his life as an honest, hard-working husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

WHITEFIELD––Florence N. Hartley, 96, of the Devine Road, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the home of her daughter in Whitefield, following an extended illness. She was born in Presque Isle on April 15, 1920, the daughter of Vinal Shaw and Jaska (Palmer) Shaw.

Mrs. Hartley was a graduate of Skowhegan High School.

Prior to her retirement in 1990, she was employed by the City of Augusta School Department as director of the school lunch program.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ransom W. Hartley in 1977; and a daughter, Lois M. Frost in December, 2015.

SOUTH CHINA––Andis Ivars Busmanis, 57, of South China, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016, due to cancer. Andis was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Viesturs and Dzirkstite Busmanis, on August 1, 1959.
Andis went to Norton High School, in Norton, Massachusetts and to Unity College, in Unity, where he earned an associate’s degree.

He married Karla Vittands on October 6, 1984. Andis was a master carpenter and loved working with the crew at BRI, in Brunswick.

Andis was known for his contagious smile, his affinity for quoting movies, and the twinkle in his eye. An avid outdoorsman, Andis loved to fish, hunt, golf, and work on his family’s land. His favorite thing to do by far was to spend time with his family. Andis will be remembered and missed for his Sunday morning breakfasts, for playing hide and seek with his grandchildren no matter how tired he was, and for his willingness to build anything for anyone (no matter how long it took).

Andis was an amazing father and grandfather, a loving husband, and a loyal friend.

Andis was predeceased by his parents, “Blondie” and “Zita.”

JOAN T. KANE

FAIRFIELD––Joan Thelma Kane, 82, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Lakewood Continuing Care Center in Waterville. Joan was born on June 4, 1934, to Raymond and Thelma Poulin.

She was raised in Fairfield and attended Lawrence High School where she enjoyed playing in the high school band.

Joan adored her father Raymond for the short time they had together before he passed away when she was a mere nine years old. Joan attended the Holy Ghost Hospital and School of Nursing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she completed her LPN nursing degree. Nursing was her lifelong passion, she was an LPN for 35 years, Joan was well known for her loving and attentive care in nursing and for always giving her heart and soul to her patients.

She had a love for dancing and was an active member in the singles clubs. Joan enjoyed gardening, and nature to its fullest. Joan was most fond of trips to the beaches with her family. She loved driving her little red car around town with her little dogs. Life was but an adventure.

She married Ronald Tibbetts and together they had five children.

Joan was predeceased by her granddaughter, Kayla Fletcher; her father Raymond Poulin; her mother Thelma Lane and stepfather Harry Lane; Irene King whom she considered a mother; Lorraine Lessard whom she considered a sister; Beverly Gagne whom she also considered a sister.

Joan is survived by her son Anthony Tibbetts and wife Sandra; daughters, Tina Fletcher and husband Scott, Judy Hall and husband Michael, Lisa Scully and husband Jim, and Lori Meredith; grandchildren, Dominic Tibbetts and partner Laura St. Peter, Stephanie Joyce and husband Terry, Melissa Fletcher and husband Steven Beaulieu, Jessica Ireland and Josh Bragdon, Joy Owens and husband Jevon, Joseph Church and wife Alaina, and Megan MacFarland, Steven and Caitlyn Meredith, and Mercedes Fountain; great-grandchildren, Vincent, Noah, Riley, Mason, Colton, Piper, Nolan, Gabriella, Keegan, and Gavin. OAKLAND––Sheila A. Butler, 62, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at MaineGeneral Hospital, in Augusta. She was born on March 5, 1944, in Waterville to Roland and Madeline (Burgess) Butler.

Her family moved to Oakland when she was a child and Oakland became her full-time residency. Sheila was educated in the Messalonskee School District and graduated in 1962 from what was then Williams High School.

Sheila was employed by Maingas (now Suburban Propane). in Waterville and Fairfield, for 43 years then retired in 2009 to care for her mother.

Sheila enjoyed bowling, playing golf with family and friends, skiing at Saddleback and Sugarloaf, she was an avid reader and loved a good book anytime. She also enjoyed going on bus trips with her mother and friends. Sheila went on several cruises to the Caribbean and a wonderful trip to Alaska. Every summer she so looked forward and enjoyed her weekly stay on the ocean at Pine Point in Maine. Sheila, along with friends and family made this annual stay at the coast for about 45 years.

Sheila was predeceased by her parents Roland Butler and Madeline Stubbert; her stepfather Charles Stubbert, Sr., and several aunts and uncles.

Sheila is survived by her aunt Beverly Barrett; her cousins Deborah and Rick Wentworth, Gail and Dick Kenney, and several other cousins and their families.

Carroll was a graduate of Erskine Academy. He was an over-the-road truck driver.

MASIE KNOWLES

NORTH VASSALBORO – Masie Knowles, 16, aka Charlie, Charles Knowles and Charlie Maze, made the decision to give up the struggle of living this life.

His struggle with mental illness got the better of him. Faced with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, gender identity and just being a teenager, Charles had an incredibly difficult “hand to play.”

Charles was born on December 9, 1999, in Waterville, the daughter and son of Michelle (McQuillan) and Douglas Knowles. He was educated in local schools and was currently a student at Winslow High School. Although Maze often had great difficulty attending school, he was a bright and productive student when he was there, enjoying especially art, and bringing humor and kindness with him. He also enjoyed anime. He thought of becoming a social and political activist for LGBT children.

For those who knew Charles he was supportive and would help those in need. He was sincere in his acceptance of others. The eyeglass frames changed as often as the hair color, and musical tastes were eclectic ranging from Queen to Skrillix to The Beatles.

He was predeceased by his grandmother Evelyn Knowles.

He is survived by his mother Michelle Knowles, of North Vassalboro, and his father Douglas Knowles, of Skowhegan; his two brothers, David and Drew Tardif; his grandparents, John and Shirley McQuillan, and Thomas Knowles; as well as a circle of friends whom he cared for and cherished as best as he could.

OAKLAND – Albertine M. Violette, 93, of Oakland, died at Mount St. Joseph, in Waterville, on Monday, October 31, 2016. She was born in Waterville on October 3, 1923, the daughter of Abbie (Gurney) and Walter Dunton.

She was educated in local schools and graduated from Waterville High School.

She worked at C. F. Hathaway Shirt Factory, in Waterville, for over 40 years, retiring as an inspector. She was a talented craftsman who enjoyed needlepoint, with many of her pieces given as gifts to her family, which have become cherished heirlooms.

Al was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church (Corpus Christi Parish), in Waterville. In 1975 she married Harvey Violette, and in so doing, received a ready-made family that brought great joy and happiness to her life.

Al loved any social event involving the family. She also had a love of dolls without being a collector. In retirement she enjoyed winters in Florida and spending Saturday nights with “The Gang” playing cards, and Sunday drives.

Al was a woman with a big heart as could be seen in her visits to shut-ins as well as helping them in any way they needed. During her time at Mount St. Joseph, she became an avid Beano player and became known for her collection of charms, or “jujus,” as players refer to them.

Al is survived by her husband of 41 years, Harvey Violette, of Oakland; stepchildren, Don Violette and wife Jane, of Waterville, Sandy Violette and husband David, of Winslow, and Patsy Veneziano and fiancé John Pickett, of Winslow; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nephew Ronald Dunton and wife Donna, of Bangor; and nieces Darlene Dunton-Benedict and husband Matthew Benedict, of Maryland, and Sheila Allen, of Waterville.

WINSLOW – Peter Leon Muzerolle, 87, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2106, at Lakewood Nursing Home, in Waterville. He was born April 26, 1929, in Waterville, the son of Arthur Sr. and Lottie (Berard) Muzerolle.

He was educated in the schools of Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1967. On August 17, 1985, he married Dorothy B. Blakney Bolduc at Seton Hospital Chapel, in Waterville. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1946. Peter and brother, Richard, owned and operated Muzzey’s Auto Body Shop, on Kennedy Memorial Drive, in Waterville, for eight years. He worked for Maine Central Railroad for 20 years before retiring early due to an injury to his back.

Peter was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #5, Waterville Elks, and Centerpoint Community Church, in Waterville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, boating, bowling, camping, dancing, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy B. Muzerolle, of Winslow; two sons, Edward Muzerolle and wife Diane, of Sidney, Robert Muzerolle, of Boothbay Harbor; four daughters, Leah Romano, of Waterville, Kathleen Johnson and husband Gary, of Fairfield, Anna Gretta and husband Brian, of Orr’s Island, Lisa Muzerolle, of Portland; three step-sons, Scott Bolduc and wife Lauren, of Rome, Michael Bolduc, of China, Chris Bolduc and wife Sue, of Waterville; three step-daughters, Cheryl Wade, of Winslow, Cindy Jacques and husband David, of Winslow, Lori Dumont and husband Michael, of Vassalboro; six grandchildren; 21 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 27 step-great-grandchildren; many nephews and cousins.

BENTON––Danette D. Gower passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Danette was born to Terry (Brown) and Harold Eastwood, in Torrance, California, on November 2, 1957.

She attended Lawrence High School and graduated in 1975.

Her husband, Ricky first saw Danette at the age of 11 and chased her until she caught him. The were married on February 28, 1976, and they enjoyed 40 wonderful years of marriage together. Theirs was a true love story.

Danette had a love of horses like no other and all animals since early childhood. She enjoyed being creative and crafty as well as spending time outdoors fishing, going for scenic adventurous drives and spending lots of time ono the beautiful river setting where family and friends have gathered for years. Her infectious laugh, beautiful smile and witty sarcasm will be missed by all.

Danette was predeceased by her son Aaron Gower; father Harold Eastwood; sister Debbie Brann; and her stepfather Basil Spalding.

She is survived by her husband Ricky; daughter Liza; five grandchildren, Alyssa, Alixandra, Tryus, Kali and Jaycee; and her siblings Becky Green, Peter Boothby, Toni McDougall, Tami Cecil and DJ Eastwood.

He enjoyed singing and playing his guitar, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

OAKLAND––Ethelyn Mae Harvey passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2016. Ethelyn was born February 27, 1941, in Cape Porpoise, the daughter of Justin Jr. and Ione (Mawson) Foss.

She graduated from Kennebunk High School.

Ethelyn found great joy in spending time with her entire family and friends. She had many hobbies including boat building, doll making, woodworking, painting, fishing, boating, cooking, and sewing. Ethelyn was also an avid swimmer, volleyball player, basketball star, golfer, tennis player, an extraordinary artist, and a dutiful teacher. She enjoyed teaching those who wanted to learn and shared all her knowledge and wisdom to those she came in contact with. Ethelyn was one of a kind and lived her life to the absolute fullest. She instilled in us all what it means to be a true family. “I can’t promise you that I will be here for the rest of your life but I can promise that I will love you for the rest of mine.”

Ethelyn was predeceased by her husband of 46 years Paul Harvey, sister Pauline Foss, and brother Justin Foss III.

CLARA E. CURTIS

AUGUSTA––Clara Elizabeth Cunningham Curtis, 80, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 24, 2016, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born on July 15, 1936, in Augusta, to Reginald and Lena Cunningham.

She grew up and attended school in Vassalboro.

In 1956 she married her husband of 60 years, Richard Curtis. Together they raised six children.

Clara had a very fulfilling life with her whole focus on her family. She was a fun mom who liked to stay active. She started a 4H Club for some of the neighborhood kids teaching them to sew, cook and other craft projects. She was very involved in church, writing and directing plays and teaching Vacation Bible School. She created scavenger hunts for her children, taught them to fish in the rain puddles for milkweed pods that looked just like real fish, and made the best picnics under the willow tree.

Clara was an entrepreneur in her own right. She stated by selling baked goods at a local flea market which sold out weekly. Eventually that led into a business called Carriage House Gardens where she and her husband had a farm stand, made gift baskets, wreaths, sold Christmas trees and, of course, her cheesecake and cream puffs.

After the children left home she found new ways to keep herself busy. She took up painting and writing classers where she really found her passion. In 2008, she published her memoir, Cross Hill, about growing up during the depression in Vassalboro. Clara loved to talk about her childhood and the relationship she had with her cousins and the fun times they had living and playing in nature.

Clara was also very involved in volunteer work. In the 90s she spent much time at Glenridge Nursing Home helping her daughter in the activities department where she loved to decorate for the residents. She also volunteered with the Special Olympics. She was also involved with the non-profit group PAS. Parental Alienation Syndrome, trying to get laws changed and passed in the Senate advocating for parents and grandparents rights.

Clara was predeceased by her parents; two sister, Noreen Bradford and Shirley Barnes; and son-in-law David Tobias.
Surviving are her husband Richard Curtis; sons, Mark Curtis and wife Deborah, and Clint Curtis land partner Valerie Johnson; four daughters, Kathleen Tobias, Debra Elliott and husband Jeffrey, Brandy Labbe and husband Michael, and Stacy Caron and husband Claude; stepson Steven Scholz and wife Kimberly; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WHITEFIELD––Lydia Scott, 97, who was born in Whitefield on May 26, 1919, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016.

Lydia attended the Whitefield school.

She raked and picked blueberries for many years and worked at the Old Homestead, in Manchester, as a cook and Carleton Mill, in Richmond. She belonged to the Grange in North Whitefield Baptist Church.

Lydia was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Frederick Larry Scott, who she married July 11, 1941; parents Lucy Ann (Hansen) Brown and Nathan Brown; 10 siblings, Edith Craig, Clyde Dow, Ruth Quimby, Mabel Desmond, Norman Dow, Lloyd Dow, Bertha Merry, Horace John Brown, Keith Brown and Forrest Brown.

Lydia is survived by two daughters, Lydia Susan Choate and husband Roland Sr., and Elizabeth Arline Presby; seven grandchildren, Roland A. Choate Jr. and wife Allison, Michael Alvin Presby and wife April, Peter Lee Presby and wife

Heather, Debra Sue Dill and husband Robert, William Scott Choate and wife Kim, Nathan Allen Presby and wife Cassie, and Nicholas Frederick Presby; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

TERRY W. COTTA

CHINA – Terry William Cotta, 60, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, following a lengthy illness. Terry was born on December 16, 1955, in Augusta.

He served in the United States Army between 1976 and 1981, stationed in Germany as a vehicle mechanic. Later, Terry worked as a mechanic and construction equipment operator.

Terry was friendly and good-natured, ever supportive of his family, friends and wife. His enthusiasm for life was infectious. He enjoyed motorcycles and NAS­CAR, and his love of cooking was equaled only by his love of eating.

Terry could always be counted on to add a new perspective and unique outlook to a given situation, reminding those he loved that while life is serious, it ought also to be fun. He was a gifted conversationalist, free of condescension, engaging friends and strangers with equal relish. The absence of his buoyant spirit is deeply felt.

He was predeceased by his parents, Francis Cotta Smith and Harvey L Cotta, and by his sisters, Joann Cotta Sheffler and Dawna Cotta Holmes.

Terry is survived by his sisters, Margaret Sharon Cotta and Lisa Cotta Wilson, and by his brothers, Harvey David Cotta and Wayne B Higgins.

VIVIAN S. DANIELS

WHITEFIELD––Vivian S. Daniels, 90, of Whitefield, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at home, from congestive heart failure. Vivian was born in New Jersey on December 13, 1925.
She lived and worked in Florida for 15 years before moving to Whitefield in 1977, where she lived for the last 39 years.

She worked at the Winthrop Mineral Shop for several years before retiring in 1990.

Vivian was a longtime member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club, of Whitefield.

She was an avid bingo player, playing twice a week in Wiscasset and Gardiner. She enjoyed doing word search and picture puzzles.

She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick N. Scott and Maybele Winford Garnier.

GLENNA A. BRAGG

WINSLOW––Glenna Adams Richardson Bragg, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016. She was born in Caswell on January 5, 1919, the daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Addie Mae (Montgomery) Adams.

Glenna was educated in Caswell and Limestone schools. She was employed in various occupations including Hathaway Shirt Co., in Waterville, for 12 years, and Thayer Hospital, in Waterville, for 12 years, retiring in 1989.

She loved music, especially country music. She enjoyed playing the harmonica and the tambourine. Glenna had a green thumb, and loved her plants and flowers.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stanley H. Bragg; her granddaughter, Kristen Caouette; and her son-in-law, Henry Sartin.

Glenna will be sadly missed by her daughters, Gail Sartin, Judith Whitaker (Colby), Donna Glenn (Jerald), and Lana Phair (Cuffy); son Wayne Richardson (Dodi); sisters Katrina Hutchinson, and Nola Doody; 17 grandchildren; and over 50 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren combined.

GLORIA A. COLLINS

WINSLOW––Gloria A. Collins, 83, died peacefully Friday evening October 7, 2016, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born in Waterville on December 31, 1932, the daughter of Patrick and Beatrice (Ferland) Rossignol.

She was educated in local schools and was a Winslow High School graduate, class of 1951. She was formerly employed as a piecework marrker at C.F. Hathaway Shirt Co., in Waterville, for many years, and enjoyed going to the Muskie Center and playing cards and having meals with her friends. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and canningn as well as holiday gatherings with family and liked watching her favorite teams, the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.

She was predeceased by her parents; he husband Lionel F. Collins, who passed away July 22, 2008; brother Robert Rossignol; sister Noella Rioux and brother-in-law Robert Rioux.

She is survived by her son Michael Collins and wife Cindy, of Vassalboro, her daughter Jane Bernhardt and husband Brett, of Waterville; brother Raymond Rossignol and wife Theresa, of Winslow and sister-in-law Amanda Rossignol whom Gloria enjoyed going to Sunday lunch with. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kera Collins Knight and husbance Jake, Greg Collins and girlfriend Tammy Rego, Jessica Bernhardt Jandreau and husband Jared, and Joshua Bernhardt; one great-grandchild, Shyla Knight; and several nieces and nephews.

ROLAND J. NADEAU

VASSALBORO––Roland J. Nadeau, 90, of Vassalboro, died Tuesday, October 11, 2016, in Augusta, following brief period of declining health. He was born April 4, 1926, in Clair, New Brunswick, Canada, one of 17 children of Elizabeth (Lang) and Honore Nadeau.

He attended local schools and at young age began his lifelong career working with trees.

Roland moved to Waterville when he was 18 and worked in the shipping department at Keyes Fibre Co., in Waterville. After a time he started his own business clearing trees from land and for house lots. He also worked for the city of Waterville doing tree removal. He also did building demolitions.

Roland was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Lorraine (Roy) Nadeau, in April 1995; and nine of his brothers and sisters.

Roland is survived by his wife of 20 years, Doreen (Cothran) Nadeau; his six children: Paula Terrio, Diane Wilson, Richard Nadeau, Larry Nadeau, Jane Silva, and Tina Murphy; his three step-children, Matthew Foster, Brenda Thurlow, and Phyllis Cote; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Nadeau, and George Nadeau; five sisters, Jean Nadeau, Rita Potvin, Doris Quirion, Rena Morin, and Marie Rodrique; and a very large extended family.

JOHN E. WARDWELL

WINDSOR––John E. Wardwell, 72, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at MaineMedical Center, Portland, following a brief illness. He was born in Castine on June29,1944, a son(Gross) Wardwell.

Mr. Wardwell was a gradate of George Stevens Academy, in Blue Hill.

He retired in 2003 from Bath Iron Works after 24 years of employment. He previously worked for Harwoods Barber Shop, Lyon Builders and, for 20 years, he was a self-employed taxidermist.

Mr. Wardwell was a member of South China Community Church, a Past Master of Bethlehem Lodge #35 and also had duel membership with Dirigo Masonic Lodge in Weeks Mills. He was a member and Past Patron of Our Rose of Sharon Chapter #13 Order of the Eastern Star, Lily of the Valley #157 Order of the Eastern Star, served as Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Maine Order of the Eastern Star from 2009-2010. He was a DAD advisor of the Capital City Chapter Order of DeMolay. He was also a member of the Mountain Men Association, Bass Club,  Maine Bowhunters Association and Taxidermy Association.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, camp and, most recently, golf.

Mr. Wardwell was predeceased by a brother, Dana M. Wardwell and a sister, Lois E. Donaghy.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elaine E. (Wood) Wardwell, of Windsor; two sons, Tony L. Wardwell and wife Donna, of Augusta and Todd E. Wardwell and wife Sylvie, of China; sister, Ruth Harris and husband Lee, of East Hampton, Connecticut; six granddaughters, Jessica, Tami, Ashley, Linsey, Holly and Stephany; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

CAROL A. ECKERT

WINDSOR – Carol A. Eckert, died just past sunset on October 13, 2016, her 63rd birthday, from injuries received three days earlier in a bicycling accident in her home town of Windsor. She left our world at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Carol was born on October 13, 1953, in Rutherford, New Jersey.

She was valedictorian of her high school class and received her B.S. in biology and biochemistry from Douglass College in 1975. She graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1979 and in 2007 earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of New England.

Along the way she picked up her loving husband, Jeffrey Frankel. They married on May 24, 1974, and embarked on the great adventure of their lives when they re-located to Maine for Carol to start her medical residency at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency, in Augusta. Upon completion of the residency in 1982, Carol began her practice at Sheepscot Valley Health Center, in Coopers Mills.

Her commitment to and compassion for her patients was legendary. And delivering babies was the best part of the job.

She remained at SVHC until 2013, at which time she became a float physician for the 11 health centers operated by HealthReach Network, the parent organization of SVHC. After a good day at work at the Lovejoy Health Center, in Albion, she pedaled off for a relaxing bike ride but never made it home.

Carol was the mother of two great kids who adored her: Sam, 34, and Hannah, 27. Nothing made her happier than spending time with, cooking and baking for her family. Bicycling, hiking, climbing, yoga, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, plant foraging, reading and drinking coffee were her passions in life, along with hobbies, interests and pursuits too numerous to mention. She was a vegetarian for decades, and loved coordinating food orders for the Jefferson Food Co-op and receiving her weekly bag of CSA produce.

In addition to her work at HealthReach, Carol served as medical director of the Maine Community Accountable Care Organization and was a medical consultant for Social Security Disability Services.

Carol gave of herself to many volunteer and non-profit organizations. These included many medical missions to the Dominican Republic with the University of Southern Maine nursing program, harvest season health clinics with the Maine Migrant Health Program, the Maine Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Maine Labor Group on Health, the Windsor School Board, 30 years’ membership on the Maine Pesticides Control Board, plus many others.

Carol leaves behind her husband, Jeff. He will forever remember the smile in her voice, the hoarfrost in her hair, and the boundless love and devotion she showered on him during their years together.

Carol is also survived by her mother, Anne Scerbak, of Harwich, Massachusetts; son Sam Frankel, of Portland; daughter Hannah Frankel and fiancé Ryan Nill, of Austin, Texas; sister Nancy Eckert, her husband Jay Benkovich and nephew Jonathan Benkovich, of Rutherford, New Jersey; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Deborah and Armando Mantilla, nephew Aaron and niece Sarah, of Fair Lawn, New Jersey; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marsha Frankel and Bill Natali, step-niece Crystal Taylor and children Kaitlyn Miller and Isabel Disla of Orlando, Florida.

GEORGINA L. GERMON

BENTON––Georgina Lou Germon, 86, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at Bedside Manor, in Oakland. She was born in Warwick, Rhode Island, June 5, 1930, the daughter of the late George and Mabelle (Page) Bither.

Georgina worked various jobs over the years. She was a lifetime member of the Benton Grange. She also was a past member of East Benton Christian Church where she held the position of treasurer of the Ladies Aide.

Georgina was a very good mother, and always was willing to help those in need. She enjoyed knitting mittens for family and for those less fortunate. She also enjoyed sewing, braiding rugs, gardening, canning, cooking, and baking.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas F. Germon, who passed away September 21, 2013; brother, Roger Bither; infant twin sisters, Pauling and Corrine; and grandson, Jeremy Germon.

Georgina will be deeply missed by her children, Thomas Germon Jr., of East Benton, Audrey Morneau and husband Norman, of China, Dale Germon and wife Linda, of East Benton, and Wendell Germon and wife Leah, of Canaan; twin sister, Mabelle Nealley, of Winterport; sister, Jackie Hayes, of California; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

NAJLA (NAWFEL) JOSEPH

FAIRFIELD––Najla (Nawfel) Joseph, 91, died Thursday, October 13, 2016. Najla was born April 4, 1925.

She was a star high school basketball player. In a time when girls were only allowed to play half-court ball, on a team led by a coach who wasn’t sure if “Lebanese girls” should share the floor with “regular” girls, this was no small endeavor.

Najla’s warm demeanor, her disarming personality, and her stubborn nature were just the right mix to allow her to make the team, and ultimately become its star player; and this was just the beginning of an exemplary life.

Najla loved to ride her baby-blue bike all around town. And when she was a bit older, loved driving her baby-blue Volkswagen Beetle. Najla was a force; through her entire life she lit up a room with her smile and made all those around her feel at ease.

In 1946, she married Harold Joseph. Together they raised three daughters, Paula, Sharon and Tenley, and ran a wonderfully successful store in Fairfield, Joseph’s Clothing and Sporting Goods. Naj always made sure customers received the warmest welcome and fairest deal, all while ensuring the bills were paid and creditors happy.

Najla learned, from her mother, the art of making the deeply satisfying Lebanese food.

She was predeceased by her parents Sam and Adma (Daghir) Nawfel; sisters, Laura and Amera Nawfel and Zanie Hikel.

In addition to her daughters, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters, Najla is survived by her brother, Dr. Michael Nawfel and wife Dolores, as well as soons-in-law, Kris Baxter and Jon Eustis.

KAREN L. CUCCI

ALBION––Karen Lee Cucci, 67, of Albion, passed away peacefully Friday, October 14, 2016, at the V. A. Togus Springs, in Augusta.

For 48 years she was the wife of Jeff Cucci.

Born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, she was the daughter of Richard and Joan Shonk. Serving her country, she joined the U. S. Army on August 29, 1967, and was honorably discharged June 30, 1969.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her two adult children Beth Wallinga and Ben Cucci, their spouses, and seven grandchildren.
