Vassalboro transfer station members look at sketches for safer facility
by Mary Grow
At a 45-minute Dec. 18 meeting, Vassalboro Transfer Station Taskforce members compared two sketch plans for a safer and more efficient disposal facility. They discussed advantages and disadvantages of each and decided they need more advice from engineer Jeff Senders, head of Camden-based Senders science, engineering & construction.
Taskforce discussions have been on-going at intervals since late 2023, when Senders was the only respondent to a request for proposals to design a new transfer station building.
Goals of the redesign include making the facility safer, by eliminating the need to back up to dispose of trash; creating a more convenient traffic pattern; and increasing efficiency. One specific idea is adding a short row of smaller disposal bins, so people bringing only a few bags of trash can avoid the main hopper altogether.
Taskforce members have considered giving the transfer station separate entrance and exit driveways. Station Manager Adam Daoust said expanding the driveway area eastward would provide better sight distance than trying to move it west.
Town Manager Aaron Miller said a house and large garage on about 1.5 acres of the tax-acquired property adjoining the transfer station on the east are listed for sale. The town intends to keep – and pay for – about 4.5 acres for potential future expansion of the facility.
Miller intends to try to schedule a taskforce meeting with Sender sometime in January, the date to be determined by Sender’s availability.
