WHITEFIELD––Ellsworth (Ellie) Ernest Damon, of Whitefield, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017, at Togus Hospice. Ellie was born in Greenville, October 5, 1921, to Ernest and Orpha Damon.

When Ellie was a very young child the family moved to the Thayer Road in Whitefield to the house that he called home for the next 90 years. Ellie was an avid gardener and the homestead flourished under his care. He grew apples, plums, blueberries, grapes and a huge garden. His root cellar was always full and the shelves in the basement were well stocked with his preserves. Ellie took pride in growing what he ate, and he loved to eat!

Ellie served his country in the army during WWII. He deployed to the European Theater until the war ended and was in the Army of Occupation after the war. He served in an armored car division as gunner and radio operator.

After the war Ellie went to work in Alaska where he first learned to fly. Ellie continued to fly for many years and owned a Piper J3 that he flew all over the state, landing in fields and snowfields as he never had a pilot’s license. He kept his plane in Dresden at the airfield of the “Flying Farmer” with whom he was great friends.

After his time in Alaska, Ellie worked various jobs, working in the woods and lumber mills, and working for Potters Pots, in Whitefield, making lobster pots. He continued to work in the woods cutting his own firewood his entire life. He was always a few years ahead on firewood and said that it was the key to a long life. At 92 he could still be found out in the woods with his John Deere B and Stihl chainsaw, head down doing what he loved.

Ellie joined the Masons in 1950 and had been a member of the Riverside Lodge #135 in Jefferson for more than 65 years.

In the late 1950s he went to work at the then young Baxter State Park where he worked as the ranger at South Branch Pond. He lived and worked at South Branch for 12 years. He helped cut some of the early trails in the park and there is still a trail there that bears his name.

After leaving Baxter, he worked on the Maine Central Railroad in Rockland where he ran the entire railroad yard. He ran the office, did maintenance on the trains, cleaned cars, greased couplings, you name it, he did it. He worked at the railroad until his retirement.

After retirement Ellie devoted the rest of his long life to the things he truly loved: working in the garden, cutting firewood for himself and others, taking hunting and fishing trips with family and friends. He had many connections around the state and loved to go on road trips with his camper. He was always invited on a moose hunt because he was a great cook as well as great outdoorsman. He loved company and always had visitors, when you visited Ellie there was always someone there with him on the porch or in the living room.

After graduating from Bogota, New Jersey High School in 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, trained as a radar technician, and served aboard the USS Rogers (DD876). He enrolled at Case Institute of Technology upon discharge from the Navy, and received the degree of BSEE in 1950.

He joined the staff of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., as an electrical engineer in the radar division. There he met his wife-to-be, Martha G. Bond, daughter of Willis and Ruth Bond, of Jefferson. They were married in 1952. With the exception of a two-year sojourn in Chile where he was the electrical engineer in an open pit iron mine in El Tofo, Bob remained at NRL until his retirement in 1980. While at NRL, he authored many papers on radar techniques, components and systems. In 1976 he was assigned as a radar expert to support the United States delegation to the World Administrative Radio Conference held in Geneva in 1979. He was head of the engineering support group to the delegation.

While residing in Washington, Bob was active in community affairs. He was the president of the parents group at the Academy of Notre Dame, was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish Council, he helped organize a parents group for the St. Francis Parish school, and served on the Consumer Utility Board (a public interest group concerned with DC utility rates) where he was chairman of the technical committee.

After living in Maine for a few years, he developed an interest in local history. The fruits of his interest were a history of the Bond Burying Ground followed by a 50th anniversary history of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department. His historical work culminated in a series of four papers on gores, grants and boundaries in northern Lincoln County at the turn of the nineteenth century. They dealt with the Lincoln Academy land grant, Jefferson’s boundary at the time of its charter, the mystery of Waldoboro’s northern boundary and the creation discovery, and establishing the boundaries of Hibbert’s Gore.

STEVAN E. GRESSITT, M.D.

UNITY––Stevan Edward Gressitt, M.D. died unexpectedly on Monday, March 13, 2017. Born in Yreka, California, Stevan was the son of John and Doris (MacKellar) Gressitt.

He graduated from the Porter Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina, from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and from the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina. He served as chief resident in psychiatry at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Moving to Maine in 2001, Stevan was an active supporter of the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians, and served as councilor, committee member and committee chairman at various times. He was involved in many other professional organizations, such as the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, the Maine Medical Association, the Maine State Psychiatric Working Group (Drug Utilization Review Committee), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences,, Environment and Pharmaceutical Section), and the Maine Health Workforce Forum, Maine Office of Rural Health and Primary Care.

Stevan founded the Maine Benzodiazepine Study Group, and worked passionately for a better understanding of the adverse effects of prescription medications and for practices that are more effective, safe and cost-effective. He tirelessly promoted the awareness of adverse environmental consequences of inappropriate medication disposal, including pharmaceutical contamination of ground water streams and rivers. He promoted the practice of initially prescribing in smaller amounts, to reduce the volume of unused medication that could be diverted or be the cause of accidental poisoning. He pioneered medication take-back events that many communities now sponsor, and that provide data to illuminate issues of waste, fraud and abuse in prescribing practices.

He was an exceptional psychiatrist, with great vision, dedication and relentless energy and courage.

Stevan was a principled man, and a loving and deeply devoted husband, son, brother and father. He was also endlessly quirky, making no two days with Stevan the same. He would take a break from psychiatric articles to spend half an hour with his ducks; he would become fascinated by the beauty of a feather, or the form of an egg. He had no interest in living in a home without dogs and cats, and took great pleasure in their presence and the way they lived their lives. He was a complicated being and the most interesting companion his wife has ever known. She, and his family and friends, miss him deeply.

He is survived by his wife, Gail M. Chase; his mother,Doris M. Gressitt; his sister, Alexandra S. Gressitt; and his daughter, Carina A. Gressitt.
