PAMELA L. STICKNEY

CHINA – Pamela L. Stickney, 60, passed away Friday, August 24, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center following a brief and courageous battle against cancer. Pam was born on July 10, 1958, to Helen Cromwell Stickney, and Ervin W. Stickney in Skowhegan.

She grew up in Norridgewock and the surrounding area, then later lived and established her family in Winslow with her former husband James Goodwin, where together they raised their children.

Pam’s family was the most important thing to her and she always put them first. Pam’s giving nature and concern for others was often shown in her good morning texts, silly emojis and pictures that she’d send to her loved ones just to say hi, or to check in on them. These messages brought joy to those receiving them and certainly will be missed, but will continue to bring a smile when needed. For many, she was their “Prayer Warrior.” She sent many prayers up and also would find scriptures to lift their spirits and bring peace. One of the greatest things she loved to do with her partner, George, was to go shopping at Goodwill and lawn sale-ing on Saturday mornings. This had been a lifelong passion of hers. Her gifts will now be cherished memories of her thoughtfulness to those she loved.

Pam worked in various occupations in her life beginning at a young age. She was particularly proud of her time spent working in nursing homes as a CNA, not surprising because she had compassion and respect for anyone in need.

Pam was content with a simple life. She felt no need for extravagant things. She was happy to end her day with a cup of tea and a chocolate. She enjoyed silly hats, word puzzles, spending time with family, collecting strawberries, socializing through Facebook, and making other people happy. Her day could easily be made when someone would bring her favorite drink: an “Extra Large Half-calf coffee, just cream” from Dunkin’ Donuts. One would think they had given her the world, and they may have, because she thoroughly enjoyed the company that came with the gesture. You never had to try to impress her. Just be yourself and show kindness; she was quick to know who was sincere.

Pam didn’t consider herself to be a courageous person, anyone who was fortunate enough to spend time with her following her diagnosis would have never known. She had overcome many hardships in her life but often downplayed those victories.

Pam was predeceased by her parents; her brother Mark Stickney; infant brother Jeffery Stickney.

She is survived by her daughter Jamie Goodwin, of China; her son James Goodwin and his wife Randi, of China; her grandsons Jimmy, Eli and Gabriel, her partner George Clemmer Jr.; sister Barbara Bell, of Skowhegan; brothers Bernard Stickney and his partner Diane Glidden, of Mars Hill, Gordon (Tom) Stickney and his wife Debbie, of Chelsea; and Galen Trask Jr. and his wife Lisa, of Akron, Michigan; several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins.

LEON W. LOUCKS

OAKLAND – Leon William Loucks, 75, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Country Manor Nursing Home, in Whitefield, following a brief illness. He was born December 3, 1942, in Oakland, the son of William C. and Doris V. (Lewis) Loucks.

Leon worked his school summer years doing yard work and haying fields in Smithfield. After graduating from Williams High School, in Oakland, he worked for Diamond National, in Oakland, and for Fuller Brush sales until he worked for the Waterville Morning Sentinel for over 17 years. He became interested in the mental health field a few years later and began working as a mental health counselor. He also attended the University of Maine in Augusta to earn his BS degree in social sciences until early retirement in 1999.

Leon enjoyed sports. While his children were in school, he did parent voluntary coaching for the school sports program.

Leon worked with his dad in 1968 and 1969 designing and building the family home in Sidney where his family lived until he became ill in 1999. Upon retirement, Leon and Sheila lived in Waterville until they bought their retirement home in Oakland.

Leon is survived by his wife, Sheila York Loucks, of Oakland, and by his children, Laurie and husband, Gregory Roberts, of Baxter, Tennessee, Boyd Loucks, of Waterville, Brian Loucks and wife Bridgette, of Oakland, and Trena and husband, George Cousins, of Smithfield; six grandchildren, Anthony Loucks, of Winslow, Dameon Loucks, of Augusta, Kody Loucks, of Skowhegan, Dustin Loucks and Drake Loucks, both of Oakland, and Kylee Loucks, of Fairfield; one great-grandson, Connor Loucks, and one great-granddaughter, Natalee Loucks, both of Augusta; two sisters, Gloria (Richard) Luce, of Cape Elizabeth and Charlotte (Edward) Tardiff, of Sidney, and one brother, Christopher (Wendy) Loucks, of Hancock.

He was predeceased by his parents, William C. and Doris V. (Lewis) Loucks, one brother, William Loucks and one sister, Helen (Joseph) Dubois as well as his son, David Earl Loucks (Dee Dee).

KEITH C. NELSON

PALERMO – Keith C. Nelson, 84, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at Inland Hospital, in Waterville. He was born June 20, 1934, in Palermo, the son of Jasper C. and Edith (Brown) Nelson.

He graduated from Erskine Academy, in South China, class of 1952. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War until his honorable discharge. Keith worked for many years as a self-employed farmer/lumberman and was a former Branch Mills Grange member.

Keith is survived by his brother, Royce B. Nelson and wife Jeannine, of Palermo; sister, Jackie Nelson, of Palermo; three nephews, Todd Nelson and wife Tina, of Palermo, Troy Nelson and wife Angela, of Palermo, Allen Warren and wife Denise, of Connecticut; niece, Joy (Nelson) Baig and husband Babar, of Massachusetts; numerous grandnieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

STEVEN L. COLE

CHINA – Steven Lee Cole, 64, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 18, 1954, in Albion, the son of Roger Sherman Sr. and Louise Lee (Barker) Cole.

He attended schools in Albion and on April 18, 1972, he married Susan Cole. They were married 37 years and had eight children. They had always remained close friends. He was employed for many years at Ace Tire, in Waterville, Dan’s Auto Parts, in Benton, was a self-employed mechanic and did woodworking with his son. Steve was a member of the United Bikers of Maine and belonged to a bowling league. He enjoyed auto racing, drag racing, automotive mechanics, building motors with his sons, riding his motorcycle and snowmobiling with family and friends, fishing, and loved spending time with his family.

Steve was predeceased by his son Steven Cole Jr.

He is survived by five sons, Seth Cole and wife Sarah, of Pittsfield, Shane Cole and wife Paula, of Winslow, Saul Cole and wife Ashley, of Waterville, Scott Cole and wife Tysha, of Albion, Stuart Cole and wife Valerie, of China; two daughters, Shelley Marcoux and husband Lee, of Sidney, Sonya Cole and fiance Dan Parsons, of Winslow, Susan Cole, of Shawmut; two brothers, Roger Cole Jr. and wife Patricia, of Canaan, Timothy Cole and wife Stacey, of Virginia; four sisters, Natalie Labbe and husband Steve, of Shawmut, Sally Funk and husband James, of Connecticut, Marlena Funk and family, of Pittsfield, Martha Rowe and family, of Newport; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

ALTA L. LAMBERT

WINSLOW – Alta L. (Heald) Lambert, 83, passed away Monday, September 10, 2018, at her home, in Winslow. She was born October 7, 1934, in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Foster and Doris Mary (Leonard) Heald.

She was employed for many years as an office manager at American Glass Company, in Waterville. She was a devoted member and former president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #5, in Waterville, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Alta always enjoyed making whoopie pies and Lambert spaghetti dinners. She had a funny sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. She had a wonderful personality and was loved by many.

Alta is survived by four daughters, Linda Gormly of Rhode Island, Darlene Golodetz, of Waterville, Lisa Lambert, of Winslow, and Lori Peterson, of Fairfield; her son Chuck Lambert and wife Linda, of Winslow; granddaughters, Alaina Lambert, of Winslow, Taylor Rodriguez, of Winslow, Meghan Caromile and husband Bruce, of Rhode Island, Krysten Gormly, of Washington, D.C., Jennifer Willette, of Vassalboro, and Cassandra Conary, of Waterville; grandsons, Josh Gormly of Rhode Island, and Derek Harris, of Waterville; seven great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons; and her sister Germaine Gooldrup, of Waterville; many nieces and nephews.

FLORA M. RICHARDSON

BRIDGTON – Flora (Auntie) Richardson, 79, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018 following a brief illness. She was born in Vassalboro on November 1, 1938, the daughter of the late Raymond A. Bronn Sr. and Margueite (Peggy) Sylvain

She was brought up in Palermo and attended local schools. She met her husband Allan Richardson, in Richmond. They were married October 22, 1955, in Portland. Then moved to Bridgton in 1956, where they made their home for 62 years.

She worked as a hand sewer at Pleasant Mountain Moc, in Bridgton, as well as cleaning homes, and as a collator at Yankee Masters. She and her husband loved to travel, and did seasonal camping in Cornish and Fryeburg Fair. She loved birds, rooting for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Racing, and was a member of the Bridgton Congregational Church.

Surviving, besides her husband Allan, for almost 63 years, are two brothers, Bertrand Bronn, of Scarborough, and Everett Bronn, and one sister Christie (Bronn) Merrick, all of Washington State. She also leaves behind Sam Ross, a special young man whom she took care, and nephew Bard Richardson; several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-grandchildren, and several cousins.

She was predeceased by one sister, Erdine Fletcher, three brothers, Raymond (Sonny) Bronn Jr., Samuel Bronn and Abraham Bronn, as well as step-mother Grace Bronn. There will be no funeral services. A graveside service will held at a later date at the L.A. Berry Cemetery, in Denmark. A celebration of her life will be held on Sept. 22, from 2 – 5 p.m., at thge Bridgton Community Center, 15 Depot St., Bridgton.

WILLIAM E. LYBROOK

FAIRFIELD – William E. Lybrook, 82, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta, following a brief illness. He was born August 11, 1936, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Thomas and Marion (Moore) Lybrook.

As a young man, William enlisted in the Unites States Air Force where he served from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean War. He went on to serve in the Air Force Reserves until 1961.

On June 1, 1958, he married Eloise Goodspeed and went on to raise three children together. William and Eloise ran several family businesses, including apartment rentals, auto salvage yard and a used car lot, spanning 55 years. Throughout the years, William enjoyed traveling with his family including hunting and fishing with his sons, Kenneth and William II. In later years, he enjoyed wintering in Northport, Florida.

William is survived by his significant other, Linda Dunaway, of Fairfield Center; Ernestine Lessiker and husband Steven, Kenneth Lybrook and wife Leisa, William Lybrook II and wife Lynn; grandchildren, Katherine and Jennifer Lessiker, Kemp Lybrook and Molly Lybrook; siblings, Ethal Batton, Henry Lybrook, Richard Lybrook, and Ida Lybrook all from Ohio; several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Tomas and Marion Lybrook; wife, Eloise; siblings, Bob, Leroy, Tommy and Mary; also his precious granddaughter, Beth Lybrook.

ROLAND C. LESSARD

WINSLOW – Roland C. Lessard, 91, of Winslow, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Oak Grove Center, Waterville, following a brief illness. He was born in Waterville on December 11, 1926, the son of Odilon and Alexina (Doyon) Lessard and lived in the Waterville-Winslow area all of his life.

Roland graduated from Winslow High School, class of 1944. He was employed at Scott Paper Company for 15 years and then employed by Central Maine Power Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Roland served in the U. S. Navy during World War II as a Radioman 3rd class, serving in the Pacific Area. He was a member of Bourque-Lannigan Post#5, American Legion, Waterville and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #8835, Winslow.

He was predeceased by his father, Odilon; mother, Alexina; sister, Olivette; and a son,l Jeffrey.

Roland is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Lessard, of New Jersey, and Carol A. Gaedtke and husband, Larry, of New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Christopher D. Biron and wife, Melissa, and Jamison D. Biron of New Hampshire; great-grandson, Maddox; and best friend and companion, Rose Manzo, of Winslow.

WINDSOR – Denise M. Pelletier, 59, of Windsor, passed away at her home on Friday, August 10, 2018. Denise was born February 8, 1959, to parents Armand and Bertha Pelletier.

She grew up in Gardiner with eight siblings. She often spoke of helping her mom cook delicious donuts and helping her dad with his horses. She attended Gardiner High School and worked for the State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle. Denise loved her “girls” from work and her close friends who did so much for her while she battled breast cancer for nine years. Denise loved taking trips with her family and significant other. She enjoyed sewing quilts, doing crafts, woodworking, and her flower garden.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Jackson; her parents, Bertha and Armand Pelletier; and her grandmother, Alice Cote.

TERRI L. BOYNTON

FAIRFIELD – Terri L. Boynton, 54, died on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at her home. She was born April 7, 1964, in Belfast, the second daughter of Peter R. Perry and Rowena Young Perry.

The family resided in Massachusetts until the late 1970s.

She was educated in Massachusetts and Maine, graduating from Erskine Academy, in South China, in 1982, and Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) in 2002, with a bachelor’s degree in ITT-Tech. She worked for the China school system several years and was employed by Summit Natural Gas Co. for the last five years.

Terri met Ralph Frank Boynton at KVCC. They were married July 7, 2014. Terri and Ralph loved travel, camping, crafting, music and the arts, good food, and good friends and family.

She was predeceased by her father, and grandparents, Arthur and Hope Walsh and Maurice and Charline Bumps Young.

She is survived by her husband Ralph; mother Rowena Y. Perry; daughter Elissa Rowe Wynne and husband Chad and their child Stella Grace; son James Rowe and wife Meghan Belanger and children Madison and Sophia; step-daughter Jaime Fagan and husband Chris and her daughter Lorelai Rice, and step-daughter Jesse Turner, her sons Daniel Turner and Anthony Peace; sister Caroline Morgan, and her daughter Erin Leighton and husband Corey and son Alex; sister Robin Maraggio and husband Tom, and her daughter Abby Obin; father-in-law Frank “Bud” M. Boynton.

THERESE E. FROST

WATERVILLE – Therese Estelle Frost, 88, of Waterville, passed on Thursday August 16, 2018, at Mount Saint Joseph. She was born in Winslow on June 16, 1930, one of eight children of Emma (Roy) and Edras Pomerleau.

She was educated in local schools and retired from C.F. Hathaway, in Waterville, in 1990 following 30 years of service.

Therese belonged to the Ladies of Ste. Anne at St.de Sales Francis Catholic Church, in Waterville. She enjoyed playing cribbage with her husband and friends. Therese loved to travel and was known for being active and always on the go until her health began to change. She was a kind and generous woman who wore a smile where ever she went.

Therese is survived by her husband, Harold D. Frost; eight stepdaughters: Camilla Corson, Geraldine Maheu, Estelle Quimby, Anne Frost Rehner, Judith Frost Gillis, Barbara Frost, Marjorie Frost, Susan Frost, one stepson, Richard Frost; many step-grandchildren; niece and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, George Cahill in 1974, and her second husband, Aurele Guerette in 1996; as well as all of her siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday Aug. 25, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver Street, Waterville with burial following in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 78 Grove Street, Waterville.

JACQUELINE L. GOSSELIN

WINSLOW – Jacqueline (Lamy) Gosselin, 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 15, 2018. Jackie was born and raised in Forge Village, Massachusetts, the daughter of immigrant Franco-American parents Hormidas and Helena (Isabelle) Lamy.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and worked at the local woolen mill prior to starting her family. In 1950, she married the love of her life and embarked on the full-time job of raising three children, later relocating with her husband to Winslow where she put down roots for the next 53 years. She worked at Waterville Adult Education for a time and engaged in community service through the Daughters of Isabella, working to provide help for those in need.

Jackie’s family grew to span four generations of which she remained the matriarch and hub, a job from which she never retired. Even through her last days she continued to care for her brood, telling them to eat and go to bed. She was the organizer of family holidays and instilled a love of celebration, laying her artistic touch on every birthday, holiday, and special event over the course of 68 years. She embraced her strong Catholic faith and spent endless hours praying for others, especially her family who provided her with ample opportunity. She was also the owner and operator of “Memere’s Motel” where her grandchildren checked in for countless sleepovers, often arriving in groups after colluding with each other through the cousin phone tree. Their Memere welcomed each and every encounter with open arms and loving heart.

Jackie exuded a gentle spirit that belied a fierce independence and iron will, which those who knew her intimately understood could not be broken.
Her innate toughness allowed her to remain living independently in her home where she most wanted to be, surrounded by her large, noisy, often chaotic tribe ranging in ages from one through 66. The antics of her great-grandchildren provided her with the gift of many laughs and so much joy through her last months. In her final days she glowed with love, joy and peace amidst the fruit of her life’s work, content with a life well lived.

Jackie was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Gerald Gosselin; her parents; her sister Dorry Melancon; and her infant granddaughter Courtney.

She is survived by her son Gerald Gosselin, Jr. and wife Gen; daughters Priscilla Rice and husband Michael, and Celeste LaPointe and husband Stan; grandchildren Kirsten Pomeroy and husband Cory, Stephanie Grondin and husband Travis, Rachel Reynolds and husband Andy, Lyndsey Giles and husband Doug, Jessica Poulin and husband Jared, Josh LaPointe, and Amanda LaPointe and partner Jimmy Page; great-grandchildren Cassidy, Courtney, Colby, Cooper, Cody, Chase, Chloe, Kaitlyn, Caleb, Jace, Joslyn, and Jude; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

BERTRAND BARD

FAIRFIELD – Bertrand “Bert” Bard, 73, of Fairfield, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. He was born in Fort Kent on November 15, 1944, the son of the late Alcide O. and Cecile (Robichaud) Bard.

He attended school in Fort Kent, and graduated Waterville Night School after being drafted to the United States Army. He served from September 1969 to January 8, 1971. Bertrand received the (National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Rifleman.

He married Jill (Steeves) Bard on October 16,1971, and moved to Fairfield. He owned and operated Bert’s Auto Body, in Winslow, until his retirement.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Jordan Bard, and a brother, Rosaire “Shoe” Bard.

DOROTHY A. BELANGER

FAIRFIELD – Dorothy Alice (Gwazdosky) Belanger passed away Wednesday August 15, 2018, at her home in Fairfield. She was born in Winslow on either January 30 or January 31, 1926. The ongoing debate over which day stems from the desire to have a different birthday than her twin, Doris. (Neither of whom ‘came over on the boat’ regardless of what they told you.) They were two of the 10 children born to Russian and Polish immigrants, Stephen and Olga (Kachnovich) Gwazdosky.

Dorothy graduated from Winslow High School in 1945, where her yearbook recognizes she and Doris’ penchant for confusing their teachers by trading places. Dorothy and Doris moved to Washington, DC, later that year to work as clerks for the federal government. Together they stood in front of the White House with thousands of others following the announcement that Japan had surrendered.

Dorothy moved back to Maine, met, fell in love with, and married Harold Belanger in 1951. The Winslow Black Raider had fallen for a Lawrence Bulldog who would not stray far from home. Dorothy and Harold raised five children and two businesses in Fairfield. They trademarked “Belanger’s Famous Tortiere Pies” in 1951. The pies were originally sold at Belanger’s Market which was run by Harold and his brother, Fred. Dorothy and Harold ran Belanger’s Drive-In and Dairy Bar from 1974 until their retirement in 1986. Not content to retire, Dorothy worked for several more years at Sounds Easy Video where she was once recognized as Employee of the Year. Dorothy also enjoyed participating in her Monday night bowling league winning several titles in the early 1990s.

Dorothy was predeceased her husband, Harold; her parents; six brothers, Nicolas, Alec, Joseph, William, Julius and John Gwazdosky, and three sisters, Doris Gwazdosky DeAngelis, Nellie McMahon and Luba Gwazdosky.

Dorothy is survived by her five children, Diane Veilleux, of Fairfield, Beckie Seeley and her husband Calvin, of Winslow, Linda Brown and her husband Gordon, of Rome, Russell Belanger and his wife Tina, of Fairfield, and Ruth Leigh and her husband Randy, of Fairfield; six grandchildren, Jenny Boyden and her husband Matt, of Clinton, Amy Foss and her husband Gerald, of Winslow, Tracy Leigh, of Windsor, Chelsea Brown, of Rochester, New York, Chace Belanger, of Portland, and Paige Belanger, of Fairfield; three great-grandchildren, Storer and Jillian Boyden, of Clinton and Cassidy Foss, of Winslow; and many nieces and nephews.

DENISE M. PELLETIER

WINDSOR – Denise M. Pelletier, 59, of Windsor, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018. Denise was born February 8, 1959, to parents Armand and Bertha Pelletier.

She grew up in Gardiner with eight siblings. She often spoke of helping her mom cook delicious homemade donuts and helping her dad with his horses. She attended Gardiner High School and worked for the State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle. Denise loved dearly her “girls” from work and her close friends who did so much for her while she battled breast cancer for nine years. Denise loved taking trips with her family and significant other. She enjoyed sewing quilts, doing crafts, woodworking, her flower garden, and could do anything she set her mind to.

Denise is described by so many as the strongest woman they will ever know. She was a great mother but also a best friend and confidant to her children. Her most precious love was her eight “grandbabies.”

She was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Jackson; her parents, Bertha and Armand Pelletier; and her grandmother, Alice Cote.

Denise is survived by her four children; Amy French and husband, Chris, with granddaughters, Ryleigh and Norah; Michelle Haskell and husband, Rodney, with granddaughter, Christina, and grandson, Codey; Penny Wilson with granddaughter, Elizabeth Dugas, and grandson, Teddy Walen; a son, Scott Wilson and wife, Deidra, with granddaughter, Mayla, and grandson, Matthew; her significant other, Paul Temple; two sisters, Sandra Lambert, Brenda Owens; five brothers, Norman, Dana, Larry and David Pelletier and Ricky Hume; along with many sisters- and brothers in-law, nieces and nephews.

PARKER M. STEVENS

OAKLAND – Parker Millard Stevens, 8, tragically passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Parker Millard Stevens was born September 30, 2009, to Wade and Sara Stevens.

Parker was a big brother to three younger siblings, Hunter, Denver and Tayler. He loved everyone and was loved by all. His smile would light up a room and his laugh was contagious.

Parker attended RSU#18 school district. He was well known for his kindness, love and compassion for all. He was involved in Big Brothers & Big Sisters, where he met his “Big Sister” Emily. They bonded right off, and Parker considered her his real sister. Parker enjoyed playing with his siblings, swimming, going to camp, playing Minecraft, and making videos. His dream was to have his own You Tube channel one day.

He is survived by his parents, Wade and Sara Stevens, of Oakland; siblings, Hunter, Denver and Tayler; grandparents, Deborah and Joe Stevens, of Oakland, Grace and Richard Doyon, of Oakland; Keith and Kim Easton, of Gardiner, and Julie Doyon, of Waterville; his Uncle Brandon, of Oakland; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

JANET M. DAVIS

SOUTH CHINA – Janet Mae Davis,76, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at MaineGeneral Hospital. She was born February 17, 1942, the daughter of William Fletcher and Minnie Fletcher, of Albion.

She grew up in Albion and lived in New Boston, New Hampshire for many years before returning to Maine in 2010. She had many talents, including tole painting and had a very green thumb. She loved her flower gardens, and anything green.

She was the main caregiver too her daughter Dallas and devoted her life to her health and happiness.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister Elaine Dionne, of Maine.

She is survived by her long-time companion Daniel McCormack, of South China; daughters Kim Hadley, of California, Kelly Drew, of Epping, New Hampshire, Dallas Davis, of South China; son Chuck Hadley, of Mont Vernon, New Hapshire; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Nancy Fletcher, Betty Fletcher, Margaret Lahey, Marion Ewin, Penny Fletcher; brothers William Fletcher, Mike Fletcher, Todd Fletcher and Mark Fletcher, all of Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

MILLARD A. HOWARD

PALERMO – Millard A. Howard, 82, passed away Friday, July 27, 2018, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born December 1, 1935 to Forrest and Malvina Howard.

He spent nearly his entire life living in Palermo leaving only for brief periods to attend school. Millard loved to read and developed a thirst for knowledge at a very young age. He graduated as valedictorian from Erskine Academy, continuing on to become the first in his family to attend college. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Clark University, again graduating with highest honors. He went on to attent a year at Harvard receiving a master of arts degree. While attending to his studies he began working for the state of Maine, taking a support position at a location known as “the farm” adjacent to the Augusta State Hospital, later AMHI. Upon graduation from Harvard, he began a career in mental health and public service with the Augusta State Hospital, holding several positions and moving the hospital forward until his retirement in the early 1990s.

He was also very active locally, serving as a selectman, a trustee at Erskine Academy, and being involved with numerous local organizations. He had a passion for history and genealogy. He was involved extensively with the Palermo Historical Society as well as having written, An Introduction to the Early History of Palermo, Maine, Second Edition.

While his health allowed, Millard enjoyed traveling, taking several trips to Europe. He was proud of where he came from and loved to serve his coounity in any way he could. Over his many years of travel he amassed an extensive library, occupying nearly all of his 3500 square foot barm. Although never married and having no children, Millard was exceptionally proud of his family and was ever involved in their lives.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Maurice and Milton.

He is survived by his nephew Mitchell Howard, of Yarmouth; and his great-nephews Vincent, Christian, and Charles Ireland.

B. JOAN GENEST

ALBION – B. Joan Genest, 80, of Albion, passed away at her home Saturday, July 28, 2018. She was born on December 10, 1937, the daughter of William A. and Phyllis (Graf) Morrison.

Joan grew up in Anson and went to school in Skowhegan. She graduated from Waterville High School.

Joan worked at C.F. Hathaway, Keyes Fibre and finally retired from Walmart, all in Waterville.

Joan enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors from gardening to feeding and watching her birds. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities.

Joan is survived by her husband of 30 years, Donald (Dale); a son Darryl (Skip) Prentiss and wife Brenda; brother William Morrison; stepchildren, Paula Locke and husband Tim, Dawn Marin, Karen Hilton, Todd Genest and wife Sherry; brothers-in-law, Mervin Green, Bob (Jeaninne), Mike (Peggy) Genest; sisters-in-law, Paula (Don) Carter and Cheryl (Steve) Mitchell; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

LOUIS F. PELLETIER

FAIRFIELD – Louis F. Pelletier, 90, passed away in his home on Sunday, July 29, 2019. He was born in Winterville on March 31, 1928, the son of Joseph and Rose (Raymond) Pelletier.

He served 20 plus years in the Army, serving during the Korean War and twice during the Vietnam war. He was very proud of his military career.

He returned to Maine in 1971, and worked as an auto mechanic, owning his own business, Pelletier’s Garage, for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to camp, socializing and being outside in nature.

He was predeceased by his parents; four brothers and five sisters; infant daughter, Sheryl Lyn; and son, Terry Pelletier.

RAYMOND P. GAY SR.

VASSALBORO – Raymond P. Gay, Sr., 79, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 29, 2018. Raymond was born in Augusta on January 15, 1939, son of the late Raymond and Edith (Anderson) Gay.

Raymond and Elizabeth were married January 31, 1959, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta.

Raymond had a great deal of love for the outdoors, including fishing in his boat, hunting up north, and camping with his family and friends. He’d often talk about his beloved fishing trips in Jackman and hunting caribou in Labrador. But, what Raymond loved the most in his life were his wife, his children and grandchildren. A true family man, Raymond devoted himself as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a step-in dad anytime he could. His heart was large and tender and many felt his fatherly love as if they were his own children. He was the kind of man that left a lasting impression and the little ones he leaves behind were truly the apple of his eye.

Raymond was employed by Statler Tissue, in Augusta, for 29 years after which he was employed by Michael Cayouette Flooring in Rockland before going to work for Mike taking care of the family farm in Vassalboro. Mr. Gay was predeceased by his son, Raymond P. Gay, Jr. on September 7, 2012; and two sisters, Margaret Gregoire and Sandra Pelletier.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; and three daughters, Brenda Cayouette and her husband Mike, Linda Collinson and her husband Bob, and Marilyn Poulin and her partner Brad Stover.

JEFFREY L. POOLER

FAIRFIELD – Jeffrey Lee Pooler, 56, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, following a cardiac event. Jeffrey was born September 7, 1962.

Jeff graduated from Lawrence High School in June 1981, where he excelled in basketball. He continued his education at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, earning a degree in machine tooling.

Following his graduation, he began a long, successful career as a CNC machinist working at Mid State Machine, Kennebec Tool and Die, and B&B Precise Products.

He had many passions; first among them his children and grandchildren. If you ask his family, friends, and neighbors what was most notable about him as a man, you’re likely to hear about his selfless generosity and steadfast willingness to help anyone in need. The remainder of Jeff’s heart was on China Lake at his grandparents’ camp; a place where so many priceless memories were made. From his youth patrolling the shores in his yellow one-man sailboat, to cherished times as a grown man fishing with his grandsons; he always fed a stream of joy and laughter to all lucky enough to be within earshot.

JOHN McALEER, 95, of Oldsmar, Florida, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018, in Oldsmar, Florida. John was born in Waterville on July 25, 1923, to Joseph and Tilly (MacAskill) McAleer. He was educated in Waterville schools. They spent their summers at Snow Pond (Messalonskee Lake), in Oakland. He retired from Maine Central Railroad, where he was a machinist and crane operator.

SUSAN A. ALLEIN

FAIRFIELD – Susan Allein died on Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

She had been ill in several ways for some time, but death came unexpectedly. Susan was born in Los Angeles, California, and attended schools in Alhambra, becoming a Top Twenty national champion debater before entering Occidental College. She came to New England and earned a master’s degree in literature at Brandeis University.

She taught in several venues, including the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, where she originated the Women’s Studies program. Returning to Boston, she continued to teach, including a period at Open Road School, a private school in Waltham serving young people uncomfortable in the public school system. She further honed her skills as a social activist, including the organization of a Boston contingent that went to New York City to join the million- person March Against Nuclear War in 1982.

In 1986, Susan and her husband moved to Fairfield, searching for and finding an idyllic home in the country. In a short time, Susan became a volunteer in the Displaced Homemakers program, later named Women, Work, and Community. She was hired as co-ordinator for the Waterville chapter and then became regional director of the program for several counties in central Maine where she continued for 15 years until her retirement in 2007.

Bright and articulate and generous in all ways, Susan Allein acted out her highest ideals, notably a passion for peace and for justice in the world.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Flanagan, brother Lewis, and sister Karen and Patrick and wife Bryn; brother-in-law Doug; sisters-in-law Valerie and Susan; and niece Catherine; and richard’s three children, Clancy, Jay, and Michael and their spouses and children.

DELORES M. FIELD

VASSALBORO – Delores Marie Field, 70, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018, following a long illness. She was born on October 10, 1947, in Waterville, the daughter of Carolyn Knowles and Thomas Elliott.

She grew up in Fairfield, spending her summers at her family camp on China Lake, along with her cousin and friend Stevie Elliott. She attended Fairfield schools and graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1965. On November 10, 1966, she married Rene Field, the day before he deployed to Vietnam for two years. Upon his return, they started and raised their family in Waterville, and later Vassalboro. For nearly 30 years, she worked as a papermaker for Scott Paper Company, in Winslow, and later S. D. Warren, in Hinckley.

Always kind, and never an ill word for anyone, she was always the first person to be there for her family and friends, both in times of joy and in times of sadness.

The life of the party with her infectious laugh and boisterous storytelling, her pool parties were must-attend events. And despite the sometimes grueling demands of her work schedule, she was always there for her children, from Little League to high school basketball, from music recitals to class plays, even if she had to sacrifice sleep following a long shift at work.

Delores is survived by her husband Rene Field; her father Thomas Elliott; her daughter Michele White and husband Bill; son Eric Field and wife Samira; grandchildren Dustin, Joshua, Hayden, Kiernan and Delany; great-grandchildren Karson, Avery and Harper; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; aunts, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother Carolyn; sister Esther Ellis and brother-in-law David Ellis, her brother Roger; in-laws Paul and Yvette Field; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

GERALD M. POTTLE

PALERMO – Gerald M. Pottle, 80, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018. He was born July 18, 1937, in Palermo, the son of Robert G. and Esther L. (Reed) Pottle.

Gerald was an over the road trucker, wood cutter––taking pulp to the mill every night. He also did earthwork, including airstrips a golf course,and many ponds––the last one being a work of art as a legacy to his family. His passion was flying his airplane.

He was married to Shirley (Barton) Pottle for 34 years. In 2005, he married Yvonne (Temple) Pottle.

He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley; his son David; his brother Norman; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife Yvonne; his brothers Robert (Bobby) Pottle, Neal and wife Theresa Pottle; children Sandra Gould and husband Steve, of Sherman, Lindy Bausch and husband Jarry, of Jewett City, Connecticut, Cindy Pottle, of Palermo, Donna Beaulieu and husband Steve, of Clinton; stepchildren Lisa Chambers and husband Donnie, of Burnham, Stan Garnett, of Vassalboro, Todd Garnett and wife Tina, of Knox; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

MARY ELLEN WENTZEL

VASSALBORO – Mary Ellen Wentzel, 86, died at her Vassalboro home on Sunday, June 24, 2018. She was born in Waterville on February 21, 1932, the last of six children of Eunice Myrtle (Pollard) French and Thomas Cowan French, who founded French’s Market Gardens, of South China, in 1937.

Mary attended elementary school in South China and graduated from South China’s Erskine Academy with the class of 1950, while also working on the family farm. In 1947, she met her future husband, Philip Martin Wentzel, of Augusta, at a dance at South China’s Lakeview Pavillion, prior to his tour of duty in Allied-occupied Japan with the Army of the United States. From 1950-1952, she studied at the School of Practical Art (Art Institute of Boston) and was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance.

On September 13, 1952, Mary married Philip Wentzel. They remained married for over 65 years until his death on February 6, 2018. They resided first in Augusta, then Weeks Mills and South China, and lastly in Vassalboro. Together they had three sons.

Mary’s many interests included showing and riding horses, sewing, home renovation and decorating-converting old houses into cherished family homes-and always supporting family and friends. Throughout her life she spent many hours volunteering at soup kitchens and churches, tending to the needy and creating a sense of community. In later years, she followed her spiritual calling to study the scriptures and lead Bible study groups both at home and at a variety of venues in central Maine. One of the highlights of Mary’s life was a month-long around-the-world tour in 1970, on which she visited numerous religious shrines.

With the great stamina and dedication instilled by her farm upbringing, Mary grew a large vegetable garden every year, froze or preserved the harvest, and provided her family with countless delicious home-cooked meals.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Philip;both of her parents; and her siblings, Thomas J. “Buster” French, Edward W. “Jim” French, Eunice E. Bernier and husband, Odilon A. “Pete” Bernier, Francis F. French and wife, Iona (Stein) (French) Weinstein, and Charlotte L. Page, and also by Peter O. Bernier, son of Eunice and Odilon.

She is survived by her three sons: Robert F. Wentzel and wife, Valerie Hunter, of Portland, Oregon, Thomas M. Wentzel and wife, Cynthia Meler, of Tucson, Arizona, and John P. Wentzel, of Vassalboro; former daughter-in-law, Nancy (Favor) (Wentzel) Phinney, of Santa Barbara, California; three grandsons: Robert and Nancy’s Lt. Col. (USAF) Jonathan F. and wife, Claire Wentzel, Maj. (USAF) James B. and wife, Kimberly Wentzel, and Robert and Valerie’s Joshua H. Wentzel; and four great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna Beth (Packard) (French) Rynders, of Waterville, Paul H. Page, of South China, Lola (Wentzel) (Houston) Harris, of Berkeley, California, Arthur Clark, of Belgrade; and by many nieces and nephews and their families.

LEROY BLOOD

WINSLOW – Leroy “Roy” Blood, 85, passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Glenridge Long Term Care, in Augusta.

For the past couple of years Leroy suffered from Alzheimer’s and resided at the Woodlands, in Hallowell, before moving to Glenridge. Prior to moving to the Woodlands Assisted Living Facility, Roy required care at his residence in Winslow.

Roy was born on March 18, 1933, in Belmont. He was the son of Mary and Milo Blood.

He graduated from Unity High School and was drafted in the U.S. Army during the time of the Korean War and became a member of the American Legion. AT the age of 19, he married the former Margaret Giggey.

After being discharged from the army, Leroy and Margaret returned to Maine where he attended college at the University of Maine in Orono. He graduated with a B.S. degree in education followed by a master’s degree in education. His first teaching assignment was at Bucksport High School teaching agriculture. Roy returned to the University of Maine and earned his C.A.S. in Administration. His first job as a principal was at Newport High School. He decided to leave Newport High School and he took a position as principal of Winslow High School. Leroy worked in this position for 26 years. During this time, he once again returned to the University of Maine and earned his superintendent degree. After serving as principal, Leroy decided to retire but he just couldn’t keep away from what he loved to do. After retiring for one week, he accepted another position at Kennebec Valley Technical College developing a technical program for kids called Tech Prep. He worked there for seventeen years

Roy was secretary for Kennebec Valley Conference Athletic Directors. He was a member of the Maine Principal’s Association. A highlight of his educational career was when he was chosen Principal of the Year.

In his spare time, Leroy enjoyed watching and betting on harness racing. He and his son, Steven, owned race horses for years. Roy was a member of the United States Trotting Association. He also served on the Maine Breeders Stakes Committee.

Leroy was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Celtics, and the New England Patriots. He especially enjoyed playing golf. Roy also loved to deer hunt.
He enjoyed hunting with his father Milo and his brothers Clayton, Stanley and Maurice. He and Margaret also loved to travel.

For years, Leroy was a member of St. John Catholic Church, in Winslow, where he and his family attended Mass on Sundays.

Leroy is survived by his son, Steven Blood and his wife, Lara, of Winslow; his daughter Elaine Knowlen and husband, Scott, and his granddaughter, Katie, of Winslow; his brother, Clayton Blood and wife, Barbara, of Searsport; his brother, Stanley Blood, of Belfast; his brother-in-law, Clayton Giggey and wife, Mildred, of Waterville; his sister-in-law, Ruth Blood, of Skowhegan; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, Margaret, he was predeceased by his brother Maurice, his sister Carol, his parents, Mary and Milo, mother-in-law Mildred Pottle and father-in-law Maurice Pottle.

DANA L. JONES, of Fairfield, passed away recently. Dana was noted as part of a tandem with the late Rodney Fernald, as the Zamboni drivers at Colby’s Alfond Ice Arena. He was told he had the best ice in the northeast.

JOHN “SWISHER” MITCHELL, 91, of Waterville, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. A larger than life figure, John became one of the most famous and accomplished athletes in Maine while attending Waterville High School, leading the 1944 team to an undefeated season and the New England high school basketball championship. He later became assistant to legendary head coach Dick Whitmore at Colby College, in Waterville, for 40 years.
