CARLEEN E. COTE

VASSALBORO – Carleen E. Cote, 78, of North Belfast Ave., died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 27, 2018, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was born in Caribou on April 27, 1940, the daughter of Alfred Sirois and Esther (Raymond) Sirois.

Carlene graduated from Belgrade High School and Augusta Business College.

She was employed for 19 years by the Maine Department of Mental Health and Retardation, and for 10 years by the Maine Department of Health & Welfare.

She lovingly dedicated her life to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release along with her husband Don, at the Duck Pond Animal Rehabilitation Center, in Vassalboro.

Carleen was a member of Northeast Zoological Society (secretary for five years), National Wildlife Federation, Wildlife Legislative Fund of America, Sportsmans Alliance of Maine board of directors for four years, secretary for two years and second vice-president for one year).

Carleen was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Esther Galvin and Alfreda Johnson, and a brother, Gerald Sirois.

Surviving is her husband, Donald P. Cote, of Vassalboro; one sister Jeanine Dostie, of Augusta; one brother, Gary Sirois, of Belgrade; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no planned visiting hours. A service may be held at a later date.

DESIREE J. YORK

KNOX – Desiree J. York, 36, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018, in Bangor. She was born May 21, 1981, in Waterville, the daughter of Donald R. and Brenda L. (Carter) York.

She attended Mt. View High School, in Thorndike. She studied for two years in vocational school with a major in childcare. She loved racing, camping, cooking, music and being with family and friends.

Desiree is survived by her daughter, Miracle Jean Littlefield, of Knox; parents, Donald and Brenda York of Knox; five brothers, Donald York Jr., of Benton, Dallas York and fiancée Cassie Sweden, of Addison, Jason York, Lance York and wife Nickki, and Jeffrey Richards and wife Michelle, all of Vassalboro; two sisters, Torie York, of Bangor, and Danyelle Willette, of Waterville; grandfather Warren York, of Waterville; aunt and uncle Richard and Paulette Carter, of Albion; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and ousins.

She was predeceased by her grandfather Richard Carter, and grandmothers Rita York and Mary Jean Carter.

GERALD GIROUX

WINSLOW––Gerald T. Giroux, 86, of Winslow, died Friday, April 6, 2018, at his home, following an intense battle with cancer. He was born July 1, 1931, in Disraeli, Quebec, the youngest of 14 children of Eugene Giroux and Georgianna (Jacques) Giroux.

He attended school in Disraeli. He was employed at Colby College, in Waterville, for over 25 years. The family owned their own newspaper business for over 35 years, and he was quite well known by many for his several years of delivering newspapers on a daily basis. He, along with his family, currently owns Berry’s Stationery, in Waterville. There, he enjoyed working alongside his family members, putting frames together, and, of course, socializing with the customers.

He married Yvette, in 1964 and they spent 44 years together until her death in 2008. They raised two children and their grandchildren, with whom they were very close and always together. He spent many years attending events, cheering on his children and grandchildren and supporting them in every way.

Pepere was a man of deep Catholic faith. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Winslow Council #7300. He was a member of the 4th Degree Assembly #341. He was a communicant of Corpus Christi Parish.

Survivors include his children Michael W. Giroux and wife Barbara, of Augusta, Michelle A. Giroux-Paré and husband Rick, of Winslow; grandchildren Daniel, Dorothy, Anne, and Dominique Giroux-Paré, and Stephanie Pinkham and Nicholas Masse; one brother Robert and wife Lorraine, of Disraeli, Quebec, Canada; one sister Gabrielle Laflam, of Beaulac, Quebec, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Yvette; parents; five brothers, Ernest, Lucien, Louis, Fernand, and Clement, and six sisters, Rene, Cecile, Marie, Therese, Rollande, and Aline.

GILBERT L. RAYMOND

BENTON––Gilbert “Gil” Raymond, 65, of Benton, passed away Friday, April 6, 2018, at his home. He was born January 15, 1953, the son of Irenie and Regina Raymond, in Fort Kent.

He graduated from Waterville High School in 1972. He married his soul mate, Susan Letourneau, in 1971. He worked as a millwright at local paper companies for many years, retiring in 2015.

Following retirement, he was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed as he was a talented carpenter and mechanic.

Gil enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards, especially when doing these things with his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan; daughters Jennifer Heath and husband Brian, Jessica Huard and husband Edward; three granddaughters, the joys of his life, Lauren, Lily and Scarlett; sisters Jeannine Genest and husband Robert, Jackie Raymond, Doraline “Lulu” Begin and husband Bruce, and Marie Raymond Carrier; four special aunts, Cecile Morrill, Rena Adams, Lucille Raymond and Cecile Theriault.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Reta Raymond.

There will be a memorial service held at Shawmut Chapel, 57 Bray Ave., Shawmut, ME 04975, on Saturday May 5, 2018, at 11 a.m.

PAULA VEILLEUX

WINSLOW––Paula Veilleux, 86, of Winslow, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Avita, of Wells, following a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on April 23, 1931, in Maria, Quebec, one of eight children of Eveline (Guite) and Leonard Bujold.

She came to Waterville in 1947, and worked as a seamstress at C. F. Hathaway, in Waterville. At the age of 19, she met her husband, James Veilleux, at the roller rink. They were happily married for 58 years. Together they had six children.

Paula was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She was also employed as a seamstress at The Curtainshop for many years. She was well-known for her mending skills within her family, friends and community.

She and James maintained a large vegetable garden, and canned a good portion of their produce. She was an excellent cook, known for her signature spaghetti sauce, and always enjoyed trying new recipes.

She also taught CCD at St. John Catholic School, in Winslow, for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards, going for walks, dancing, swimming, and spending time with her family.

Paula will be remembered as a gentle and loving woman, who was patient, and had a great sense of humor.

Paula is survived by her six children, David Veilleux, of Dover, New Hampshire, Dana Veilleux, of Somersworth, New Hampshire, Michelle Vigue and husband Michael, of North Waterboro, Alan Veilleux, of Winslow, Lee Veilleux and wife Stacy, of Scarborough, and Eileen Veilleux, of Westbrook; nine grandchildren, Mitchell, Dylan, Thomas, Melissa, Nicholas, Danielle, Brianna, Desirée, and Taylor; seven brothers and sisters, Adrienne Desveaux and husband Ted, of Westbrook, Sr. Dorothy Bujold, of Waterville, Leo Bujold and wife Olivette, of Skowhegan, Noella Pelletier and husband Charles, of Winslow, Fern Bard and husband Leland, of Waterville. Harvey Bujold and partner Karen Nagle, of Bonita Springs, Florida; Sr. Rita Bujold, ofFrance; as well as several nieces and nephews.

PHILIP D. CHAMBERLAIN

WINSLOW––Philip D. Chamberlain, 92, passed away in Waterville on Sunday, April 8, 2018. Phil was born in Exeter, on May 6, 1925, the son of Paul and Ethel (Rowe) Chamberlain.

Phil attended school in Exeter and graduated from East Corinth Academy. He served in the US Army during World Ward II from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged.

He worked in Dexter at the Fay Scott factory and then went on to Keyes Fibre, in Waterville, where he worked as a pattern maker until 1988 when he retired. Phil enjoyed reading, bowling, wood working, snowmobiling, and even skiing in his late 60s.

People who knew Phil recognized him as a quiet, genuine and honest person who loved his family, home and country.

Phil was predeceased by his first wife, Charlene (Annett); son Terry Chamberlain; brother Stanley Chamberlain; and stepson Jay Aubin.

He is survived by his wife Nancy (Willette), who whom he celebrated 31 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter Sharon Barnett and husband Ben, of South Carolina, step-son Jeff Aubin and wife Char-lin, of St. Albans and step-son Joel Aubin, of Arizona.

CLARENCE S. BENNER

BENTON––Clarence Stewart “Stu” Benner, 73, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018, at his residence. Clarence was born in Bath, on November 3, 1944, son of Clarence and Carolyn Benner.

He graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1963. He then joined the Army in 1965 serving in Korea until 1957.

He grew up spending time at Christmas Cove with his grandparents. He enjoyed family gatherings, attending his grandchildren’s events and you could always find him at Bee’s Diner.

Clarence was a longtime truck driver for many different companies.

Clarence was predeceased by his parents and his brother Merle Benner.

WINSLOW––Francis LaBrecque Jr., 91, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, in Waterville. Francis was born in Waterville, on June 22, 1926, the son of Francis and Deliska LaBrecque.

“Frank” proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on a PT boat during World War II. He retired from Scott Paper Company in 1987, after 40 years of service.

Francis really enjoyed the hours he spent fishing on First Roach Pond “up river.”

Frank was predeceased by his first wife, Anita (Caron); his brothers, Ovila, Lawrence and Joseph, and his sister, Julie.

DAVID L. LOVERING SR.

SOUTH CHINA––David Lee Lovering Sr., 72, of South China, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at his home. He was born in Augusta, August 17, 1945, the son of Sidney and Pauline Lovering.

He grew up in China and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965.

After being discharged, David became a professional truck driver working both short and long haul. He and his wife, Carlaine Bovio, worked as a driving team for many years, travelling all over the United States. When he wasn’t working, David enjoyed going to car shows. To his family, he was known as “Grumpy.”

David was predeceased by his parents, Sidney and Pauling.

He is survived by his wife, Carlaine; son, David Lee Lovering Jr. and wife Shannon, of Palmyra; daughters, Lisa Lovering, of Buxton, Sheri Lovering, of Key West, Florida, and Kelly Murray and husband Chris, of Bangor; stepchildren, John Starkey and his fiancée Shekeria Anthony, of Skowhegan; and Tina Kennedy and husband Patrick, of Unity; grandchildren, Skylar, Morgan, Allison, Kaitlyn, Hunter, Autumn, Dominic, Zachary, Emme, Elizabeth, Michael, Aidan and Cheyenne; and two great-grandchildren.

JOYCE M. BARKER

WINSLOW––Joyce Marilyn Barker, 61, of Winslow, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Lahey Hospital. She was born in Bridgton, February 4, 1957, to the late Almon and Norine (Sturgis) Barker.

She lived and grew up in Naples, attending Lake Region High School where she played several sports, sang in the chorus and played the baritone both in school and with the Bridgton Town Band. Her favorite teacher in high school, Eugene Whitney, sparked her interest in biology and inspired her to continue studying at the University of Maine in Orono, where she earned her B.S. degree in biology and English and education. She later earned endorsements in life, physical and general science, and language arts.

She taught middle school students in MSADs #47 and #3 until retiring in 2012. During this time she was a hands-on teacher who was twice nominated for the Presidential award for Teaching Excellence in Math and Science and, in 1990, was a semi-finalist for Maine State Teacher of the Year. She also held many advisory and supervisory positions to help both students and teachers.

Joyce loved all of nature and the works of the Maine Audubon Society and the Sea Turtle Rescue and Recovery.

Joyce is survived by her brother, David (Donna Pitts) Barker; sisters, Linda (Michael) Koloski, Rosalie Fredericks, Bette (Steve) York, Janet (Peter) Richardson and Debora Sylvester, 12 nieces and nephews, 14 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

WILLIAM P. CROCE

FAIRFIELD––William “Bill” Paul Croce, 71, of Fairfield, died Monday, April 15, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home, in Scarborough. Born in Skowhegan on April 11, 1947, he was a son of Carl G. and Beth Tewksbury Croce.

In 1950, Bill and his family moved to Waterville. He was a graduate of Waterville High School in the class of 1966. Bill furthered his education at Wentworth Institute, in Boston, and Ohio State University, studying aeronautical engineering. He graduated with two associates degrees in engineering and went on to work for Pratt and Whitney, in Connecticut.

Dedicated to his country, Bill served in the Army Reserves from 1970-1976 in the position of drill sergeant. The people of Waterville and surrounding towns will remember Bill from Peter Webber Sports, a staple on Main Street, which Bill managed and then owned for more than a decade. He then moved on to work at the Maine Department of Transportation, Bureau of Planning, a position he held until retirement in 2010.

Bill was a man of varied interests; a Jack-of-all-Trades and master of many! Carpentry, music, hiking, sailing, skiing and flying were among those at which he excelled and found greatest happiness. “Through these avenues, Bill and his wife, Jean, were able to open their world to countless new friends they claimed as family. Bill was known as a captivating and humorous storyteller of adventures (and misadventures!) both experienced and imagined. Humor was such a part of who he was and no gathering was complete without it.

As avid skiers, Bill and his family broke ground at Sugarloaf, building a home and creating a life there that formed invaluable memories and friendships that still hold strong today. His love of skiing matched by his love for sailing, Bill and Jean enjoyed many sailing trips to the British Virgin Islands. In 2016, the two embarked on their biggest adventure yet: sailing from Rockland to Florida, where many new friendships were created.

When Bill was not traveling around, he volunteered his time building sets for shows at the Waterville Opera House and Aqua City Actors Theatre.

Bill is survived by his wife Jean Poirier Croce, of Fairfield; a daughter Lisa Croce, of Portland and a son Tim Croce, of Waterville; brother Carl A. Croce and wife Janet, of Winslow, and their adult children. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and Poirier in-laws.

ALICE J. MAHEUX

WINDSOR––Alice J. Maheux, 87, of the Bean road, died Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Country Manor Nursing Home, in Whitefield, following an extended illness. She was born in Sidney on June 4, 1930, the daughter of William Hughes and Margaret (Sawtelle) Hughes.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs.. Maheux was employed by Bates Manufacturing Co. for 40 years.

She was predeceased by her parents; three brothers: Robert, Myron and Phillip Hughes; and sister Phyllis Tremblay.

Surviving are four daughters: Elaine M. Chase and Betty Bowden, both of Vassalboro, Rita Dyer, of Waterboro, and Barbara A. Maheux, of Springvale; 13 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; one sister, Arlene Fossett, of Augusta.

RANDOLPH V. PAMPHREY

FAIRFIELD––Randolph Von Pamphrey, 51, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, following a brief illness. Randy was born in Waterville, on December 7, 1966, to Pamela (Libby) and Larry Pamphrey.

He attended school in Leeds, Clinton, and Fairfield; graduated from Lawrence High School in 1985 and attended the University Southern Maine for one year. While at Lawrence, Randy was well-known for his athletic achievements in football, basketball, baseball and track.

Randy worked in many trades over the years, such as landscaping, dock building, and photography. Widely known for his ability to catch a beautiful moment or emotion on film, Randy used his skill in photography to bring joy to so many. It’s what kept him connected to the community, his friends, family and the spirit of LHS. Randy’s creative nature was also found in his interest in collections, gardening and cooking. He had a keen eye for antiques, unusual trinkets and rocks, and had his father’s skill in gardening which led to an interest in cooking.

Friendships came easy to Randy. Everyone who knew him considered him a friend; he was generous, kind-hearted, and honest. Never one to say a negative thing about another person, Randy was easy to trust and confide in. Randy earned his black belt in karate from Huard’s in Winslow.

Randy is survived by his mother, Pamela (Libby) Pamphrey; father, Larry Pamphrey; son, Derek Pamphrey, of Fairfield; sister, Libbi Pamphrey, of South Portland; sister, Heather Wilson and husband Dan, of Fairfield; brother, Kenneth Pamphrey, of Fairfield; nephew, Jake Wilson and wife, Jessica, of Benton; nieces, Samantha and Summer, of Fairfield; many cousins, aunts, and uncles.

LANCE J. ANDERSON

WINSLOW––Lance John Anderson, 71, of Winslow, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in Powell, Tenne­ssee. Lance was on vacation with his wife, when he succumbed to pneumonia due to respiratory ailments that had been challenging him for years. Lance was born on February 18, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Alverne Stanley Anderson and Winifred (Beckett) Anderson.

His family moved to Maine in 1952 eventually settling in East Vassalboro. Lance graduated from Waterville High School, in 1967, and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1971. He worked in the Merchant Marines for over 30 years ultimately becoming a chief engineer. For several years he worked in paper mills in Berlin, New Hampshire and Lincoln and Rumford

Lance had a great love for animals, duck and bird hunting, R. C. planes, photography, and music. He also enjoyed driving up North to camp and boating on China Lake. On weekend mornings, for many years, he could be found drinking coffee down at Freddie’s Garage, in East Vassalboro. He had a life-long admiration for aviation that he inherited from his father. Upon retirement, he achieved his dream of building an airplane and obtaining his pilot’s license-an accomplishment that brought him great pride when he was able to filmy his wife and children over the great state of Maine. Lance was a member of Vassalboro Lodge No. 0054 AFT & AM.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane; one daughter Lisa and husband John Costanza, of Bolton, Massachusetts; one son, Eric Anderson and his wife Julia Page, of Brooklyn, New York; one sister Karen and her husband James Dunbar, of Winslow; two grandsons Nicholas and Garrison Constanzo; on granddaughter Sadie Page; brothers-in-law Ronald Michaud and wife Geraldine, of Waterville, Reginald Michaud and wife Marilyn, of Smithfield, and James Michaud and wife Cheryl, of Westbrook; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to Lance’s graveside service and celebration of life, Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Saint Francis Cemetery, 78 Grove St., Waterville, at 11:30 a.m. All are invited to the reception immediately following at Centerpoint Community Church, 155 West River Rd., Waterville. JAMES D. THOMSON

OAKLAND – James D. Thomson died suddenly on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Florida Hospital, in Zephyrhills, Florida. James was born April 7, 1943, to Shirley L (Brann) and James A. Thomson Jr. in Waterville.

Jim was raised in Winslow and graduated from Winslow High School in 1962. He and Mary Ann married in 1963. He was a man of many trades. Jim worked for Scott Paper Co., in Winslow, for 27 years. He had worked his way up to the materials and supplies supervisor by the time he retired. Jim and Mary Ann then bought The Blueberry Shop, in Brooks. They made hand-painted blueberry ceramic ware which was sold in many shops in Maine, including L.L.Bean, especially along the coast. After selling the business, Jim went to work for Waterville Window Co., in Winslow, for five years.

In 1976, the Thomson’s family started making outdoor adventures in Rangeley, from a camp on Dodge Pond. For the next 20 years, the family spent many hours downhill skiing at Saddleback; fishing on all the lakes and streams; and, once a year, spending a weekend fly fishing on ponds only reachable by plane. Many vacations, holidays and a few honeymoons were spent in that incredible four-season wonderland.

In 2006, Jim and Mary Ann bought a camper and a GMC Yukon and hit the road. Jim was predeceased by his parents.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Miller), of Oakland; his daughter and her husband, Kathy and Kevin Gray, of Oakland; granddaughter, Alison Gray; and great-grandchildren, Trapper Jay and Savannah Delia Bellavance, all of Oakland; grandson, James J. Gray, of Oakland; and great-granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Chloe Gray; brothers, David and wife, Lisa Thomson, of Sidney; and Robert Thomson, of Hensley, Arkansas; his sisters, Valerie Conaway, of Casselberry, Florida; Jesse Rowe, of Virginia; and Judy and Mike (husband) Achorn, of Benton; nephew and godson, Eddie Rowe Jr. (“E.J.”); many nieces and nephews.

EVELYN E. GIGUERE

OAKLAND – Evelyn Elizabeth Giguere, 95, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at her home. She was born on July 18, 1922, to Anna Elizabeth Szabo Grezsler and Stephen Joseph Greszler who were both immigrants from Hungary.

Evelyn was born and attended school in Henrietta Township, Ohio, and did not learn to speak English until her first year at school. She loved school and placed 17th in Latin on an exam administered state-wide. She attended Elyria Business College in Ohio.

Evelyn met her husband, Bernard, through her brother who was stationed in Panama with him. They exchanged letters and finally met in Ohio where they became engaged, married, and started their family. Shortly after they moved to Bernard’s home state of Maine where Evelyn fell in love with the Pine Tree state, Bernard built their first home, which was a log cabin. Throughout their 64 years of marriage, they resided in several different homes in Maine, Ohio, and Florida. Evelyn worked side-by-side in life with Bernard, including working in the woods, and was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.

One of Evelyn’s favorite pastimes was being with her family, whether it was camping, fishing, holiday gatherings, weddings, or just sitting around the kitchen table. She loved the outdoors and was passionate about gardening, harvesting, canning, and preparing wonderful home-cooked meals. Evelyn loved to dance with her husband and one of her happiest memories was her re-marriage to Bernard on their 60th anniversary and the festivities that followed. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and devotedly prayed for her loved ones. Evelyn touched many lives with her smile and loving personality and will be fondly remembered my many.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Giguere; siblings, Peter, Joe, Frank, Ann, Deszo, Agatha, Alex, and Margaret; grandchildren, Aymie and Mariah; and a great- grandson, Fred.

OAKLAND – Vernal Edward Hight, Jr., 72, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at his home. He was born May 11, 1945, in Hartland, the son of Vernal Edward Sr. and Shirley Elaine (Farmer) Davis, stepson of Elwin Davis.

Vernal “Jr.” was a graduate of Solon High School, class of 1963, and graduated from Skowhegan Business School in 1965. On April 2, 1966, he married Barbara Burns at the Baptist Church, in Madison. He was employed for over 30 years at Downeast Energy. Vernal, Jr. cherished time spent with his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His grandchildren were his biggest interest.

Vernal, “Jr.” is predeceased by his mother, father, and stepfather.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara (Burns) Hight, of Oakland; three daughters, Chandra Hight, of Waterville, Sandra Hight, of Fairfield, and Helen Hart (Erik Hart), of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sons, Michael Hight (Ami-Lyn Robinson), of Waterville, Matthew Hight (Margaret Lee), of Waterville; brother, Frances “Jimmy” Hight (Nancy Hight), of Corinna; two sisters, Betty Wing, of Oakland, Joyce Perkins (Richard Perkins), of Waterville; three grandchildren, Sydney Grandmaison, of Fairfield, Mackenzie and Jackson Hart, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and six step-grandchildren, Zachary and Matthew Gardner, of Waterville, Patrick and Isabel-Lyn Robinson, of Waterville, Cody Ouellette, of Oakland, and Allee Larochelle, of Waterville, as well as many nieces and nephews.

BENTON – Randy Damren, 56, of Benton, passed away at his hone, on Friday, February 23, 2018, following a long battle with diabetes. He was born on May 4, 1961, the son of Bunnie Damren and the late Richard Damren, of Norridgewock.

Upon graduation from Skowhegan Area High School, Randy served in the U. S. Navy.

Randy will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, especially fishing.

He is survived by his son, Richard R. GERTRUDE M. BERNARD

WINSLOW – Gertrude M. Bernard died on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, following a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Alexandre and Maria (LaFlamme) Bernard.

She was an alumni of Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and graduated magna cum laude. She did post-graduate studies at Boston University.

She graduated as a cadet nurse during World War II. Following a long career in nursing as an instructor at Metro General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and at St. Margaret Hospital in Boston, she retired, and returned to Winslow to be with her family.

Gertrude leaves a legacy of abundant generosity and unwavering faith; love of nature, especially animals and flowers. She was a very accomplished singer, having sung with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. She was a long-active member of her church choir and several other choral groups.

She was predeceased by her parents; four sisters, Florentine, Cecile, Marie Ange, and Laurette Kickham; and three brothers, Roy, Gerald, and Victor Bernard.

She is survived by one sister, Madeline Vigue, of Winslow; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and their families.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, 26 Monument St., Winslow, at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018, and interment at St. Francis Cemetery, in Waterville.

EAST VASSALBORO – Nick Scott, 84, died on Friday, March 23, 2018. He was born in London, England on September 11, 1933. He served in the Royal Air Force, and was a Professor of Theater at University of Maine Farmington for 28 years.

He leaves behind his children, step-children, many grandchildren, and Vivian, his life partner for the past 11.5 years.

EVELYN M. FRAZIER

WINSLOW – Evelyn M. Frazier, 95, passed away on Monday, March 26, 2018. She was born July 24, 1922, in Winslow, the daughter of George and Florida (Quirion) Melanson.

As a young girl she went to work to help support her parents and siblings. She worked as a waitress in her father’s restaurant, The Central Maine Café, among many other Waterville Main Street restaurants. She also worked at C. F. Hathaway, in Waterville, for 28 years and was voted president of the union, local #486, in which she served many terms. She was the former Regent of the Joan of Arc circle, Daughters of Isabella, of Fairfield, as well as a member of the Volunteers of GOD. She was the Grand Warden of the State of Maine chapter for the New England Order Of Protection. She belonged to the Maine Counsel of Senior Citizens, and was also a member of the National Counsel. She was always an advocate for the working class.

She was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Corpus Christi parish.

Her faith was very important to her, she was a very devout Catholic.

She married Shirley Otis Frazier in 1943. They had six children. He predeceased her in 1991. She was also predeceased by five sisters: Carmeline Languet, Irene King, Violette Boulette Sheehan, Lucille Roy Sinclair, Bernadette Melanson; two brothers Robert and Harold Melanson; infant son Bruce; daughter Linda; grandson John Gush; and recently her son Vernon Frazier.

She is survived by her two daughters: Nancy Johnston, of Maine, Bunny Brier, of Idaho; and her son Robert Frazier, of Maine; grandchildren: Tammy, Debra, Sonya, Troy, Bruce, Brian, Laurie, Tracey, Kathleen, Karen, Jeff, Jennifer, and Christopher; many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law Donna Frazier; and many nieces and nephews. including nephew Dick Martineau, who helped her for many years with her property.

RACHEL M. (BUMPS) CUNNINGHAM, 94, of Waterville, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center. She was born on October 21, 1923, to Arvide and Susie (Martin) Bumps, on the family farm in China. She was employed with the China School Department from 1957 until her retirement in 1992. She worked as a cook in the cafeteria and drive a school bus.

CHARLOTTE L. PAGE

SOUTH CHINA – Charlotte L. Page, 89, of South China, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018, at her home. She was the daughter of Thomas and Myrtle (Pollard) French, who ran French’s Market Garden, on Rte. 32, in South China, for many years.

Charlotte was no stranger to hard work. As a child she worked on the family farm. Following her marriage to Paul H. Page, in 1948, she continued to work on the farm, as well as at Hazard Shoe Factory, and C.F. Hathaway Shirt Factory, in Waterville. She assisted Paul in various ways in his business ventures of chainsaw repair, logging, plowing snow for the town of China and Page Construction Co.

She was active in LAPM and LEA, serving as president of each for a year, and was also involved in the Order of Amaranth where she served as Matron.

She and Paul enjoyed 18 winters in Florida and they traveled extensively to many states over the years, including to Virginia, where they were honored to be chosen to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Her passions in life were caring for her family, cooking, gardening, knitting and reading.

She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Paul H. Page, of South China; sons Gordon P. Page Sr. and wife Debbie, Joseph P. Page and wife Mary Jane, and Stephen M. Page, all of South China; sister Mary Wentzel, of Vassalboro; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

On March 11, there was a private service at her home for family and a few close friends. It was officiated by Pastor Bill Meyer and arrangements were made by Lawry Bros., of Fairfield. There will be a spring interment at Chadwick Hill Cemetery.

WINSLOW – Paul A. Reid, 78, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, following a long, courageous battle with cancer, at Mt. Saint Joseph’s, in Waterville. He was born February 6, 1940, the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Gerald) Reid.

He received his GED from Waterville High School and furthered his education at the University of Maine at Farmington.

His greatest passion was reading and reminiscing about childhood memories. Paul could always put a smile on your face.

VASSALBORO – Cheryl Socquet, 71, of Vassalboro, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018, following a brief illness.

Hers was a life well lived, almost entirely for the sake of family and friends for whom she was unfailingly the rock and the glue, a scrupulous confidante and gentle adviser, a steady guide and earnest supporter. She always gave much, much more than she took, and left an indelible mark on everyone she touched.

JOHN T. BOUCHARD

WINSLOW – John T. Bouchard, 78 of Winslow, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018, following a brief stay at Mt. St. Joseph, in Waterville. He was born in Waterville on December 21, 1939, to John and Marguerite (Boudreau) Bouchard.

He was raised in Fairfield and graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1958. He joined the Marine Corps in March of 1959, and was honorably discharged in March 1963. He was proud to be a Marine and wore the uniform with honor. Following his discharge, he worked for the state of Maine for a short time.

On May 30, 1966, he married Jean (Caron) and started their life together.

They settled down in Winslow where they raised their three children. He enjoyed taking several trips with his family and supported his children in their numerous activities ranging from coaching, driving bus for the hockey team, watching dance recitals and just being a spectator. He loved to cheer on the Winslow Black Raiders football team, sitting in his usual spot on the bleachers for years.

John was employed at the Waterville Post Office as a letter carrier for over 30 years. After retiring, he had a few part-time jobs including a self-employed small engine repair business at his home. He always stayed busy whether it be mowing lawns, working in his shed and going for a walk. He was a usual site in the neighborhood taking several walks a day. On occasion, he would meet members of his class for lunch to socialize and stay in touch. John was also a member of the Bourque-Lanigan American Legion Post #5, in Waterville.

John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean; his three children, Thomas Bouchard and his wife Rose, Karen Carpenter and her husband Brian, and Mark Bouchard and his wife Esther; grandchildren, Erika Bouchard and fiancé Joel, Justin Bouchard and fiancée Kelly, Michael Carpenter, Malea Bouchard, Marissa Carpenter, Dylon Bouchard, William Alger and Victoria Bouchard; two brothers, Reginald Bouchard, Leo Bouchard and wife Linda; and one sister, Lucille Beaulieu.

He was predeceased by his father John, his mother Marguerite; two brothers, Francis Bouchard and David Bouchard; and grandchild Jeremy Carpenter.

FAIRFIELD – Allen A. Risinger, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at his home. Allen was born on August 12, 1948, the son of Augustine and Parmelie.

He worked as a mechanic for Central Maine Motors for 37 years until his retirement four years ago. He was a jack-of-all-trades, loved working in his home garage for hours, he was an avid hunter, and loved his family and all the time spent with each one of them.

Allen was predeceased by his parents.

JULIETTE T. VEILLEUX

WINSLOW – Juliette (Judy) Veilleux, 88, died on Monday, March 12, 2018, at Mt. Saint Joseph Nursing Home, in Waterville. Juliette was born in Waterville on May 30, 1929, to the late Placid and Georgiana (Trahan) Gagne.

She grew up in a family of six children, with four sisters and one brother. From an early age she learned the importance of family. From , in Waterville, she grew to be a compassionate, caring and giving person, with a strong faith in God. She was dedicated to her faith and continued to go to Mass every Sunday until she was no longer able, only a few months before her death.

She married Gerald J. Veilleux, on August 16, 1947. Together they would raise eight children. Family was her life. She was amazing to watch. Though tiny in stature her children were no match for this tough little lady. She ran their house like clockwork, all the while volunteering to bake for classes, attending games and school events, and was never too busy to help a family member or a friend in need. Her house was immaculate, believing indeed that “cleanliness is next to godliness.”

She especially loved holidays and would spend hours decorating so that the ‘kids’ would be excited when they arrived to see what she had done.

She was a fun-loving person, full of life and always on the go. Her giggles were contagious and often took little more than a sip of a margarita and the flood gates would open. She was quick with a joke and loved to tease, especially her sister Anita. The two could hardly sit beside each other before the laughter and bantering began. She and her siblings remained close as adults and Juliette treasured the times they were together – always fun, always laughter, and always food.

Juliette was a tremendous cook and she loved it. She took great joy in feeding anyone and everyone who happened to be at the house at suppertime. And you had better have an appetite. Refusing seconds meant you didn’t like the food and she may well have cooked something else for you right then and there. She had many great recipes but her famous peanut butter fudge surely tops the list. And though many have tried, there are very few who can make it “just like Mem.”

Along with the full time job of raising her family, she also worked for a time as an LPN at the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital, caring for others as she did her family. As the children got older she went to work at Stern’s Department Store, in downtown Waterville, at the cosmetic counter. She was the ‘face’ of the department, women wanting to buy whatever she used so they could get their skin to be as beautiful as hers. She loved working there and made many dear and life-long friends.

She made close friends wherever she went – from Maine to Florida. The number of lives she touched immeasurable.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Gerald; son “Pete,” daughter Linda, daughter-in-law Amy; grandson Drew, and infant grandchild.

She is survived by her sisters Anita Farrell, Marge Cacioppo, and her husband Dino, brother in-law Joseph Veilleux, sister-in-law Bernadette Bizier; her children: Jean (Wayne), Doug (Michelle), David (Jody), John (Victoria), Michael (Danielle), Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Theresa Veilleux; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many, many, nieces and nephews.

WATERVILLE – Samantha Brown Marra, 80, passed away February 5, 2018, at Inland Hospital, in Waterville. She was born March 14, 1937, in Madison, the daughter of Norman R. and Hilda H (Hinton) Brown.

She was educated in the schools of Winslow and graduated from Winslow High School in 1955. Then she continued her education at Boston University graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree and in 1965 she graduated from New York University with a master’s degree. She was employed for many years as a real estate broker.

She was predeceased by her parents.

WINSLOW––Michael Poulin, 18, passed away due to a seizure, in Benton at his girlfriend’s home, on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.

He lived his teenage years with his father, Jason Poulin, in Belgrade and Winslow.

Michael was a senior at Messalonskee High School, in Oakland, where he was enrolled in an auto body shop class through Mid Maine Technical Center, in Waterville. He had a lot of support from the staff at Messalonskee, especially Scott Talcove and Angela McMahon.

Michael was an avid fisherman of spring, summer and ice fishing. His latest hobby was building and running several different size fish tanks with all sorts of different fish in them. He had a great love of wrestling, with his all-time favorite wrestle being John Cena. He also followed Roman Regins as a wrestler. He enjoyed the sport of car racing. He went camping with his father, Jason Poulin, to Loudon to watch NASCAR live every year. Michael enjoyed working on his father’s race car and was always in the pits at Unity Raceway to support his dad and The Robinson racing team. He was always doing a project of some sorts.

Michael touched many lives with his smile, big hugs and loving personality. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

He is survived by his parents, Jason Poulin and Dawn Lebourdais; their son, Anthony Poulin; a half-sister, Sivanna, on Maternal side; and a half-brother, JR, on maternal side. Michael is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Dorothy and Paul McDonald; paternal grandparents, Richard and Emily Poulin; paternal grandmother, Shirley Poulin; aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

A special Mass at Notre Dame church in Waterville will be on Friday, March 9, 2018, at 11 a.m., with a Celebration of Life immediately following in the church hall.

PATRICIA D. SWEET

WHITEFIELD––Patricia Diane Sweet, 74, of Whitefield, died at home on Saturday, February 24, 2018. She had been in declining health since October. She was born on December 1, 1943, in New London, Connecticut, a daughter of Don and Helen Jarvin.

She graduated from Waterford High School in 1961. Pat married her husband of 54 years, C. Thomas Sweet, on May 11, 1963. They lived in Connecticut, Florida and Mississippi before settling in Maine. Her most recent employment was at Bath Iron Works as a C.A.D. designer in the H.A.V.C. department until retiring in 1995. She and Tom were fortunate enough to have retired in their early 50s and enjoyed a trip out west for three months. They enjoyed spending their winters in Florida.

Pat became an avid golfer after retirement and made many friends at the Sheepscott Links Golf Club, where she was a member. She was the 2017 Women’s Club Champion. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading, and, of course, spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Pat is survived by her husband Tom; her son Curtis Sweet and wife Chinnessa, her son Cameron Sweet, daughter Laura Atwood and husband Mark; and ten grandchildren, Ashley Sweet, Britney Sweet, Acadia Sweet, Cayman Sweet, Asia Sweet, Charlotte Sweet, Amanda Sullivan, Gregory Holly, Matthew Atwood and Stephen Atwood.

EDWIN D. MULLEN

OAKLAND––Edwin Daniel Mullen, 74, died on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta, following a long illness. Edwin was born February 14, 1944, in Oakland, and attended Oakland schools.

Edwin served in the U.S. Army in Germany and was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion Post #51, of Oakland.

Edwin was predeceased by his son Aaron Lee Mullen; his parents Muriel Perkins and Herbert E. Mullen, Sr.; his brother Herbert E. Mullen, Jr. and his wife Sandra Shaw Mullen; several aunts and uncles.

Edwin is survived by his wife Angela M. (Hinck) Mullen of 53 years; two sons, Shawn E. Mullen and significant other, Karen Lock, Dale H. Mullen and wife Deborah (Beckwith); daughter Tammy M. Phillips and husband Daniel; sister Lisa E. Levine and fiancé Matt Wilcox; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

ZACHARY M. TULLEY

FAIRFIELD––Zachary M. Tulley, 28, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Zack was born in Waterville on October 16, 1989, the son of Heidi (Littlefield) White and Matthew Tulley.

He attended Lawrence High School. Zack had previously worked in the asbestos removal field, worked as a laborer at Nitram, and acquired his CDL license and drove commercially over the road.

Zack was a big fan of all sports. Football was his first love and he was a loyal Lawrence Bulldogs and New England Patriots fan. He grew up playing football for the Fairfield PAL league and continued through high school. He also enjoyed basketball and baseball. Zack loved children and enjoyed spending time with his boys, nieces and nephews. He enjoyed playing video games and competing with family and friends. In his younger years he was uncle Harrison’s shadow and helper. Zack loved to socialize and enjoyed telling a good story.

Zack was predeceased by his grandfather, Reginald Fortin.

JEAN A. POULIN

VASSALBORO––Jean A. (Young) Poulin, 69, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, February 26, 2018. She was born in Waterville on November 23, 1948, the daughter of Raymond and Joan (Quirion) Young.

A graduate of Mount Merici Academy, in Waterville, she was employed by Keyes Fibre (now Huhtamaki) for more than 30 years.

A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she always put her family first. She loved to travel, was very involved with youth hockey, and enjoyed gardening. An extremely strong woman, she had been fighting cancer and renal failure for many years.

She was predeceased by her mother; and a brother Raymond.

She is survived by her father Raymond Young; her husband Robert; her daughter Stephanie Lockhart and husband Justin; her son Chad Poulin and wife Jodi; and her son Brent Poulin; five grandchildren, Joshua and Tyler Wilde, Trent, Cole and Caitlin Poulin; and one great-grandchild Leo, three siblings Paula Fundaro, Bernard Young, and Carole Klaiber; and many nieces and nephews.

JANICE DORVAL

VASSALBORO––Janice Dorval, 82, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Lakewood Rehabilitation Center, in Waterville. Janice was born September 16, 1935, in Oakland, the daughter of Earl and Bessie (Knox) Bickford.

Janice married Armand Dorval on October 10, 1953, in Vassalboro. In 1967, Janice and Armand bought an egg farm in Vassalboro and began raising laying hens. Janice was a proud farmer, known for her ingenuity and “can-do” attitude, both of which she regularly employed to resolve issues on the farm.

On January 4, 1975, Janice lost her husband Armand when he was killed in a snowmobile accident. Janice continued to operate the business on her own for years following his death. Janice was an extremely capable and selfless person, addressing whatever needed to be done for her family with out complaint. Whether she was tending the farm, redecorating her home, chopping wood, plowing snow or tending the vegetable garden, she was focused on getting the job done.

Whether she was sewing new outfits for her children and grandchildren, or tirelessly crocheting doilies in later years, Janice was dedicated to bringing joy and happiness to her family. When her grandchildren went off to college, she began a new tradition, sending “Gram’s Care Packages” that were anxiously awaited by her grandchildren and their college friends. Her great-grandchildren looked forward to her special birthday cards and singing cards at Christmas.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Neil Bickford.

BARBARA A. TOUNGE

SOUTH CHINA – Barbara Ann Sutter Drouin Tounge, 69, died Saturday, March 3, 2018, at her home, following a brief struggle with liver and lung cancer. She was born on August 8, 1948, in Augusta, at Augusta General Hospital and moved to Windsor on July 4, 1969, where she raised her four children and now resided in South China.

She loved to do crafts, play bingo, playing cards, doing extreme couponing and being around family and friends.

She worked at Health-Tex, Inc., for many years and retired after 25 years at Augusta Mental Health Institute (AMHI) and continued the remaining nine years at Riverview Psychiatric Center, in Augusta.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #179 for 31 years and the Augusta Elks Lodge #964 for 18 years.

She was predeceased by her husband; Gregory C. Tounge and previous husband, Emile L. Drouin; her parents: Bertram J. Sutter, Sr. and Virgie Mae (Hysom) Sutter; her brothers: Bertram J. Sutter, Jr. and his wife Sherril Sutter and Richard A. Sutter, Sr.; and her sister, Gloria J. (Sutter) Nimon Grant.

She is survived by her four children: Tammy Cunningham and her husband Troy, of China, Timothy Drouin, Sr. and wife Dawn, of Windsor, Thomas Drouin, of South China, and Theresa Haskell and companion Ronald Brann, of Windsor; eight grandchildren: Meghan Sears, Felicia Durgin, Timothy Drouin, Jr., Barbarajean Drouin, Meagan Cunningham, Ashley Haskell, Katie Cunningham and Abby Haskell; 13 great-grandchildren: James Drouin, Aidan Durgin, Jackson Drouin, Keegan Sears, Aurora Durgin, Carter Durgin, Jayden Drouin, Peytynn and Paisley Sears, Thea Haskell, Chase Durgin, Emma Haskell and new arrival any day of Isabelle Emilia Durgin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Barbara has also left behind her beloved dog “Princess.”
