MERTON D. CAMPBELL

WINSLOW – Merton D. Campbell, 86, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at the Lakewood Continuing Care Center, in Waterville. Merton was born in Malagawatch, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, on June 9, 1931, son of Avice and Murdoch Campbell.

Merton graduated from Waterville High School in 1949.

Mert married his childhood sweetheart, Lois M. Armstrong, in May 1951. The couple moved to Dover, Delaware, where he was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his completion of service, they moved to Winslow, where Mert founded Campbell Taping Company, and was well-respected in the drywall contracting business. His two sons learned the trade from their father and continue to provide these skills and services to many Maine communities.

Mert was always ready to lend a hand to anyone needing his many skills. He was a craftsman, builder, carpenter, welder, and mechanic, often coming to the rescue of his children, neighbors, and friends. He was also a “one-of-a-kind” grandfather who volunteered to babysit his grandchildren as a blessing to their working parents.

Mert had a servant’s heart for many ministries at the Winslow Congregational Church, where he was a trustee for years, tending to the needs of the church building as requests arose. He could always be
found washing dishes in the kitchen during church suppers. He was also a great help in mixing up the batter for blueberry pancakes at the church’s annual Blueberry Festival. Mert and Lois also worked as volunteers for the Meals on Wheels Program.

Mert most enjoyed spending summers at the family camp on Messalonskee Lake, which he built in 1962. Mert and Lois welcomed both family and friends to spend time with them at their beloved “Camp Bell” in Campbell Cove. Mert enjoyed sailing on the lake on boats he designed and built. He was continually working, though, even at camp, raking the property, painting, and making repairs.

Mert’s wife Lois passed away in November of 2013.

Mert is survived by his three children, Debra Clark and husband Dan, of Winslow, James Campbell and his wife Peg, of Fairfield, and John Campbell and his wife Bridget, of Winslow; two sisters Joscelyn Moody, of Macedon, New York, and Peggy Crosby, of Benton; grandchildren Erin Pollock and husband Jonathan, of Durham, David Campbell and wife Heather, of South Portland, Ben Clark and wife Theresa, of Winslow, Beth Carlton, of Fairfield and Haley Campbell, of Winslow; great-grandchildren Emily and Hannah Carlton, Grace, Ella, Lydia, Samuel, Theodore, and Oliver Clark, Gabriel and Lily Pollock; cousin Larry Bailey and wife Linda, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

A memorial gathering will be held at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, in Fairfield, on Saturday, April 28, from 2-4 p.m.

LUCILLE A. GIROUX

WINSLOW – Lucille A. (Cote) Giroux, 93, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, at Glenridge Comfort Care, in Augusta. She was born in Waterville on May 29, 1924, daughter of Onesime Sr. and Stella (Proulx) Cote.

She attended local schools and graduated from Waterville High.

She married Donald L. Giroux, from Winslow, on June 12, 1948.

She stayed at home to raise her three children and then entered the work force in the assessor’s office at Waterville City Hall until retirement in 1989.

Her family was her pride and joy. Holidays and family celebrations were a big part of her life. There was always room for one more person. Two of her favorite hobbies were crocheting and word puzzles. She enjoyed watching old movies, especially musicals, and going out for a drive.

She was predeceased by her husband, Don; her parents; two sisters, Arlene and Jeanette; three brothers, Francis, Onesime Jr. (Zim), and Leo.

She is survived by her son Daniel, and daughters Ellen Grenier and husband James, Janet Delile and husband James; grandchildren, Amber Mitchell and husband Ken, of Corinth, Jennifer Young and partner Jake, of Waterville, Kelly McDonald and husband Joe, of Rhode Island, Matthew and wife Jenny, of Fairfield, Kristen Eppinger and husband Neil, of New Jersey, Aron and wife Jamie, of Michigan; great-grandchildren Erica and Emily Mitchell, Caitlyn Young, Kyle and Kendal McDonald, Charlee Grenier, Lily Eppinger and Delisa Roulo, Dylan and Mia Delile.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 26 Monument St., Winslow. Burial will follow in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

BERNICE R. SCHISSLER

OAKLAND – Bernice R. Schissler, 52, of Oakland, died on Friday, March 30, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born on July 25, 1965, in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of Monika (Catalano) and Frank Perpinan.

She was educated in Mastic Beach, New York, schools and came to Maine to attend Kennebec Valley Community College, in Fairfield, where she obtained an associate’s degree in accounting.

Through the years she developed a talent for crafts and became adept in primitive art. She was known as a good baker, especially cheesecakes. She had the ability to see humor in most things and readily laughed when appropriate. Bernice had a spirit of kindness that showed itself in a certain spirit of innocence, honesty and dedication. Her greatest joy was found in her family and she took tremendous pride in loving everyone; be it as a big sister, daughter, mother and grandmother.

Bernice is survived by her daughter Andrea Donadio and her fiancé Ron Cloutier and their daughter Bailey Cloutier, of Waterville; son Anthony Schissler, USMC, of South Carolina; mother Monika Catalano and husband Al; sister Jacqueline Cabrera and husband Carlos, brother Ken Hamada and wife Lisa, sister Jennifer Pahlitzsch and husband Kurt, sister Lisa Perpinan, all of Long Island, New York; as well as a large extended family.

MARK A. HUARD

UNITY – Mark Ames Huard, 49, of Unity, passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday, April 1, 2018. Mark was born to Leon and Bette Huard on November 21, 1968, at Redington-Fairview Hospital, in Skowhegan.

Coincidentally, just a few rooms away in the same hospital, the girl who would eventually become his childhood friend, high school locker partner, and dedicated life partner, had been born six days earlier.

Mark grew up in the town of Norridgewock and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army from 1987-1993 and earned a B.S. in Wildlife Management from Unity College in 2004. Mark worked for the state of Maine, Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, in various positions from 2001-present, with a brief stint at the U.S. Geological Survey.

Mark was a private person, a man of few words who let his actions do the talking. All who knew and loved him would agree that he was a doer in the fullest sense of the word. He could design, build, repair, and invent almost anything. He was known as “MarkGyver” because there was nothing he couldn’t do, from carpentry, mechanics, beekeeping, electronics, construction, plumbing, etc. He was a voracious reader of how-to- books and owner’s manuals, and constantly watched videos to learn as well.

Mark loved projects, and though he may not have immediately appreciated the projects Kim suggested, he always indulged her requests for such things as raised garden beds and a chicken coop. He was in the process of designing a greenhouse for her this spring. Mark and Kim enjoyed working on projects around their home in Unity and taking back road drives in the “Big Red Truck” with their beloved dog, Ginger. They loved spending as much time together in nature as possible, especially being on the water.

Mark is survived by his partner of 27 years, Kimble Ann Hardy; his father Leon Huard and wife Glenda, of Unity; his sister Heidi Jordan and husband Tim, and niece Emily Jordan; Kimble’s family, mother, Bette Anterra (Bette #2), of Colorado Springs, Colorado, father, Malcolm Hardy and partner Marti Gross, of Mt. Vernon; sister, Karin Hardy, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and niece, Kasey Kelley, of Portland; brother Andrew Hardy and wife Teyara and their children Kaenon, Hathaway, and Minka; her brother Aaron Stasulis and his children Isabella and Logan; as well as several uncles, aunts, and cousins.

RICHARD S. DROHAN

WINDSOR – Richard S. Drohan, 66, of Windsor Neck Road, and formerly of Florida, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Alfond Center for Health, in Augusta, following an extended illness. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on April 12, 1951, the son of Harold Drohan and Edna (Scott) Drohan.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Drohan was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for many years. He was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, in Florida.

Mr. Drohan was predeceased by his parents; two brothers and one sister.

Surviving is his son, Matthew R. Drohan and his wife, Emily, of Halifax, Massachusetts; sister, Jacqueline Fox, of Windsor; and several nieces and nephews.

WINSLOW––Patricia “Pat” Reny, 91, passed away at home on Thursday, March 15, 2018.

She was the wife of the late Raymond J. Reny who passed away on December 7, 2017. Together they raised six children, all of whom they were very proud.

Patricia started her working career at C. F. Hathaway Shirt Factory, in Waterville, as a stitcher for many years, then worked at the chicken hatchery and sold many veggies at “Pat’s Wayside Garden”.

Patricia celebrated her family in the way only mothers know how, through their love of food and gathering. She shared her spirit of cooking with everyone she loved, and although few have mastered her recipes, they will be remembered by many. And what fun would a family gathering be, without a deck of cards (seven and up only!), and pairing-up for a game of Charlie.

Pat was spritely at the table and could outwit us all. Even in her last days she continued to enjoy crossword puzzles with her family by her side; the Morning Sentinel jumble rarely left undone. The joy, caring and patience she shared with her family will be missed.

Patricia is survived by her son Edward Reny and wife Beth; five daughters: Elizabeth Heavener and husband William, Paula Young and husband Terry, Carolyn LeClair and husband Jerome, Rebecca Theriault and husband Gregory, Lisa LaChance and husband Frank; and many grandchildren: Lance, Jeanine, Lonnie, Deanna, Deidre, Jennifer, Jason, Julie, Hanna, Timothy, Renee, Matthew, Chris and Cody; along with 22 great-grandchildren. Patricia was one of seven children of Patrick and Ludivine LaChance.

She is survived by her brother Arthur LaChance and wife Gerry, sisters Dorothy Reny and Jacqueline Plourde and husband Arthur.
She was predeceased by her brothers Edmond and Larry LaChance and Cleo Fortin. A special thanks to sister-in-law Muriel Grenier, the only surviving sibling of her husband Raymond Reny.

GERALDINE B. OUELLETTE

WATERVILLE––Geraldine B. Ouellette passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Woodlands Assisted Living, in Waterville. Gerry was born in Skowhegan, November 16, 1930, the daughter of John and Imelda Miller.

Educated in Skowhegan schools, Geraldine worked at Norwalk Shoe Co., in Skowhegan, until she married her husband, Fredrick Ouellette. They moved to Madison and lived there until his death in 1997. Gerry moved back to Skowhegan and lived there until she moved to Woodlands Assisted Living, in Waterville.

Gerry was the oldest of five sisters who were commonly referred to as the “Golden Girls” for the close love and relationship they shared. With no surviving Children of her own, Gerry loved and doted on her many nieces and nephews. Her favorite days were spending time with family, enjoying sing-alongs, cookouts and many rides around Maine. Gerry was a devout Catholic enjoying 50 years as a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Gerry was predeceased by her husband Fred; her child Jeffrey; her brother Jack Miller, and sisters Mary Wilcox and Patricia Schinzel.

She is survived by her sisters Eleanor Bouchard, of Skowhegan, and Kathleen Potelle, of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews.

ARDATH E. WOOD

VASSALBORO––Ardath E. (Farnham) Wood, 75, died Sunday, March 18, 2018, at her home, following a long illness. She was born in Boothbay Harbor, on November 8, 1942, the daughter of the late Isaac A. and Eleanor J. (Chase) Farnham.

Mrs. Wood was a 1961 high school graduate of Boothbay Region High School. In March 2000, she retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs at Togus with over 29 years of service. Some of her favorite hobbies included gardening, knitting, reading, baking and traveling.

She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel W. Wood; a step-son, Karl E. Larrabee; and a step-daughter, Barbara Mitchell.

Mrs. Wood is survived by two sons, Mark L. Larrabee, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Timothy K. Larrabee, of Vassalboro; two daughters, Denise E. Jones, of Vassalboro, and Mista E. Tessio, of Hope; her brother, William A. Farnham, of Somerville; a step-son, James Larrabee, of South China; a step-daughter, Carol McIntyre, of Medway; five grandchildren: Krystle, Benjamin, Alisha, Kayla and Elisabeth; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Hannah; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

ALBION––Phyllis Arlene “Young” Lee passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Inland Hospital, following a brief illness.Phyllis was born on October 6, 1921, and lived a very long life of 96 years.

She lost her son Charlton at the age of 18 which left a huge hole in her heart.

Phyllis loved working with her hands, crocheting beautiful quilts, needle point, quilting very colorful pot holders, and stained glass was another of her many projects and talents. She loved the outdoors, gardening, perch fishing, fiddle heading and most of all berry picking. She was a great cook; many blueberry muffins and pies were made to be shared with her family and friends at Meadow by the Brook.

Phyllis was a member of the Washburn Brann Ward Post.

She was predeceased by her parents Enoch and Eunise Young; her first husband Leon Brann; son Carleton Brann; her second husband Ellis Lee; her brothers Maurice, Basil, Donald, Stanley, Warren and Waldo; and sisters Alberta and Imogne.

WINSLOW––Anette E. Lovejoy, 70, of Winslow, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 19, 2018, at Inland Hospital, Waterville. She was born in Waterville on July 7, 1947, the daughter of Basil and Maxine (Palmer) Rines.

Anette was a cake decorator and retired from the bakery of Sam’s Club, in Augusta. She enjoyed going out with her daughter Joyce for paint night, spending time with her daughter Becky at the pool, and being with her daughter Janet who lived with her and spent every day in their garage dayroom. She also enjoyed her time with her grandson, Devin, who would spend time cooking dinner for her and her grandson Justin, who was there to fix any of her mechanical needs from car to lawn mower.

WINSLOW––Franklin Ouellette, 84, formerly of Ginger Avenue, Winslow, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018, at his son’s home in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Franklin was born in Millinocket, on August 5, 1933, the son of Gertrude Cyr and William Ouellette.

Franklin was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Timothy Spaulding; his daughter-in-law, Barbara McDowell; and his son-in-law, John Garland.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Ouellette; his children, Dan and Donna Ouellette, Leanne Garland, Anna and Paul Higgins, David and Paula Ouellette, and Matthew Ouellette; his grandchildren, George and Elizabeth Ouellette, Bodhi and Tobey Simpson, Timothy and Tiffany Spaulding, Fred and Amy Ouellette, David Ouellette, Billy Stubbert, Victoria Stubbert, Dan and Beth Ouellette, Franklin and Amanda Ouellette, Danielle Ouellette, Matthew Higgins, Aaron Higgins, and Renee Reich; his brother, Leland “Bill” Willette; and sister, Theresa Roman. RICHARD C. SALMONSON

VASSALBORO––Richard Charles Salmonson, 73, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018, at his home in Vassalboro. He was born June 12, 1944, in Olean, New York, the son of Carl Arnold and Rita Lucille (Gerringer) Salmonson.

He graduated from Allegany-Limestone High School in 1962. On June 15, 1978, he married the former Patricia Foshay, in Fairfield. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years until his honorable discharge. He was employed by the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and the Allegany Public Schools, and volunteered at the Waterville Fire Department.

Richard was a member of the Center Vassalboro Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking, and spending time with family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Rita Salmonson; sister, Elsie Schultz; granddaughter, Britney LaBrie.

Richard is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia (Foshay) Salmonson, of Vassalboro; three daughters, Karen Gordon, of Virginia, Christina McGahey and husband Randy, of Lyman, Dianna Lee Garnett, of Woolwich; three step-daughters, Ruth Blaschke and husband Rick, of Clinton, Lisa Colfer and husband Todd, of Chelsea, Kim Wood and husband Kevin, of Oakland; two step-sons, Phillip Nadeau, of Waterville, William Rancourt, of Winslow; brother, Robert Salmonson and wife Barb, of Allegany, New York; mother-in-law, Anita Cole and husband Richard, of Oakland; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

BARBARA A. TOUNGE

SOUTH CHINA––Barbara Ann Sutter Drouin Tounge, 69, died Saturday, March 3, 2018, at her home following a brief struggle with liver and lung cancer. She was born on August 8, 1948, in Augusta, at Augusta General and moved to Windsor on July 4, 1969, where she raised her four children, and then resided in South China.

She loved to do crafts, play bingo, going out to eat with her friends, playing cards, doing extreme couponing and being around family and friends. She cherished her four children, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She worked at Health-Tex, Inc. for many years and retired after 25 at AMHI and continued the remaining nine years at Riverview Psychiatric Center.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #179 for 31 years and the Augusta Elks Lodge #964 for 18 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gregory C. Tounge and previous husband, Emile I. Drouin; her parents, Bertram J. Sutter, Sr. and Virgie Mae (Hyson) Sutter; her brothers, Bertram J. Sutter, Jr. and his wife Sherril Sutter and Richard A. Sutter, Sr.; and her sister, Gloria J. (Sutter) Nimon Grant.

She is survived by her four children, Tammy Cunningham and her husband Troy, of China, Timothy Drouin, Sr. and wife Dawn, of Windsor, Thomas Drouin, of South China, and Theresa Haskell and companion Ronald Brann, of Windsor; grandchildren, Meghan Sears, Felicia Durgin, Timothy Drouin, Jr., Barbarajean Drouin, Meagan Cunningham, Ashley Haskell, Katie Cunningham and Abby Haskell; great-grandchildren, James Drouin, Aidan Durgin, Jackson Drouin, Keegan Sears, Aurora Durgin, Carter Durgin, Jayden Drouin, Peytynn and Paisley Sears, Thea Haskell, Chase During, Emma Haskell.

AGNES A. DIFFIN

VASSALBORO––Agnes Arlene (Gray) Diffin, 94, of Waterville, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Lakewood Continuing Care Center, in Waterville. She was born in Wesley on April 3, 1923, the daughter of Roger A. Gray and Minerva (Sharman) Gray.

Agnes graduated from Washington Academy, in Machias, and Washington State Normal School, in Machias. She graduated froom the University of Maine, Orono, in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in education. A thesis which she wrote at University of Maine was on the social history of Machias.

Agnes taught school in Marshfield, Greenville, Lincoln; Fairborn, Ohio; New Britain, Connecticut; Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada; Clark Air Force Base, Philippine Islands; Wiesbaden, Germany; Sculthorpe. England; Newfoundland, Canada; New Canaan, Connecticut; and Limestone. Many of these teaching positions were at Uniated States Air Force bases.

During her career teaching at the various Air Force bases, Agnes took the opportunity to tour dozens of countries around the world. She documented her travels, as well as many family gatherings, with thousands of photographs, slides, and home movies, which she enjoyed sharing with her parents and extended family of brothers, sister, cousins, nieces and nephews.

On June 24, 1967, Agnes married Darrell F. Diffin, a widower with one son who was also her second cousin once-removed. She and Darrell lived at the top of Sharman (also called Bearman) Hill, in Robbinston, with a beautiful view of Passamaquoddy Bay. Agnes continued to teach in Limestone until she retired. After retirement she enjoyed doing sewing and needlework projects, making apple pies for Darrell, and a few years later, helping care for her aging mother during the summers in Robbinston.

After her husband died in 1997, Agnes moved to East Vassalboro to be closer to family, and continued to help care for her mother. While living in East Vassalboro, she attended the Vassalboro Methodist Church and had many friends in the area. In her later years, due to health concerns, she moved into assisted living facilities in Waterville, the last one being Lakewood.

Agnes was predeceased by her husband Darrell; her step-son Gary L. Diffin; her brothers Allen S. Gray and L. Austin Gray, her sister and brother-in-law Maxine (Gray) Robbins and Gerald Robbins; and three nephews.

She is survived by one brother, James Gray, of North Vassalboro; one sister-in-law, Prudence (Bartley) Gray, of East Vassalboro; step-granddaughter, Jennifer Diffin and husband Keith Martin, of Washington, D.C.; several nieces; nephews; great- nieces and great-nephews; and great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews.

MILTON W. BREAULT

EAST VASSALBORO––Milton W. Breault, 86, of East Vassalboro, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, following a brief stay at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home, in Waterville. He was born in Waterville on December 21, 1931, where he attended school, graduating from Waterville High School in 1950.

Like his twin brother, he worked at C.F. Hathaway Shirt Co., in Waterville, before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1951, He was stationed in Merced, California, and in France until 1954, returning to C. F. Hathaway to work until his retirement in 1994, a total of 43 1/2 years.

On May 5, 1951, he married the former Barbara Rogers, and they started their successful marriage of 66 years. They started their family of five children in Waterville, then moving to East Vassalboro where they lived until the present time.

Milton was always depended upon by everyone because he was a “get it done” guy. He was always involved in the family and friends functions and events.

As a boy he worked setting up pins at the Metro Bowl, in Waterville, resulting in a lifelong passion for bowling. He also acquired early in life a love for horses, working for years at Meader’s Stables, in Waterville. Milton also enjoyed playing pool at Elks, playing long into his retirement.

He and his wife were very active in their church, St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, in North Vassalboro, and in their community of East Vassalboro through organizations like the East Vassalboro Grange and the local snowmobile club. Milton was a lifetime member of the American Legion Bourque-Lanigan Post #5, of Waterville, and Winslow MacCrillis-Rousseau VFW Post #8835 and a member of Waterville Elks Lodge #905 for 26 years.

He was predeceased by his father Arthur; his mother Rose; his sister Germaine Horvath; and his brothers Ralph and Alton.

Milton is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara; his five children, Deborah Rogers and husband Ben, of Winslow, Susan Watts, of Waterville, Christopher Breault and wife Lucille, of East Vassalboro, Andrew Breault and wife Peggy, of South China, and Douglas Breault, of North Vassalboro; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

WINDSOR––Mary Ellen Peaslee, 84, of Legion Park Road, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, in Florida, following a brief illness. She was born in Calais on October 24, 1933. the daughter of Herbert Leroy Hold and Minnie L. (MacDowell) Hold.

Mrs. Peaslee was a 1950 graduate of Erskine Academy, where she received high honors.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed in many and various jobs including: Excel Cleaners, of Gardiner and Augusta, payroll clerk at E. E. Taylor Shoe Co., Macomber, Farr and Whitten Insurance Co., Charles E. Dowing Insurance Co., State of Maine Department of Business Regulation, and she was a self-employed driver education and motorcycle instructor for 20 years.

Mrs. Peaslee was a member of the North Windsor Baptist Church and Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta.

She was very involved in activities in Windsor, a member of the Maine State Grange, and traveled far and wide.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday May 20, 2018, at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water St., Augusta. A reception will follow. Burial will be in Dyer Hill Cemetery, Windsor, at a later date.

FRED VAN ORMAN

WINSLOW – Fred Van Orman, 82, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018, at his home in Winslow, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 17, 1936, in Hornell, New York, the son of William Neal and Margaret (Smith) Van Orman.

He was educated in the schools of New York and graduated from Almond High School. He was a veteran who proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Navy until his retirement. After serving his country, he was employed by Bath Iron Works for 12-1/2 years, then as a care taker of the Lincoln Ladd estate, in Wayne, for 12 years. He was involved in many civic and community activities including teaching hunter safety courses in West Gardiner for 32 years, with the Special Olympics for the Madison Bull Frogs, was a member of the Litchfield Masonic Lodge, member of the MacCrillis-Rousseau VFW Post #8835, in Winslow, and of the West Gardiner Rod and Gun Club, and a member of the Manchester Community Church.

Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and camping with son, Fred II, family and friends at his cabin on Flagstaff Lake, and of course, football.

Fred will be remembered for his saying of “yumpin’ yimminy,” his Doctor Doolittle approach with animals, and love for Tippy, the family dog.

He is survived by his spouse of 57 years, Patricia M. (O’Brien) Van Orman, of Winslow; children, Donna Sears and husband Wallace, of Abbyville, South Carolina, Patrick Van Orman, of Sacremento, California, D. Fred Van Orman II and partner Gary Nadeau, of Winslow, Calvin Van Orman, deceased, William Van Orman and Dr. Billiones, of Germantown, Maryland; grandchildren, Van Sears, of Great Mills, Maryland, Raberta Sears, of Augusta, Georgia, Patrick Kelly, Jennah and Patricia Van Orman, of Sacremento, California; great-grandchildren, Phineas W. PHILIP M. WENTZEL

VASSALBORO––Philip Martin Wentzel, 89, of Vassalboro, formerly of China and Augusta, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor. He was born on February 22, 1928, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the second child of Ethel Louise (Lake) Wentzel and Roy Alva Wentzel.

The family returned to the U. S. in 1930 and moved to Augusta in 1931.

Philip attended Augusta’s Nash and Lincoln schools and graduated from Cony High School as “Third Honor Part in the class of 1946. He served honorably in the Army of the United Stated from 1946 to 1948, with a tour of duty in Allied-occupied Japan as a photographer and surveyor. He then attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning a B.S. in civil engineering in the class of 1952.

On September 13, 1952, Philip married the former Mary Ellen French, the youngest of six children of Thomas Cowan and Eunice Myrtle French, who owned and operated French’s Market Gardens, of South China. Philip and Mary were married for over 65 years until his death.

Philip was employed for 44 years in the Bridge Construction and Bridge Design Division of the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT), formerly the Maine State Highway Commission, as a registered professional engineer, and worked on many bridge projects across the state.

Throughout his long live, Philip cultivated numerous interests, including, but by no means limited to, photography, home gardening, cartography, sharing the history of Maine narrow-gauge railroads with his children, maintaining ties with his relatives in the Wentzel and Kaulback families of Maine and Nova Scotia.

Also, baseball and basketball, swimming, skiing, hiking, mountain climbing and attending the annual MOFGA Common Ground County Fair since its inception in 1977.

A man of strong Christian faith and high principles, Philip honored his responsibilities to his family, his work, his friends, and his country. He will be remembered by many for his easy laugh and sense of humor.

Philip was predeceased by both of his parents; as well as a sister, Eleanor Mae Clark of Belgrade, and brothers-in-law Richard Houston and Morgan Harris.

Survivors include his wife Mary; their three sons, Robert F. Wentzel and wife Valerie Hunter, of Portland, Oregon, Thomas M. Wentzel and wife Cynthia Meler, of Tucson, Arizona, and John P. Wentzel, of Vassalboro; former daughter-in-law Nancy (Favor) (Wentzel) Phinney, of Santa Barbara, California; three grandsons, Robert and Nancy’s Lt. Col. (USAF) Jonathan F. and wife Claire Wentzel, Major (USAF) James B. and wife Kimberly Wentzel, and Robert and Valerie’s Joshua H. Wentzel; and four great-grandchildren; his sister, Lola Jeanne (Houston) Harris, of Berkeley, California; brother-in-law, Arthur Clark, of Belgrade; and by six nieces and nephews and their families.

FAIRFIELD––Arthur “Biz” Carpenter passed away at Southern Maine Medical Center, in Biddeford, on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. Biz was born in Waterville on July 25, 1931, the son of Arthur Carpenter and Violet.

He graduated from Waterville High School in 1948. After high school he enlisted in the Army. He served for four years. Shortly after that Biz met Marie “Maggie” Adams.

Besides family, Biz had a couple of hobbies that brought immense joy to him. One of those hobbies was going to the Waterville Elks Club. He was a lifetime member. He spent many hours there and was a very “active member.” Biz enjoyed helping with the BBQ chicken dinners, did quite a bit of painting, and assisted with countless other activities. He made too many friends to mention here.

The other joy for this gentle, loving man was fishing. Oh my, how Biz counted the days leading up to the annual trek to East Gran Lake, in Danforth. He, along with a dozen or so family and friends, has trolled those waters since 1976. The enthusiasm Biz had for these fishing trips was exhilarating, and never wavered through the 40-plus years. The core of this enthusiasm came because he was going to be with those nearest and dearest to him. It didn’t matter that the fish would-often-be uncooperative. What mattered was making memories that could, and would, be shared time and time again. Imagine a “once-in-a-lifetime” moment happening on an annual basis!

Besides being predeceased by Marie and his parents; Biz was also predeceased by brothers Raymond, Don, and Neil; grandchild, Jeremy; and great-grandchild, Job.

Surviving family members are his two daughters Chrissy Jurdak, Robin Whiten and partner, Peter; a son Brian Carpenter and wife Karen; brothers Freddie and Danny; sister Marlene, as well as sister Diana and husband Ron; grandchildren Jessica and husband Eric, Jennifer, Heather and husband Shawn, Renee, Corey, Michael, and Marissa; great-grandchildren, Al, Halley, Elijah, Zeb, Dejah, Ethan, Evan, JD, , Aviana, Kianna and Peyton; step-grandchildren Miranda, Erica, and Eli; and numerous nephews and nieces.

WILLIAM E. HAPWORTH SR.

FAIRFIELD––William E. Hapworth Sr., known to many as “Hap” “Ernie” “Happy” and “Ernest,” 84, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Maine General Medical Center, in Augusta. He was born in Waterville on October 8, 1933, the son of the late Howard C. and Fanny L. (Hustus) Hapworth.

Following his schooling, Ernest served with the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a very hard working man who really enjoyed working and providing for his family. He was working fulltime for Flood Brothers Dairy Farm just two months before his death. In his younger years, he was a self-employed dairy farmer, operating Happy Acres Dairy. He also owned and operated a trucking company, Happy Acres Dairy & Sons Trucking. His employment also included working for W. S. Pillsbury and Hammond Tractor.

Hap was also very dedicated to several organizations including the Masons, Shriners, and, in his younger years, was a member of the Fairfield Center Volunteer
fire Department. One of his greatest passions was flying his own planes. He owned and flew many over the years. He would often fly to remote destinations up north to go ice fishing.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Powers; and his daughter-in-law, Delia Hapworth.

Hap will be missed by his wife Jackie (Ronco) Hapworth; his children Patti White and husband Tom, of Fairfield, Cindy ‘White, of Winslow, William E. Hapworth Jr., of Fairfield, and Howard C. ALBERIC PELLETIER

NORTH VASSALBORO – Alberic Pelletier, 85, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta, of natural causes following a relatively short illness. Alberic was born on January 22, 1933, in Eagle Lake, son of Albenie and Rose Pelletier (Poissonnier).

As a child he moved to sidney with his family where he attended school. In 1951 he joined the U. S. Marine Corp and served a tour in the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the Marines, he returned to central Maine where he married the former Caribel Porter on July 31, 1954. The young couple moved to Winslow.

Over the years Alberic owned and ran Al’s Sunoco gas stations and garages on Bay Street, in Winslow, Main Street, in Fairfield, and College Ave, in Waterville. His wreckers had “Here Come Al” signage ons the front that could only be read in a mirror. Alberic was an avid fisherman and a hunter, as he had an incredible shot. He went hunting in many states and various provinces in Canada. Al was a dedicated gardener and was an accomplished builder, as he built several homes in the central Maine area.

At his retirement, Al and Caribel moved to Casa Grand, Arizona, where they resided and made many friends until their return to Maine in 2008.

Alberic was predeceased by his parents Albenie and Rose Pelletier; his brothers Alvie, Alfred, Richard; sisters Estelle and Shirley Glazier; mother-in-law Gladys Porter and father-in-law Oliver Porter.

He is survived by his wife Caribel of 63 years; daughter Judith Rogde and significant other Richard, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and her son Jarrett and daughter Allison; son Peter and daughter-in-law Sally, on Intervale, New Hampshire, and his sons Brian, Lance and Scott; his son Randall and daughter-in-law Erlile, of Vassalboro, and his daughters Jasmine and Jayde; his daughter Jennifer Pelletier and significant other Scott, of Winslow, and her daughter Tasha; seven great-grandchildren.

WINSLOW – Dorothy J. Joseph, 84, of Winslow, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, following a short illness. She was born in Waterville on March 26, 1933, a daughter of John and Marie (Sirois) Bernard.

Dot was co-owner of Joseph’s Flooring Company, in Winslow, for 35 years operating it along side her husband, Maurice. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow.

Dot loved her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her husband, Maurice.

GERARD H. ROUTHIER

FAIRFIELD – Gerard H. Routhier, 78, passed away at Maine­General Medical Center, in Augusta, on Friday, February 2, 2018. He was born on January 16, 1940, in Coburn Gore, the son of Aurore (Poulin) and Lucien Routhier.

He attended and graduated from Waterville Public School in 1958. Jerry served with the United States Marine Corps for four years and received an honorable discharge.

He married the former Florida Grard, on June 8, 1963.

Jerry was employed by Hannaford Bros. for over 50 years until his retirement. He was best know as pepere by his co-workers. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with family.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Gabrielle.

MARJORIE A. HACHEY

FAIRFIELD – Marjorie “Marge” A. (Oliver) Hachey, 83, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018, at her home, in Fairfield, following a long courageous battle. She was born Sep­tem­ber 23, 1934, in Waterville, the daughter of the late Freeman and Mona (Foster) Oliver.

She attended Waterville High School, graduating in 1952, after which she attended Boston Dispensary in 1954. Later, she married Harvey Hachey, of Winslow, who predeceased her in 1988. Marge worked for 27 years as a phlebotomist at the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital, which later became Inland Hospital.

In 1998, she met her life partner, James “Red” Giroux, and they shared years together going to Florida and car races.

She is survived by her partner, Red, of Fairfield; daughter, Donna Beaulieu and husband Steve, of Clinton; granddaughter, Binica and partner Todd Carter; five great-grandchildren, Cooper Beaulieu, Makayla Robinson, Mason, Colton and Piper Carter; a sister-in-law, Cora Dixon and husband Alton; niece Lisa Workman and her husband Dale; a nephew Scott Oliver and his partner Laura and nephew Kerry Oliver.

She was predeceased by her brother Gerry Oliver and his wife Barbara.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 1 p.m., at the VFW in Fairfield.

Locally, she is survived by her father, Stanley E. Chase and his wife Elaine, of Vassalboro; brother David E. Chase and wife Deborah, of Windsor; and nephews Daniel E. Chase and Daryl S. Chase, both of Windsor.

SARAH J. KALER, 78, of Bremen, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the Sussman House, in Rockport, following a lengthy illness. Locally, she is survived by a sister, Maxine Watson and family, of Whitefield.

KAY R. MEYERS, 82, of Bristol, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Maine Medical Center, in Portland, following a brief illness. Locally, she is survived by a son, Eric Meyer and wife Pat McKenzie, and granddaughter Dayze Gaulin, all of Whitefield.

PEARL D. VEILLEUX, 85, of Haines City, Florida, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Locally, she is survived by sisters Della Boulette and husband Clement, and Shirley Rossignol and husband Ronald, all of Waterville.

DEBORAH L. TIBBETTS, 62, of Monmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Central Maine Medical Center, in Lewiston. Locally, she is survived by children Joyce York and husband Jeff, and Charles Tibbetts III and wife April, all of Vassalboro, and Shawn Tibbetts and wife Bonnie, of Windsor.

J. RAYMOND FORTIN, 90, of Madison, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018, at Maplecrest Living Center, in Madison. Locally, he is survived by a grandson Jonathan Fortin and wife Cassie, and great-grandson Jack Fortin, all of Winslow.

MARGARET PRIOR, 90, of Portland, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017, at Sedgewood Commons, in Falmouth. She was the wife of the late Carl Prior, who became dean at Unity College, in Unity, in 1968. She joined the Unity Union Church and sang in the choir, taught physical education at Mount View High School, in Thorndike, and coached field hockey and gymnastics. She was also involved with town meetings, worked for the food pantry, was active in church, Rotary International, played bridge and continued to swim and ski.

ALLAN N. HART, 69, of Canaan, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor. At one time, Allan worked for both the Fairfield Police Department and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, eventually retiring as a personal body guard for an international client.

JEAN L. HAMEL, 85, of Waterville, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018, at Inland Hospital, in Waterville. She was a former manager of the Waterville Bowling Lanes, on Airport Road, in Waterville, former Wat­erville women’s candlepin bowling champion, and a member of the Maine State Candlepin Hall of Fame. Locally, she is survived by sons Michael Hamel and wife Deborah, William Hamel and wife Susan, and daughter Karen Paradis and husband Peter, all of Waterville.
