EDDIE L. JOHNSON

VASSALBORO––Eddie L. Johnson, 67, of Hunt Road, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Alfond Center for Health, in Augusta. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 20, 1949, the son of Benjamin J. Johnson and Luzeffie (Sims) Johnson.

Eddie served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Bath Iron Works for several years.

Eddie was predeceased by his mother, father; and a sister, Senora Edwards.

Surviving is his wife, Tammy L. (Hall) Johnson, of Vassalboro; two daughters, Yolanda Johnson and Fonda Johnson, of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, George Lee Johnson, of Hartford, Connecticut; grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

KEITH A. WILBUR

FAIRFIELD­­––Keith Allen Wilbur, 70, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017, in Oakland. He was born January 22, 1947, in Winslow, the son of Alton and Yvonne D. (Pomerleau) Wilbur.

He attended schools in Waterville and earned his GED in 1972. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the National Guard until his honorable discharge. He worked for a number of years for Lipman Poultry, in Augusta, C. F. Hathaway Shirt Company, in Waterville, the Maine Central Railroad, in Waterville, and most recently as a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the United Bikers of Maine and enjoyed triking, playing pool, woodcrafts, dancing and camping.

Keith is survived by four sisters, Virginia Veilleux and husband Gerry, of Oakland, Dianne Lane, of Sidney, Linda Rodrigue, and Donna Cayouette and husband Raymond, all of Winslow, two brothers, Everette Wilbur, of Waterville, and Russell Wilbur, of Portland.

HON. GLENYS P. LOVETT

SOUTH CHINA––The Honorable Glenys Pooler Lovett, 81, of South China and Sarasota, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at her home. She was born in Augusta on July 19, 1935, the only daughter of Donald and Ida (Melrose) Pooler.

She grew up and received her formal education in Augusta, graduating from Cony High School in 1953 where she was an outstanding majorette for many years, even giving lessons.

Shortly after completing her education, she married Lieutenant Walter B. Lovett Jr. of the United States Army on March 12, 1955,
and accompanied him to Germany, where they spent 18 months in Heidelberg. Her oldest daughter, Karen, was in 1956 while they were there.

Politics was her calling. From working on US Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s campaigns in the 60s to becoming a Maine State Legislator herself in the 90s.

A member of the Augusta School Board from 1964 to 1968, Glenys was a member of the Mayor’s School Survey Committee and School Construction Committee. She was also involved in the Maine Mother of the Year project, where she traveled to New York City with the Maine winner to join the other state winners at the Waldorf Astoria for a big celebration.

As a member of the Maine Highway Safety Commission for two decades (1972-1992), she became an early advocate for child seat safety restraints. During the same period, she represented the state of Maine on the National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders (NAWHSL).

Elected to the Maine State Legislature in 1994 from Scarborough (District 21), she served four consecutive terms as a member of the Health and Human Services Committee.

The Stop the Turnpike movement was just one of her many encounters with the Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) because of the effect it would have on the town of Scarborough.

Besides keeping a weather eye on the MTA, she also was working tirelessly to ban MTBE, an additive to gasoline, which was claimed to be contaminating the drinking water supply of many Maine homes.

During the 90s, she was an active member of the West Scarborough United Methodist Church, serving on a variety of committees. It was during this period that she also helped to raise two of her grandchildren, Michelle and Stephen, alongside their mother, Brenda.

In 2001, Glenys received an award from the Maine Long Term Care Ombudsman Program for her outstand service and dedication to the principles for which the organization promotes and is the health and welfare of Maine Senior Citizens.

She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her camp on China Lake and her winter home in Sarasota, Florida.

She was predeceased by her father, mother, and brother Arnold, three grandchildren, Nicholas Grant, of Hallowell, Brian and Stephanie Franklin, of Scarborough.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter; her three children, Karen Briggs, of South Portland, Joni-Lyn Lovett, of Farmingdale, and Brenda Franklin and husband Alan, of Scarborough; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

STEVE M. LEWIS

ALBION––Steve M. Lewis passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Togus VA Hospital, following a long illness. Steve was born on December 22, 1955, in Waterville, the son of Joseph and Helen (Colford) Lewis.

He married his soulmate and best friend, Julie Tobey on July 22, 1978, in Albion.

Steve graduated in 1975, from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield and joined the Army a year later.

He was a “Jack of All Trades” with an associate’s degree in computer science and social services. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time with family. He was also a skiing coach for the Special Olympics.

He was predecease by his parents Joe and Helen Lewis, his aunt, Rita Coates, and his paternal grandparents.

He is survived by his wife Julie (Tobey), of Albion; son Joshua and girlfriend Annalise, of California; two daughters Crystal Stanley and husband Adam and Tiffany Russell and boyfriend Brian, of Waterville; two granddaughters Donna Jo Adams and husband David, and Malynah Stanley, two grandsons Quinn Stanley and Joshua Russell; a great-granddaughter Izabelah Adams; a sister Patty Mounce and husband Rick, from Freedom, and his “Lil Sis” Shelly Willey and husband Gerald, from Palmyra; his uncle, Robert Colford and fiancee Rhea, Cliff Colford, of Fairfield; aunt, M. Layne Peet, from Oakland; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

LORRAINE BOUCHER

WINSLOW––Lorraine Hope Boucher, 87, of Winslow, died on Monday, June 19, 2017, in Waterville. She was born in Portland on September 3, 1929, one of 13 children of Marjorie (Winslow) and William Markee.

Lorraine grew up in Winslow and graduated from Winslow High School.

Lorraine worked intermittently through the years in various places but her life’s work was of a devoted wife and mother–a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. Hers’ was the gift of hospitality where all were welcome and family was deeply cared for no matter the reason. She enjoyed playing cards, putting together puzzles, solving crossword puzzles and teaching the math of cribbage to her children and grandchildren.

Lorraine will be remember for her selflessness, generosity, unconditional love for all, and especially her smile and contagious laugh.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Richard, who died in 2011, and her daughter Bette Boucher in 2013.

She is survived by four children: Susan Levesque and husband Ronald; Marsha Gilbert and husband Arthur; David Boucher and wife Lynda; Cynthia Ouellette and husband Joseph; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister and three brothers: Dorothy Rideout; Dale Markee and wife Nancy; James Markee and wife Ivy; Tom Markee and wife Claudette; four sisters-in-law: Ruth, Betty, Gayle and Jewell; and well as her friend and companion of many years, James French; nieces, nephews and cousins.

VAUGHN PIERCE

WEEKS MILLS––Vaughn Pierce, 94, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at his home. Vaughn was born September 21, 1922, to Fred A. and Annie A. (Berry) Pierce and was the youngest of five children including two brothers and two sisters.

He started grammar school in Weeks Mills and later attended high school at Erskine Academy where he met his wife of 72 years, Laura Margaret (Dow) Pierce. After graduating in 1940 he joined the “Civilian Conservation Corps”.

Vaughn and Margaret were married on July 26, 1943, after he enlisted to serve his country in the US Navy. During World War II, he served on several transport ships as a third class gunners mate and as a military policeman. Vaughn was honorably discharged December 4, 1945, and returned home. Vaughn and Margaret settled down in Weeks Mills village in a small house on the Sheepscot River where they raised their family. He then worked for Bath Iron Works as a welder before to work for the state of Maine as a mechanic and welder for the rest of his career.

Vaughn enjoyed a life time of hunting, fishing, and trapping with friends and family. He truly enjoyed nature and spent many days cutting firewood at the hunting camp on Deer Hill. Every morning he would host a small crew for coffee, doughnuts and a game of cribbage at his home before sending everyone off to work or heading out into the woods.

Vaughn lived most of his life in Weeks Mills and he was very involved with his community. He helped his father maintain the Weeks Mills Water District, helped start the Weeks Mills Volunteer Fire Department and the Weeks Mills Little League team that he coached at the ball diamond he made in the pasture behind his house. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #179 as well as the Dirigo Masonic Lodge #104. He also worked to preserve the Weeks Mills school house.

Vaughn will be remembered for being kind, friendly, hardworking, modest, easy going, and sharp minded. He had a wealth of local knowledge and was always good for an entertaining story. His pride was his family and one of his greatest joys was knowing the Pierce family name would continue.

Vaughn is survived by his four children and their spouses, Emery and Ann Pierce, of Windsor, Scott and Kyle Pierce, of Weeks Mills, Pamela Berry, of Andover and Priscilla and Bob Branen, of Windsor; seven grandchildren and spouses, Sean Pierce, of China, Betsy Branen, of Windsor, Teague and Tricia Berry, of Windsor, Justin Pierce, of Weeks Mills, Ryan and Cortney Pierce, of China, Nathanael and Brittany Pierce, of Buxton, and Christopher and Cassandra Pierce, of Weeks Mills; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

KEVIN P. MORRISSEY

WINSLOW – Kevin P. Morrissey, 79, passed away following a long struggle with COPD and cancer. He was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on October 22, 1937. The 11th child of 12, born to Raymond and Louise (Boudrot) Morrissey, He was raised in Danvers, Massachusetts and attended Danvers Schools. He worked as a machinist most of his life, on jet engine components.

In 1982, he married his soulmate, Norma Cote. They moved to Maine in 1988. He worked as a handyman for the elderly in Franklin and upper Oxford counties for Senior’s Plus until his retirement in 2003. He always claimed that serving the elderly was his greatest reward in all his working years. With his wife, Norma, he moved from Livermore Falls to Winslow in 2006 and enjoyed decorating the home for special holidays. Halloween and Christmas were his favorites.

He was a member of Asylum Lodge #133 A.F. & A. M., in Leeds. He was an avid golfer and played his first round of golf as a caddy in 1947. In August of 2015, he realized his “dream come true” by playing the course he caddied at 60 years ago. In his last years, he really enjoyed playing in the “Gangbusters” League at J. W. Parks Golf Club, in Pittsfield.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Winslow; four children, Kim Morrissey and husband Peter Bourgoine, of Gulfport, Florida, Kelly Morrissey and life partner Francois Gossieaux, of Andover, Massachusetts, David, of Georgetown, Massachusetts, Brooke Newcomb and husband Wayne, of Topsfield, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Nicholas Luoma, of Vermont, Alexander Luoma, of New Hampshire, Brenden Amnott, of Massachusetts; new great grandchild, Harley; a sister, Barbara Hines, of Florida; two brothers Robert and wife Claire, of Florida, Neil and wife Nancy, of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Judy Cote, of Blufton, South Carolina, Celia Morrissey, of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Martin, Richard, Stanley, Paul, David, and James Morrissey; two sisters, Joan Enos and Virginia Brooks; a very special brother-in-law, Howard Brooks who was always there in times of need.

CYNTHIA M. BOIVIN

UNITY––Cynthia (Cindy) Mardet Boivin, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 25, 2017. She was born on September 9, 1959, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Richard M. Farrar and Edna A. (Gingras) Farrar. She was originally from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and had lived in Unity since 1970.

Cindy was a 1977 graduate of Mt. View High School, in Thorndike, where she was part of the gymnastic team.

For 30 years she worked at Irving Tanning Company, in Hartland, after which she graduated third in her class at Kennebec Valley Community College in 2009 at 50 years old.

In 2010, Cindy started working at Adam Speech Therapy as a speech pathologist. She lived her entire life to serve the wants and needs of others and helping the children soothed her soul.

Cindy cherished the times surrounded by family.

Cindy is survived by Richard and Edna Farrar (her mom and dad), of Unity; brother Richard (Butch) Farrar, of Unity; sisters, Alice (Farrar) Margolies, of Red Bank, New Jersey, Hope (Farrar) Hitchcock, of Unity; daughter, Torrie Boivin and family, Crystal Medina, Colton Medina and Zachary Boivin, of Unity; son, Michael Boivin and family Crystal Lamkin, Mike Lamkin, Michelle Boivin, Mitchell Boivin, of Unity; daughter Ashley Boivin and family, Lillian Boivin, of Unity; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on June 25, 2017, at the Bible Baptist church, 32 School St., Unity, with a celebration of her life to follow from 2–4 p.m. at the Unity Performing Arts Center, 42 Depot St., Unity.

WHITEFIELD––Edward James Larrabee Jr., 68, of Whitefield, passed away, at the home of his sister Lillian, on May 28, 2017, following a long illness.

Edward was predeceased by his father, Edward Larrabee Sr.; mother, Marguerite (Russell) Larrabee; and brother, Leslie Larrabee.

Edward is survived by his longtime love, Theresa Russell; children, Eva Russell, Judy (Peaslee) Solomon and Jacob Hertzig; nine grandchildren; brothers, Clarence and wife Betty, and Russell Larrabee; sisters, Lillian and husband Paul, and Betty and husband Timothy; as well as many nieces and nephews.

SANDRA J. MATHIEU

VASSALBORO––Sandra Jones Mathieu, 65, of Vassalboro, passed away at home on Monday, May 29, 2017. She was born March 19, 1952, in Gardiner, to Roland and Geraldine Jones.

Her interests included snowmobiling, NASCAR races, and sightseeing. When she had children, she was actively involved in school events and life changes. She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Aria and watching her grow. Later, her hobbies included traveling, with the occasional trip to Hollywood slots.

Sandra’s professional career was very accomplished. After high school, she worked at Pine State Trading Company as a receptionist. She then held the director of shared services position at Maine HealthCare for 25 years. She continued to further her career and worked as the executive director at Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Maine for 13 years. Her retirement was cut short, although she was able to enjoy time with her family.

All who knew Sandra, even for a short time, were inspired by her contagious, positive spirit and vibrancy. Her humor and kindness were endless and she always lit up the room wherever she went.

She was predeceased by her father Roland Jones, brother Steven Jones, sister Diana Jones, and nephew Joshua Jones.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Carl Mathieu, of Vassalboro; two daughters, Ashley Mathieu and Michelle Mathieu; son-in-law Joshua Scott; granddaughter Aria Scott; her mother, Geraldine Jones, 88, of Jefferson; and many brothers and sisters.

LESTER B. DAVIS

PALERMO––Lester B. Davis, 89, of Palermo, died on Monday, May 29, 2017, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Washington, D.C. on April 6, 1928, the son of Lester and Neva Davis.

Lester served in the U.S. Army. He married Dorothy Eleanor Deyoe on June 5, 1949.

Lester’s work history included: treasurer for the City of College Park, Maryland; Metropolitan Life Insurance, in Wilton and Augusta; and Lester B. Davis Tax and Business Services, in Palermo.

Lester served as a volunteer with the Boys Club in College Park and as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 222, in Palermo. He was the announcer for the wrestling and basketball teams at Erskine Academy for 30 years. He was recently honored for this accomplishment. Lester had a particular fondness for the staff and students at Erskine Academy. He was also interested in researching family genealogy.

In October, 2016, he traveled to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight for veterans. It was a very memorable experience for him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor.

He is survived by his six children, Bonnie Davis, Cheryl Jones and husband David, Glen Davis and partner, Pat Belanger, Kathy Cheeseman and husband David, Sandra Randall and fiancé Sam Grenier, and James Davis and wife, Karen. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

ARTHUR B. H ALL

PALERMO––Arthur Bruce Hall, 74, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Maine Medical Center, in Portland. He was born on June 13, 1942, to Arthur Paul Hall and Margaret T. Jenesco.

Arthur was called “Bruce” by everyone who knew him. He graduated from Erskine Academy, in South China, and went on to work for Kenway Boats. He was a mechanic at Elis Auto, and then he worked for the Maine DOT, where he serviced the road striping equipment. Bruce was also the president of F & H Pavement Marking Co. for several years before resigning and forming Hall’s Striping Inc., with his wife Shirley. He built all the striping machines himself. Bruce also served in the Maine National Guard.

In February 1984, he married Shirley Patterson Houston, in Palermo. They had 33 wonderful years together. They traveled to the Hawaiian Islands, California, South Carolina, and Virginia for golfing, as well as playing many courses in Maine.

On September 16, 1997, Bruce got a “hole-in-one” on hole #9 at Country View Golf Club, in Brooks. Bruce was a member at Natanis Golf Course, in Vassalboro, for several years.

Bruce loved to fish and he enjoyed hunting as well, in his early years. He like to grow fruits and vegetables like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, plums, peaches, cherries, and rhubarb. Bruce also grew orchids and was a member of the American Orchid Society. Along with his planting, Bruce enjoyed and liked the challenge of fixing things that no longer worked, such as household appliances and cars.

Bruce would sing along with the music of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Shirley;p three sons, Rodney and wife Angel, of Palermo; Bradley and wife Shelly, of Windsor; and Benjamin and wife Alissa, of Douglas, Massachusetts; and grandchildren, Emily, Kaitlyn, Nathan, and Riley.

JEFFREY P. FENLASON

OAKLAND, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina––Jeffrey Paul Fenlason, 53, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 1, 2017, in his sleep at home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Jeffrey was born on June 5, 1963, in Waterville, the son of Ronald and Louise Fenlason.

He lived most of his life in Oakland, graduating from Messalonskee High School in 1981. He graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 1989. Jeffrey earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia Southern University in 2011 in criminal justice adminstration. He gave 28 years to serving as a police officer and police chief, until moving to South Carolina in 2014, where he worked a program manager at Grand Strand Hospital’s security department.

Jeffrey was the kindest, most gentle, and generous man; and everyone he touched loved him. As an officer, he took special concern in helping the children in the situation he was call to, and he always carried teddy bears in his cruiser for them. He would do anything for anyone and was always honest, humble, loyal, and loving.

He loved riding his Harley, kayaking, and especially the beach.

Jeffrey is survived by wife Michelle Fenlason; parents Ronald and Louise Fenlason, of Oakland; daughter Amy Fenlason, of Manchester, New Hampshire; brothers, Steve Fenlason and wife Lori, of Gardiner, and David Fenlason, of San Diego, California; granddaughters, Ayeesha and Tiana Gale, of Manchester, New Hampshire; Michelle’s sons, Josh and Jake LePage, of Winslow; his in-laws, Roger and Lorraine Buker, of Winslow; nephews, Ben Fenlason, Christopher Storer, and Mark Greenlaw; and many brothers and sister in-laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

UNITY––Rebekah E. Hubbard, 82, passed away Friday, June 2, 2017, at her home following a long illness. Becky was born in Gardiner on July 6, 1934, to Merle and Catherine (Knox) Trask.

She helped support her family with many jobs over the years. She enjoyed many hobbies, including playing cards, cooking, and taking care of her rose bushes.

Becky was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Melvin Hubbard Sr.; son, Melvin Jr.; daughter, Virgina; and granddaughter, Crystal Moreno.

VIVIAN M. CLARK

ALBION––Vivian Marie (Gee) Clark passed away on Saturday, June 3, 3017. Vivian was born in Summerfield, New Brunswick, Canada, on October 5, 1920, the middle child of Merrill and Amy (Green) Gee.

On December 28, 1940, Vivian married Glenn Clark and they moved to Albion with Glenn’s family.

In 1949, Glenn and Vivian moved to the house on East Benton Road, in Albion, and remained there until Glenn’s passing in 2009.

She was a member of the Albion Extension ladies group. She sewed and preserved and always had something wonderful to eat for whoever stopped by.

Vivian was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Glenn L. Clark; son Leland; and great-grandson Alexander L. Hathaway; and was also predeceased by Phyllis, Dorothy, Manson, and Kathleen, as she is the last member of her siblings to pass away.

Vivian is survived by her son, Graydon Clark (Kayan), and their children, Sarah (Jeremy), Deanna (Rick), and Matthew (Crystal); daughter Pamela Gilbert (Ray) and their children, Amy (Brian), Jennifer (Andre), Holly (Jeff), Brian (Amanda, and Chris (Aimee); daughter-in-law Tami and children, Violet (Tim), John (Michelle), Joy (Chris), Tonya, and Chauncey; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

FREDERICK M. STEEVES

VASSALBORO––Frederick Maynard Steeves, 79, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Maine Veterans Hospice Center, in Augusta. He was born May 30, 1938, in Rockland, the son of Charles Steven Steeves and Edna (Lathrop) Steeves.

He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the US Air Force until his honorable discharge. He also trained with the Marine Corps.

On March 14, 1986, he married Nancy Hastings, in Seward, Alaska. In his younger days, he worked for a fire truck production company and in the chicken industry. He also was a fisherman in New Bedford. After moving to Seward, Alaska, in 1965, he owned his own marine welding business. He was also a fisherman, trapper, bear guide, and bus driver.

Fred was a member of the Centerpoint Community Church, lions International, the American Legion, and Pioneers of Alaska. He enjoyed hunting, photography, flower gardening and gold panning.

He was predeceased by his parents; a grandchild; several sisters, brothers, nephews, and nieces.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy (Hastings) Steeves, of Vassalboro; children, “Alan Steeves, Bobby Raynes, Mark Steeves and wife Jeanmarie, Trilby Post, Noreen Skillman and husband Dan, Jay Sturm, and Joe Sturm; three sisters, Ruth Kyte, Priscilla Lundevahl, and Alaide Hopper and husband James; two brothers, Wayne Steeves and wife Carla, and Leslie Steeves, 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DOROTHY GARDINER

UNITY––Dorothy (Dot) Gardiner, 85, of Unity, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Dorothy was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Clifton Doughty and Mildred Janvrin, on November 26, 1931.

On May 13, 1948, Dot married Maurice Gardiner. They were married for 57 years prior to his passing in 2005. They were Connecticut residents for 30 years and moved back to Maine in 1988. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading, quilting, finding a bargain at tag sales, and cheering for the Boston Red Sox.

She was predeceased by her sister Mildred (Raven) Brown.

Dorothy is survived by her four children, Laura Preli, Mark Gardiner and wife Patricia, of Connecticut, John Gardiner, of Maine, Matthew Gardiner and husband Hal Beattie, of Florida; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Tammy McCue, Eric and wife Dallas McCue, both of Maine, Karin McCue and partner Jodie Dube, Cherise Ball, Luke, Daniel, Ben and wife Megan, Timothy, and Krista Gardiner, all of Connecticut, Julia and Zachary Gardiner, of Florida. She also leaves 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great- grandchildren; four brothers, Clifton, Linwood, Ralph and Emerson Doughty; two sisters Nancy (Kitty) Doughty and Linda Rollerson; and many nieces and nephews.

GERARD E. LOUBIER, 89, of Suffield, Connecticut, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at River’s Watch, in Suffield, three days after the passing of his wife, Therese. He was born in Beauceville, Québec, Canada, on January 13, 1928, but was raised in Waterville, moving to Enfield, Connecticut, in 1955. Locally, he is survived by a brother, Lucien Loubier and wife Anita, of Winslow, and sisters-in-law, Betty Loubier, of Winslow, and Jackie Vigue, of Waterville.

WALDO H. COVELL, 84, of Orono, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, in Orono. Wally served as the successsor to John Winkin as head baseball coach at Colby College, in Waterville, from 1974 – 1984, and was an assistant coach on the 2006 Class A state championship Lawrence High School football team, in Fairfield. Locally, he is survived by a daughter, Schari Roy and husband Michael, of Waterville.

HOWARD R. WILSON

VASSALBORO – Howard R. Wilson, 81, of Vassalboro, passed away Thursday May 11, 2017, at the Togus VA Pallative Care Unit, in Augusta. Howard was born on August 10,1935, in Augusta, to his parents Lew A. Wilson and Rena (Barrows) Wilson.

He attended Cony High School for a while and then joined the U.S. Air Force where he earned his GED and graduated courses for jet bomber mechanic. He received the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal as well as earning the rank of First Class Airman A/C-1.

While serving he met and married the former Dorothy A. Holm, and they had eight children together .

During the course of his life he worked various positions – a heat treat operator at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, in Middletown, Connecticut, jet mechanic, and multiple laboring positions over the years and then retired after many years of service from Cives Steel, in Augusta.

He loved fishing, boating, hunting and gardening (he had quite a green thumb). He loved to lawn sale, pick fiddleheads, and putter with his tractor and various projects. He loved to feed his wild animals – birds, squirrels, raccoons. He spent many an hour fixing their food.

He was predeceased by his wife Donna M. (Tweedie) Wilson; his parents; and first wife Dorothy.

He is survived by his eight children, Julie White and husband Keith, Gerald Wilson and wife Brenda, Robert Wilson, Guy Wilson, Suzanne Dudley, Clay Wilson, Stacey Wilson and wife Renee, Lisa Emery and husband Don; his two sisters, Judith Ashby, Jane Johnson and his brother Stanley Wilson; multiple stepchildren; and numerous grandchildren.

LYNETTE W. SIMS

VASSALBORO – Lynnette (Weston) Sims, “Lynnie,” passed away peacefully at her home, in Vassalboro, on May 20, 2017, following a courageous battle with ALS. She was born November 16, 1961, in Augusta.

She also lived in Hallowell, Coopers Mills, Waterville and Vassalboro.

She was predeceased by her mother Isabelle (Lincoln), her father Hubert Weston, and her brothers Douglas and Martin Weston.

She is survived by her husband and best friend, John Sims, of Vassalboro; her daughter Jacinth Allard, her husband Zachary, and grandson Mason, of China; her son Thomas Sims and his wife Asia Alexis-Sims, and expected baby, of Waterville; her mother-in-law Jean Sims; her sisters, Donna, Joyce, and Christine; along with cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Lynnette was a graduate of Erskine Academy Class of 1980.

Lynnette was employed at L.L.Bean for over 15 years. Lynnie grew up riding and training horses, and loved telling stories of trail rides she took, while ringing bells to warn off bears. She loved to dance, and won numerous competitions in her “hey-day.”

She was an active participant at her children’s school, volunteering baked goods, assisting teachers, helping with field trips, and being a Girl Scout leader for numerous years.

Lynnie’s biggest joy in life was her family. She loved spending time and causing trouble with her sisters: a mysteriously epic outhouse fire, a few pumpkins wandering off, and numerous late night giggle sessions with cousins and a famous “talent.” She supported her husband’s fishing addiction while reading romance novels in the canoe.

ROBERTA J. McPHETERS

FAIRFIELD – Roberta (Bobbie) Joyce McPheters, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2017. Bobbie was born in Waterville on June 10, 1935, to Madeline Dunn.

She graduated from Waterville High School.

Bobbie worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for a few different companies over the years. After retirement she often told wonderful, detailed stories about her experiences and the people she worked with at North Street Dairy, Sterns Department Store and Bill’s Tire Company, all in Waterville.

She married Mark McPheters in 1955 and they were married 62 years. At recent family weddings they easily won the generation dances. Throughout the years Bobbie was a member of various organizations and volunteered her time for Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, Fairfield Woman’s Club, The First Baptist Church, in Waterville, and as a Fairfield town ballot clerk. All who knew Bobbie knew that what made her the most happy was working on her endless knitting, sewing, paper crafts projects and reading books. A shopping trip to Yard Goods Cent4er, in Waterville, was her favorite activity. Her little known paintings and charcoal drawings are also treasured by family.

Bobbie is remembered for her generosity, determination, patience, willingness to listen, common sense advice and her wit.

She is survived by her husband Mark McPheters; her son Mark McPheters II and his wife Lynn of Richmond, her daughter Mary Scanlon and her husband Neil of Bethel; her sister Mary Merrick and her husband Jimmy of Fairfield; her beloved nieces, Barbara Guimond and Lenette MacDonald and their families; her loving grandchildren Kaitlin Hilchey, Benjamin McPheters, Cody-Ann Scanlon and Cassidy Scanlon; and great grandchildren Sophie Harbaugh and Jolene McPheters.

MARK V. GOLDEN

OAKLAND – Mark Vincent Golden, 58, died Monday, May 22, 2017, at Gray Birch Long Term Care, in Augusta. Mark was born on November 2, 1958, to Dorothea Cunningham Golden.

He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Eugene Sipowicz. Mark attended school in Hallowell and Readfield and was among the first class to graduate at Maranacook High School in 1977.

He received a scholarship at graduation and attended Texas Bible College, in Texas. While in Texas he was employed at the Johnson Space Center. When he returned to Maine he followed his dream and started his own business as a landscaper and became a licensed master arborist. For 30 years Mark left his “golden touch” in every county except Aroostook. In 2012, Mark was proud to have completed his A.S. degree in Theology through correspondence courses.

Mark has always been an avid Red Sox fan. He even caught a fly ball at Fenway Park and players autographed it after the game.

He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothea Sipowicz, stepfather, Eugene Sipowicz; and brother-in-law Donald Carleton.

Mark is survived by his sons Derek Baker and Jesse Baker, of Randolph, and daughter Markayla Morris, of Skowhegan; his sisters and brothers, Judy Carleton, John (Wayne) Golden, Paul Golden, Carollee Robinson, Karen O’Brien, and Gale Hasenfus as well as several nieces and nephews.

STORMY A. GUZZO

BENTON – Stormy Angel Guzzo, 17, of Benton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, as the result of a tragic automobile accident. She was born in Waterville on October 3, 1999, the daughter of Lori Tozier and Raymond Guzzo.

She attended Lawrence High School, Dean Baker Academy.

Stormy was employed at her dad’s wood lot as a crew chief and wood cutter. She was also a winger for Fairfield PAL hockey and participated in the Christian Dutch Reformed Church, in Newport.

Stormy enjoyed all types of music, going fishing, hunting, and trapping, working on her Cummings Diesel, and was an excellent photographer, taking photos of all the above and beautiful photos of sunsets and scenery.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Herbert and Rose Tozier and Anthony and Louise Guzzo.

Stormy will be greatly missed by her mother and stepfather, Lori Tozier and Jeffrey Maitland, of Benton, her father and his significant other, Raymond Guzzo and Donna Ward, of Benton; her brothers, Steven Guzzo, of Newburg, New York, Anthony Guzzo, of Middletown, New York Thomas Tozier, of Ft. THERESA F. HARRISON

ALBION – Theresa F. Harrison, of Albion, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, in Albion. She was born in Wilton on April 6, 1930, the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Costello.

She married Augustus Harrison and the couple shared over 50 years of marriage until his passing.

Theresa retired from C.F. Hathaway Co., in Waterville, following 47 years of dedicated service.

Her greatest joy was when she was with family and friends. Theresa enjoyed many summers on Unity Pond, lobster and clam cookouts (where she always made sure there was plenty to eat), and she truly loved her cats and any other cats that would wonder over to her door. She was also a big New England sports fan.

She and her husband also enjoyed their weekly adventure of following harness racing throughout the state. Theresa always wanted to drive to Florida and see the sights. Her son Greg made that happen; she loved the view through the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Poconos, and while in Florida, she enjoyed her thrift shops, yard sales, flea markets, and of course the warm weather.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her son, John Harrison, her daughter, Brenda Rich. her son-in-law, Roger Rich; her brothers, Stanley and Edward Costello, and her sisters, Helen Sylvester, Celia Hunt, and Jenny Bessey.

Theresa will be sadly missed by her sons, Mike Harrison, of Winslow, Steven Harrison and his wife Jennifer, and Greg Harrison and his wife Arlene, all of Albion; 13 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

JOHN W. SHORT JR.

FAIRFIELD – John W. Short Sr., 75, passed away in Waterville on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. John Short was born on March 23, 1942, in Fairfield, the son of Frederick H. Short Sr. and Ethel B. (Towle) Short.

He was a graduate of Lawrence High School, class of 1961 and went into the Army National Guard where he was stationed in West Point, New York.

John’s teenage years were spent with the pedal to the metal as a teenager doing timed street racing in Florida.

John was a proud ironworker and master welder of Local #496, working throughout the state of Maine. In later years, he went on to drive milk truck for the late Butch Clark of Clark Milk Transport out of Canaan.

He was a member of the NRA, American Legion, Elks Lodge and attended the East Benton Christian Church.

John was a life-long, avid sportsman and believed hunting and fishing was more than just a sport, it was a lifestyle where quality family time and cherished memories could be made. He truly lived up to Maine’s saying, “Maine, the way life should be.” It is agreed by all, that some of the fondest family memories was time spent camping at Cathedral Pines, in Eustis.

John was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Joan (Letourneau) Short of 42 years; son Frederick H. Short IV; and friend, Pat Deblois.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Dixon) Short; his children, Dana J. Short, Debra Short, widow to the late Fred Short, Tina and David Newell, John and Ali Short, and David A. MURIEL P. FRYE, 92, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at the Mennonite Home, in Lancaster. She lived in Waterville for many years with her husband Miles P. Frye on Bartlett Street. She went to school at the University of Maine and got her bachelor’s degree, and went on to get a masters degree at the New York School of Social Work. Not many women of her generation went on to an advanced degree. She became involved in many organizations volunteering her time to include the Home for the Mentally Retarded, was President of the Woman’s Garden Club, became a member of the school board for the Watervile local school system, and was a director at the Sunset Home. Her crowning achievement was becoming an advocate for the local technical college, Kennebec Valley Community College, helping them to get enough funding to build an entirely new campus and grow exponentially. Her assistance was rewarded with a building being named after her which to this day is called The Muriel P. Frye building. Muriel had two children, daughter Rebecca Frye Marin whose husband is Dan Marin, and son Andrew Miles Frye whose wife is Gladys Frye. She had three grandchildren, granddaughter Stephanie Purnell whose husband is Kevin Purnell II, granddaughter Andrea Frye and grandson Miles Reed Frye. CARMEN B. WELCH

WINSLOW––Carmen Begin Welch, 69, of Winslow, passed away at home Saturday, May 6, 2017. She was born in Lewiston, the daughter of Leopold and Yvette Begin.

Carmen graduated from Lewiston High School, and then went on to earn an associate degree from Bliss College as the first in her family to obtain a college education. She started her working career in Lewiston at Central Maine Power Co. and worked a number of years at SAPPI’s Somerset Mill, in Hinckley, in the purchasing department. She then spent many years at International Paper, Augusta, (Woodlands Division) in the human resources department. After graduating with a bachelor of science in business administration from Husson College, in Bangor, she was promoted to human resources manager. Carmen was an asset in her role at IP, as her ability to communicate in fluent French was helpful with some of the border regions where she worked. When IP closed the Northeast Division, she then finished her human resource career at the state of Maine, Natural Resources Service Center, retiring in 2012 after 30 years of service in human resources.

Carmen married Robert Welch in 1972, in Lewiston, and resided in Winslow for 40 years. Carmen loved music, particularly playing the lap steel guitar, a joy perfected since the age of eight years old. She also played acoustic guitar, harmonica, ukulele and piano, all self-taught. She played music with her family and as part of a group on weekly visits to nursing homes. She also enjoyed spending summers on the lake with family, painting, wood carving and gardening. She could do anything to which she put her mind. She loved animals, especially cats, and traveling near and far with her family and friends.

Carmen was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be remembered for her kind and beautiful heart, witty sense of humor, and exceptional musical and artistic talents. She was quick with a kind word or joke, and was always conscious of the wellbeing of others. Carmen was a communicant at St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow.

Carmen is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert Welch; two sons Eric Welch and Daniel Welch; daughter Kristine Welch Taylor; her two brothers Larry Begin and Conrad Begin; two sisters Anne (Begin) Tetreault and Claire (Begin) Amero; two grandsons, Brodee and Beckett Welch; and many nieces and nephews.

BARBARA A. LEIGHTON

FAIRFIELD––Barbara Ann Appleton Leighton, 83, of Fairfield, passed away, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at home. Barbara was born January 3, 1934, in Barre, Vermont, to Vivian Lillian Cleora Dodge Appleton and William Raymond Appleton.

She grew up in West Newbury, Vermont, and graduated high school among a class of only nine students. She attended University of Vermont School of Nursing, where she graduated with a B.S.N. in 1956. Barbara worked in pediatric nursing at hospitals in California, New York, and Waterville, including Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, U.C.L.A. Medical Center, Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, and Sisters Hospital in Waterville from 1956 until 1971, and taught nursing from 1972 until her retirement in 1978.

Barbara married Franklin Milo Leighton on April 14, 1963. The couple moved to Fairfield where they raised their sons and lived the rest of their lives. Barbara was a dedicated, creative, innovative mother and grandmother, and encouraged her sons to explore any subject that interested them. From Judo to football, and rock collecting to meteorology, she found inventive ways to encourage her sons to have the curiosity and courage to try new things. She was always attentive and supportive of her boys, their children, and their friends.

Barbara enjoyed many artistic activities, including painting, jewelry making, and even tried her hand at scrimshaw. Her favorite hobby was cooking, and she had a great passion for trying new recipes.

Barbara was very generous, and often gave away pieces of jewelry she had made, and shared her recipes and was delighted to feed family and friends at every opportunity. If you met her you left with piece of jewelry, a recipe, a full heart and a full belly. No one who met her was ever the same; she taught us all things we will keep with us all our lives. She made everyone feel special.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Milo Leighton and her aunt, Bettina Prior, of Wallingford, Connecticut.

She is survived by sons, Scott Franklin Leighton, of Clinton, and Marc Raymond Leighton and his wife, Tina, of Fairfield; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Zachary, Scott, and Kaylie.

John was a graduate of Erskine Academy, in China, class of 1946. The next morning, he left for the Air Force. He took his first training at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. He went to Biloxi, Mississippi, for A&E mechanics school. He spent service time in California then left from Washing­ton State for Alaska on a ship that was built at Bath Iron Works. That always meant a lot to him. He was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, as well as Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands. He was crew chief on an H 5 Sikorsky helicopter in the Air and Sea Rescue Unit. Upon his father’s death back in Maine in January 1949, John was transferred to Westover Air Force Base, in Massachusetts. His position there was fueling the bombers in support of the Berlin Airlift in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in June 1949.

In 1950, John married the former Jeannette A. Wood. They have been married 66 glorious years.

John worked at Densmore Store, in Branch Mills, North Vassalboro, Woolen Mill and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in the experimental testing unit in East Hartford, Connecticut. Upon his return to Maine in 1956, he worked at Hallowell and Webb in Augusta and for the state of Maine, Department of Transportation as a mechanic, retiring in 1982.

John will be remembered for his love of family, kindness, and gentleness to all young people. He loved music, singing, playing his guitar, the Windsor Historical Society, hunting, fishing, attending Palermo Christian Church, camping, the Red Sox, gardening, eating out and a hot cup of coffee from Tobey’s Grocery. Anyone who knew him knew he was a great joke teller. He anxiously awaited each issue of the Reader’s Digest for fresh material.

John was predeceased by his sister, Juanita Rines, her husband Joseph and a nephew Jack Rines.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeannette (Wood) Scates; his children: Kerry and Deborah Scates, Rudy Scates and AJ Dinkins, Linda and Tom Vigue and Dennis and Tracy Scates. seven grandchildren: Derek and Liz Scates, Jennie and Steve Williams, Andrew and Renée Scates, Sarah and Steve Finley, Brian Vigue, Peter Misiura, Cassie Scates and Shyler Scates; three great-grandchildren: Katherine, Steven and Victoria Williams; brother-in-law Allen Wood and his wife Gloria; a nephew Joseph Rines and wife Mary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.

REV. MONSIGNOR ROBERT G. LAVOIE, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Manor, in Portland. The Monsignor served for 12 years at St. John the Baptist Church, in Winslow. Following his retirement in 2007, he resided at Mount St. Joseph Home, in Waterville. During his retirement he helped out with weekend Masses in many area churches.

IRENE A. POTTER

WHITEFIELD––Irene Adell Potter, 82, passed away in her sleep Sunday, April 23, 2017. Irene was born on June 15 , 1934, in Readfield Depot, to Ruth and Wesley Adell.

She graduated from Kents Hill School in 1953.

Irene worked for many years at HP Hood, the Readfield Town Office, and retired from Mitchell and Davis law firm in 1997.

Irene and her husband, Jack Clarke, owned and operated Clarke Transport from the mid 1970s until the early 1990s with Jack’s untimely passing in 1981 from cancer.

Irene married Hubert Potter, her high school sweetheart, in 1999. They enjoyed many years together gardening, attending car shows and spending time with family and friends until Hubert’s passing in 2008. In her later years, Irene enjoyed watching the many birds and squirrels at her window birdfeeder, the deer, turkeys and even the ground hogs that lived on her property. She was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast, enjoyed knitting and watching “her shows” and loved her beautiful flower gardens, especially the garden she had planted in honor of her aunt Mildred.

Irene is survived by her son, Wayne Whitman and his wife, Kim, of Readfield; sister, Evelyn Potter, of Readfield; nieces Sandi Potter Clarke and Dale Potter Clarke; stepdaughter, Tonya Ballard and husband Tom, of Morrill; stepson, Dorian Potter; grandchildren, Laura and Justin Lamport, Jake, Sam and Hannah Whitman, Michael Ballard and Meghan Pittis; as well as two great-granddaughters.

GERALDINE R. BRACKETT

SOUTH CHINA–––Geraldine Richardson Brackett, 92, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at home in South China. She was born October 7, 1924, in North Monmouth, the first of five daughters of Jesse A. and Evelyn Jordan Richardson.

Gerry graduated from North Monmouth Academy and received her B.S. degree in teaching from Farmington State Teachers College. Teaching was her passion and she touched the lives of many young people during her 47 year career.

She started teaching in a one room school house in Sandy River Plantation, taught many grades in Rangeley and Auburn and finished at Weare Baptist Christian School after her official retirement.

She married Reynold C. Brackett (Pen) on July 12, 1946, and together they had three children, Nancy, Mark and Hope. One of their greatest sorrows was the loss of Nancy too early in 1976. They resided in Rangeley until their retirement when they moved to their dream home in Henniker, New Hampshire. They were happily married for 44 years until Pen’s death in July, 1990. At 73, she built a new home she loved in Loudon, New Hampshire, where she lived until she moved to South China to be with her daughter.

Wherever Gerry lived she made wonderful lasting friendships from work, church and other organizations. She was caring and generous with her time and resources. She would offer her home for Bible studies, meals and gatherings. Many had the opportunity to taste her fabulous cooking.

She had many interests including cooking, gardening and traveling whenever she had the opportunity. She especially loved trips with family in their camper. She loved the ocean, lighthouses, loons, cardinals and flowers. Gerry had a strong faith and was very active in church activities in each community in which she lived. She was a member of the Rangeley Free Baptist church, the Weare Baptist Church and the Landmark Baptist Church, in Loudon. She volunteered for the John O. Cates van in Loudon, New Hampshire, where she made a difference by assisting with transporting local residents. She was a life-long member of the NEA & ßßMEA teachers associations. In her retirement she enjoyed the Loudon Young at Heart group and had many happy memories of their excursions and events.

Gerry was predeceased by her husband Pen; daughter Nancy Dunham; sisters, Janice Doyan, Jean Brackett and Pauline Gove.

She will be sadly missed by her son Mark and wife Anne and children Zachary, Bethany, Nancy and Taylor, of Pembroke, New Hampshire; daughter Hope and husband Nelson Pendexter, of South China, and their children, Rebecca Viola and husband Joe, of Gardiner, Katrina Herrick and husband Charlie, of Damriscotta and Crystal Scott and husband Gary, of Monmouth; grandson Cliff Dunham and wife Maghean and daughter Erin, of Topsham; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one grand-niece; sister JoAnne Ricker, of Waterville.

A graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley, on June 10 at 1:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at Parkside and Main in downtown Rangeley.

FAIRFIELD––Debra-Jo “Deb” (Levesque) Jacques, 56, of Fairfield, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Maine­General Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born July 23, 1960, in Waterville, the daughter of David and Lillian (Lagueux) Levesque.

She owned and operated her own business for 10 years, Tweetie’s Nest Day Care, as she loved kids.

Deb loved the outdoors and going camping and fishing with her husband, siblings, and friends. She loved people and would always make herself available to them in times of need. Deb was a great cook and loved to make special dishes for her husband and family.

She was predeceased by her father, David Levesque; father-in-law, Richard Jacques; and mother-in-law, Germaine (Michaud) Jacques.

Deb is survived by her husband of 21 years, Mark Jacques, of Fairfield; two sons, Alex Jacques, of Fairfield, and David Fredette, of St. Lucie, Florida; daughter, Heather Boccella, of Austin, Texas; several grandchildren; mother, Lillian (Lagueux) Levesque, of Ft. Meyers, Florida; sisters, Rhonda Levesque, of Fairfield, and Lori (Levesque) Perry and husband Dick, of Estero, Florida; brother Mark Levesque and wife Chantal, of Scarborough; five brothers-in-law, Stewart Jacques and wife Elaine, of Sidney, David Jacques and wife Patricia, of Sidney, Dan Jacques, of Waterville, Raymond Jacques and wife Vicki, of Waterville, and Patrick Jacques and wife Lisa, of Sidney; sister-in-law Paula Dennis and partner Dan McNeal, of Waterville; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
