KENNETH R. JUDKINS

OHIO/WINSLOW­­ – Sgt/Major (retired) United States Army, Kenneth R. Judkins, formerly of Winslow, passed away at the home of his daughter, Donna Judkins Workman, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, in Conneaut, Ohio. He was born April 7, 1920, in Augusta, son of the late Harold C. and Gladys (Morin) Judkins.

Kenneth was educated in the Augusta schools and attended Cony High School. He obtained his GED in the Army, plus he received two years of college credits and educational certificates within the U.S. Army.

He served 21 years in the U.S. Army, including 27 months in the South Pacific Theater in World War II. Post war, he served in Europe in Germany and numerous U.S. bases, retiring as a Command Sgt. Major in 1964. Throughout his years of service, he was supported by, Barbara Olive (Sweet) Judkins, his wife of almost 70 years. They were married on June 30, 1943. She preceded him to eternity on November 28, 2013.

He was business manager of Northern Lebanon School District, in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, for three years. He returned to Maine in October 1967 as an assistant to Superintendent of Schools of Union #52, retiring in 1982. He did odd jobs until he joined the Kennebec Sheriff’s Department in 1984, where he attained the rank of lieutenant and was placed in charge of court security in Kennebec County. He worked there for seven years, retiring from the department in 1991.

He served on the Winslow Town Council in 1982 and was chairman from 1987-–88. He was an honorary member of Winslow Police Department, American Legion, member Veterans Foreign Wars, lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department and Maine Association of Retirees.

He moved to Conneaut, Ohio, in 2012 to live with his daughter and family, along with Barbara, when she became too ill for him to take care of by himself.

Kenneth attended Edgewood Christian Missionary Alliance Church regularly while living in Ohio with Donna.

Kenneth was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, in 2013, and brother, Dana, in 2016.

He is survived by daughters, Donna J. (Sid) Workman, NP, Elizabeth (Matt) Barbour; son Harold “Chuck” Judkins (Martha); nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; and a sister, Edith Brown, of Mesa, Arizona.

GEORGE H. TAYLOR

FAIRFIELD­­ – George H. Taylor, 94, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at his home in Fairfield. George was born January 14, 1923, in Waterville, son of Brunswick and Maude (Porterfield) Taylor.

He graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, and earned a degree in diesel mechanics from UEI in Chicago, Illinois.

He had a lifelong passion for cars and always owned several at a time, evident to anyone who drove by his house. He raced one time at Unity Raceway and won, driving his 1937 LaSalle.

George was well known and revered for his strong character and tireless work ethic. After dedicating 20 years to the family farm, he purchased his own truck to haul pulp in the winter and gravel in the summer. George also worked for the town of Fairfield for 65 years in various positions including director of public works, plumbing inspector, and as a volunteer firefighter. He maintained great physical strength lifelong, even cutting, splitting, and piling several cords of wood each year through the age of 93––last year, four cords alone!

George’s legacy as a beloved baseball coach is forever embedded in Central Maine’s youth sports history. A ball player himself, he played for Lawrence High and continued on in the old Somerset semi-pro league, playing left field for Kennebec Mills from the late 1940s into the early ‘50s. He began his coaching career in 1956 for the Waterville Elks-sponsored Babe Ruth team, and when Fairfield started its own Babe Ruth/PAL program the following year, George remained as a coach for 50 seasons. During that span, he also coached American Legion baseball for six years while his sons were playing in Fairfield. One season, he coached three teams at once across the Babe Ruth, Pony, and American Legion leagues. George took pride in his role as coach, teaching his players to put sportsmanship above all else while on the field and in the dugout. Between coaching games and practices, George could be found in his lawn chair behind home plate as a steadfast supporter of Lawrence High and all area Babe Ruth teams––­­youth baseball’s biggest fan.

George is survived by his sons, George “Allen” and wife Jeannean, of Skowhegan, Robert and wife Teresa, of Melbourne, Florida, Michael and wife Dawn, of Fairfield; step-children Clarence Whitman and wife Dottie, Bobby Whitman and wife Elizabeth, Bonnie Bucknam and husband Ron, of Oakland; seven grandchildren, George D. and wife Kathy, Gina, Shannon, Kristie and husband Josh, Nichole, Amanda and husband Johnny, and Ashley; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nephew Fred Taylor and wife Eleanor; nieces Carolyn Bushey and husband Frank, Laura Bartram; and his companion for many years, Joyce Nadeau.

VERNON E. HUTCHINS

JEFFERSON­­ – Vernon E. Hutchins, 83, of Jefferson, passed away at LincolnHealth­­––Miles Campus in Damariscotta on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, following a long struggle with declining health. He was born on January 17, 1934, son of Myron and Marguerite Hutchins, of Waldoboro.

He graduated from Waldoboro High in 1952 and attended the University of Maine in Orono for one year before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War.

Vernon married the former Carolyn Vannah, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1954.

His Navy career started in Washington, D.C. where he attended Fleet Training School. He served on submarine tenders in West Key, Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk, Virginia. In Newport, Rhode Island he taught battery alignment and gun fire support at the Fleet Training Center. In Groton, Connecticut he was an instructor at the Submarine Attack Center, from which he retired after serving 20 years as a chief fire control technician. He worked at Sears, Roebuck in New London, Connecticut, in the building supply department and for John Hancock Insurance Company before moving back to Maine in 1983.

Before retiring completely he drove a school bus for the town of Jefferson for a few years.

He was a longtime member of the Orff’s Corner Community Church where he served as a trustee and usher with his brother Raymond for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion in Waldoboro, the Fleet Reserve Association and the Jefferson Historical Society.

He was predeceased by parents, Myron and Marguerite Hutchins; and brother Raymond Hutchins.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 62 years; son Gary V. Hutchins and wife Sheila, of Salem, Connecticut; daughter Marcia Vertefeuille, of Frankfort; grandson, Justin Vertefeuille, of Belfast; granddaughters, Andrea Paxton and husband Bill, of Quaker Hill, Connecticut, Shelly Hutchins and partner Robert Richman, and Ashley Drago and husband Russell; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ethan, Ryan and Jack; brother Harold Hutchins and wife Cindy, of Waldoboro; and many nieces and nephews.

BRUCE VAN WAGNER

BENTON­­ – Bruce Van Wagner, 72, passed away at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, on Friday July 14, 2017, from a sudden illness. Bruce was born March 30, 1945, in Newport, Rhode Island, to Frederick and Roberta (Hubble) Van Wagner.

Bruce spent over ten years of active service in the U.S. Navy and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. Bruce experienced many careers including residential construction, general management and customer service. Regardless of his job, Bruce loved being able to interact with people as he was truly a people person – always putting the needs of others before his own. Bruce most recently worked at Brown’s Power Sports, in Benton, and Aubuchon Hardware, in Waterville.

Throughout his life he was an avid reader, die hard Patriots fan, and an experienced outdoors man. Bruce had many amazing experiences including a military project that was put on display at the Smithsonian Institute, in Washington, D.C.

Bruce was predeceased by both of his parents; and his three siblings.

He is survived by his stepmother Marguerite Van Wagner; wife Cheryl (Brown) Van Wagner; daughters Amanda McCaslin and Elizabeth Van Wagner; son Bruce G. Van Wagner; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

BENTON––John Webster Tapley, 78, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. John was born on September 30, 1938, in Waterville.

He attended Clinton High School.

He loved to go dancing and being with close friends. In later years, he enjoyed watching the old cowboy movies.

PRISCILLA MCINTYRE

WINSLOW – Priscilla McIntyre passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at her home in Winslow. She was born April 3, 1931, in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Roger and Agnes (Taylor) Farley.

Priscilla graduated from Brighton High School and the Boston Clerical School. She proudly worked as the secretary at Winslow High School for 25 years. Many past students would always remember her when she was out and about in town.

She enjoyed knitting, puzzles, reading, and going to the movies and plays. She looked forward to the annual girls trip to Wells Beach each October and traveling to Florida first with her sister each spring and with her “sisters” later in life.

She had many wonderful friendships in her life. Her special friend, Rita Gershman, has been her friend since kindergarten. She had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 50 years. Each and every one of those girls had truly become a sister to her.

Priscilla was predeceased by her husband, Raymond McIntyre and her sister Sheila Chalmers.

She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Motley and Thomas, of Shawmut, Sheila Poulin and Robert, of Waterville, Karen Derosby and partner James, of Waterville; her sister-in-law, Elaine Pantos, of Moultonboro, New Hampshire; her brother-in-law, Philip Chalmers, of Rockport, Massachusetts; and niece and nephews Larry, Steven, Donnie, and Laura; her grandchildren, Garrett, Amelia, and Marcus Derosby and Christopher Motley.

ROBERT M. WESCOTT

WINDSOR – Robert Michael Wescott, 82, of Windsor, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born in Portland on May 27, 1935.

He attended Erskine Academy in South China.

On June 4, 1960, he married Nanette Crane.

He worked for Mowlem ­Centriline Pipeline, Sanborn Motor Express, R.C. Moore Trucking and Hussey’s Store. He owned and operated a general store, Wescott’s Market, in Gardiner and also owned his own trucking company, Wescott Trucking, for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, William and Peter Wescott.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nanette (Crane) Wescott; his sons Michael Wescott, of Somerville, Richard Wescott and his partner Ivana Wilson, of Windsor; and his daughter Marcia (Wescott) Luszczki and her husband Carl, of Manchester; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

STEVEN GLOWA

SHELTON, CONNECTICUT – Steven Glowa, 61, of Shelton, Connecticut, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Steve was born in Bridgeport on May 18, 1956, the son of Margaret (Beaton) Glowa and the late John Glowa, and lived in Shelton most of his life. Steve was a former baseball standout at Shelton High School (‘74), Fair­field Uni­versity, and University of New Haven. He played Cape League baseball for Wareham (‘75) and Harwich (‘76, ‘77). When he wasn’t attending cheerleading competitions, he was watching or coaching baseball. In his spare time Steve enjoyed golfing, fishing, and cooking for his family and co-workers.

He worked for the Aquarion Water Company where he retired as Pipeline Coordinator after nearly 40 years of service.

He is the father of Jeffrey Glowa and Leanne Honious and her husband Zane. He also leaves two grandchildren, Zander and Bennett; a brother, John Glowa; nephews John, Joseph and Michael Glowa; a niece Andrea Glowa; several great-nieces and nephews, and his former wife Cheryl Rich.

He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Glowa.

ROBERT CHAMBERLAIN

WINSLOW – Robert “Stubby” Chamberlain, 88, passed away Monday, July 3, 2017. He was born November 27, 1928, the son of Raymond and Marie (Whittier) Chamberlain in Berlin, New Hampshire, but spent his early childhood in Ogunquit where he got his great love of the ocean and beach.

He moved to Waterville in 1940 and graduated from Waterville High School in 1947. He was married to the former Jacqueline Marcoux for 63 years and together they raised four children.

He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Midway from 1950 to 1954 as a parachute rigger. After being honorably discharged, he attended Thomas College, in Waterville, and graduated in 1957. He worked at C.F. HathawayShirt Co. in Waterville, for 25 years, John Deere and retired from the US Postal Service.

Robert was very involved in sports and was an outstanding second baseman during his high school years. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He spent many years coaching Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and officiated basketball, baseball and softball for over 20 years. He was a member of the Waterville Industrial Management Club, Waterville Jaycees, Elks BPOE #905 and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Since retirement, he and Jackie spent many winters in Florida where they enjoyed the ocean and beach as he had done as a child.

He is survived by his children, James, of Waterville, Thomas and wife Barbara, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Heidi McDonald and husband Michael, of Newport News, Virginia; grandchildren, Natalie Hill and Katee Chamberlain, Christopher and Adam Chamberlain, Ryan and Brooke Chamberlain and Hayley McDonald; greatgrandchildren, Robbie Sprouse and Davis Chamberlain.

He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Terri Hill; brothers, Richard and Raymond; and sister, Joyce Theriault.

RANDALL L. KNOX

AUGUSTA – Randall L. Knox, 54, died unexpectedly Monday, July 3, 2017, at his home in Augusta. Randy was born September 7, 1962, the son of Carl L. and Laurette (Grondin) Knox.

Randy graduated from Cony High School in 1981, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and the U.S. Army Reserve for 15 years.

Following the military, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for many years.

Randy was a co-founder of the Working Class Band where he was a drummer for several years. Randy is also well-known for his part-time DJ services in both Maine and Florida.

He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Augusta Eagles Club.

He was involved with several motorcycle clubs and loved riding his Harley. He helped with many fundraising events, including Make a Wish Foundation.

Randy wintered in Zephyrhills, Florida.

Randy is survived by two sons, Keenan and Collin; his parents, Carl and Laurette; his sister, Carla McPherson; his brother, David and wife Karel; his nephews, Tony, Chris, Logan and Kyle; his niece Shelby; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

KEVIN C. GOGGIN

SOUTH CHINA – Kevin Charles Goggin, 23, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at the Alfond Center for Health, Augusta. He was born in Waterville on March 15, 1994, the son of Jeffrey B. and Shirley A. (Williams) Goggin.

Kevin attended China and Vassalboro schools and was a graduate of Messalonskee High School, in Oakland. During Kevin’s short time here, he touched the lives of many and was loved by everyone. His infectious grin and giggles would light up the room and put a smile on anyone’s face. For years, Kevin continuously beat the odds despite his many handicaps and life challenges.

Some of Kevin’s favorite activities included walking, car rides, listening to music, watching Barney videos, and playing in the water. Kevin always enjoyed cuddles and foot massages as well and was not bashful on seeking willing participants. He had a passion for food, especially pasta, Parmesan cheese, and French fries. Kevin also had a sweet tooth and knew where everyone’s candy dish was.

Kevin was predeceased by grandparents Charles and Zeta Williams, Blaine Goggin, and Joan Goggin.

He is survived by his parents: Jeffrey B. and Shirley A. (Williams) Goggin; a brother, Jason B. Goggin and his girlfriend Kristen, of Durham; his sister, Kayla M. Goggin, of South China; his grandmother Rachel Goggin, of South China, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

JOHN G. NOEL

FAIRFIELD––John G. Noel, 86, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017. John was born in Waterville on November 26, 1930, to Onzime and Julliette (Gagne) Noel.

He served proudly in the United States Army from 1954-1956. He was stationed in Germany with “The Big Red One.” After being discharged from the Army, John returned home to Maine where he and his wife Eleanor became house parents at Good Will Hinckley School. He was also employed at Keyes Fibre Co. where he worked testing new products until his retirement. He also worked at the former Marden’s Shoe store, in Fairfield.

During retirement John enjoyed traveling the state with his wife Eleanor, visiting friends and seeing the sights.

John was a member of The Shawmut Chapel, the Elks Club, the American Legion and the Shriners.

He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor; and daughter Laurie.

He is survived by daughter Jane, son Scott and wife Carol, son James; grandson Seth Poulin and wife Jessica; granddaughter Melissa Buxton, grandson Nick Buxton and fiancée Jasmine, granddaughter Erica and boyfriend Dennis; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

RICHARD L. TALBOT

BENTON––Richard L. Talbot, 80, of Benton, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2017, at MaineGeneral Alfond Center for Health, Augusta. He was born in Waterville on October 18, 1936, the son of Louis and Mary (Rotte) Talbot.

Richard was employed by the Lipman Poultry Products, Winslow, for 23 years as payroll clerk and auditor. In 1981,he became office manager of Levine’s Department Store, in Waterville, and when the store closed in 1996, he worked as the bookkeeper for Pacy and ludy Levine.

Richard liked to do scroll working, fishing, hunting, gardening and camping trips. For over ten years, Richard and Jeanne would take bus trips to Florida, Branson, Myrtle Beach, and their trip to Hawaii.

Richard served as Grand Knight of the Waterville Knights of Columbus.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of Benton; two sons, John Richard Talbot and wife Beth, of Skowhegan. and James Anthony Talbot and wife Darlene, of Clinton; two sisters, Connie Thomas and Barbara Reynolds, both of South Carolina; five grandchildren, Amelia, Noah, Liam, Devon and Dustin; one great-grandson, Wyatt; and two great-granddaughters, Savanah and Miranda.

REGINALD L. FORTIN

WATERVILLE––Reginald L. “Reggie” Fortin, 70, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 27, 1947, the son of the late Leonel J. and Andrea (Talbot) Fortin.

Reggie was educated in Winslow schools and graduated from Winslow High School in 1965. Upon graduation Reggie drove a school bus for the town of Winslow and he became involved in the family business alongside his parents, known at the time as Fortin’s Hardware. In 1981, Reggie and his younger brother Mike took over the business and continued to run their parents’ legacy to this day…now known as Fortin’s Home Furnishings, in Winslow.

He was a lifetime member of the Waterville Elks Club, as well as a lifetime member of Le Club Calumet, in Augusta. He was also an active member of the Waterville Exchange Club faithfully attending weekly meetings for years.

He was predeceased by his parents; sister Louisette and husband Robert Roy, and his brother-in-law Ron LaPlante.

Reggie is survived by his companion of 42 years, Shirley K. Littlefield, of Benton; her four children, Jeff and Kathy B. Littlefield, of Winslow, Katrina and Rodney Corson, of Benton, Heidi and Daren White, of Phillips, and Harrison and Kym P. Littlefield, of Benton.

He is also survived by two sisters, Nancy and husband Jim Vanderveer, of Winslow, Jeanne LaPlante and her partner Chuck Perkins, of Waterville, brother Michael and wife Jill, of Wilson; Shirley’s five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

ROBERT W. LIBERTY

BENTON––Robert William Liberty, 20, of Benton, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, July 2, 2017. He was born on December 27, 1995, in Augusta to Kelly and Ron Liberty, also of Benton.

He was the kind of man who cared about others, and was always willing to lend a hand when anyone needed help; the kind of guy would stand up for others and stand to give his seat to a lady on a train.

The town of Madison provided a place where, as a boy, Rob could be found riding his bike all over town with frequent trips to the Irving for a milk shake, or to the Little Red Store for candy. He played baseball, football, and rode his ATV over every inch of the neighbor’s lawn. The time that he spent in Madison was very positive for Rob, due to the excellent families that helped shape him into the man that he became.

Robbie’s high school years were filled with activities at Lawrence High School, where he played football.

Employed by Ironworkers Union, Local i7, Rob had been previously employed at Cives Steel, in Augusta. During high school, Robbie spent hundreds of hours caring for the cows on the Flood Brothers Farm. Robbie was very proud to be a “Maine Guy.” He loved Carhart clothing, “Chips” boots, his straight piped F-150, anything powered by gasoline, Kayla, and his mom. He was rarely seen without his hat and at least some portion of his red beard.

Rob was predeceased by his grandfathers, Ron Liberty and Carl Cilley; and aunt, Gina Goding.

In addition to his parents, Rob is survived by his siblings; Reid Liberty and partner Jamie, and Brooke Liberty and partner Amanda; a niece, Cassidy Liberty; and grandparents, Bill and Diane Vasseur, Trena Cilley, and Rose Marie Liberty; uncles, aunts, and cousins; his better half, Kayla Paradis, her parents Jim and Sandy, and her brother Kyle and his partner Sarah.

JAMIE R. LOVETT, 29, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, following a long battle with depression and bipolar illness. Locally, she is survived by her father, Raymond C. Lovett, and mother Deanna Works and husband Dwayne, of Oakland, and a sister, Sadie Works, of Oakland.

STELLA M. POIRIER, 96, of Oakland, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Lakewood Continuing Care, in Waterville. ROSEMARY ANTHONY, 65, of New Port Richey, Florida, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017, following a short illness. Locally, she is survived by brothers Fern Bourque, of Winslow, and Steve Bourque, of Whitefield.

LESTER B DAVIS

Lester B Davis, 89, of Palermo, died on Monday, May 29, 2017, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta. He was born in Washington, D.C., on April 6, 1928, the son of Lester and Neva Davis.

Lester served in the U.S. Army. He married the former Dorothy Eleanor Deyoe on June 5, 1949.

Lester’s work history included: Treasurer for the City of College Park, Maryland; Metropolitan Life Insurance, in Wilton, and Augusta; and Lester B Davis Tax and Business Services, in Palermo.

Lester served as a volunteer with the Boys Club in College Park and as a Boy Scout leader for Troop #222, in Palermo. He was the announcer for the wrestling and basketball teams at Erskine Academy, in South China, for 30 years. He was recently honored for this accomplishment. Lester had a particular fondness for the staff and students at Erskine Academy. He was also interested in researching family genealogy.

In October 2016, he traveled to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight for veterans. It was a very memorable experience for him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor.

He is survived by his six children: Bonnie Davis; Cheryl Jones and husband David, Glen Davis and partner Pat Belanger, Kathy Cheeseman and husband David, Sandra Randall and fiancé Sam Grenier, and James Davis and wife Karen; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

FREDERICK M. STEEVES

VASSALBORO – Frederick “Fred” Maynard Steeves, 79, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017, at the Maine Veteran’s Hospice Center, in Augusta. He was born May 30, 1938, in Rockland, the son of Charles Steven Steeves and Edna (Lathrop) Steeves.

He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the US Air Force until his honorable discharge. He also trained with the Marine Corps.

On March 14, 1986, he married the former Nancy Hastings, in Seward, Alaska. In his younger days, he worked for a fire truck production company and in the chicken industry. He also was a fisherman in New Bedford. After moving to Seward, Alaska, in 1965, he owned his own marine welding business. He was also a fisherman, trapper, bear guide, and bus driver.

Fred was a member of the Centerpoint Community Church, Lions International, the American Legion, and Pioneers of Alaska. He enjoyed hunting, photography, flower gardening, and gold panning.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy (Hastings) Steeves, of Vassalboro; children, Alan Steeves, Bobby Raynes, Mark Steeves and wife Jeanmarie, Trilby Post, Noreen Skillman and husband Dan, Jay Sturm, and Joe Sturm; three sisters, Ruth Kyte , Pricilla Lundevahl, and Alaide Hopper and husband James; two brothers, Wayne Steeves and wife Carla, and Leslie Steeves; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a grandchild, several sisters, brothers, nephews, and nieces.

FAIRFIELD – Patricia A. Cole, 70, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. She was born September 1, 1946, in Fairfield, the daughter of William and Ethelyn B. (Short) Fagan.

On June 12, 1982, she married Gerald A. Cole, in Fairfield. She owned and operated Center General Store, in Fairfield Center, for 13 years. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, crocheting, word puzzles, and spending time with family.

Patricia is survived by her son, Ken Cutler and companion Michelle Holmes, of Fairfield; daughter, Sue Sirois and husband Jason, of Sidney; grandchildren, Sydnee Cutler, of Benton, Karlee Cutler, of Benton, Jake Cutler and companion Jen Curtis, of Waterville, Christopher Longley, of Sidney, Lindsey Sirois, of Sidney, Kaitlyn Longley and companion Dylan Tillson, of Sidney; great-grandchildren, Kaedon, Madi, William, and Lillian.

She was predeceased by her husband Gerald Cole in 2012.

SARAH A. CUNNINGHAM

WINDSOR–Sarah Ann Cunningham, 69, of Choate Road, passed away on Thursday June 22, 2017, following her courageous battle from cancer. She was born in the home of her parent’s doctor, in Vassalboro, the daughter of Floyd and Clara Randall Brann.

She attended Windsor schools graduating from Erskine Academy, in South China, class of 1965.

She waitressed for a while for Glendon Casey. Sarah was a stay home mom raising her own children as well as several other children from Windsor. She worked as an Ed Tech at the Windsor Elementary School for several years.

Sarah also worked for the Town of Windsor for 16-1/2 years where she received her certification for town clerk. She would be the first town clerk in Windsor to be certified and she is also the only town clerk to receive her lifetime certification. In 2004 Sarah received the Rookie of the Year Award from the Maine Town and City Clerks Association.

Following her retirement, Sarah and her husband became members of the Windsor Historical Society as well the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club.

Sarah and her husband were lifetime members of the North Windsor Baptist Church where she served as a Deacon and sang in the church choir. She also served as church treasurer and custodian at the church for many years.

She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and community member who will be greatly missed. She touched everyone in a special way with her contagious smile.

She was predeceased by her brother Mickey Randell.

Sarah leaves her husband of 51 years, Roger Cunningham, of Windsor; two sons, Kevin Cunningham and his wife Tracy, of South China, and Jason Cunningham and wife Lin, of Azusa, California; a daughter, Amanda Roddy and husband Tom, of Palermo; a sister, Wendy Brann, of Augusta. Sarah is also survived by four grandchildren.

THEODORE BRADSTREET

ALBION––Theodore Bradstreet, 70, known to his friends as Ted, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He was born on October 3, 1946, in Augusta, to Mary (Palmer) and Kenneth Bradstreet.

Ted graduated from Gardiner High School in 1964. He met his wife of over 48 years, Ruth (Dodge), in the summer of 1967. Ted attended college for many years acquiring a number of degrees. He went on to work in a variety of fields, and remained a passionate researcher and writer into his retirement years. His last article will appear in the Historical Breechloading Smallarms Association Journal at the end of the year.

Ted was predeceased by his parents; and one younger brother.

He is survived by his wife; their children Rebecca Bradstreet and Jonathan Bradstreet and his wife Sherry; sister Myra Rosenbaum; brother Robert; and a number of nieces and nephews.

NATHAN DESJARDINS

ALBION––Nathan Michael Desjardins, 20, of Albion, died on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Central Maine Medical Center, in Lewiston, as a result of injuries sustained in a search and rescue operation while working for the Fryeburg Police Department, who were assisting the Maine Warden Service. Nate was born on June 12, 1996, in Waterville, the second son of Nicole (Proulx) Desjardins and Brian Desjardins.

Nate was educated in local schools, enjoyed soccer and graduated with academic honors from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, class of 2014. During his sophomore year in college, he pursued his dream of studying abroad, and was fortunate enough to spend a semester in Seville, Spain, where he fell in love with the people and the culture, and where he also continued to learn how to play the violin, which he continued to teach himself when he returned to Maine.

Nate enjoyed many styles of music, with country being his favorite, and he was ecstatic that he was able to recently attend his favorite country music artist’s (Josh Turner) concert with one of his best friends. He pursued employment opportunities which would enhance his passion for learning and serving the public through roles as an EMT and reserve police officer, while using the money earned to pay for his college education.

He had completed his third year at the University of New England, School of Nursing, in Biddeford, and had a clear vision of using his education to better his contribution to police departments, EMT service or any agency called upon to assist others in time of need. Nate always spoke highly of his friends at UNE, the excellent caliber of his professors, and continued to thrive and excel academically.

Nate enjoyed the outdoors, be it skiing, fishing or kayaking. His hike up Mount Katahdin gave him a love of hiking.

He was a focused individual who wanted to make a difference in this world by contributing whatever he could, wherever he could, whenever he could. Even in death he gave of himself as an organ donor so others could enjoy life a little better.

Nate is survived by his parents; his brother Ross Desjardins; his grandmother Susan Proulx; as well as a very large extended family and circle of friends.

AVA J. MARABLE

WINDSOR––Ava Jenell Marable passed away on Friday, June 9, 2017. Ava was born nearly 15 weeks early at Maine Medical Center in Portland, on March 26, 2017, one minute after her twin sister Eden, and weighed 1 pound 11 ounces, the daughter of Aaron and Rachelle Marable.

Ava was a fighter, she fought hard her entire time here on earth.

Ava was predeceased by her aunt Sentree; great-grandmothers Mammie and Nannie; and great-grandfathers Waldo and Bill.

WINDSOR––Lloyd Grand Meader, 82, of Windsor, died Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta following a brief illness. He was born in Vienna, on June 15, 1934, the son of Leslie Meader and Mildred (Merrick) Meader.

Mr. Meader served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Lapointe Lumber Co., in Augusta, for 20 years.

He always had a big smile and a great sense of humor. He had a very charismatic personality, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

His wife, Glaydies F. Meader, predeceased him. They were married December 3, 1956.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Gould and husband Thomas, of Pittston, and Stacey Hoyt and husband David, of Arizona; two brothers, Charles Meader, of Vienna, and William Meader, of South China; three sisters, Vivian Hughes, of California, Virginia Carter, of Wilton, and Jerlean Giles, of Georgia; three half-brothers, Floyd Ladd, of Phillips, Boyd Ladd, of Farmington, and Russell Meader, of Washington State; one half-sister Linda Round, of Enfield; three grandchildren, Tonya, Erica and Grant; one great-grandson Briton; and several nieces and nephews.

FAIRFIELD – Lori A. Pelletier, 51, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017. She was born February 18, 1966, in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Walter Pelletier and Judy (Hawes) Pelletier.

The family moved back to Maine when Lori was young.

Although she enjoyed staying home her house was always open to friends and especially to someone who needed a place to stay. She had a special love for her dog Bently and he was loved by all who entered her home. She enjoyed bowling in her younger years and was very proud of the trophies she won. She was blessed with a good heart and was happily looking forward to the birth of her first granddaughter in a few months.

Lori is survived by her father and step-mother, Walter and Beverly Pelletier, of Canaan; her son Walter Bell and his fiancée Ashley Marie Cyr, of Millinocket; her sister Lynne Pelletier and her fiance Dan Shaw, of Windham; her step-brother Tim Patnaude and his wife Lisa, of Sabattus; her step-sister Karen Pullen and her fiance Brandon Norton, of Fairfield,; two nephews Thomas Pelletier II, of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Michael Hopkins, of Stamford, Connecticut.

NORMAN W. MATHIEU

WINSLOW––Norman W. Mathieu, 89, passed away in Scarborough on Sunday, June 11, 2017, from complications following a stroke. Norman was born in Winslow on January 8, 1928, the son of Joseph and Cecile (Roy) Mathieu.

He was a graduate of Winslow High School and spent two years in the United States Coast Guard. On July 8, 1950, Norman married the former Theresa J.
Poulin, of Winslow, with whom he had four children and spent 63 years.

Through his career Norman was superintendent of Hoerner Waldorf Corporation, in Waterville, and also an employee of Scott Paper Company, in Winslow,
Maine Central Railroad, in Waterville, and Winslow Junior High School. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, gardening, music, and watching the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Canadiens.

He was a devout Catholic, a life-long communicant and frequent cantor at St. John Church, in Winslow, which later became part of Corpus Christi Parish.

A great musician since the age of ten, Norman will be fondly remembered as a spiritually uplifting entertainer at the Muskie Center, in Waterville, along with area nursing homes and many private gatherings. His love of music lives on in his children and grandchildren and many extended family members.

From 2010 to 2013 Norman never left his beloved wife Theresa’s side and was her full-time care-giver until she passed away on March 13, 2013.

He is survived by daughters Barbara Mathieu, of Oakland, and Janet Bird, of Scarborough; sons William Mathieu, of Winslow, and Paul Mathieu and wife Miriam Englund, of Freedom, New Hampshire; grandchildren Jenny Michaud, of Portland, Joshua Michaud and partner Misty Doyon, of Oakland, Philip and Nathanael Mathieu, of Freedom, New Hampshire, Christopher Mathieu, of Winslow, and Danielle Zapata, of Waterville; great-grandchildren Bryce and Jayceon Mathieu, and Chace Doyon; sisters Arlene Rulman, of Westbrook, and Ann Roy, of Rockland; brother Anthony Mathieu, of Winslow; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

REAL B. TREPANIER

WINSLOW––Real B. Trepanier, 73, died Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta, following a prolonged illness. He was born in Lac Megantic, Canada, on November 7, 1943, the son of Victor and Maria (Fredette) Trepanier.

Real was a Waterville High School graduate and a u.S. Army veteran serving in both Germany and Vietnam. After his military service, he entered the work force at Fraser Paper Mill, in Madawaska, for 10 years, then he returned to Winslow where he was employed for 20 years for Scott Paper Co. as a treatment plant operator.

Real was the historian for 10 years for the Bourque-Lanigan Post #5 American Legion, in Waterville. He was also a talented violin player and bird carver, ham radio operator and growing bonsai plants.

Real was predeceased by his siblings, Gaeton, Marielle, Richard , Paul and Carmen Trepanier.

WINSLOW––Joan Anita (Masse) Barrows, 85, of Winslow, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017. She was born in Winslow, May 9, 1931, to Joseph Cyrille Masse and Adele (Laliberte) Masse.
Joan was the head cheerleader at Winslow High. After high school, she met and instantly fell in love with Paul Barrows, who happened to be the star basketball player from rival high school Waterville High. They were married for 18 years until his passing in 1971. Together they had three daughters, Deborah Culpovich, Jody Panarelli and Kelly Barrows-Botero.

Joan, a resident of Maine her whole life, also enjoyed spending time with her family all over New England, often visiting her brother Arthur Masse in Connecticut, or taking in a Red Sox game with the grandkids in Boston. She also made many trips to the West Coast where she would visit her sister, Dolores “Lou” Norton, or spend Christmases in the mountains of Park City, Utah, with her family, and her long time companion, Ron Webber.

Joan had nine grandchildren: Alexandra Juarez-Aleksieienko, Amanda Champagne-Meadows, Abby Champagne, Chris Panarelli, Emilio Botero, Samuel Botero, Nico Panarelli, Megan Panarelli, and Daphne Botero.

ALBION––Shawn Michael Fennell, 46, passed away in Vista, California, on Friday, May 19, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Waterville on November 22, 1970, the son of Wayne and Sandy Fennell, but moved to Albion shortly after.

He attended Albion Elementary, where he played many sports, but really excelled at football where later he was an outstanding defensive tackle for the Lawrence Bulldogs, in Fairfield, all through high school. His lifelong dream was to be a Marine, so he left for boot camp at Parris Island in July 1989. His duty stations included: New River, North Carolina, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Okinawa, Japan, Quantico, Virginia, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Vienna, Austria, Vladivostok, Russia, Fort Leonard Wood for a second time, Camp Pendleton, California, and Kandahar, Afghanistan.
During his military service, Shawn was in the following military occupations specialties: motor transport, Marine Embassy Guard and Military Police.

After 22 years and attaining the rank of gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corp. it was time to retire. Shawn had a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, but decided to pursue another degree in respiratory therapy. He loved living in Vista, California, where he had many friends and was passionate about working out and being healthy. Shawn loved his daughter, Sydney, very much and was able to spend time with her in December of last year. His life was filled with many adventures all over the world and influenced many other people that he met.

Surviving Shawn are his parents, Wayne and Sandy Fennell; daughter Sydney Fennell; brothers, Chad and Derek; sister-in-law, Monica; nephews Conner, Nicholas, Evan and Kamren; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

RUTH F. COTE

WATERVILLE––Ruth Cuthbertson Ferland Cote, 90, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center. Ruth was born in Winslow on April 17, 1927, the only child of James Nelson Cuthbertson and Ruth Allen Cuthbertson.

Ruth graduated from Winslow High School, class of 1944, and was involved in their scholarship program. She worked as a medical secretary for many years until her retirement from Kennebec Valley Mental Health Center.

Ruth had a passion for reading and always had many books within reach. She was an avid knitter and crocheter, and her children and grandchildren were blessed to have received her beautiful afghans. Ruth greatly enjoyed the Belfast camp retreat which was held yearly by Moonlight Bay at Lakewood.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Albert “Pete” Ferland; and two grandsons, Joshua Moss and Nathan Davis.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Cote; children: Elizabeth Ferland, Virginia Allen (James), Sarah Cunningham (Lloyd), Peter Ferland (Beth), and Paul Ferland (Sherry); her stepchildren: Thomas Cote, Angela Davis, Emily McDonald (Charles), and Beth Ferland (Peter); 19 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.

DONALD F. MASSEY

WINSLOW––Donald Francis Massey, 85, of Winslow, passed away at Oak Grove Nursing Home, on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Donald was born on February 16, 1932, in Waterville, the youngest child of Louis and Mary Anne (Thibodeau) Massey.

Don graduated froom Waterville High School in 1951, where he excelled as an athlete in football, basketball and baseball. After graduating high school, Don enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1952 to 1956 and then became a Korean War veteran.

On September 21, 1957, Don married the former Patricia Gagne. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Don worked at Houle’s Plumbing and Heating, in Waterville, where he began his career. He then worked at Keyes Fibre mill in Waterville, from where he retired in 1991.

During his younger years as a father, Don was dedicated to spending as much time as possible with his family. He was an excellent little league coach as well as an umpire. He also spent each winter flooding the neighborhood basketball court so neighborhood children could ice skate. Don also enjoyed spending time and creating memories with his family at their camp on Moosehead Lake.

Once retired, Don spent a lot of his time helping out family and friends, as he was always doing things for others. He helped raise his grandchildren. He could always be found at his brother’s establishment, Steve’s Restaurant, or sitting out in front of his garage, waving to each person who went by. He became a self-taught carpenter in his retirement, crafting beautiful pieces of furniture for both family and friends.

Don was predeceased by his parents; sons Bruce and Michael Massey; brothers Nelson, Joseph, Edward “Pee Wee”, Alfred, George and Steve; sisters Irene Brown and Rita Wetzler; half-sister Margaret Stewart; half-brothers John and Leo Gaudet; and son-in-law Todd Labbe.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia; daughter Brenda Massey-Labbe; son Todd Massey and wife Cheryl; grandchildren Brittney Massey-Labbe, Kurt Massey, Brian Massey and Kayla Massey; sister-in-law Bernadette Massey; and several nieces and nephews.

ROBERT H. REED

FAIRFIELD CENTER––Robert H. Reed, 91, died Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the U.S. VA Medical Center at Togus. He was born in Gardiner on May 23, 1926, the son of Harold and Ethlyn (Morrill) Reed.

Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, in Oakland; worked at Togus; and retired from the VA  Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Robert lived many years in Tennessee. He was a member of the Masons for over 30 years.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty in 2014; two sisters, Leila Luce and Maxine Gallagher; and two brothers, Edmund and Tom Reed.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Noel, of Sidney; a sister, Laura Stevens, of Oakland; and several nieces and nephews.

R. ALLAN WENZEL

WEEKS MILLS––R. Allan “Al” Wenzel, 74, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the Alfond Center for Health, in Augusta, following a long illness. He was born in Friant, California, on March 6, 1943, a son of the late William L. and Ella B. (Hamann) Wenzel.

Mr. Wenzel was a US Navy veteran and was a 50-year member of the American Legion and served as post commander on both coasts.

He had been employed by Digital Equipment Corp. and Lohman Animal Health for many years.

Al would take vacation time every year in order to work the Chicken Bar-B-Q at the Windsor Fair, which he did for many years. He also served as a volunteer fireman for many years at the Weeks Mills fire department.

Mr. Wenzel was predeceased by three brothers, Wilber, Lauren and Paul Wenzel and three sisters, Letha Jenks, Bernice Chancellor and Caryl Turl.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda L. (Haskell) Wenzel, of China; two sons, Timothy A. Wenzel, of Madera, California and Adam L.Wenzel and wife Linda, of Clovis, California; a daughter, Yvonne J. Meek and husband Loren, of Exeter, California; three brothers, Wayne Wenzel and wife Jean, of Clovis, California, Roy Wenzel and wife Karen, of Marysville, Washington and James Wenzel and wife Linda, of Camarillo, California; two sisters, Louise Oppelt, of Brookings, South Dakota, and Ila Alford, of Placentia, California; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

BRENDA J. FOSTER

BENTON – Brenda Jane (Holt) Foster, 68, of Benton, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017, from complication related to cancer. She was born November 5, 1948, in Waterville, to Sumner and Josie Holt.

She is survived by her longtime love of her life, Robert (Bobby) Bergeron; sons, Robin Foster and his wife Jocelyn Young, Eric Foster and his wife Lynda and her daughter Angie Foster; as well as three grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor and Austin Foster.

Brenda was extremely proud of her dad’s military service and his participation in World War II in the South Pacific, where he was injured by gunfire. She was deeply patriotic and rarely seen without her American flag pin on her shirt.

Brenda worked at Klearview Manor, in Fairfield, for nearly 40 years in the laundry before recently retiring. She worked tirelessly with great pride to ensure all the residents looked their best. Everyone knew when Brenda was on lunch break when the smell of her burned toast she loved so much permeated Klearview’s hallways.

Brenda loved reading, keeping track of the weather, thunderstorms, and tending her beautiful flower gardens. She loved every chance she could get to go to the beach, ocean, mountains, or “up north.”

She enjoyed jamming to her favorite band, U2; and shared two wonderful trips with her daughter to see U2 perform live.

She got great pleasure in the wild songbirds, hummingbirds, crows, squirrels, deer, woodchucks and raccoon families who frequented her well-stocked feeders for years. She loved all her kitties that came in and out of her life.

She especially enjoyed her many adventures through the years all over Maine and beyond with her daughter Angie.

SHARON PLATO

CHINA – Sharon Plato, 61, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017, following a three-year battle with cancer. Sharon was born on May 22, 1956, in Augusta, the third child of Alton and Eleanor Williams.

She was predeceased by her father and a younger brother, Clinton Williams.

Sharon is survived by her mother, her husband and soul mate of over 43 years, Eric ‘Rick’ Plato, of South China; siblings Wesley Williams and his wife Chris, of Bucksport, Gail St. Hilaire, of Bradenton, Florida, Dale Williams and his wife Lisa, of Bowdoin, and Jeremy Williams and his wife Lydia, of Readfield; her best friend of 46 years, Sharon Dunn, of Readfield; many nieces and nephews.

DONALD B. SHORES SR.

OAKLAND ­– Donald B. Shores, Sr., a resident of Oakland and Fairfield Center, died on Monday, May 29, 2017, at Maine General Medical Center, in Augusta, following weeks of battling cancer and treatment complications. He was born on September 13, 1940, in Albion, the son of the late Erlon N. Sr. and Gladys (Brawn) Shores, and graduated from Besse High School in 1960.

Donald co-owned and operated with his sons, Shores Dairy Farm, from 1982 until retiring in April 2016. He loved his family, cows and cats. He cared for his friends and was always helping a stranger.

He was not a man of many words, saying he loved or cared about you, but he showed you through phone calls, giving unexpected gifts, remembering all his children and grandchildren on their birthdays and Christmas. He would drop off candy, flowers or gifts to those he wanted to show his appreciation. He kept his promises and was a man who made a difference in the lives he left behind.

He had fond memories and stories of his years working for Woolworth Estate, in Monmouth, for 12 years as herdsman and in their gardens/greenhouse until 1972. He moved his family to Fairfield to work for Tozier Farm, before purchasing his own dairy farm. He loved driving old beat-up looking white pick-ups. Bail-a twine and duct tape were his tools of choice. His truck cab was always full of his possessions and bags of cat food ­– this did not stop him from picking up a hitchhiker, and only his great-grandchildren liked to ride with him.

He is survived by his children, Jolene McPhetres, of Sangerville; Richard and Cheryl Shores, of Canaan, and their children Katie and Tyler; Deanna and David Proulx, of Oakland, and their children David E. and Brittany, and their children, Bailey and Brooklynn; and David T. and Betsy, of Oakland, and their children Dallas and Samantha; the mother of his children, and business partner, Judy Shores; Linda Daigle, of Fairfield Center, and her children Lisa, Larrisa, Laura, Larry and their families; brothers, Manley Shores, Amasa and Danny, all of Albion; Allen, of Winslow; and Erlon Jr., of Waterville; sisters, Louise Bellows, and Gloria and Ron Gregory, all of Winslow; sister-in-law, Lois Shores, of Albion; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
