Eldon McLean presented with Boston Post Cane

Eldon McLean

Eldon McLean, 93, was honored as the oldest resident of North Anson by the presentation of the ceremonial Boston Post Cane by Anson Historical Society, at the Anson Town Office, on February 9, 2023. President Sharon Mellows, Vice President Charlotte Withee, Chairman Ralph Withee and Anson Administrator Tammy Murray and Michell Quint, a member of the society, and Eldon’s wife Laurie, were present.

Eldon was born June 9, 1929, in North Anson, to Kenneth and Alberta McLean. He attended Mark Emery and North Anson Academy. Eldon served in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He worked at Wings Mill, on construction and later was manager of Sampson’s, in Rockland, and later manager of Hannaford, in Madison. Eldon is a member of the Lions Club and the Lexington Highland Historical Society and past member of the North Anson Grange, Mason’s, and Lexington Highland Snowmobile Club.

Eldon married Laurie Howes and they had three children, Wendy, Larry, and Michael. They have five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Eldon’s mother, Alberta, was presented the Boston Cane in 2001 at the age of 96.

Lindsay Hamilton is Carrabec’s Principal’s Award winner

Lindsay Hamilton, daughter of Matthew and Marsha, of Clinton, a senior at Carrabec High School, in North Anson, has been selected to receive the 2023 Principal’s Award, according to Principal Peter Campbell. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement, citizenship and leadership.

According to Campbell, Ms. Hamilton has distinguished herself in the classroom, on the basketball court, and as a leader in the school. She has a positive attitude, is hard-working, kind, and humble, all of which will ensure her future success.

Academically, Lindsay has challenged herself throughout her high school years. Her hard work and perseverance have made her one of the top students of the Class of 2023. Her eagerness and enthusiasm makes her a leader and a role model in our school.

Lindsay drives 45 minutes from Clinton every day to be part of the school community. Lindsay shines strong at Carrabec as she applies enthusiasm and passion into everything she does. Strong and focused, Lindsay has played an important role on Carrabec’s teams. She is a supportive team player, she holds and shows respect for all her teammates and coaches.

Ms. Hamilton not only thrives in the sports worlds, but is also an important member of Carrabec’s math team. Lindsay is also a member of the National Honor Society and was chosen as Student of the Month for her graduating class.

For all of these reasons, Mr. Campbell is proud to announce that Lindsay Hamilton is the Carrabec High School MPA Award recipient for 2023. Lindsay will attend an awards luncheon on April 1, 2023, where she will receive her award and be eligible to be selected for one of ten scholarships.

Anson’s oldest living resident is Boston Post Cane recipient

Janet Faye Hilton Fletcher, 97, is Anson’s oldest living citizen.

Janet Faye Hilton Fletcher, 97, was honored as the oldest resident of Anson by the presentation of the ceremonial Boston Post Cane, by Anson Historical Society, at her home in Anson. President Sharon Mellows, Vice President Charlotte Withee, Chairman Ralph Withee and Anson Administrator Tammy Murray were present.

Janet Fletcher was born July 19, 1925, on Hilton Hill Road, in Anson, and resided in Anson most of her life. She attended elementary school at Garrett Schenck and graduated from Madison High School in 1943, at the age of 17.

She married Hurley Fletcher on November 27, 1943. They lived on Fletcher Road in Anson, moved to the Airport Road, in Norridgewock, for three years but moved back to West Mills Road, in Anson. She currently lives with her son David and his wife Mary Fletcher, on Hilton Hill Road, Anson.

Janet and Hurley had nine children, Gary Fletcher, Diane Fletcher Oliver, Sandra Fletcher Weese, Betty Fletcher Burpee, Linda Fletcher Sargent, Dennis Fletcher, Joan Fletcher, David Fletcher, Larry Fletcher. She has 24 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Emma Baker is the daughter of Dean and Melissa Baker, of Embden. Emma will be attending Suny Plattsburgh University in New York for computer science.

Julia Baker is the daughter of Eric and Kelly Baker, of Embden. Julia will be attending Kennebec Valley Community College for nursing/general studies.

Abigayle Ballard is the daughter of Kevin Ballard, of Wiscasset, and Terry and Adam Soosman, of Embden. Abigayle will be attending Kennebec Valley Community College for business/barketing.

Cheyenne Cahill – Valedictorian, is the daughter of Michael and Kimberly Cahill, of Embden. Cheyenne will be attending the University of New England majoring in applied exercise science.

Tyler Edwards is the son of Heather Wahler, of Embden. Tyler will be attending the University of Maine for new media.

Shyanne Holmes – Salutatorian, is the daughter of William and Jennifer Holmes, of North Anson. Shyanne will be attending Thomas College majoring in business.

Courtney Rollins is the daughter of Duayne and Jenney Rollins, of Solon. Courtney will be continuing in the work force.

Trinity Slate is the child of Stacey Slate, of North Anson. Trinity will be attending the University of Maine at Farmington for International and global studies.

Brandon Smith is the son of Kenneth and Rebecca Smith, of Anson. Brandon will be attending Thomas College for their public accounting program.

Garrett Wilson is the son of Jonathan and Susan Wilson, of Embden. Garrett will be attending a four-year college.

Timothy Richards, Principal, has announced honor parts for the Class of 2022 at Carrabec High School.

Cheyenne Cahill, Carrabec’s Valedictorian, is a student who is a role model in our school. With a grade point average of 101.32, she has completed two advanced placement classes, eight honors classes and six dual enrollment classes, as well as, five advanced math classes. Cheyenne is not only a great student and math team leader, she also applies her strengths to the sports world as well, excelling in basketball, track and tennis. Cheyenne has been a part of the Willpower team since seventh grade. Cheyenne will be attending the University of New England, in Biddeford, majoring in Applied Exercise Science. Cheyenne is the daughter of Michael and Kimberly Cahill, of Embden.

Shyanne Holmes, Carrabec’s Salutatorian, is a bright and successful student. Shyanne has a grade point average of 99.73, completing seven honors classes, two advanced placement classes, seven dual enrollment classes, as well as, two advanced math classes. Shyanne has been part of the Willpower team since seventh grade as well, shines in softball, and as a class leader. She will be an asset to any organization of which she chooses to be part. Shyanne will be attending Thomas College, in Waterville, majoring in business. Shyanne is the daughter of William and Jennifer Holmes, of North Anson.

Welch receives MPA principal’s award at Carrabec High School

Brooke Welch, daughter of Dereck and Aaron Welch of North Anson, a senior at Carrabec High School, has been selected to receive the 2022 Principal’s Award, according to Prin­cipal Timothy Richards. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement, citizenship and leadership.

According to Richards, Ms. Welch has distinguished herself as a leader for her class, a role model for her peers, and an athlete on the court and on the field. She always has a smile on her face and has a positive attitude. Brooke is hard-working, kind, and humble, all of which will ensure her future success. She is also very involved in her community, volunteering for many events, always willing to lend a hand.

Strong and focused, Brooke has not only thrived in the sports world, but has taken honors courses, as well as, AP and Dual Enrollment classes, and was March 2022 Student of the Month.

For all of these reasons, Richards is proud to announce that Brooke Welch is the Carrabec High School MPA Award recipient for 2022. Brooke can attend a LIVE Virtual Event on April 1, 2022, where she will be eligible to be selected for one of ten scholarships.
