Along the way she picked up her loving husband, Jeffrey Frankel. They married on May 24, 1974, and embarked on the great adventure of their lives when they re-located to Maine for Carol to start her medical residency at Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency, in Augusta. Upon completion of the residency in 1982, Carol began her practice at Sheepscot Valley Health Center, in Coopers Mills.

Her commitment to and compassion for her patients was legendary. And delivering babies was the best part of the job.

She was a vegetarian for decades, and loved coordinating food orders for the Jefferson Food Co-op and receiving her weekly bag of CSA produce.

In addition to her work at HealthReach, Carol served as medical director of the Maine Community Accountable Care Organization and was a medical consultant for Social Security Disability Services.

Carol gave of herself to many volunteer and non-profit organizations. These included many medical missions to the Dominican Republic with the University of Southern Maine nursing program, harvest season health clinics with the Maine Migrant Health Program, the Maine Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Maine Labor Group on Health, the Windsor School Board, 30 years’ membership on the Maine Pesticides Control Board, plus many others.

Carol leaves behind her husband, Jeff. He will forever remember the smile in her voice, the hoarfrost in her hair, and the boundless love and devotion she showered on him during their years together.

Carol is also survived by her mother, Anne Scerbak, of Harwich, Massachusetts; son Sam Frankel, of Portland; daughter Hannah Frankel and fiancé Ryan Nill, of Austin, Texas; sister Nancy Eckert, her husband Jay Benkovich and nephew Jonathan Benkovich, of Rutherford, New Jersey; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Deborah and Armando Mantilla, nephew Aaron and niece Sarah, of Fair Lawn, New Jersey; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marsha Frankel and Bill Natali, step-niece Crystal Taylor and children Kaitlyn Miller and Isabel Disla of Orlando, Florida.

NAJLA (NAWFEL) JOSEPH

FAIRFIELD––Najla (Nawfel) Joseph, 91, died Thursday, October 13, 2016. Najla was born April 4, 1925.

She was a star high school basketball player. In a time when girls were only allowed to play half-court ball, on a team led by a coach who wasn’t sure if “Lebanese girls” should share the floor with “regular” girls, this was no small endeavor.

Najla’s warm demeanor, her disarming personality, and her stubborn nature were just the right mix to allow her to make the team, and ultimately become its star player; and this was just the beginning of an exemplary life.

Najla loved to ride her baby-blue bike all around town. And when she was a bit older, loved driving her baby-blue Volkswagen Beetle. Najla was a force; through her entire life she lit up a room with her smile and made all those around her feel at ease.

In 1946, she married Harold Joseph. Together they raised three daughters, Paula, Sharon and Tenley, and ran a wonderfully successful store in Fairfield, Joseph’s Clothing and Sporting Goods. Naj always made sure customers received the warmest welcome and fairest deal, all while ensuring the bills were paid and creditors happy.

Najla learned, from her mother, the art of making the deeply satisfying Lebanese food.

She was predeceased by her parents Sam and Adma (Daghir) Nawfel; sisters, Laura and Amera Nawfel and Zanie Hikel.

In addition to her daughters, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters, Najla is survived by her brother, Dr. Michael Nawfel and wife Dolores, as well as soons-in-law, Kris Baxter and Jon Eustis.

An online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at: www.lawrybrothers.com.

ALBERTA N. CRAIGBunny started her education at Windsor Grammar School and continued on with many long walks to Erskine Academy with her siblings to graduate in the class of 1936. She was last surviving member of her class.

Nearing her 100th birthday, the last of her family of eight, she was predeceased by her first-born at birth, Sandra Lee in 1941; her parents, sisters Virginia Nowland (1971); Phyllis Cunningham (2008); sisters-in-law Violet Nowland (2008) and Barbara Nowland (2012); brothers, Dean Nowland (1983); C. In our case, it took the Nowland family to provide care in her place, thus enabling her to better herself for her daughter. She went to work at Keene’s Grocery Store (later known as Bernard’s Foodland) in order to support the two of them and go on to college to get a more profitable job. She was soon able to begin working at Depositors Trust Bank at several different branches in Augusta, continuing on many years after it became Key Bank.

Retiring in the late 70s after a fall on the ice while walking to work, breaking vertebrae in her back, making it difficult for her to continue, she decided to retire. It was a hard decision as she enjoyed her co-workers and many customers, a special one being Bill Forbes from Augusta Police Department, friends to this day.

After recovering with her daughter and family, she returned home to help her brothers care for their aging mom. She also enjoyed being near her daughters family including her grandchildren. Soon, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren came to know her as Nana or great-nana.

Survivors include her daughter, Gloria E. Strout and her husband, Arthur, of South China; her five grandchildren: Dennis Strout and wife, Susan; Lenwood Strout and wife, Tammy; Kenneth Strout, Sr. and wife, Tina; Kevin Strout and wife, Cindy and Keri Strout. LINDA M. MACKENZIE

VASSALBORO––Linda Mae (Crosby) Mackenzie, 70, following a courageous ten-year fight with ovarian cancer, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 2, 2016, in her home. She was born on July 28, 1946, the second of three daughters born to the late Albert and Louise (White) Crosby.page4pict1

Linda was a beautiful, selfless woman with an infectious personality and a faithful servant’s heart, always caring and doing for others. She loved cooking, continuing to cook and serve at church suppers until she could no longer stand, tending to her many flower gardens, watching her birds, attending her favorite grandson Ethan’s lacrosse games and going on adventures with her sister and daughter (The Girls”) to fulfill her “wish list.” Most of all, she loved her family, her friends and her home.

She lived in Vassalboro her entire life and had strong ties to its history and community. She attended Carl B. Lord Grammar School in North Vassalboro and then graduated from Winslow High School in 1965. She married her childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Michael J. MacKenzie, on December 16, 1966. Together they had son Michael and daughter Michelle (“Mickey”). They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this winter.

Linda worked at the C. F. Hathaway Shirt Company, in Waterville, cooked with her mother at the Carl B. Lord School, waitressed and landscaped, but the job she loved best was that of a wife and mother. She was blessed to have lifelong friends and remained close to several of her classmates.

For those who knew her well, it will come as no surprise that she remained stubborn and say, she never gave up, she fought with tremendous strength, courage and grace, and even during her darkest hours, she had a grateful heart and sense of humor. She began and ended her journey her way.

She was predeceased by her older sister Arlene (Crosby) Heighton.

She leaves behind her devoted husband Mike; son Michael; daughter Michelle and her husband Jeffrey Furlong and their son Ethan; her sister Helen Lindberg and her husband Erek; sister-in-law Susan MacKenzie; five nieces; one nephew; several great-nieces and nephews; her only living aunt, Barbara (White) Letourneau and her husband Norman; and several cousins in both Maine and Connecticut.

Linda touched the lives of so many and made the world a kinder, more beautiful place.

There will be a celebration of Linda’s life on Saturday October 1, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Olde Mill Place, in North Vassalboro. Please visit www.redingtonfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with her family.
