ALLEEN THOMPSON

WATERVILLE – Alleen Thompson, 101, passed away on November 13, 2020. Alleen was born in Waterville on September 18, 1919, to Margaret Arnold Thompson, of Waterville, and Mark R. Thompson, of Brookfield, New York.

An amazing woman, she lived an extraordinary life. Her love of books began early as she spent a good deal of time at the Waterville Public Library in her youth. She was a graduate of Waterville High School, and the class of 1940 at Colby College, Waterville, with a major in geology. She lived at home rather than on campus and became a member of the Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She went on to earn her master’s degree in library science at Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts.

Alleen was accomplished in her work yet humble about her life experiences. She was a pioneer of her times when, while working at Penn State’s Engineering Library in 1941, the Navy organized its women’s auxiliary known as WAVES. She most enthusiastically joined the third class of WAVES and was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Miami, Florida, as a communications officer. As a WAVE ensign during World War II she was re-assigned to Kaneohe Naval Air Station, in Hawaii, in 1943. It was full on wartime in Hawaii and the work was demanding; decoding messages by the thousands, midnight watches, and tending the radios, teletypes, and switchboards. Alleen left the Navy after the war in 1945 as a full lieutenant.

Because Alleen was such a modest person about her accomplishments, some of her prestigious jobs may never be known to all. We do know, however, that for six years she held a top library post at the State Department of Public Health in Berkeley, California.

Around 1955, General Electric came calling as they were building the Dresden (Illinois) Power Station, to include a nuclear reactor. Her job would be to build a brand new library on atomic science from the ground up. The library was over 2,000 square feet and contained thousands of highly technical books, magazines, and publications, many of which were classified.

Still a WAVE Reserve, Alleen continued her communications job as head of General Electric Company’s special library at the Atomic Power Equipment Department, in San Jose, California. She was one of only a handful of women who rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Reserve, a post only two slots below Captain’s rank.

In 1965 she became the first West Coast woman elected as President of the Special Libraries Association. As Mrs. Elizabeth B. Roth (Head Librarian of the Standard Oil of CA Library) stated in her announcement, “In Alleen are combined the high standards of a New England education and the rough experience of mastering several western libraries. You can’t show her a library problem that can’t be identified, attacked, and licked. Eastern skeptic and Western pragmatist, she admires wit and aggressiveness, especially in special librarians.” One of the highlights of her presidency was being invited to the White House and introduced as one of the “1200 Most Influential Persons in the United States” for her time. In 1970, she was tasked with setting up a library in Korea. In 1982, Alleen was named to the Special Libraries Association’s Hall of Fame.

She traveled extensively for work and pleasure visiting Art Museums throughout Europe, Japan, and India to name a few. Alleen visited well over 40 countries during her remarkable life journey.

Alleen returned to her Waterville roots in 1998 making the solo cross-country trip by car with her belongings and two cats. Being back in Waterville, Alleen had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and with what the city had to offer. That had to include all things Colby! She enjoyed lectures, the Great Books programs, the plethora of exhibitions at the Colby Museum of Arts, attending all of Professor Brancaccio’s film classes offered through the Goldfarb Center, and the campy fun at the Broadway Musical Reviews, which she often introduced to friends. As a proud alumna, Alleen followed every accomplishment, accolade, and innovation of the college with great interest.

She enjoyed shows and events at the Waterville Opera House, and was a member of the Waterville Historical Society, and the Central Maine Garden Club. Alleen supported the many animals at Waterville Humane Society even donating “Poppy’s Room” out of her love of cats. She was an active supporter of her favorite charities, many including causes for all animals and the environment as well as the Waterville branch of the Salvation Army.

Alleen was a traditionalist by nature, preferring to be addressed as Miss Thompson unless she knew you on a more personal basis. She loved wearing stylish skirts and dresses rather than slacks complimented by the perfect hairstyle and handbag. She enjoyed eating out and did not mind travelling for good meals, most notably with her group of friends who made their yearly outing to The Lost Kitchen.

Out of respect for her wishes, there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the care of Veilleux & Redington Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, ME. http://www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alleen’s name to Colby College, Division of College Advancement, 173 Main St., Suite 201, Waterville, ME 04901, or Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Rd., Waterville, ME 04901. ERVIN H. TYLER

WINSLOW – Ervin Herman Tyler, 99, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, following a long battle with COPD. He was born on June 7, 1921, in Benton.

He was the beloved husband of Audrey (Witham) Tyler for 75 years. Theirs was the strongest of love, and a marriage to emulate. His home was always full of joy and laughter. He teased Audrey endlessly which was a true display of his affection. How he loved his family, it was the “core” of his existence.

As a young boy he moved to Freedom. During those early years he loved “Gram” Tyler’s cooking, sliding, working on the farm and playing with the family dogs and cats. He went to grammar school in Freedom and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1940. He played on the baseball and track teams. In his adult years, he liked to hunt, fish, garden, mow lawns, go to country fairs, going for rides with the family to see relatives and friends, grocery shopping for and taking family and friends to appointments.

He enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Boston Red Sox, wrestling and various news channels. He liked discussing current events as well as reminiscing about “the good old days”. His memory was remarkable even at age 99.

For years, he attended the University of Maine’s girls’ basketball games, even at the age of 88. He loved going to his grandson’s swim meets and his great-grand children’s soccer games.

In the 80’s, he enjoyed going to breakfast with his “breakfast group” seeing the folks at Wendy’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. Ervin met friends at McDonald’s in Winslow every Wednesday night for 15 years and they became his “McDonald’s family”. He was very fond of his neighbors who became true friends and so enjoyed visits from them.

Ervin was an active member of the Benton Falls Congregational Church. For years, he was an usher and worked on church suppers. He loved serving people and telling them about his church. He was very fond of his ministers, Jack Quigg and Pastor Kim Shrader and looked forward to their visits.

In 1940, Ervin worked in the woods cutting cord wood for $2.00 a day and got a cord a day. In 1941, he worked at the Bryant Mill (Freedom Novely Mill) now known as the Mill at Freedom Falls. He ran a lathe making wooden screwdriver handles for 32 cents an hour. He was the only person who ever worked there that attended the mill open house on June 5, 2013. Two of the handles he made are on display in the mall showcase. Ervin was in a documentary film about the mill which was part of the Camden Film Festival and was shown at the Strand Theater, in Rockland, on September 29, 2013. At this premier, Tony Grassi, project manager, showed the audience two of the screwdriver handles he made, even at age 92, Ervin was able to attend this premier and was recognized by the audience of over 200 people. In March 2014, the Freedom Mill documentary was shown at the Environmental Film Festival, in Washington, DC.

Ervin had an extremely strong work ethic. He worked for Hollingworth and Whitney and Scott Paper Company, in Winslow, for 41-1/2 years, retiring in 1983 as a back-tender on #4 paper machine. He only missed a few days of work due to surgery. When the roads were impassable, he would snowshoe or walk the 10 miles to work. After retiring, he worked part time at Poor Bob’s Store, in Benton.

Ervin was a World War ll Army veteran entering the service in 1944 and discharged in 1946. He served in the European Theatre and the 15th District Mechanized Constabulary. He took his basic training at camp Joseph T. Robinson, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had to be a skilled hunter to survive back home in Freedom, and this skill served his well in the Army. Ervin went overseas when the Battle of the Bulge was nearly over. It took eleven days on a liberty ship to arrive in France. From France, he went to Belgium, Holland and finally Germany. He was the oldest charter member of the Winslow VFW Post #8835, and one of the oldest members of the Fairfield American Legion Post #14. Yearly, he attended the ceremonies in the Veterans Memorial Park in Winslow, standing for hours, even in the coldest of weather. He was in many Winslow Fourth of July parades. He loved his country and in a show of patriotism only purchased American made products.

At age 97, Ervin needed help with the activities of everyday living and his primary caregiver, from Helping Hands, was Mike Levesque. When Ervin was asked how Mike cared for him, Ervin had one word to describe Mike’s care, “Perfect”. They became good friends and they shared many laughs and stories. He was also very pleased with the work of his part time caregiver, Angela Marie Tracy.

Ervin was a handsome man with a “boyish grin” and loved to tell stories and jokes. He had the “unique” quality of making others feel special.

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Tyler; his grandsons, Mark McCutcheon and his wife Laurie, Michael and his wife Deanna McCutcheon; three great-grandchildren, Justin McCutcheon, Kristi McCutcheon Francey and her husband Dana, and Ian McCutcheon; his great-great grand children, Madeline and Liam Francey, and Penelope McCutcheon; a brother, Clarence Tyler Jr.; son-in-law, Harold McCutcheon and his partner Sharon Lamb; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

After graduation he started a career which spanned 44 years. His first two years were at Hamilton Standard, a division of United Aircraft, working in the Experimental Jet Engine Fuel Controls Section. He returned to Maine in 1965 to work at Bath Iron Works as a master machinist and a member of the International Association of Aerospace Workers. In 1973 he left Bath Iron Works for a job at Bridge Construction Company, in Windsor. In 1983 he returned to Bath Iron Works where he remained until his retirement in 2006. At each place he worked he was recognized not only as an outstanding machinist but also a problem solver.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Whitefield Lions Club, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, and Windsor snowmobile and four wheeler clubs.

Tom loved the outdoors, even as a child. He spent many hours hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, jet skiing and four wheeling on his property and throughout Maine. His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July where you could find him celebrating with family and friends, steaming lobsters, and firing his replica U.S.S Constitution cannon that he made by himself.

He was always very generous and usually had a smile on his face, even when challenged with much adversity. He was always willing to lend a hand to a friend in need or come up with an idea to solve a problem. He was as tough as nails and complained little. He was a man of his word and kept his promises.

Many things brought him joy. Most of all he had a love for life, loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who thought the world of him.

DAVID K. DIXON

CLINTON – David Keith Dixon, 77, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, inside the home he built, in Clinton, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on April 5, 1943, to Lorimer Dixon and Mildred Nason as their sixth and final child.

When Dave was less than two years old, his father died. Nine years younger than his closest sibling, Dave was presented with and accepted responsibilities typically designated for those much older. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 where he trained and worked as a mechanic. He was stationed in Korea and Panama and would fondly recall details of his escapades long after memories started escaping him.

When Dave returned from the service, he was the envy of a small town when he courted and married Janet Dow. The couple married in 1965 and celebrated their 55th anniversary last month. Dave and Jan moved out of state early in their marriage and lived in Virginia and Florida before returning home. Dave, Jan, and their two eldest children moved into his childhood home with Mildred to care for her. In 1977 a fire claimed the long-time family home which resulted in Dave building their next home. Shortly thereafter, Dave and Jan spent multiple years of any free time they had building a log house nearby which became their family’s home.

The independence developed early on through responsibility and hard work, served Dave well as he provided for his family, and worked endless hours to improve their lives. That same independence led Dave to pursue a career where he answered only to himself and those dependent on him. Dave pedaled auto parts all over Maine until buying the former Tiny Bill’s building on Main St., in Clinton, and converting it in 1992 to DAC Distributors, an auto parts store, which now, with its second owner, is still open for business. Dave operated the business along with his eldest son Randall until 2009. Dave developed his venture into a successful business without doing it at anyone else’s expense. He was honest and refused to profit more than he felt was fair. He gave his customers the benefit of the doubt and was always willing to allow his patrons credit.

Dave recognized what a gift his wife was to him and kissed her goodbye every time he left the house. Despite his fleeting memory he never forgot who she was. He was tenacious, loved a good adventure, dreamt of lakes he hadn’t fished, enjoyed watching car racing, holidays, whoopie pies, bumper cars, watching the birds, and being in the woods. He had an incredible ability to tell stories that would often result in the listener being held hostage until he was done telling it. His favorite place was on the water with a fishing rod in hand and a trout on the hook. He was able to fulfill a dream when he and Jan built their camp on Moosehead Lake where his family would gather every Memorial Day and July 4th.

Dave worked hard until his mind and body failed him. He battled Alzheimer’s Disease for the last decade and never conceded. He fished, cut, and delivered wood and helped out those he loved until the end. He recognized he wasn’t as sharp as he’d once been throughout the majority of his struggle, but Dave’s deterioration still exceeded most’s baseline.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Dixon, and their four children, Randall (Kimberly), Michelle, Douglas, Chad (Tawnya); his six grandchildren, Eric (Danielle) Elizabeth, Katherine, Isaac, Evelyn, and Luke; his two great-grandchildren; his brother, Clifford Dixon, his sisters-in-law, Linda White and Stephanie Dow, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are through Dan and Scott’s Cremation.

For those wishing to make memorial contributions in his memory please consider the Alzheimer’s Association or Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

There will be a graveside service at Greenlawn Cemetery, in Clinton.

VIRGINIA C. MOODY

WATERVILLE – Virginia C. Moody, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, October 3, 2020. She was born the daughter of Thomas and Ruth Creswell (Mosher)

“Ginny”, as both her friends and family knew her, was a lifetime educator, graduating in 1971 from the University of Maine at Farmington with a secondary education degree, and going on to earn both her Masters in Special Education and her CAS in Literacy/Education from the University of Maine at Orono. Ginny began her career as a High School History/Government teacher and coach at Jay High School, riding her motorcycle on the back roads to work and creating a name for herself and a fan club amongst her coworkers and students; the school yearbook was dedicated to her in her third year of teaching.

She left teaching when her first child, Jonathan, was born and while he was young created and ran a pre-school with her cousin and close friend Talie Mickewich. She returned to teaching as an ed-tech, working simultaneously at True-Value Hardware Store to put herself through school to become a certified special education teacher at Jay Elementary school. She brought her passion and creativity to the position: turning her classroom into a dynamic space (at one point creating a life-size replica of a Tipi), creating art and music and food with her students, and coaching their participation in the Special Olympics. She was a constant advocate for her students; being in her classroom felt like being with your family. She would remain in Special Education before Multiple Sclerosis forced her to retire in February 2001.

As a child, Ginny grew up loving art and music and animals. Memento boxes and family photo collections contain her art, clippings from public speaking contests, talent shows, theatrical and musical performances either solo or with her family; she often shared the stage with her parents Thomas and Ruth Creswell (Mosher), and her brothers, Tom and David. Family life centered around music, with large gatherings and sing-a-longs around the piano, and Ginny carried on this love and tradition of music in much the same way – spending late nights singing with friends during her college years and with both friends and relatives (guitar in hand) on porches at Bear Springs Camps, in Rome. She brought music to each of her classrooms and created her own music-filled family time with her two young children next to her at the piano, singing on trips in the car, or most anywhere with a guitar in hand, passing down her favorite songs and those of her parents. Some of her favorite memories during her last years were listening and singing along to her daughter Miranda’s performances in her room at Oak Grove Nursing Home (Waterville).

Daughter of a woolen mill superintendent, Ginny lived in Waterville, where she was born, Greenville, South Carolina, Gorham, and Corinna, before settling in Dryden and then Jay, before relocating again to Waterville. Her mother Ruth’s (Mosher) family homestead in Rome, and the legendary Bear Spring Camps, were important places for her, both as a child and as an adult, working at Bear Spring, taking vacations there, and attending family gatherings, reunions, and multi-generational Thanksgiving celebrations up the hill (McGowan’s/Richardson’s). Throughout her life, family time, whether spent with her parents’ generation, with her beloved cousins and friends, or with her own children and grandchildren, were her most cherished moments.

Ginny was creative, resourceful, and handy, growing a bountiful family garden, transplanting roadside tiger lilies, ferns, and black-eyed susans to the edge of her yard, splitting her own firewood, sewing clothes and Halloween costumes, building the things they needed, and creating a wonderful childhood for her kids filled with woods and climbing rocks, sand piles and a clubhouse (The Fern Hideaway), whiffle ball games and driveway basketball matches, and endless hours on the beach at Bear Springs Camps. Those who knew and loved Ginny think of her as one of the most kind, caring, creative, talented, and loving people they’ve ever known. With an indomitable spirit and spark for life, she lived life to the fullest and shared her strength, courage, and love with everyone until the very end.

Ginny spent the last 14 years of her life living at the Oak Grove nursing home, in Waterville, where she found a true home with people who deeply cared for her and considered her family.

Ginny is survived by her daughter, Miranda Moody Miller; her son, Jonathan Dale Moody and his wife Shelly; her three grandchildren, Jacob, Grace, and Olivia; her brothers, Thomas and David Creswell and their families; and numerous cousins, and extended family.

An outdoor funeral service took place Saturday, October 10, at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade.

An online guestbook may be signed, and memories shared at http://www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com

A sweet, gentle, generous person and a devout Catholic, Alice was a true survivor, having dealt with many health issues over the past 25 years. She spent most of her life in Waterville, save for the many adventures with her husband and children in Aroostook County, Campobello Island, and dozens of lake fronts throughout Maine during his career as civil engineer with the Bridge Division of the Maine DOT. She would always set up the household in these several locations, caring for her children, keeping them safe, including counting heads in the water.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, October 8, 2020

PAUL J. SIROIS

WATERVILLE – Paul J. Sirois, 68, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020, at Maine Medical Center. He was born in Waterville on March 30, 1952, the son of Louis and Cecile (Bolduc) Sirois.

He graduated from Waterville High School in 1970 and from the University of Maine Farmington in 1974. He later earned a master’s degree in literacy from the University of Maine Orono.

Paul was passionate about his career as an elementary education teacher. He taught at Mount Merici Academy, in Waterville, for ten years, and then moved on to Windsor Elementary School, where he worked until his retirement in 2012. It was there that he met his soulmate, Beverly Hallett, when they were interviewing for the same position. Fortunately, they were both hired and their relationship grew. They were married in Waterville on December 9, 1989. Soon afterwards they started their family.

Paul was the proud father of three sons. His greatest joy was spending time with them. He got up early, juggled schedules, and traveled all across Maine and New England attending their games and school events, and made lots of friends along the way. In the summer, Paul hosted pool parties and swimming lessons for family and friends in his backyard pool. He and Bev enjoyed gardening, and planted a variety of colorful perennials around the pool. Paul was a history buff and an armchair political pundit. He loved sharing his insight and views about world affairs, and was a sharp critic of the current administration.

Paul was devoted to his family. When Bev’s health started to decline, he spent several years caring for her at home. He took over the cooking responsibilities when his wife was no longer able to, and he became a talented chef by tweaking old family recipes and watching the food network. He hosted Thanksgiving dinner every year for his large extended family. Paul taught all three of his sons to cook, and in recent years, they would gather every Sunday to prepare and enjoy a meal together.

Paul was predeceased by his wife; his parents; and his brother, Eugene.

He is survived by his sons Joshua, of Portland, Joseph, of Yarmouth, and Jacob, of Yarmouth; his sisters, Celia, of South Weymouth, Massachusetts, Anne, of Saco, Colette, of Saco, and Elizabeth (Robert) Letellier, of Biddeford; and a brother, Thomas (Janet), of Randolph; as well as many nieces and nephews.

EDWARD J. KING

OAKLAND – Edward “Bud” John King was born on June 6, 1923 in Rome, Maine, to John and Jessie (Blaisdell) King.

Bud began working at a young age and spoke fondly of late nights spent selling popcorn on Main Street, in Oakland. His strong work ethic, developed early, remained with him for the rest of his life.

In 1940, on a blind date, he met the love of his life, Josephine Thibeau. It must have been one hell of a date, as neither went on another with anyone besides each other. On December 29, 1943, in Leesburg, Florida, Bud and Jo were married. After 74 years of marriage, Bud’s love for Jo was as strong as ever: he’d never introduce her as “his wife” but always as “his bride.”

Bud enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in the Pacific Theater on Saipan during World War II. Upon his return, he managed Michaud’s Market, in Oakland, before eventually becoming owner and changing the name to Bud’s Food Center, where he worked for many years. While working, he and Jo also built their own house, which they finished in 1952. Built with plenty of large windows so that warm sunlight poured in, Bud spent countless mornings there drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, and reading historical nonfiction.

In 1957, Bud and Jo welcomed their daughter Dru into the world. Bud was active in many community organizations and events throughout the years, but the one that stands out the most is the annual Messalonskee Thanksgiving dinner. Bud got the idea from working in the store, where he spoke to people who had no one with whom to spend Thanksgiving. Bud, along with Mike Marston, decided to host an event where the community could come together to share a good meal and good conversation. The meal now serves more than 1,500 people at Messalonskee High School, in Oakland. As recently as last year, Bud was there, making the rounds, chatting with attendees and volunteers. Bud was a generous, hardworking, and kind man, who exuded positivity and warmth. Even during his final days, when asked how he was doing, he insisted, with a smile, that he was “percolating.”

Bud was predeceased by his bride, Josephine King, his parents, John and Jessie King; and his brother, Paul King (wife Jean).

He is survived by his daughter, Dru Aslam (husband Sunny, who provided years of love and care to both Bud and Jo), of Belgrade; his grandson Jai Aslam, of Raleigh, North Carolina (partner Aneri Pattani ,of Cheshire, Connecticut); step-grandsons Sharif Aslam, of Chesterville, Sunny Aslam, Jr., of Jamesville, New York, and Ali Aslam (wife Rebecca), of North Grafton, Massachusetts; second daughter Connie Brassbridge, of East Orland; niece Cindy Spurr (husband Tom), of Chuluota, Florida, nephew Paul King (wife Sue), of Lindley, New York; cousins Doug Blaisdell (wife Roxanne), of Rome, Roberta Hermans (husband Matthew) of Las Cruces, New Mexico; brother-in-law Arthur Pinkham, of Machiasport; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

CATHERINE M. MARSHALL

WATERVILLE – Catherine Marie Marshall, 95, died peacefully at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, Waterville, on Thursday, March 26, 2020. She was the second of seven children born to Walter and Marie Louise (Noonan) Smith, of Skowhegan. Cathy grew up and attended public school in Skowhegan. Cathy’s lengthy work career in retail sales began during high school behind the counter at McLellan’s, in Waterville. From there, she was hired by the local Sears and Roebuck store to work in its catalog department where she did so well that, within eight months, she was assigned to Fort Fairfield to handle its catalog department in that town. It was on a break visiting family and friends ‘back home’ that Cathy caught the eye of one Bertrand Marshall, of Waterville, looking for a dance partner to accompany him onto the floor of the Milburn Motel, in Skowhegan. This encounter was the beginning of a long-distance romance followed by good fortune when news arrived of an opening in the catalog department of Sears’ Waterville store. The rest is history.

Bertrand and Cathy Marshall were married in 1949. In attendance were Bert’s three daughters, Shirley (Marden), Martha (Castner) and Pauline (Perkins), who accepted Cathy in every way as their second (younger) Mom and dear friend and who Cathy came to love as her own. These newly weds made Waterville their home where Bert worked as a Ford mechanic and Cathy continued to master the Sears catalog. Pretty much every one of Cathy’s weekends during the warmer months was devoted to supporting her husband in the activity of fishing, smelting and trolling with streamer flies at ice out, lead-core line and sewn-on bait as the water warmed up. Cathy was a perfect fishing companion with lunches and foul weather gear packed and ready to go. A small camp on leased land came available in the 1960s on Skunk Point, Moosehead Lake, which provided an ideal get-away for this couple to enjoy their favorite pastime while in the company of their children, grandchildren and good friends.

At home when not working, Cathy enjoyed her membership and community service with the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority. She must have made a thousand May baskets and filled them with a ton of homemade fudge for its annual fundraiser. She especially enjoyed her weekly dates with her lunch group. Throughout her busy life (including 34 years with Sears) Cathy never forgot a birthday and was always the first to offer a hand with a project or get-together. She was respectful to all and always thoughtful to those in need.

Cathy’s kindness, generosity and love for her husband was apparent to all as she provided for his care at home during his last years. Her strength, independence and appreciation for the simple pleasures surrounding her allowed her to adjust and live a full life on her own.

During her final years, Cathy resided at Sunset Home, on College Avenue, Waterville, where she made many new friends among the residents and staff. It was here she allowed others to provide some assistance to her and lighten her load.

Cathy will be fondly remembered by her 10 grandchildren; her 15 great-grandchildren; and her six great-great-grandchildren; as well as by her 16 nieces and nephews from the Smith clan who continue to make the Skowhegan area their home.

A graveside committal service will take place on Saturday, October 3, at 10 a.m., at the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. Attendees are asked to be respectful of CDC guidelines for outdoor gatherings.
