WILLIAM C. TAYLOR

WINSLOW – William C. “Bill” Taylor, 88, of Winslow, died on Friday. June 7, 2019, from complications of Kidney and heart disease. Bill was born on September 2, 1930 in Belfast to William Taylor and Marion (Dickey) Taylor.

He grew up in Belfast and graduated from Belfast High School in 1949. On February 15, 1958 he married his wife of 61 years, Julia (Famolaro) Taylor. Together they raised a son, Christopher W. Taylor, also of Winslow.

Bill worked in the newspaper industry for much of his life. As production manager at the Fremont News Messenger, in Fremont, Ohio, and the Morning Sentinel, in Waterville. He played a major role in modernizing both newspapers during the 1970s and 1980s.

An avid motocyclist, Bill customized and rode several motorcycles over the years. He often travel with his friends all over Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, parts of Quebec, and Pennsylvania Dutch country.

Bill often joked about his wife, Julie, getting him “addicted” to bowling in his late twenties. It was a pastime he would enjoy for the rest of his life. In his later years, he and his good friend, Dennis Bowman ran the Pro shop at Central Maine Family Fun, in Skowhegan, where Bill gave lessons and drilled bowling balls for bowlers throughout the area.

Bill was predeceased by his father, William and his mother, Marion.

He is survived by his wife Julia; his son, Chris; and several cousins.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at T & B Celebration Center, 414 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan, on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 1 p.m.

ROBERT H. FERREIRA

UNITY – Robert Henry Ferreira, 76, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on September 7, 1942, the only child of Henry and Edna Ferreira.

Bob, as he liked to be called, was raised in Unity and graduated from Unity-Freedom Academy, class of 1961. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Beaulieu, on September 2, 1961.

Bob loved living in Unity and staying connected with many lifelong friends. He was a hard worker and if not at work you could find him always out mowing the lawn, plowing the snow or tinkering on whatever he could find. He was the owner of Ferreira Trucking, which he started will still working a full-time job at the former Chinet Co., in Fairfield, or Richard L. Hodges, in Unity.

Upon his retirement he worked along side his son, Tim Ferreira, to make Ferreira Trucking what it is today. Bob’s passion was to be at the garage with all his employees, his dog, Max, and around the trucks. Aside from the passion of trucks he loved to go to the races and watch NASCAR, and happily shared this passion with his children and grandchildren. In his early years he enjoyed hunting, camping and snowmobiling.

He was predeceased by his parents, Henry Joseph Ferreira and Edna Anderson Ferreira; his son-in-law, Michael Dean Jones, and father and mother-in-law, Edward and Edwina Beaulieu.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Beaulieu Ferreira.

He was the father of Lori Ferreira Jones, of Unity, son, Timothy Ferreira and his wife, Suzanne, of Unity; grandfather of Amy Jones Corson and husband, Michael, of Unity, Adam Robert Jones and Nikki Abrahamson, of Unity, Alissa Jones Keene and husband,m Kyle, of Belfast, Nicholas Ferreira and Hannah Ferreira, of Unity; his eight great-granddaughters, Kaylee, Allyee and Rylee Corson, Mikala, Kristyn, Kelsey and Savanna Jones, all of Unity, and Raegan Keene, of Belfast; his sister-in-law, Ann Beaulieu Maglaras and husband John, of Pittsfield.

MILDRED M. LAGASSE

WINSLOW – Mildred “Millie” Lagasse, 100, passed away peacefully at home on
Friday, June 21, 2019. She was born in Long Pond on August 1, 1918, the eldest daughter of George and Amanda Paradis Butler.

At the age of 16, Millie began working at the Skowhegan Woolen Mill where she remained for several years. She marred Joseph J. Lagasse on August 3, 1940. They were married 56 years before his passing in 1997. After getting married, Millie and Joe moved to the family farm at Twelve Corners in Madison, where they raised their five children. Millie was known for planting large vegetable gardens, canning most of the bounty for her family, and also sharing with neighbors.

After Joe passed away, Millie and her German Shepherd moved to Winslow to be closer to her daughters. While in Winslow, Millie made numerous friends through attending daily morning Mass at St. John the Baptist. Millie enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles, watching EWTN and Judge Judy, weekly lunches with her sons, going for rides, and especially spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Alfie St. Peter; and her five sisters, Evelyn, Alvina, Irene, Frances, and Theresa.

Survivors include her sons, David (Del), of Skowhegan, and Edward (Kathy), of Madison; daughters, Susan (Lou) and Nancy (Anna), of Winslow; grandchildren, April, Carol, Mark, Ted, Ben, and Erin; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Abby, Dresden, Owen, Drakke, Holly, and May; as well as several nieces and nephews.

PHILLIP H. WEBBER

CHINA – Phillip Harry Webber, Jr., 73, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, at his home, in China. Clarence. He was born July 25, 1945, in Anson, the son of Phillip H. Sr. and Florence (Sealey) Webber.

He earned his GED from Madison High School and attended Thomas College, in Waterville. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1966 until his honorable discharge. Phillip worked for many years as a post office clerk and enjoyed fishing, hunting, building and fixing things (he was called “Mr. Fix-It”). He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. On October 5, 2013, he married Luanne (Connelly) Caldwell.

He is survived by his wife of six years, Luanne (Connelly) Webber, of China; his mother, Florence (Sealey) Webber, of Madison; three daughters, Stacey L. Bodwell and husband Matthew, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Shannon Webber, of Biddeford, Elaine McClamma and husband Jaso of Embden; step-daughter, Betty Calcagni and husband Joshu of West Warwick, Rhode Island; step-son, Michael Roy and wife Stevan of Homer, Alaska; five sisters, Beth Crosley, of New London, Connecticut; Sherry Messer and husband Chet, of Madison, Euletta Seavey and husband Raymond, of Madison, Florence Bachelder and husband Rick, of Kingfield, Hattie Spaulding and husband Charlie, of Palmyra; two brothers, Clarence Webber, of Madison, and David Webber and wife Cathy, of Madison; uncle Theodore Sealey of East Madison, Maine; 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

LAURIS L. MONK

BENTON – Lauris L. Monk, 84, passed away Friday, June 26, 2019, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, in Waterville. He was born July 24, 1934, in Clinton, the son of Oscar and Ila (McNally) Monk.

He graduated from Clinton High School and the University of Maine at Orono. On June 23, 1956, he married Barbara Clukey, in Clinton. He spent most of his life farming and teaching and also worked for General Electric Co. and Edwards Corp., both in Pittsfield.

Lauris was a past member of the Clinton Lions Club and loved NASCAR, local raceways, Boston Celtics and college basketball.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara (Clukey) Monk, of Benton; son, Brian Monk and wife Melanie, of Skowhegan; daughter Laurie McLellan and husband David, of Benton; two granddaughters, Ashley Bouwkamp and husband David, of Virginia, Christina Monk, of Topsham; two grandsons, David Monk, of China, Brian Monk II, of Benton; two great-granddaughters, Alana Monk, of Waterville, Bellamie Monk, of Clinton; two great-grandsons, Aiden Bouwkamp and Kamden Bouwkamp, both of Virginia.

CONSTANCE Y. HALLEE

WATERVILLE – Constance Yvette Hallee, 101, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at Oak Grove Center, in Waterville. Connie was born in Winslow on February 9, 1918, and was the daughter of Leda and Donat Tardiff.

She attended Winslow public schools. Connie was an accomplished gardener, seamstress and homemaker, and in her spare time she liked to sew, embroider, crochet, read romance novels, bake delicious pastries and go shopping.

She is predeceased by her husband, Florian Francis Hallee; her brothers, Milton Tardiff and Maynard Tardiff, her sister, Lorraine Viguel; and her daughters-in-law, Karen Hallee and Peggy Hallee.

She is survived by her sister, Carlene Shores and spouse, Carroll Shores; and her children and spouses, Gerard Hallee, of Hillsboro, Oregon, Claudette and Pearly Simpson, of Waterville, Neal Hallee, of Auburn, Alan and Linnea Hallee, of Nashua New Hampshire, Gary Hallee, of Seattle Washington, and Lori Saleski and John Slusarz, of New Boston, New Hampshire; grandchildren and spouses, Justin Hallee, Steven Hallee, Karen and Jim Mayhew, Marc and Nancy Simpson, Richard Hallee and Larry Griffin, Margaret and Mike Tibbetts, Kris and Floriane Hallee, Jen and Katherine Little; and many great-grandchildren.

GLADYS YEATON

HAYESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – Gladys Yeaton, 96, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2019 in a North Carolina hospital. She was born April 6, 1923, in Vassalboro, the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Gove.

She graduated from Cony High School, in Augusta, and married Raymond L, Yeaton in 1944. Gladys was a lifelong active member of the Church of God, most recently she was an active member of Shooting Creek Church of God, in North Carolina. She has served as Sunday school teacher, Women’s Ministry Leader and taught Children’s Church. Her greatest love was that of her family and the joy they brought her throughout her life.

She was predeceased by her brother, Richard; her husband; two sisters, Ruth Haney and Evelyn Zilher; son Bennie; granddaughter, Carlene Yeaton; and great-grandson, Isaac Demers.

She is survived by her daughter and faithful caregiver, Carolyn Demers, of Hayesville, North Carolina; her husband, Bishop Scott Demers; sons Kennedy Yeaton, of Brooksville, Florida, and Ronald Yeaton of Mill Hall, Pennsylvania; daughters Gladys Weymouth, of Augusta, and Mary Ann Robinson of Chelsae; sister Kay Steward; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

CYNTHIA M. BRAWN

OAKLAND – Cynthia “Cindy” Mary Brawn, 67, passed away at home on the morning of July 8, 2019. She was born in Waterville on October 18, 1952, to Basil E. Trask Jr. (May 15, 1924 – June 12, 1999) and Corinne (Simons) Trask (Feb. 9, 1927 – Jan. 24, 1974).

Cindy graduated from Messalonskee High School, in Oakland, class of 1971, where she enjoyed playing basketball, softball, and bowling. As an adult, she worked at Dead River Co., in Waterville, LaVerdiere’s Drug Store, and finally New Balance Shoe, in Skowhegan, from where she retired.

She liked 12 ounce curls, horseshoes in the backyard, bowling and Victor Newman from Young and the Restless, but she loved winning. She was one of a kind. A loving wife and a legendary mother.

She is survived by her husband; and son; her sister; a nephew, Wade Stevens and his family; nieces Melissa Emery and her family, Amber Snell and her family, Sonia Poulin and her family; and nephew Darrel Trask and his family.

She was predeceased by her parents; her two brothers, Craig Trask, 57 (March 26, 1954 – Jan. 6, 2013) and Doug Trask, 62 (Nov. 8, 1949 – May 10, 2012); and great-nephew, Parker Millard Stevens (Sept. 30, 2009 – July 24, 2018).

LEO D. SYLVAIN JR.

VASSALBORO – Leo D. Sylvain Jr. passed away on July 9, 2019. Leo was born and brought up in Winslow, attending the Winslow schools and also Kennebec Valley Community College, in Fairfield.

In 1988 Leo met, fell in love with and married Tammy Ouellette. They were married one month shy of their 31st wedding anniversary.

Together, Leo and Tammy had two children, Virginia and Colby. Leo loved to travel and to make wonderful woodworking projects. He just loved any kind of gathering, especially big gatherings at his house. His wonderful laugh and sense of humor were one of a kind, they will be missed forever.

At the time of his retirement, Leo was working for the VA Togus as a boiler operator, a job he loved. Leo was a faithful communicant at Corpus Christi Parish,in Winslow/Waterville.

Leo was predeceased by his parents, Leo Sylvain Sr. and Virginia (Morris) Sylvain; his sister, Laura Jean, his brother, Michael Brandon; and his grandparents.

FAIRFIELD – Veronica Mary Rancourt, 87, passed away at MaineGeneral Medical Center on Tuesday, July 9, 2019. Veronica was born in Fairfield on February 19, 1932, the daughter of Ignacy Zimba and Staniska (Biedor) Zimba.

Veronica graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield. She went on to have a 42-year career at Huhtamaki (formerly Keyes Fibre Co.), in Waterville.

Veronica belonged to the former Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, of Fairfield. She enjoyed time with her family on Snow Pond, going to the coast for lobster, taking trips out of state and playing slot machines.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ignacy and Staniska Zimba; her son, Rodney Rancourt; six brothers, John Zimba, Eddie Lambert, Frank Zimba, Ted Zimba, Albert Zimba, and Robert Zimba, and two sisters, Stella Popolaski and Mona Couture.

Veronica is survived by her spouse, Eugene Rancourt; son Daniel Rancourt and his wife Gail Rancourt, of Oakland; grandsons, Christopher Rancourt and companion Rae Ann Dennis, of Waterville, Corey Rancourt and his wife Danica Rancourt, of Sidney; great-grandchildren, Logan, Landon, Jayden, and Bentley; and granddaughter, Jasmin.

FREDERICK W. SAUCIER

GIBSONTON, FLORIDA – Frederick W. Saucier, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at his residence in Gibsonton, Florida. He was born on November 30, 1930, in Waterville, the son of Lionel and Leatha (Mann) Saucier.

He grew up in Vassalboro, the older brother to three sisters, Norma, Anne “Bobbi”, and Paulette. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1947 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. Fred married his high school sweetheart Sybil (Fitch) on September 4, 1948.

Fred proudly served 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps in active and reserve service and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines earning multiple decorations and commendations including the Bronze Star Medal “V”, and the combat action ribbon.

Sybil was the love of his life. They married at St. Bridget’s Church, in Vassalboro, and started their incredible adventure together. For 69 years they shared the love of a lifetime, a marriage filled with integrity, unwavering devotion, great joy and accomplishment.

Fred retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel in 1971 and accepted a position at Billerica High School, in Billerica, Massachusetts, serving as senior military educator and infantry officer for JROTC Leadership program. He taught for 13 years, earning a bachelor of science at New Hampshire College along the way.

In 1977, Fred and Sybil bought Green Valley Campground, on Webber Pond, in Vassalboro. He loved the outdoors and wanted to share his love of camping with others to provide the best family camping experience. He and Sybil made friends ot of strangers over the years they owned the campground and created lifelong memories for so many.

After his retirement from teaching in 1984, he and Sybil spent the summers at Green Valley and in the fall, Fred would drive their motorhome to Florida for the winter. They would stay at the FamCamp on MacDill Air Force Base where they reunited with other snow birds. They enjoyed golfing, visiting with friends, going to the local concerts and shows, and relaxing by the beach. Every May they would make the trip back to Maine to open the campground for another season.

In 2002, after 25 years, Fred and Sybil sold Green Valley to their granddaughter, Tiffany, who owns and operates it today. Fred and Sybil continued to spend the summers on Webber Pond.

Fred contributed to many charities anonymously, including PBS and the Red Cross. Fred loved life! He loved music, singing and dancing, sailing and skiing, horseshoes and horses. He was a natural athlete and worthy competitor on the tennis and racquetball court, golf course, or playing kickball in the yard. He loved playing bridge, and poker with the guys, as well as cribbage and chess.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, Sybil; his infant son, Frederick and son-in-law, David.

He is survived by his four children: Crystal, Thomas, Alecia and Jamie; his son-in-law, Jed; eight grandchildren: Jason, Tiffany, Evan, Alivia, Matthew, Phoebe, Ryan and Michael; six great-grandchildren: Samantha, Cameron, Hunter, Hailie, KC, Evan, and Sebastian; his sister, Norma and brother-in-law, Roland; sisters, Anne “Bobbi”, and Paulette; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Fred and Sybil will be held June 21 at 1300 (1 pm) at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta. Reception immediately following at The Old Mill Place, 934 Main St, Vassalboro.

KAY F. TOZIER

UNITY – Kay Frances Fernald Tozier, 87, passed away in Raymond, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Born May 21, 1932, in Troy, the daughter of Clyde and Marion Bragg Fernald, she lived in Troy for her early years including several years with her grandparents Medwin and Dora Fernald.

She also enjoyed time with her grandparents Oscar and Katie Bragg, her auntie Eula Bragg Knowlton, , and the Judson family. She graduated from Unity High School in 1949 and from Farmington State Teachers College in 1953.

Kay and Kenneth Elwood Tozier, Jr., were married June 26, 1954, and lived nearly all their married life in Unity. Kay was a teacher in Rockland, Scarborough, and for many years at Troy School where the library at the new school was dedicated to her.

She was a long-time member of Unity Union Church and the Noel Club, of Unity. She was a life-long learner and enjoyed reading, gardening, and travel. She traveled with the Farmington Alumni group for many years visiting some 30 countries. She was known for her compassion, generosity, patience, and subtle wit.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth “Babe” Tozier, Jr.

She is survived by her three children, Susan Tozier, of Raymond, New Hampshire. Joel Tozier and wife Nancy, of Sidney, and Deirdre Nash and husband Daniel, of Auburn, New Hampshire; and grandchildren Shelby Tozier, Ben Tozier, Amelia Nash and significant other Michael Gross and Meredith Nash Laliberte and husband Nick; brothers, James Fernald and wife Sally, nd Stephen Fernald and wife Barrie; sister-in-law Marilyn Tozier Owen and long-time companion Kenneth Phelps, of Largo, Florida; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Unity United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow at the Unity College Performing Arts Center, in Unity.

MARYELLEN JENNEY

OAKLAND – MaryEllen Jenney, 69, of Oakland, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at Oak Grove Center in Waterville. She was born in Biddeford on April 17, 1950, the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Florence A. (McKay) Michaud.

MaryEllen attended the University of Maine and obtained a degree in history. She enjoyed traveling, baking cakes, and spending time with her family.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Christopher John Couture.

MaryEllen will be sadly missed by her husband, Lawrence Chase Jenney; her son, Joseph William Couture and his wife, Virginia; her three grandchildren, Joseph Couture II, Barbie Lynn Couture, and Tobby Bragdon; her brother, John Michaud; and two nieces and one nephew.

FRANCES N. BRANN

WINDSOR – Frances N. Brann, 78, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at the Alfond Center for Health. She was born on February 11, 1941, the daughter of the late Leland and Doris James, of Chelsea. She was one of 16 siblings, with only five now surviving.

Mrs. Brann was a graduate of Erskine Academy and was a homemaker for most of her life.

She was predeceased by a son, Mark E. Brann, Sr.

Frances will be remembered by her husband of 51 years, Clarence Brann; a son, Roland Dyer Jr. his wife, Tracy, and family of Wiscasset; her daughter, Joyce Gilbert and husband, Ralph and sons, of Chelsea; and son, Pat Brann and his wife, Kim and family, of Vassalboro; siblings Janice Sirois, of Connecticut, Donald James, Sr. and Jean Cunningham and husband, Ronald, of Pittston, David James and companion, Hope Plummer, of Windsor, 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

FAIRFIELD – Tammy R. Jones, 48, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Central Maine Medical Center, in Lewiston. She was born January 8, 1971, in Lewiston, the daughter of Elizabeth R. Jones.

She graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, in 1990. She was a member of the Loving Caring Hands food Pantry. She started at the food pantry when it first opened in 2008. Tammy liked going to the powwow and dancing with her Native American family and had been going for 13 years. She liked making Native American jewelry, cooking, working with her computer, watching TV, going for walks and spending time with family and friends.

Tammy is survived by her significant other of 30 years, Alan Sabins, of Fairfield; sister-in-law Barbara Meservie, of Fairfield; brother-in-law Jim Sabins, of Skowhegan; sister Nikki Cahill, of Madison; brother Tommy Jones, of Madison; five nieces, Barbara Berry, Star Sabins and Jayme Sabins, all of Skowhegan, Ashley Corossan, of Madison, Tricia Corossan; two nephews, Walter Meservie, Aaron Corossan; five great-nieces; seven great-nephews.

CLAUDETTE J. PAQUETTE

BENTON – Claudette Joan (Elliott) Paquette, 85, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta. Claudette was born in Fairfield on August 3, 1933, to Claude & Doris (Pooler) Elliott.

She attended schools in Fairfield and graduated from Lawrence high school in 1951. Known to her friends as “Pinky,” she was a player on the Lawrence High School girls basketball team where she was awarded the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship medal. She passionately followed sports throughout her lifetime, as she loved watching the UConn women’s basketball team, the Duke Blue Devils men’s team and her Pittsburgh Steelers.

Claudette married Hilaire Paquette, of Winslow, on February 19, 1955, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, in Fairfield. Her marriage to an enlisted airman took her and their six children away from family and friends, moving every three years to various airbases from Maine to California. She was alone with the kids for months at a time due to Hilaire being shipped out of the country. During his year-long deployment to Vietnam, Claudette went to work at the Lestoil Plant, in Massachusetts. During this period of time, Jackie Libby (Claudette’s sister) and Maureena Sylvester, “Babysitter extraordinaire,” took turns staying with the children.

Upon Hilaire’s retirement from the service in 1972, the family moved back to Maine. Claudette continued to work as a millworker at Keyes Fibre (now Huhtamaki), in Waterville, until her retirement in 1986.

Claudette enjoyed shopping at “the K-Mart” and was especially fond of her “Thursday Date” with her son-in-law Paul, running errands, doing scratch tickets and ending the day at the Villager Restaurant, in Waterville, where she was spoiled by her friend, waitress Joann.

She loved being surrounded by her children and grandchildren, especially at her famous Christmas buffet which featured her home made toutiere pies, the kids’ favorite Banana-Split cake, and endless mounds of shrimp.

Claudette is survived by her husband of 64 years, Hilaire Paquette, of Benton, her six children: Angela (Paul) Cairnie, of Winslow; Paul (Joyce) Paquette, of Winter Springs Florida; Mike (Sue) Paquette, of Auburn; Cindy Paquette, of Benton; Jeff (Diane) Paquette, of Durham, New Hampshire; David Paquette, of Benton; and her brothers Daniel (Barb) Elliott, of Fairfield and Jerome (Helen) Elliott, of Waterville; grandchildren: Nicholas, Jeffrey Daniel, Aaron, Jason, Kelsey, Holly, Marissa, Sarah, Elizabeth and Hannah; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister (and best friend) Jackie Libby, and Jackie’s husband Delford.

A family graveside service will be held on June 29, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, in Waterville. Friends are invited to join the family for the celebration of her life at the Winslow’s MacCrillis-Rousseau VFW Post #8835, at noon.

BEATRICE S. WITHAM

WINSLOW – Beatrice Spencer Witham, 94, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019. Beatrice was born on August 7, 1924, in East Benton. She was the daughter of Alfred and Dorothy (Stewart) Spencer.

Beatrice graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, class of 1942. She married William “Bill” Witham Sr., of Winslow, on November 18, 1945. They were married for 39 years, until the time of his death.

Bea lived a full and active life. One of Bea’s favorite things to do was to ride motorcycles with her sons, Ron and Bill Jr. Her last ride with Ron was when she was 85 years old.

On 8-8-88 at 8 o’clock, Bea married Arthur “Jack” Poissonnier. She enjoyed many years with Jack.

When Bea graduated from high school, she started working at Berry’s Stationary, in Waterville. Her next employment was at Cottle’s Supermarket, in Waterville, which eventually became Hannaford. Bea worked there as a cashier for over 25 years. Her customers voted for her to become the first ever “Employee of the Month.” All of her customers thought that she had a beautiful smile. Her family thinks so too. On Friday nights, her checkout line went all the way to the back of the store. Her customers gladly waited for her. They would say, “She is my favorite cashier.”

Beatrice was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Dorothy Spencer; husband, William T. Witham Sr.; sister, Mary Spencer Ackley; and brother, Robert Spencer.

Beatrice is survived by her four children, sons, Ronald Witham and wife, Paula, of Clinton, William T. Witham Jr. and wife, Therese, of Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Witham and wife, Susan, of Bath, and daughter, Diane Witham Poulin and husband, James, of Winslow; eight grandchildren, Bridgett Witham Redstone, of Remington, Indiana, William T. JEFFREY L. VARNEY

ALBION – Jeffrey L. Varney, 57, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019. Jeff was born on May 17, 1962, to Earl Obed and Beverly Varney, in Waterville.

He attended high school at Nokomis High School, in Newport, and Maine Central Institute, in Pittsfield, where he played football, and later received his GED from Waterville Adult Education.

Jeff spent his early years in the trees, working for Lucas Tree and Asplundh. Jeff moved on to becoming a “jack of all trades” and was regularly seen on roofs, building garages or fixing just about anything that came his way. His grandkids referred to him as “working grandpa,” which made him smile. He was always quick to lend anyone a hand, no matter what it took.

Jeff loved to spend time with his fishing pole and was never short on a good fish story. He had a passion for creating something unique for everyone. His talent for drawing, wood-burning and etching never ceased to amaze those around him. Jeff loved to bring out the guitar, especially during his favorite annual camping trip.

Jeff was able to fulfill his lifetime dream of seeing Alaska last year. He enjoyed every moment of the beautiful sights, taking endless photos. Jeff tried feeding a bear some cookies and caught the biggest fish of his life – no fish story there!

He is survived by his companion and best friend, Joy Buker; his children, Eric and Darcina Varney, Shelley and Russell Horan; his grandchildren, Brodyn, Jayden, Kodi, Wyatt and Serina; his great-granddaughter, Rose; and siblings, Sharon and Steve McPherson, Hazel and Larry Rossignol, Paula and Brad Thorpe, Earl Jr. (Skip) and Tish Varney, Zachary (Dean) and Patty Varney, Norma Morey, Michael and Anita Varney, Karen and Steve French, Benjamin Varney, Randy and Tanya Varney and David Varney.

GERARD GAGNE, 95, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on November 14, 2018. He immigrated to Maine with his family in 1950, where he settled in Madison. He worked most of his adult life for Scott Paper Company as a foreman in the Woodsland Division.

ELAINE D. HADIDIACOS, 76, of Rockville, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Holy Cross Hospital. Elaine vacationed every summer at Pattee Pond, in Winslow, where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. ROBERT W. LACOMBE, 75, of Lakeland, Florida, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. He was born on February 24, 1944, the son of Marie (Veilleux) and Leopold Lacombe. He moved to Florida, from Winslow, 13 years.

DONALD B. CLARK

WINSLOW – Donald B. Clark, 58, of Winslow, died Saturday,  March 30, 2019, at his home in Winslow. He was born in Key West, Florida, on December 9, 1960, the son of Beatrice and Alfred Clark.

He attended and graduated from Southern Aroostook High School before attending the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

After a couple of years, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a military policeman. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Vermont where he obtained his nursing degree and worked at Maine Medical Center, in Portland, and later at Civista Medical Center, in Maryland.

Don was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and had a love of animals, especially dogs. He always had a special place in his heart for his long-term companions Heidi, the St. Bernard and Hutch, the hound dog. By far, Don’s greatest pleasure and the light and love of his life was always his daughter, Michelle. Although adversity with his mental health robbed of much of the joy life had to offer, Don will be remembered for his generosity, empathy, and his readiness to help anyone in need.

Don is survived by his daughter, Michelle Roy, of Caribou.

WINSLOW – Therese Rossignol, 89, a long-time resident of Winslow, died Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Oak Grove Center, in Waterville. She was born to the late Edward and Feleine Roy on November 19, 1929, in Winslow.

On her journey she joined a sister, Jeanne Labonte, and a brother, Laurier.

Therese graduated from Winslow High School. She worked at Lockwood Cotton Mill, in Waterville, which later became C.F. Hathaway Shirt Factory, was a seamstress and a cake baker and decorator.

She was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking, having a camp, gardening, and carpentry. She camped over 28 years at Happy Horse Shoe, organized the senior cards on Wednesday nights and day trips and mostly enjoyed planning family gatherings.

Therese was married to Raymond over 70 years. On October 2, 1948, they were married at Saint John the Baptist Church, in Winslow.

She is survived by her husband Raymond; six children, Elaine Ron and husband Romiro, of Spain, Christine Nihtegale, of New Mexico, Claudette Nithsdale, of Winslow, Arthur and wife Deborah, of Skowhegan, George and wife Barbara, of Cornville, Anthony and wife Donna, of Winslow; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Estelle Duquette, of New Jersey and Jacqueline Bourque, of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews.

The celebration of life for Therese will be Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m. at Saint John’s Church, Winslow. Her burial will be at Togus.

OAKLAND – George “Podgie” Leighton, 84, passed away unexpectedly at EMMC in Bangor on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. He was born in Waterville, on February 21, 1935, to George “Barney” and Gladys (Rushton) Leighton.

Podgie graduated from Williams High School, in Oakland, and served in the Naval Reserves and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

He worked as an iron worker for Local #496 for 33 years. He was a mail carrier and a local bus driver for a short time following his retirement.

Podgie had a lifelong love of airplanes and flying and was a licensed pilot for many years. In 1960, he married the former Ann Collier, they were together for 56 years.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, and his sister, Barbara.

FAIRFIELD – Patricia (Ryan-Alkas) Smith, 83, of Fairfield and formerly of Bristol, Connecticut, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019, at Mount Saint Joseph, in Waterville following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born August 31, 1935, in Bristol, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Edward and Victoria (Lozefski) Ryan.

She graduated from Terryville High School and then became a telephone switchboard operator. She also worked at Humason Manufacturing, Industrial Comp., Stanley Works, and eventually the Credit Union. Patricia then moved to Maine where she worked at Taconnet Federal Credit Union, in Winslow, and met and married Roger Smith. In her spare time, she enjoyed bird watching, traveling, baking and cooking, and especially fishing. She loved shopping for clothes, jewelry and shoes and wore her outfits with dignity and regality.

Patricia is survived by her husband Roger, of Fairfield; daughter Victoria Alkas and husband Henry Kozuch, of Enfield, Connecticut; sons Sam Alkas III, of Hudson, Florida, and Daniel Alkas and wife Debbie, of Granby, Connecticut; stepdaughter Valerie Elsworth and husband William, of Brewer; stepson, Timothy Smith and wife Sarah, of Bangor; grandchildren, Sabrina Badal, Samantha Hemmerich, Nate Elsworth, George Elsworth, Emma Smith, and Tana Smith; two great-grandchildren, James and Alex Hemmerich; brother, Donald Ryan and wife Geraldine; several nieces, and nephews.

WINSLOW – Rogelio Puente, 93, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

He served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a talented craftsman and home builder in central New Jersey. He served diligently as the president of the Spanish Club, in Carteret, New Jersey, for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine.

He was the father of Valentina Dorgai and Roger Puente; grandfather of Jessica Dorgai and , Stephanie Minnich, Meredith Puente; and the great-grandfather of Joshua Paulo Minnich.

JOHN T. FISH

WINDSOR – John Turner Fish passed away at home, in Windsor on Friday, May 17, 2019. John had a long four-year battle with small cell cancer. He was born on June 25, 1948, in Damariscotta, the first born of twins. John was the son of Miles Amos Fish Jr. and Melissa (Turner) Fish.

He was raised in Jefferson and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1966.

John joined the Air Force shortly after graduation and did two tours in Vietnam. After discharge, he worked for the Maine Department of Education, John began working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1987, first in Winthrop and then in Gardiner. He delivered mail in Gardiner, Randolph and Farmingdale for 27 years, until retiring in 2014.

John loved friendly competition, particularly when playing cribbage. He was still playing until a week before his death. John also enjoyed rummy, bridge, and golf.

He loved the yearly golf trip south with the guys, playing 36 holes daily. He was an avid music lover, especially Bob Dylan. John was also very proud to have more than 33 years of sobriety.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Robert Fish; and his son, Brandon Fish.

John is survived by his wife, Nancy (Walker) Fish and their children, Jason Walker, of Portland, Troy Fish, of Portland and Heather Wasik and her husband, Paul, of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Catherine Walker, of Jefferson, Marjorie Baldwin and husband Bob, of Nobleboro; his twin, Joan Jackson, of Jefferson, and Nancy Pierce and husband Lynn, of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Fred Jackson, of Brooks.

­WINSLOW – Harry E. Phillips, 89, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019, at his home. He was born Dec­em­ber 11, 1929, in South Hamp­ton Township, New Jersey, the son of Alonzo F. And Dorothy M. (Wells) Phillips.

He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Army until his honorable discharge. He worked for many years, in various jobs in the shoe shop industry.

Harry is survived by his son, Daniel E. Phillips and Partner Erika R. Bottjer, of Winslow; two sisters, Gladys Pyle, and Beatrice Bachman, both of New Jersey; two brothers, Ronnie Phillips and wife Rose, of New Jersey, Warren Phillips and wife Sue, of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Frances Phillips and family, of New Jersey; two granddaughters, Samantha D. Perry and husband Andrew, of Fairfield, Tabatha L. Phillips, of Anson; grandson, Tyler D. ARTHUR N. LARSEN

WINSLOW – Arthur Neil Larsen, 74, of Winslow, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Waterville on October 18, 1944, to Bernard and Rosie (Hunne­well) Larsen.

In his youth, Arthur attended Waterville schools and graduated from Waterville High School in 1963. In October of 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hamilton, in New York, after basic training. He then was sent to serve in Munich, Germany, until his honorable discharge in September 1966. He also served as a reservist until October 1969. Later, he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal.

On September 28, 1968, he married the former Joan Bergeron, of Oakland, and began their life together, locating in Winslow, where they celebrated each other through 50 years of marriage.

Early on in their married life, Arthur worked for Barrows Mayflower as an accountant. Later, he was employed by KVCAP as their transportation director, where he initiated the public busing service that continues to aid the greater Waterville and Augusta area to this day. He also took classes at Thomas College, in Waterville, at this time. His favorite years of employment were served at Larsen’s Variety—his convenience store/gas station, where he worked with his wife Joan and his children Arthur and Melissa. There he spread his goodness and humor to locals and patrons with a friendly smile and a helpful hand. He was also a loyal member and former president of the Lions Club.

During his younger years, he collected stamps and rare coins that he later used to share stories with his grandchildren. His love of history and family lineage sent him on a genealogy journey after his retirement that spanned approximately 15 years. He gathered research from cemeteries and libraries across the state and spent a lot of time at the Winslow Public Library. He also became ‘savy,’ connecting with other genealogists through Facebook. He loved the outdoors, which included feeding the birds and weeding his flower gardens; he may have had a few encounters with a squirrel or two. Watching golf on TV was also a beloved pastime. Above all, his most precious moments came from spending time with his family.

Arthur is survived by his wife Joan; son Arthur B. Larsen and wife Sheri, of Winslow; daughter Melissa Stanley, of Fairfield; grandchildren Joshua, Jacob, Katelynn and boyfriend Jacob Grenier, and Caleb-Jared (Larsen); grandchildren Samantha and boyfriend Dylan Young, Michael Jr., and Shelby (Stanley); sister-in-law Linda Nelson and sons, Dana and Chester; sister-in-law Evangeline Davidson and husband Robert; sister-in-law Shirley (Bard) Huard; sister-in-law Joyce Larsen-Lord; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great nieces.

He was predeceased by his father Bernard Larsen, mother Rosie Larsen, brother Allan Larsen, son-in-law Michael Stanley Sr., brother-in-law Dana Nelson Sr., brother Earl Shaw, sister-in-law Carol Bard and her husband Emile, and brother-in-law Clifford Haines Jr.

RICHARD E. BEALE

WINSLOW – Richard Earl Beale, 80, a 24-year veteran of the United State Air Force, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at his home in Winslow. He was born October 23, 1938, in Danforth, the son of Elijah M and Lilla B (Scott) Beale.

He was educated in the schools of Danforth and graduated from Clinton High School in 1957. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Unihted State Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1982. He was employed at Pratt and Whiney Aircraft prior to his career in the military, and with VIP Auto after his retirement from 1984 – 1987. He was a member of the Clinton Lions Club and the U.S. Air Force Association.

Richard is survived by his partner of 23 years, Anna Gerald; his children, William Michael Beale and his wife Diane, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Laura Hatfield, of Waterville, Richard Beale and his wife Karen, of Yuba City, California, Mailissa Cavanaugh and her husband Andrew, of Indian Springs, Florida, Mary Dowe and her husband Richard, of Windsor, and James Beale; his sister Mary Randall, of Augusta, sister-in-law Drena Beale, of Florida, and brother-in- law Peter Levesque, of Oakland; 21 grandchildren and too many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members to list.

RAYMOND A. PELLETIER

WINSLOW — Raymond Adrien Pelletier, 89, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2019. He was born on December 23, 1929, at the beginning of the Great De­pression, the eleventh of twelve children of Patrick and Desneiges (Plante) Pelletier.

Despite having been raised in poverty and having faced great adversity throughout his lifetime, he demonstrated determination, resourcefulness, frugality, integrity, vitality, grit, sincerity, kindness, and resilience, modeling these qualities for his family and friends.

Raymond, the first in his family to graduate high school, attended Winslow High School, class of 1948. He was on the Periscope staff and participated in numerous sports, lettering in baseball and football. During the final game of his senior year, he scored the game-winning touchdown against Lawrence High School. He was later selected as a running back on the All-Maine Team.

After high school, he attended Coburn Classical Institute, in Waterville, until its closure. He then attended the University of Cincinnati, but withdrew due to financial constraints. In 1950, he enlisted in the Navy where he rose to the rank of Ensign 1 as a diesel engine mechanic in the Engineering Division aboard the Battleship USS Wisconsin.

In 1952, he married Jeanne I. Poulin, his high school sweetheart. In 1954, Raymond received an honorable discharge and returned to Winslow. Under the GI Bill, he attended the University of Maine at Orono where he studied chemical engineering. Following his freshman year, he withdrew to support his growing family. Though never able to complete his college degree, he instilled his value for education in all of his children, each of whom graduated from Harvard University and subsequently became his “dream team” of professionals in the fields of education, engineering, finance, law, and medicine.

From 1955 to 1992, Raymond worked as a union ironworker and became a 65-year member of Ironworkers Local #496. He contributed to the construction of U.S. Navy communication towers, U.S. Department of Defense nuclear missile silos, bridges, paper mills, and numerous commercial and public buildings, including the Maine State Capitol Building and several hospitals. After retirement from active construction work in 1992, he continued for over a decade to serve as an instructor of rigging, reinforcing, and welding for the ironworkers apprenticeship program and the Maine Technical College System. He was a lifetime member the American Legion, Post Number 5, in Waterville and the Winslow VFW Post 8835.

He is survived by his partner and fiancée of 30 years, Martha (Grindall) Audet; his six children, Ronald Pelletier and wife Ning Sawangjaeng, of Lincolnville, Janice Pelletier and husband Len Kass, of Orono, Karen Pelletier and partner Anu Makynen, of Portland, Mark Pelletier and wife Leslie King Pelletier, of Winslow, Dominic Pelletier and wife Beth Audet Pelletier, of Raymond, and Jeffrey Pelletier and wife Lilly Ampai Chiu Pelletier, of Manhattan Beach, California; 11 grandchildren; two step-children; many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In 1989, Raymond met Martha Audet while working at Scott Paper Company, in Winslow. Raymond became an important part of the lives of Martha’s children: Arlene and David McLean of Winslow, John and Ashley Audet of Winslow, and Beth and Dominic Pelletier; and Martha’s 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Raymond was predeceased by his parents; ex-wife and mother to his six children, Jeanne (Poulin) Pelletier; brothers, Patrick, Rudolph, Gerard, Lucien (Mike), Leopold, Armand, Robert, Joseph (Donald), sisters, Anne Marie Mailloux, Juliette, Cecile Ellis; nephew, Patrick Ellis, and several other nieces and nephews; and daughter-in-law, Nancy (Willey) Pelletier.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, foraging, gardening, driving, traveling, and helping his children and grandchildren with home-building and maintenance. His skills with all things mechanical, as well as his work ethic, both on and off the job, were considered legendary.
