CHARLES KENT

BENTON – Charles Kent, 102, long time town of Benton resident, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. Affectionately known as Charlie, his final days were spent surrounded by family. Spending time with family was Charlies’s favorite thing to do after he retired. He was so proud that he and Nina provided a college education for his four children. He was also very proud of his well rototilled garden and manicured lawn. He loved mowing with his ride-on lawn mower.

Charlie never really retired from 25 years of dairy farming 100 acres of land and milking 80 head of cattle, as he continued selling hay for another ten years and then assisted his youngest son, Dennis, with his hay business by baling every summer, including last summer, and repairing machinery. This was all after 14 years as a diesel locomotive mechanic in the piping department for the Central Maine Railroad (CMRR), in Waterville.

When laid off from the CMRR in the 1940s he worked in the Fairfield Woolen Mill. Early in his work career he was a butcher and ran a meat cart, drove a milk truck for $2/day, pumped 10 gallons gas/$1, worked in the woods and for a man with a portable saw mill and sold wood for $6/cord, worked in a candy factory, picked potatoes and served as Benton Methodist Church janitor, among other odd jobs.

Charlie was born during a pandemic, lived through major agricultural, industrial and societal changes before breathing his last breath during a pandemic. The pop-up toaster, short wave radios, and arc welders were invented in 1919 and Woodrow Wilson was his president. From tilling the land with horses to the use of GPS systems on tractors to plant and harvest huge crops, Charlie has witnessed how technology has changed the efficiency and economics of farming.

Few towns have had the good fortune of having such a dedicated servant as Charles was to his beloved town of Benton. Among his many contributions to the town include serving as its first selectman for 28 years (also assuming the role of overseer of the poor and road commissioner many of these years). During this tenure he established and chaired the town planning board and was a member of the town budget committee.

Among his major accomplishments include initiating construction of the eight room elementary school with gymnasium in 1957 for $95,000, including donations of land, time, equipment and money; replacing 14 wells in 1973 by hooking up a public water line from China Lake to the town with $28,000 of state funding; securing a $100,000 grant and a $100,000 FHA loan when needed to install secondary lines to the main sewer connector lines to complete secondary sewer lines to enable Benton to join the Kennebec Sanitary Treatment District; constructing a salt and sand shed; building a new town hall.

His representation on the State of Maine Grange and Maine Municipal Association legislative committees, while serving two years in the 101st Legislature as the welfare committee chairman, benefitted the townships of Albion, Benton, Clinton, Sidney and Unity greatly. On his 100th birthday, he was recognized as the Honorable Charles C. Kent, Jr., by the 129th Legislature and the people of the State of Maine and extended congratulations and best wishes for his dedicated service in the 101st Legislature. He proudly received the Boston Post Cane in 2014 and was presented an honorary Lawrence High School diploma in 2015.

His civic involvement was extensive with memberships in the Fairfield Lodge of Odd Fellows; Benton and Clinton Methodist Churches; Waterville Elks B.P.O.E #905; Siloam Lodge # 92; Scottish Rite Bodies, Augusta; Maine Consistory 32nd Degree, Portland; Shriners, Lewiston; Benton Grange, master for three years and conductor of the fourth degree; Kennebec Water District Water District trustee, serving several times as its president.

Charles met the love of his life on the dance floor and married Nina Eleanor Bailey on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1941.

He is survived by his sons David (Phyllis) and Dennis (JoAnna) Kent and daughters Ruth (David) Doucette and Eleanor Peavey (Mr. Clair Culver); his four children; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

One of his happiest memories was when over 40 of these special family members attended his 100th birthday party at his winter home in Shady Oaks, in Zephyrhills, Florida.

He is predeceased by his parents, Charles Sr. and Bertha Kent; brothers Bryant (Doris), Plympton (Angelina) and Edward (Pauline) Kent; sister Doris (Odber) Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be observed on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 1 p.m., at the Brown Memorial Church, 36 Church Street, Clinton, ME, 04927 with light refreshments. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery, on the Albion Road, in Benton.

GAYLE H. PINKHAM

WINDSOR – Gayle Hewett Pinkham, 62, passed away at home on Friday, July 9, 2021, following a long courageous battle with cancer. Daughter of Maynard and Gladys Hewett, she was born on March 18, 1959, and grew up in Weeks Mills.

Gayle attended Erskine Academy, in South China, and graduated in 1977. During her four years of high school, she was very active in sports – including field hockey, cheering, and softball – and she excelled in academics and was Salutatorian of her class. She met many of her lifelong friends at Erskine, but most importantly she met her soulmate, Cameron Pinkham.

After high school Gayle attended The University of Maine at Machias and graduated in 1979 with her associate degree. She would later return to school to complete her bachelor’s degree in accounting. Cameron attended Machias with her and after graduating they decided to spend the rest of their lives together and they married later that year on September 8, 1979. Soon after marrying, they moved to Wyoming for a couple years before returning to Windsor to build a house and start a family.

Gayle and Cameron welcomed their first daughter, Melanie, in 1988, and then their second daughter, Michele, in 1991. Gayle was a dedicated mother who loved staying home to raise her daughters. She did it all; extra curriculars, chaperoning field trips, helping with homework, Girl Scout Troop leader, instilling values, and preparing them for the “real world”. She was an exceptional mom.

As her children grew up, she went back to work, part time at first, then eventually full time. She revisited some of her lifelong passions, such as reading, and branched out to other hobbies. She became very physically active and spent years attending fitness classes and enjoyed walking in particular. In her later years she took up knitting, creating beautiful handmade gifts for family and friends. Perhaps her favorite way to relax was to spend sunny summer days at camp, in Pemaquid, sitting by the water with Cameron – oftentimes even bringing their chairs right into the water to sit in the gentle waves.

Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of her life was her three grandchildren, Landon and Kamryn Ritchie, and Efstratia “Tia” Gayle Xamplas.

Gayle is predeceased by her father, Maynard Hewett.

She is survived by her mother, Gladys Hewett, of Windsor; her husband of 42 years, Cameron Pinkham, of Windsor; her two daughters Melanie Ritchie and husband Kyle, of Orrington, and Michele Xamplas and husband Peter, of Australia; three grandchildren: Landon Ritchie, Kamryn Ritchie, and Efstratia Gayle Xamplas; four sisters: Marilyn, Gloria, Joyce, and Brenda; and many nieces and nephews.

ELAINE J. COLLIER

OAKLAND – Elaine Joyce (Bickford) Collier was born in Oakland on May 4, 1938, to Bessie and Earl Bickford, one of five children.

She worked her way through the Williams school system and married the love of her life, Buddy Collier in 1957. Together they shared big dreams. They shared five children together. Growing their family, they spent time traveling the west.

Montana proved to be an intriguing place with promises of mill work and missile silos, but two days before their final return trip in the early ’70s, President Nixon signed a peace treaty eliminating those job opportunities. To think that one stroke of the pen would be what finally determined Maine was where they would keep their family. In 64 years together, what started as two, would turn into 61, nearly a person for every year together. Five children, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Not to mention the countless people she took in as her own.

She spent many happy years working for the Registry of Deeds, in Augusta. She also found great joy later in life working by her daughter’s side at Grower Merchandise Services. She loved to shop whenever she could and was always drawn to the ocean. But in the grand scheme of things, her true passion was always found in her family.

Her favorite holiday was Halloween because it gave her the opportunity to scare all her growing grandchildren and follow it with a chuckle. Simply the best seems the most accurate description for her. A rock. A sounding board for all your troubles. The storm. Pure heart and an everlasting fire for life. She is the reason we are all here. Her fire transcended through the generations and molded us into the beautiful, strong, passionate people we all are today. She was the force that drove the ship, the glue that bound us all together, the one we all strived to be. She was and will always be our guide through every hill and valley this life throws at us.

Every moment she spent here was enjoyed fully with not a second wasted. She ran, she danced, she laughed, cried and sang. She saw the world from cruise ships and gambled until her heart was full. She loved everyone, so strong, with everything she had. There will never be a replacement or a fix for this hole in all our lives that she will leave behind. She would not want us to cry for her, a resounding “I don’t need nothin’,” would have been the directions given. She lived, she loved, and as a family we are all better people for the priceless gifts she has bestowed upon us. She is finally at peace, Big Gram and Gramp, dancing away in Paradise together. This is how she would want to be remembered, smiling, dancing, laughing and loving. She was our light and she will be forever missed by every single person she ever touched.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Buddy Collier; her mother and father, Bessie (Knox) Bickford and Earl Bickford; her brother, Neil Bickford and sister, Janice Dorval.

She is survived by four sons, Chad Collier and his wife Lauralei, Flint Collier and his wife Susan, Nathan Collier and his wife Terri, Cord Collier and his wife Frannie; a daughter, Debbie Smith and her husband Terry; grandchildren Paige Collier and partner Kelsey, Joe Gagnon and wife Julie, Kahlie Desrosiers and husband Josh, Lucas Collier and wife Kristen, Jaimie Gagnon, Matthew Collier and wife Jessica, Kailyn Morlano and husband Joe, Jake Collier and partner Shelby, Alei Collier and fiancé Brandon. Carson Collier, Jennifer Langella and husband Nick, Meaghan Webster and husband Chad, Nikki Cummings and husband Casey, Delaney Collier and partner Jake, Abby Collier and Cassie Smith; great-grandchildren Aiden and Emilyn, Remington and Roanoke, Gracelyn, Madelyn and Joey, Gabby, Raya and Nathan, Charli and Liam, Evelyn and Maelyn, Gunner, Aubri, Lydia, Finn and Barry, River and Clark, Elaine; brothers, Earl Bickford and wife Alice, and Jack Bickford and wife Dorothy;

A celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 10, 3 p.m., at Gram’s home, in Oakland.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, June 10, 2021

PHYLLIS SHIRO

WATERVILLE – Phyllis Shiro, 92, passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2021, following a period of declining health, at MaineGeneral Center for Health, Thayer Campus, in Waterville. She was born Phyllis Ann Kovner, in Brockton, Massachusetts, on November 9, 1928, to Jeanne and Sam Kovner. Phyllis was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, godmother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and friend. She graduated from Brockton High School and the University of New Hampshire, moving to Waterville after meeting Burton Shiro, in Brockton, on a blind date, set up by her sister Lois’s fiancé, a fellow law student of Burton’s at Boston University. Phyllis and Burton became engaged three months after their first meeting, eventually married in 1951, and moved to Waterville where her husband established his law practice. The couple enjoyed nearly 65 years of marriage, marked by travels around the world, wonderfully memorable and numerous family holidays, celebrations, and events, and a treasured 13 summers spent at camp in Smithfield as a family.

Seeing there was no Hebrew school associated with the synagogue upon her arrival in Waterville, she worked with her usual focus and drive to make sure that one was established as quickly as possible. She also worked tirelessly over the years with the B’nai B’rith sisterhood service organization, helping to prepare a variety of holiday meals, as well as planning and executing assorted events and charitable activities.

Phyllis spent many years as a dedicated teacher of remedial reading at the junior high level, taking not only professional but often great personal interest in her students. She went beyond just building their skills in the classroom to building their self-esteem in ways big and small. Arranging complimentary dental work for a particularly self-conscious adolescent was simply one example of her sensitivity to people and generosity of spirit. She believed that when there are those in need, it is often better not to wait to be asked for help but to simply act to deliver it.

Her caring and devoted nature made her a valued member of numerous volunteer teams over the years, including work in patient opinion polling and breast cancer self-examination education at Thayer Hospital. She also relished her work as a docent at the Colby Art Museum and took immense pleasure in studying a variety of great artists and their work. Nothing delighted her more though than guiding groups of children through the galleries, introducing so many to a special, new experience.

Phyllis also worked a number of years in Augusta as a volunteer consumer mediator in the office of the attorney general. Her final volunteer efforts were focused at the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, in Waterville, where she could often be found reading to a child in her lap or happily playing with a group of rambunctious little ones.

Known for her great sense of style, Phyllis had a flair for entertaining and excellent culinary skills which went on public display at Stern’s Department Store where she gave many a cooking demonstration to hungry and grateful audiences. She even ran a small catering business out of her home for a time called P.S. It’s Delicious, featuring some of her most tasty specialties. She took great pride in establishing her home garden and worked with her signature energy to maintain it.

She was an avid reader throughout her life. The combination of her intelligence, wit, grace and humor combined with a special ability to listen without judgment were the qualities that most uniquely marked the way she lived.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Helen Greene and Lois Weinberg, and brother Edward Kovner.

She is survived by her children Louis, Brian, and Leslie Shiro; her grandchildren Zachary and Alexis Shiro; daughter-in-law Donna Shiro; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a sister-in-law.

A private burial service for immediate family will be held on June 1, 2021, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Augusta. A celebration of life will be held at a future date and time to be announced.

You are invited to offer your condolences and share fond memories with the family by visiting Phyllis’ guestbook at http://www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com.

He was a regular communicant of Corpus Christi Parish, in Waterville, serving on two parish committees. Perhaps his favorite organization was the Waterville-Kotlas Sister City Connection, where he served several terms as chairman. Herb taught conversational Russian at its Annual Sampler held at Colby College, finally giving him a chance to use his college major!

Herb was blessed with many interests that contributed to a full and happy life. He and Nancy especially enjoyed gardening together. In college he played competitive bridge, and was proud to have accumulated partial master points while there. He was always ready for a card game, either at the Elks or with Nancy every evening before supper. He liked any kind of puzzle, particularly the New York Times crosswords, which provided him a great deal of enjoyment in his final year. He loved birding, an interest dating back to his Boy Scout days and in his later years, compiled a life-list of nearly 500 species.

He was an inveterate scrapbooker. His research found that through his father he was descended from two governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and through his mother, from two survivors of the Stebbins family who were captured in the Raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704. He belonged to the Taconnet Falls Chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society, and enjoyed many hours working on his family tree.

Traveling was a big part of Herb’s life, and Nancy quickly embraced it. He made over two dozen trips abroad, visiting at least 40 countries, many of those in depth. He once calculated that he had spent almost four years of his life outside the continental United States. Some trips were exciting, like finding himself in Brno, Czechoslovakia, in 1968, when the Russian army briefly invaded that area. (He thought it a bad idea to practice his Russian under those circumstances). But most were pleasurable, especially the six winters he and Nancy spent in Ajijic, Mexico. Often, traveling was combined with birding.

Herb was a passionate and avid hiker, another hold-over from the Boy Scouts. He climbed his first New England 4000’er at the age 12 in 1949, and from then on he was hooked. At the time of his death, he had hiked 600 listed New England peaks and another dozen or so around the world. He hiked all 452 peaks over 3,000 feet in New England (more than half of them bushwhacks) and the 100 highest New England peaks by prominence. He also finished Vermont’s Long Trail from end to end in 2008. He hiked his last peak at the age of 82.

Succumbing to pancreatic cancer in the middle of a global pandemic was not how Herb chose to write the final chapter of his life. Yet, living in a “bubble of two” with Nancy created a certain closeness that’s often missing, even after a long marriage. For 15 months Herb missed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Luckily, due to the lifting of COVID restrictions, he was able to spend his last two weeks with his family. Knowing that he had a very limited time to live gave him the incentive to finish the many scrapbooking projects that he’d been putting off for years. He still considered himself one of the luckiest persons in the world to have experienced all that he did – a wonderful life with Nancy, a family that made him very proud, two careers that he loved, so many interests and the good health to enjoy them for 82 years.

Herb is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sons Benjamin Foster and wife Hope, of Normal, Illinois, and their children, Delano, Olivia Rose and Staeliam Schipper-Reyes; Jeremy and his wife Stefanie, of Topsham, and their children Annie and Sawyer; his stepson, Marc Craig and husband Keju Ma, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; and several cousins.

A funeral Mass will be held at Notre Dame church, 116 Silver St., in Waterville, on Thursday, June 10, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, 70 Grove St., in Waterville, and a reception at the Waterville Elks Lodge.

Condolences may be forwarded to Herb’s family through the Kotlas Connection at P.O. Box 1747, Waterville, ME 04903.

In lieu of donations to one’s favorite charity, Herb would like to see people make the more important donation of time, by volunteering to help organizations which are dedicated to making the world a better place. He would specifically like to see someone volunteer to take his place on the Kotlas Connection board of directors. The Connection, http://www.kotlas.org, is an international organization dedicated to promoting people-to-people diplomacy around the world. Membership is rewarding and often a great deal of fun.

MARY C. FORTIER

WINSLOW – Mary Christine Fortier, 85, of Winslow, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Lakewood Continuing Care, in Waterville. She was born in Winslow on July 24, 1935, the daughter of William and Victoria (Lukaszewicz) Wasiuk.

Mary was proud of her immigrant parents and Polish heritage, and enjoyed the diverse neighborhood off Clinton Avenue, in Winslow, where she grew up with her siblings and began many lifelong friendships and traditions.

She graduated from Winslow High School and Thomas Business College, in Waterville. Mary was employed by Scott Paper Company, in Winslow, where she worked as a secretary in the finishing department. She also served as president of the Office & Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 260. She retired from Scott Paper Company after 37 years of service and proud of the fact that she never missed a day of work. She later worked for several years as a membership specialist at Champions Fitness Center, in Waterville.

She married former husband James Fortier in 1963, and had a son Jon, her only child.

Mary’s beautiful sparkling hazel eyes drew you into her vivacious personality and soul. A sparkle that conveyed a warmth and affection that would put anyone at ease. She loved to be with people and could literally talk up a storm (with some at times finding it necessary to seek shelter). She was also quite the mischievous flirt. On a group trip to Hawaii in the ‘70s, she attended a performance of singer Don Ho and managed to sneak onto the stage and plant a kiss on the crooner, announcing triumphantly “This one’s from Maine!”. Just an example of a gregarious behavior she displayed throughout her life.

Where there’s bright lights and excitement, there’s people…and, of course, there’s Mary! She was an ardent fan of the local casinos and enjoyed playing the slots. Mary had a circle of friends with whom she would share rides to Bangor and Oxford and rarely missed a bus trip to Foxwoods, in Connecticut. Win or lose, it was always a story of how much fun she had with her friends. She also enjoyed visiting friends and family out of state, taking numerous cruises, trips to Las Vegas, as well as a cross country RV trip she took with friends for an entire summer.

Although Mary had no grandchildren, she was very fond of her nieces and nephews and their children. She loved a good bargain and always on the search for gifts to send off to them all…and she expected pictures! When she did get them, the excitement and smile on her face was nothing less than priceless.

Without question, the pride and joy of her life was her son Jon, whom she raised as a single parent. Her proudest day was when she reunited with siblings and family to attend his graduation from Maine Maritime Academy.

She was a devout Catholic and an Associate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. She visited many people in nursing homes and folks who may have been shut ins. She valued character and had a love for those who were less fortunate.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; brother Stan, sisters Evelyn and Judy.

She is survived by son Jon; sister Pauline; nephews Dan and Jay, nieces Angela and Cari and their children.

A Mass will be held on Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 26 Monument Street, in Winslow. A celebration of life will follow at the Best Western Plus Waterville Grand Hotel, 375 Main St., in Waterville. Private burial will be held at a later date.

CONSTANCE G. THERIAULT

CHINA – Constance G. (Bernier) Theriault, 81, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021. She was born in Portland, February 25, 1935.

She was the oldest of nine siblings and grew up on King Street, in Westbrook, where many stories have been told pertaining to that address. From there she met and married Joseph S. Theriault on August 27, 1955.

She left Westbrook in 1955 with her new husband and headed for Michigan. After two years they ventured south to Delaware, Ohio, and after a short ten months, again moved north about 100 miles, to Castalia, Ohio.

In 1960 Joseph and Constance bought their first house in Castalia and began yearly trips to Maine with their family. Keep in mind this young woman with four boys in 1962 had to come to Maine and her husband couldn’t leave work. She hopped in their 1962 Chevy II with two of the boys and headed 850 miles east. She made it there and back, and before moving back to Maine eight years later, she made at least six trips all by herself, she was very gutsy. In 1970 they moved back to Maine and it was her job to find a place to live. So every day she and the children would leave her mother’s house in Westbrook and traveled the state looking for a house to buy. After two months she found a house to be finished in China on a three-mile dirt road, 100 miles from nowhere – as thought by all the relatives.

She had many jobs throughout her life, in Ohio she worked at many doctors’ offices through Joseph’s contacts at the hospital. She liked working but loved her boys (they were her angels). One of her favorite stories was when the family moved back to Maine, and she went to work at Thayer Hospital, in Waterville, and was working for the original Dr. Hawkeye Pierce from M*A*S*H, Dr. Richard Hornberger, that blew her mind. After working there a few years she took some time off and they moved to Millinocket for a couple of years, and then back to China. She got bored and got a job at Unum, in Portland, which meant a lot of traveling, but she loved it and stayed there until she retired.

After they retired, they became snowbirds and lived the good life of “warm in summers of Maine and warm in the winters of Florida” They did this for about 20 years until health issues in 2018 forced them to move back to Maine.

Constance was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Joseph S. Theriault; her two youngest sons, Steven D. Theriault, and Michael S. Theriault; her parents; and four of her siblings.

She is survived by her two oldest sons Gregory I. Theriault and his wife Rebecca, and Timothy S. Theriault and his wife Rebecca, all of China; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of life at the Waterville Elks Banquet Center, 76 Industrial St., in Waterville, on Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. All are welcome to share their stories.

He grew up in Albion and graduated from Lawrence High School, in Fairfield.

Donald was employed by the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, Local Union #1468, District Council #35, and traveled all over the country painting commercial buildings and nuclear power plants.

Donald enjoyed hunting with Daryl, fishing with Victor, had a green thumb for gardening and loved playing cribbage. He especially was fond of NASCAR races and an avid fan of race car driver Kyle Busch. He looked forward to the races and bantered with Justin about who was the best driver and who would win. Don loved Burger King and enjoyed eating a Whopper with his mother-in-law Rose, after driving her to her medical appointments. Even though Don’s brother Dean was much younger than him, they loved spending time together, talking and laughing about hunting trips, friends and family.

He married the former Kathy Jean (Pelotte) Hotham, on July 8, 2000. Together they honeymooned at Niagara Falls, New York, and the Poconos. They traveled to Jamaica several times, and to many destinations in Florida, including Key West and Busch Gardens, amongst other places. They were recently planning to return to the Caribbean to renew their marriage vows, together with close family members. While traveling to various destinations, Don and Kathy enjoyed tailgating with his truck and eating their favorite barbecued foods. At the end, Donald surprised his nurses with his brave fight to survive.

Don nicknamed Kathy “Toots” and she affectionately called him her “Donny Boy”. They were never far from each other and enjoyed every minute together. They cherished packing a picnic basket and going to the ocean to eat lobster to enjoy the smells of the ocean and the warmth of the sun. Don especially loved playing and spending time with his grandchildren and was so proud of each one of them. For Christmases for their first five years, he gifted them with a piggy bank containing money for future savings.

He had a special affection for his granddaughter Emily Fortin, and recently helped her purchase her first car. Together they laughed and joked as she has progressed into a beautiful young lady. Don loved his granddaughter Haley and was looking forward to her graduation from high school this spring. He is also survived by grandchildren Audric and Taylor Elkins. When Audric visited for the weekends, he would run into the living room and jump on Donny and shower him with kisses and hugs. Audric loved having Papa Don give him rides on Big Red the tractor. He considered Taylor his special little princess. Garrett Pelletier was also happy to visit Papa and knew where his stashes of candy and goodies were. He was also ecstatic this year, in meeting River and sharing candy and getting to know her.

FRANCES ROY

WINSLOW – Frances (Rafferty) Roy, 94, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020, at her home. Fran was born in Bangor in 1926, the only daughter of Francis Xavier Rafferty and Emma (Nina) L. Rafferty.

Fran was very proud of her French-Irish Catholic heritage.

Fran attended schools in Bangor before moving to Fairfield where she attended Lawrence High School. She remained active on committees for class reunions over the years. After graduation, she began her nursing career and training via a World War II program, enrolling in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, at Sister’s Hospital, in Waterville. Part of Fran’s training occurred at other sites, including Children’s Hospital, in Portland, Brady Maternity Hospital, in Albany, New York, and hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland, that covered psychiatry and pediatrics. Upon graduating as a Registered Nurse, Fran became the lead nurse for various companies in Maine and Connecticut, including C.F. Hathaway Shirt Co., in Waterville, and G. Fox Department Store; and then as an I.V. Team nurse and Nurse Supervisor at Hartford Hospital.

Fran returned to Maine and to Sister’s Hospital, in Waterville, as the 1960s approached and became the Assistant Head Nurse of the Medical-Surgical Unit. She worked in the Vaccine Clinic when the new polio vaccine was developed. Fran quickly became head nurse on the Obstetrical Unit and assisted on many committees. She was chairman of the Employee Campaign to raise funds for the new Seton Hospital, in Waterville, and arranged many fundraisers. For several years, Fran helped coordinate the hospital Christmas parties that were held for all employees and physicians, and she later became chairman of the Auxiliary Charity Balls.

Fran worked in all areas of the hospital over the course of her outstanding career, overseeing various departments as the hospital went through its many changes. She was deeply involved when Seton and Thayer hospitals merged to become Mid-Maine Medical Center, in Waterville. She oversaw the Emergency Department for many years. She was very perceptive and one always knew where he or she stood as Fran did not often “mince words.” She was highly organized and strove for excellence and perfection in both her work and home lives.

In the early 1980s, Fran was promoted to Vice President of Nursing for MMMC until her retirement at the end of the decade. During that span, she was honored many times for her insight and hard work throughout the hospital and for her commitment to the highest standards, successfully leading the hospital through three Joint Commission Surveys.

Always active, in her retirement years, Fran engaged with the Muskie Community Center, in Waterville, and ran monthly blood pressure clinics. She received many awards, among them the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Fran joined the Waterville and Fairfield bridge clubs and became an avid and formidable player, winning a few championships for fun. Continuing to learn constantly, she was unrelenting in her grasp for knowledge. She was also an ardent believer in living healthy with exercise and a proper diet. Fran continued to share her nursing and hospital management knowledge, consulting at Kennebec Valley Technical College, in Fairfield, and Penn Bay Medical Center, in Rockland.

Fran was blessed with a keen eye for style which she claimed was from her mother’s influence as a buyer for high-end stores wherein she traveled frequently to Boston and New York. Fran was a “classy dame” with confidence and a sense of fearlessness about her. She loved the Coast of Maine, any beach she could lay on, and lobster of any kind. Her biggest enjoyments were watching and talking sports, especially basketball, football and tennis; and her trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas and Walt Disney World, which she enjoyed with her family and friends.

Fran is survived by her daughters Deborah Benton, of Nevada, and Jane Roy, of New York, New York; granddaughter Joy Beckerman, of Seattle, Washington; two great-grandsons, Phoenix and Spiral Horn, both of Seattle, Washington, and niece Janis Pollitt, of Virginia.

Fran was predeceased by her parents and by her beloved brother Andrew “Red” Rafferty. She missed her brother terribly but is now reunited with him.
