ALBERT J. DUGUAY

FAIRFIELD – Albert Joseph Duguay, 96, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022. He was the third child, born of 13, to John Baptist and Anne (Joseph) Duguay, on February 28, 1926.

Leaving high school to serve his country, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. Upon an honorable discharge he came home and married Antoinette Turmelle on October 28, 1950. Together they had six children.

Al was a communicate of Corpus Christi Parish, in Waterville, Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Fairfield, and St. John the Baptist, in Winslow. Church. Al was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus #11303, Bourque-Lanigan American Legion Post #5, in Waterville, Blessed Sacrament Board of Trustee, etc.

He went back to earn his high school diploma at the age of 66 and continued on to take college classes at the University of Maine Augusta. He stressed education to all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was employed by the union in construction for many years and retired from the United States Postal Service in 1984.

Al had many “self-taught skills”; carpenter, plumber, electrician, car mechanic, painter, roofer, chauffeur, gardener, cook, guitar player, and writer. He rebuilt a homestead wall by wall and with continual upkeep, for over 70 years, maintained its beauty. He had many projects always going, so when he couldn’t find the right tool or nail he’d head down to the basement because he knew he had all of these items somewhere… In a box!

Since the lottery began he would buy his Mega-Million and Power ball tickets, no frills, faithfully. He said if he ever won, he would make sure any child’s college education would be paid for. As being one of the oldest sons, he made sure part of his service check went to his mother, to help with all his siblings. He loved to jump in his car, pick up blueberry and cream filled donuts from Hillman’s Bakery, in Fairfield, and make his rounds seeing his favorite people in town to share a donut and a story.

He loved all God’s creatures, building hotels and gardens for the birds in his backyard. He would whistle many bird calls swinging on his deck swing.

Back in the day he was a very good athlete and played semi-pro football, he loved to drive the “green hornet”, and loved to go dancing. There were always gatherings of family and friends, music, food, and laughter in the house. The door was always open and was a safe and warm place for anyone that entered.

Not only was he a devout Catholic but a devout and proud veteran and Democrat! A thrill was when him and mom went to John F. Kennedy’s and Bill Clinton’s conventions. He loved debates and was an advocate for his fellow union members and would travel anywhere to make sure their voices where being heard. We believe that is what kept him alive!

Al was involved in community projects. Working alongside his fellow knights on fish chowder night, basketball shoot fundraisers, helping to organize the painting of the town’s fire hydrants, building the park gazebo, ringing of the bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army, to handing out poppies on Remembrance Day, to name just a few. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Don (Lillian), Eddie, Omar, Babe (Norma), sisters Evelyn Morneau (Leo), Jean Carey (Harold), Van Peters (Lee), B-I-L; Chip Plant, Bob Turmelle (Dot); S-I-L: Katherine Duguay, Cecile Gagnon, Judith Turmelle; and great-grandson Nathan.

He is survived by his wife, Toni of 71 years; five daughters, Vicki Goodwin (Steven), of Buxton, Patricia Dustin (Gary), of Waterville, Laurie Byrne (Jim), of Winslow, Leslie DuVall, of Winslow, Melodie Furbush (Randy), of Oakland; one son, Michael Duguay (Victoria), of Waterville; grandchildren, Barret Fortier (Bill), Travis Dustin (Sarah), Brooke Dillon, Cierra McLaughlin (Michael), Taylor Byrne (Sarah), Adam DuVall (Justine), Lindsey Nichols (Nate), Katie Furbush, Chad Furbush (Kristina), Kirt Furbush (Melissa), Sage Chartier (Justin), Chase Duguay; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Sam, Quinn Fortier; Riley, Joshua, Rianne Dustin; Nealey, Baylee Dillon; Kalli, Kendall, Cameron DuVall; Alexis Gibson, Anthony Sproul; Sawyer, Evelynn Byrne; Dominique Furbush, Joshua Zinkovitch; and great-great grandson Mason Lambert; his brothers, Joseph, John (Nancy), Larry (Faye) and sisters, Theresa Plant, Lorraine Reny (Don), S-I-L, Julie Thomas, Jeanette Michaud; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Baptist Church, 26 Monument Street, Winslow, ME, to be celebrated on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow. EVAN A. KLANE

FAIRFIELD – Evan Andrew Klane, 31, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022, at his home. He was known as “the boy/man who outlived” all expectations.

Well known as his mother’s “Beautiful Boy”, her “Celtic Warrior”, Evan was born under a remarkable full moon on September 4, 1990, coming into his earthly world quietly, but fighting for his life.

Despite his lifelong disabilities, chronic and sometimes life-threatening illnesses, Evan defied the NICU staff predictions of not living to see a first birthday by going on to live for over three decades. Evan was known for his tenacity and fighting spirit, but a pure sweetness complemented his “tough guy” image. Evan’s joyful smile could light up the room, especially when something tickled that wicked funny bone of his, or whenever he would hear his beloved brother Ian tearing around the house as a little guy, or at Ian’s “Hey, Bud, I miss you, love you” each time Ian would call from his current home in Arizona.

Evan also enjoyed the many stories his dad, Jonathan, would read to him each week bringing a joyful connection as they shared a passion for the original Brother’s Grimm’s Children’s and Household Tales. Evan’s life had a profoundly positive impact on everyone with whom he came in contact.

As a graduate of the class of 2009 from Lawrence High School (MSAD #49), in Fairfield, Evan was a teacher as much as he was a student K through 12, as he taught empathy, compassion, perseverance, acceptance, tolerance, but most of all, love.

Evan was predeceased by maternal grandparents Charles “Grampy” and Lorraine “Grammie” McCallum, of Massachusetts, and paternal grandparents Keith “Grandpa” and Ethel “Nana” Klane, of Massachusetts. He is survived by his mother Deborah MacCallum Klane, of Fairfield; his father Jonathan Klane, of Mesa, Arizona; brother Ian MacCallum Klane (partner Ashley Mendola); maternal family Auntie Diana, Uncle George, and Cam Burke; Uncle Doug and Auntie Diana McCallum, and Uncle Dickie McCallum; paternal family Auntie Leslie and Uncle Ralph Brogna, Uncle Larry Klane; cousins, Bob, Jeff, Chris, Lisa and their families; and extended family Godmother Kathy Jason and her family and Jan Isbell.

LIONEL POLIQUIN

BRUNSWICK – Lionel “Lee” Poliquin, 91, passed away quietly in his sleep, on Monday morning March 14, 2022. He was the son of Lionel Poliquin, Sr., of Lewiston, and Helen Bouchard Poliquin, originally from Aroostook County.

Lee was born and raised in Waterville along with his wife Esther Louise “Lou” to whom he was dedicated for 72 years. He was an enthusiastic and skilled basketball and baseball player at St. John’s Preparatory School, in Danvers, Massachusetts, and then Colby College, in Waterville.

After graduating, Lee began 30 years of teaching and coaching Central Maine youngsters in Hartland, Corinna, Belgrade and Waterville, where his seventh grade social studies class was legendary. His playful humor kept students on their toes; his genuine concern for their well-being made special connections with many who struggled through school. At South Grammar Elementary School, in Waterville, Principal Lee Poliquin quietly marshaled volunteers to prepare breakfast for children arriving at school hungry before such programs existed.

For 35 enjoyable years, Lee traveled the state encouraging countless high school athletes as a colorful basketball official while sharing his affection for the game. He coached his two sons, Jim and Bruce, on the mighty Levine’s Little League team, at Lockwood Park, across from the former Hathaway Shirt factory, in Waterville. Coach Poliquin used organized sports to teach hundreds of Central Maine youth the lessons of hard work, fair play and having fun.

Always the busy entrepreneur, during summers he sold life insurance and operated Lee’s Lobster Pound, on Madison Avenue, in Skowhegan. After retiring from teaching and coaching, Lee became an early morning round table fixture at John’s Market, on Western Avenue, in Waterville, playfully jousting about current events in Maine and beyond.

In 1990, his only grandchild Sam arrived who immediately became the light of his and Lou’s life. Papa and Sam grew together with an everlasting bond of pure love and joy. Lee patiently taught Sam the gentleman’s game of cribbage and then was outfoxed during their “tournaments” over the ensuing 20 years.

Throughout his life, Lee was a proud and devoted Franco-American Catholic who always looked out for the little guy. He gave his life to the Lord, to his family, and to the betterment of a generation of deserving Central Maine boys and girls. His dry and frisky humor brightened the days of all who shared his company. Sadly, our world is a little less cheerful without Lee Poliquin around.

He is survived by his wife Louise; grandson Sam; younger son Bruce; sister Anne Laliberte; and a number of nieces and nephews.

His older son Jim passed away some years ago.

There will likely be a memorial service in Waterville this summer.

OBITUARIES for Thursday, March 31, 2022

EMERLINE P. BARTLEY

SHAWMUT – Emerline Pearl (Gurney) Bartley, 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022, following a short illness. Born on August 7, 1926, to Otis A. and Gelie M. Gurney, she grew up and remained a lifelong resident of Shawmut.

She attended Fairfield schools, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1945.

She became employed at the Keyes Fibre Company’s Shawmut Pulp Mill, in 1946, where she met and avoided the persistent advances of Eldon Bartley for quite a while until her twin sister Earline stepped in and told her that he was not going to keep asking her out forever. Earline demanded that she say ‘yes’ the next time he asked her out, and then she told Eldon to go tell Emmie what time he was picking her up, and that was that. Emerline and Eldon were married on April 24, 1948. They celebrated 66 years together before Eldon’s passing in June 2014.

Emmie worked for Keyes Fibre (now Huhtamaki) from 1946 until her retirement in 1988. She was a long-time member of the Shawmut Chapel, a 50-year member of the Goodwill Rebekah Lodge and long-time volunteer with her sister Earline and their husbands at the Fairfield Food Pantry and at Good Will-Hinckley’s Festival of Trees.

Together, she and Eldon enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, bowling, and any time spent at their camp in Mud Cove, on Moosehead Lake, in Greenville. Although she would go out fishing on the lake, her favorite fishing spot was Prong Pond where she spent hours with her great friends Florence and Bobby Decker. Emmie did not care what kind of fish she caught, she just liked catching fish. She also enjoyed time in the sky flying with Eldon in his Piper Cub Plane.

She was a favorite aunt to many of her nieces and nephews, and they hold cherished memories of time spent with her skating on the Kennebec River or walking down the train tracks to Black Stream where many hours were spent on the ice. The Skowhegan State Fair was a favorite yearly outing, as well as any quick trips for an ice cream. Holiday gatherings were always extra special because Aunt Emerline spent all her time playing games with the kids.

You couldn’t go visit Aunt Emerline and not walk away with at least a $5 bill tucked in your pocket, rather you knew it was put there or you surprisingly found it later. Her home was a safe and loving space, and visits were filled with a lot of laughter, a good card game, and the insistence that you have something sweet to eat.

Emerline was predeceased by her husband, Eldon Bartley; her parents Otis and Gelie (Peavey) Gurney; her brother Omar Gurney, sisters Ruby Harding and Christine Beaulieu, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law on both sides.

Caroline loved being a preschool teacher for several years at Northeast Christian Academy and A Joyful Noise Christian Daycare and Learning Center, in Windham. She also enjoyed meeting a wide array of people during her time of being self-employed. Her conversations with them would often lead to her sharing a word of encouragement, advice, or a much-welcomed prayer. She was loved by all who knew her.

Caroline had a strong faith in God and was an active church member at several churches throughout her life including Windham Church of God, Farmer’s Church, and recently attended First UPC, in Augusta. Over the years, she played the piano and led worship with her beautiful voice.

BROOKE A. McGOWAN-TALBOT

WATERVILLE – Brooke Ann McGowan Talbot, 39, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022. She was born September 27, 1982.

Brooke left the world in much the same way she lived in it, with unmatched fight and determination. It was a fitting way to spend her last moments, because everyone who knew Brooke knew that the most important things to her were loyalty and love.

Her family was the love of her life. Being an aunt was where Brooke felt most fulfilled. Her niece and nephews talked to her several times a day, giggling, joking, and reveling in each other’s love. Her laugh and her ‘snuddles’ will be most missed by auntie’s boys who were so dearly loved by her as her own children.

Meeting Brooke for the first time could be described as both comfortable and disorienting in a sense that it felt so natural. She never met a stranger and magnetically pulled everyone together. Brooke had a way of connecting us all.

She was sparkly and warm, always with open arms, a listening ear, and easy words of comfort. If you ever needed anything, you could call on Brooke. She was calm and knew how to solve a crisis if it involved someone she loved. So many of the people who have reached out to give their condolences have mentioned her laugh, light, and how she was always there for them.

She loved food that came with vacation and the sunshine on her skin. She sunburned easily and she was always trying something new at fancy restaurants. However, Brooke could just as easily settle in with hotel slippers.

Brooke was an incredibly driven and hard worker and felt such fulfillment with her team’s continued success at T-Mobile. She was like a proud mom of the people she mentored so diligently and watching them grow individually was one of her biggest joys.

During the summers, you could always find her in the sunshine. She loved to swim at her in-law’s house with her beloved pups, Penny and Lucy, always nearby. If it was hot, Brooke was poolside without a worry in the world.

A fierce family, dog, work, sports, and travel lover, Brooke was everyone’s favorite girl, and could find something in common with anyone. The world moving forward is a bit darker and quieter without her infectious laugh, bright smile, encompassing hugs, and thoughtful conversation.

She put herself last, caring for others not because she had to, but because that’s what made her happy.

And that, in the end, is who Brooke was.

She is survived by her parents Eileen Wright and Matt and Julie McGowan; husband Jonathan Talbot; brother Lucas McGowan, his wife Ann, and their three kids, Colby, Durham, and Ellis McGowan; her in-laws Mike and Cindy Talbot; so many aunts, uncles, cousins.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

He earned many accolades through his athletic and academic career, including Boy’s State during his high school years. Tony was humbled to be inducted into the Waterville Sports Hall of Fame a few years back.

Tony married the love of his life, Kelly, in 1985 and together they had a son Kristafer Jon in 1986. They just celebrated their 37th year of marriage on February 15, 2022, when they were vacationing in Florida.

Tony had many options, but his career really kicked off in 1981 when he fell in love with the wine industry and traveled to many countries to perfect his craft. Walker, Inc. of Somerville, Massachusetts, as a regional director of sales for Maine and Vermont, where he had a long successful career, retiring in 2014.

Family always came first. Any free time Tony had was invested in family. We don’t remember Tony missing any of the kid’s ball games or other important events; in fact, he coached or helped to coach most of the teams they played on from kindergarten through high school. Tony loved family vacations; however, he most loved being home and tending to the property and creating an inviting space for friends and family to visit often.

Tony enjoyed every minute of life and had a heartwarming sense of humor right up until the end. He impacted many lives all over this community and across many other countries. He was always available to his friends; willing to give rides or a helping hand any time, day or night.

Tony will be greatly missed. He loved people in a big way, and he loved Jesus. Tony attended Kennebec Valley Baptist Church, on Marston Road, in Waterville, for over 20 years. During that time, he made many friends, especially, Pastor Dr. Kevin Grant. They had a special bond that Tony cherished.

LOUISE G. BOULET

WATERVILLE – Louise Giguere Boulet, 75, died on Thursday, March 10, 2022, following a brief Illness. She was born June 28, 1946, in Waterville to Joseph L. and Marie Louise Giguere, a late addition to her proud, Franco-American household.

Louise was educated at Mount Merici Academy, in Waterville, an experience she would later recall with mixed emotions. She worked during her younger years as a telephone operator and had many stories to tell about her experiences there. She was also a graduate of the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics.

As a young, not-yet-independent adult, Louise found herself expecting a baby out of wedlock. As was common at the time, she spent time in a convent until giving birth to a baby boy who was subsequently adopted into a loving family. While a much better outcome for the baby, the experience marked Louise forever.

Resuming life in her native Waterville, she met the love of her life, an ambitious, first generation immigrant from Québec, Jean-Louis Boulet. This was followed by years of moves from Waterville to Oakland, St. Aurelie, QC, St. Prosper, QC, finally back to Winslow to raise her three children on familiar ground. In addition to raising a family, Louise helped John launch several businesses, including Mainely Trusses, in Fairfield.

A gifted seamstress, Louise’s passions were quilting and family. She made countless blankets for relatives (which she called “hugs”), wall hangings, place mats, etc. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling to quilting conventions at which she sold quilt kits under the name, Great Pond Quilts. She was an active member of various quilting clubs and was happiest when relaxing at camp with her family.

Louise was predeceased by her parents and husband, Jean-Louis “John” Boulet, and her second husband, Paul MacFawn.

She is survived by her older siblings, Leandre Giguere, of West Brookfield, Massachusetts, Jacqui Marr, of Gorham; sister-in-law, Jackie Boulet, and her children, Michael and Jody Boulet, of Palermo, Richard and Cheryl Boulet, of Blue Hill, and Tricia Boulet and Merrill Lamont, of Medford, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Sophie, Yanic and Zane Boulet, Joseph and Marie Louise Boulet, and Zephyr Lamont; many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all mutually descended from the sprawling family tree resulting from her father’s 21 siblings who immigrated to Waterville in the 1920s.

As was her preference, there will be no funeral service. Family and friends are invited to attend a brief graveside prayer said for Louise at Saint Francis Cemetery, Grove St., Waterville, on July 1 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that you consider a donation in Louise’s memory to Sunset Home, http://www.sunsethomeofwaterville.me. Or simply think of Louise as you do something that flaunts convention just a little bit, anything that might raise a nun’s eyebrow.

SKOWHEGAN – Warren Cunningham Shay, 72, died on Monday, February 21, 2022, while snorkeling with his family in the Galapagos Islands. He would have celebrated his 73rd birthday eight days later on March 1, 2022. The son of the late Robert and Esther Shay, Warren was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, and spent his childhood growing up in Orono, where his father was a professor.

An avid outdoorsman, he also was a pillar of the community, family man and wonderful storyteller.

The family moved to Scarsdale, New York, in 1960, where his mother had grown up, graduating from Scarsdale High School in 1967. He attended the University of Maine, where he met his future wife, Jeanne Fortin, played varsity tennis, captaining the team his senior year, and in 1971 graduated Phi Beta Kappa. That summer Jeanne and Warren were married in Waterville, Jeanne’s hometown. The couple returned to Maine after three years in Boston, where Warren earned his law degree at Boston University.

He soon joined the law firm that became Perkins, Townsend & Shay, in Skowhegan. Warren’s qualities of honesty and forthrightness as a lawyer were greatly valued as he became involved in Skowhegan’s civic life. Warren was elected selectman in 1982 and chaired the select board from 1984 to 1994. Throughout his life he served on the boards of many Skowhegan organizations including the Skowhegan Savings Bank, the Lake George Regional Park, Bloomfield Academy, the Skowhegan Rotary, the Somerset Woods trust and was a supporter of Main Street Skowhegan.

In addition to his private clients, Warren served as the town attorney for Skowhegan and the county attorney for Somerset County and was a member of the Board of Governors of the Maine State Bar Association. As a true country lawyer Warren handled a wide range of legal cases, including commercial disputes, personal injury and criminal cases. However, his favorite cases were timber trespass disputes, an important area of law in this part of Maine.

While his legal and community work was important, Warren’s greatest joy came from his wife Jeanne and their children, Anthony and Laura. Warren enjoyed watching them play sports from grade school through college, and after as Laura’s rugby career continued with Beantown RFC, Boston’s premier woman’s rugby club. Perhaps most of all he enjoyed being outdoors in nature.

He and his friend, Barry Norling, would hike most weekends in the mountains of Western Maine and New Hampshire, and when there was snow, they would cross country ski. He also was an active kayaker, running white water in Maine’s great rivers when he was younger, and in the waters around Mt. Desert near the Shay family summer house on Oak Point, in Trenton. During the summer at Oak Point he and his family loved to hike the mountains of Mt. Desert, play tennis and golf, often with his brothers, Bob and Steve and their families, as well as with his Cunningham cousins.

There were always lively multi-family dinners with family and Oak Point neighbors and quiet times reading in the sun on the deck while enjoying the beautiful views over Western Bay. Warren and Jeanne were also active travelers, which began with a six-week honeymoon in Europe. They visited numerous national parks and went to Club Med with Anthony and Laura when they were younger. They also frequently returned to Europe recently taking multi-day hiking trips around Mt. Blanc and on country trails in Scotland with family and friends.

Beyond his many accomplishments, Warren will best be remembered by his family and many friends for his great sense of humor, his way with people, his “can do” approach to life and his patience and generosity.

He attended Williams High School, in Oakland, where Bern was raised. He often told of being picked up by a wagon to go to school each day. Bern graduated high school in 1939 and was soon after drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas as a machine gun instructor. Little did Bern know that Texas would change his life forever, when he walked into the Five and Dime store, where he met his Million Dollar Baby, Annie Rose Ratliff.

Bern was a man of many hats. After being discharge from the Army he learned the craft of a watch maker. While working at this job he traded a $15 watch for a 15-acre parcel of land in Smithfield. A few years later, the Maine woods began calling his name, so he went on to become cruiser to run lines and scale wood for Diamond Match Company, of Oakland. Later years, when his daughter, Virginia, was born he decided that he wanted to be closer to home. He then became an auto body/mechanic for Pullen Ford, in Oakland. That is where he bought right off the car carrier, a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible and a 1969 Ford Ranger that are still in the family in their original state to this day. In 1979, Bern heard of a night watchman / boiler operator position for Cascade Woolen Mill, in Oakland, where he worked until retirement at the age of 75.

In 1961, with great pride, Bern joined the Masons Messalonskee Lodge #113. As well as the Masons, Bern had many other interests. He spent many hours with his family, hunting and exploring the state brook fishing. One of Bern’s proudest accomplishments was this past fall when he shot a 170-pound, 6-point buck, making him Maine’s oldest person to harvest a deer in state.

DONALD T. DESCHAINE

WINSLOW – Donald T. Deschaine, 89, passed away at home on Tuessday, February 15, 2022.

Don was born in Millinocket on January 12, 1933, the son of Pierre “Ned” and Leona Deschaine. Moving to Waterville at a young age, he attended St. Francis de Sales Elementary School, then Waterville High School, graduating in 1950. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Army in 1953, serving his country well during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return from Korea, he married Joan in May 1956 , and soon began his career at Laverdiere’s Super Drug stores, where he worked his way up from one of their very first store managers to become senior vice president of operations, and a member of the company’s executive board.

With his strong work ethic and great dedication to the company, he was known as a firm, but kind and inspirational leader to countless numbers of employees, as he helped guide the company to its full contingent of 72 stores before the company’s sale to Rite Aid in 1994.

While Don’s professional career was marked with great success, there was nothing as important to him as the time he spent with his family. From weekly ski trips to Sugarloaf and Saddleback mountains when Cindy and Randy were young, to his years owning a camp at China Lake, and finally to his winters in Naples, Florida, being surrounded by his family and good friends is what made Don the happiest. Whether it was a walk to the beach, riding his bike, or a round on the golf course, he graciously welcomed all friends, old and new, along his life’s journey. Everyone left Don with a smile, and a better outlook on life.

His swift inclusion of his daughter-in-law Cathi, and son-in-law, Bill, to the family was also one of good cheer and great kindness. Don was truly a member of the “Greatest Generation,” resourceful and capable in so many ways.

His gardens were legendary, producing bushels of vegetables every year. He taught himself all manners of home repair, and he would so generously share his talents with his children’s families as well. To Don, there was nothing that couldn’t be fixed, repaired, or renewed without some ingenuity and creativity.

No mention of Don’s life would be complete without noting his enduring, life-long love for Joan. Over 65 years of marriage, through highs and lows, adventures, and quiet times, she was always his sweetheart, and she certainly always will be.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan (Vigue); his daughter Cynthia (Bill), his son Randall (Cathi); his four grandchildren, Lauren and Matthew Engel, of Massachusetts, Candice Deschaine Christian (Adam) and Hayley Deschaine Cohen (Bryan), of North Carolina. Don also received a wonderful visit from his one-year old great-granddaughter, Emily Addison Christian, just one week before his passing; his brother Roland (Vernette), and sisters Gloria Gamache, of Kansas, and Theresa Perkins, of Connecticut; brother Claude passed away in 2019, survived by his wife Gladys.

WATERVILLE – Reginald A. Ferran, 40, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 22, 2022, from an accident at his home, in Waterville. He was born, in Waterville, on February 15,1981, to Reggie and Judy Ferran.

Being raised in Winslow until the age of eight and then moving to China, he had attended both Winslow and China Elementary and then graduating from Waterville High School.

Reggie worked at J&S oil gas station as a teenager, then moving on to being a subcontractor for a small Satellite Company, in Winslow. Working endless jobs to find his life career, Uncle Bo Ferran stepped in and hired him to work for Granite Corp., of Oakland, where he trained to become an HVAC technician. He was considered a “Mastermind” as an HVAC technician.

In 2008, Reggie became a daddy to his first child; a daughter, Delana Teresa and then in 2010, he had a son, Layne Albert.

The one thing “Coona” loved more than his career was being a dad to his babies. He had many plans for both of his children and their future. He was so proud of his accomplishments, buying his first house in 2011. He enjoyed the simple life; gardening in his back yard, camping, hiking and just taking rides, to view the scenery around China Lake.

He had a purpose in this world, and it was to touch the lives of anyone who met him. Even though, he also had that sarcastic way about him, if he made fun of you and totally insulted you, it was because he truly liked you. A total boundary stepper, but he did it all in good fun, and would laugh at his own jokes, which in turn, you couldn’t help but laugh, too, even if you didn’t understand the joke.

Reggie was predeceased by his parents, Reggie and Judy Ferran; his paternal grandparents, Albert and Theresa Ferran; and uncles, Charles Coolbroth, Michael Herring and Jerry Herring.

He is survived by his two children, Delana and Layne Ferran; his two sisters, Danette Hotham, of China, and Jaimie Thomas, of Augusta; three nieces, Britany Pelletier, of Sidney, Hannah Whitaker, of Augusta, Alicia Hotham, of China; two nephews, Anthony Hotham, of Windsor, and Kaleb Thomas, of Augusta; two great-nephews, Levi Hotham and baby Jax Pelletier; and a “stepdad” Craig Taylor.

A celebration of the life of Reggie “Coona” Ferran will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the MacCrillis-Rousseau VFW Post #8835, in Winslow, from 2 – 6 p.m. The buffet will be set up at 4 p.m., where the family will take that time to give anyone who would like to tell stories of their experiences with Reggie, that opportunity. The cash bar will be open downstairs and can be paid for and then brought up to the event hall, but no outside liquor of any kind is permitted. If you have a favorite band T-shirt, please wear it, as he was a Rock/metal enthusiast.

Bob Derosby went on to open Valor Enterprise, Inc., a small business that provided the government and military with various items, such as clocks, plaques, coins, and trophies. Finally, after 25 years, Bob retired due to ill health, though he couldn’t sit still. So he came out of retirement to work for Northeast Labs, in Winslow, finally retiring for good at the age of 80.

JAMES F. DUDLEY

SIDNEY – James Frederick Dudley, 72, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Alfond Center for Health, in Augusta. Jimmy was born in Augusta on January 27, 1950, the youngest son of Robert Alton and Beulah May (Woodward) Dudley.

Always his father’s shadow on the family farm in North Augusta, he moved with his mother and brother to Plymouth, New Hampshire, as a teenager after his father suddenly passed away. It was there he fell in love with Barbara at the age of 15. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1968 as a varsity basketball and baseball athlete. After graduation he attended New Hampshire Vocational-Technical College, continuing his baseball career, and earning an AAS in Internal Combustion Engines.

Shortly after college, he married Barbara and moved back to Maine to build their house and raise their family together. You’d often catch Jimmy patiently teaching pragmatic lessons to his children and grandchildren, shooting hoops, tending to his giant vegetable garden, ice fishing out back, riding his snowmobile, working on someone’s logging equipment in the garage he built, or watching his beloved Boston Celtics.

He imparted his quiet wisdom, fierce independence, and dry sense of humor to his family.Jimmy worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Bridge Construction Company, in Windsor, welder at Bath Iron Works, and diesel technician at the Maine Department of Transportation, in Augusta, before retiring.

A persistent farmer at heart and an avid outdoorsman, Jimmy enjoyed hunting and fishing which he passed on to his children, grandchildren and other extended family and friends.

A member of both the Waterville and Kennebec Valley Beagle clubs, his life-long passion was raising beagles. As a leader in both clubs and the beagling community at large, he was a well-respected handler and judge in AKC field trials. He was very proud the day his beagle Taboo became an AKC National Field Champion.

During the Ice Storm of 1998 he and his co-workers at Maine DOT worked 18-hour days for weeks, tirelessly repairing utility and plow trucks to help get power back on to Maine homes and businesses, all while also not having power at home for 18 days.

He used the proceeds from that work to purchase a piece of land and built a camp with help from family and friends on Graham Lake, in Mariaville, using lumber he cut from the trees grown on the family farm. He enjoyed his time at “Camp O.T.”: fishing out front from shore or in his boat, target shooting, picking berries, ATVing, playing cribbage, marking his grandchildren’s heights, and spending memorable time with family.

He was predeceased by his wife Barbara of 51 years, his parents, his brother Robert (Bobby) Alton Dudley, Jr., of Sidney, and sister Jane Louise (Dudley) Patterson, of Chelsea.

The seventh child of nine siblings, Leon and Muriel named their five youngest boys John, David, Paul, Peter and James after the disciples of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The family lost their patriarch early in their lives, leaving Muriel and the older siblings to raise the family when there were little to no aid programs available. Peter had to go to work early in life to help himself as well as his family, holding multiple jobs at one time. It was while working at the Cascade Woolen mill, in Clinton, that he fell in love with his soulmate at a diner across the street where Virginia Beale was waiting tables. That love affair was put on hold in the spring of ‘67 when Peter was drafted into the U.S. Army. Peter served his country in Vietnam with the 8th Army assigned to an artillery unit, participating in the Tet Offensive in January 1968, Peter returned home to fend off any potential suitors and married his true love Virginia Beale and raised two boys.

Pete and Ginny as they were known were a dynamic duo, professionally as well as socially. In between working swing shifts at the mill, Pete and Ginny opened the first of her hair salons, the Zodiac on Silver Street, in Waterville. In his spare time Pete began a small rubbish route on the town dump days. Building from that Peter grew his side hustle, acquired other small local routes and eventually his company was sought after and acquired by the largest rubbish company on the globe. Not too weighed down with the thought of retirement, they purchased the Saddleback Motor Inn, in Rangeley. Having seen its better days, the Inn was in need of renewal, so Pete and Ginny rolled up their sleeves and went back to work. After renovating the 20-room inn they rebranded the restaurant and bar the Hungry Trout Bar & Grille. Pete and Ginny played host to thousands over the course of eight years.

Peter befriended many people with his charm, sense of humor, grin and that twinkle in his blue eyes, never having any ill will for anyone.

Peter is survived by his sons, Brent (Annette), of Winslow, Brian (Shyanne), of Burnham; grandsons, Dustin, of Portland, and Jared, of Winslow; brother James, of Faifield; sisters Joann Hopkins, of Green Spring’s Cove, Florida, and Kathy Sandy (Raymond), of Ocean View, Delaware; brother-in-law, Charles Proctor, of Burnham; sisters-in-law Mary, of Augusta, Drena, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Lillian, of St. Meyers, Florida, Delores, of Benton, and Jane, of Campbellsville, Kentucky.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Paul, David, John and Leon Jr. and a sister Annette Cloutier.

A Celebration of Life was held Sunday February 6, at the V.F.W. Post. #8835 175 Veteran Dr. Winslow, Maine.

GORDON R. HARDE

SIDNEY – Gordon R. Harde, 87, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the Alfond Center for Health, in Augusta, following complications from a brief health battle. Gordon was born in LaPorte, Indiana, on Febuary 21, 1934.

He attended high school in LaPorte, Indiana. Following his graduation in 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in dedicated service to his country in both active and reserve duty. Following release from active service (1956), Gordon attended the College of Pharmacy at Butler University, Indianapolis. During that period, Gordon found the love of his life, Clara Peeples. They were joined in marriage on December 27, 1958, to begin their journey as forever soulmates, and they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

After his college graduation in 1960, Gordon began his professional pharmacy career and was employed as a pharmacist for eight years at a small family drug store in South Bend, Indiana. In light of his growing family (son Michael and daughter Caryn) and broadening professional horizon, Gordon and Clara relocated to Maine where Gordon began a lengthy tenure with LaVerdiere’s Super Drug Stores. He worked as a pharmacist in many of their stores before being promoted to Director of Pharmaceutical Operations, where he oversaw and guided all aspects of LaVerdiere’s 50-plus location pharmacy division. Following his departure from LaVerdiere’s, Gordon entered the hospital field and continued his work as a pharmacist at Mid-Maine Medical Center, in Waterville, and at Kennebec Valley Medical Center, in Augusta. Gordon spent his final professional years working as a pharmacist at the VA Medical Center, at Togus, where he helped provide pharmacy services to other veterans.

Following his retirement at age 71, Gordon served as a volunteer at Maine Hospice of Waterville and at the Veterans Administration at Togus. Gordon carved eagle-head wooden canes for all of his hospice friends as an honor, commemoration, and reminder of their selfless contributions to our country.

Gordon was a renowned decoy and decorative bird carver. His works ranged from traditional, simply-carved pieces, to contemporary, intricately detailed decoys that, even at close range, appeared ready to take wing. He won many blue ribbons and Best of Show honors at both regional and national competitions as well as ribbons at the Ward World Championship competition held annually, in Ocean City, Maryland. He was also one of the founding members of the Maine Wood Carvers Association and introduced many people to the art of carving. He was accomplished as a flat art painter in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, and he loved all things related to woodworking. While he spent many hours in his workshop, Gordon still found time to enjoy bird watching, kayaking, fishing, hunting, hiking, diving, skiing, family game nights, and managing his and Clara’s property in Sidney.

There was never a dull moment when you were around Gordon. He could keep a group laughing and entertained for hours with his recounts of youthful antics (mostly at the expense of his childhood best friend, Walter). His propensity for witty playfulness as an adult was no less frequent but did have a bit of refinement and polish that came with decades of practice. Gordon was well-known for being a prankster. He showed a genuine interest in the lives of others, and he treated everyone with respect. He was a man of integrity who often said that a person’s worth is not measured by their assets but rather by the character of their soul. He loved his family beyond measure and was infinitely loved in return.

He is survived by his wife Clara; son Mike Harde and wife Kara Spragg; daughter Caryn Burwood and husband Tim; granddaughter Jamie Burwood and husband Adam Vachon; grandson Derek Harde and wife Laurence B. Violette; Darlene Norris and husband John; sisters-in-law Carol Jean Harde and Pamela Kozy and husband Raymond; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Axel and Frieda (Wegener) Harde; brother Milton; brother-in-law Donald Peeples and wife Denise; and sisters-in-law Lana Peeples and Donna Zech and husband Bud.
