Whitefield Lions announce peace poster contest winners

The Whitefield Lions club took part in judging Peace Posters from four different schools – Jefferson, Whitefield, Chelsea, Palermo. The contest asked the students to draw the Journey to Peace. At the Thursday meeting, the winners from the contest came to the Whitefield Lions club to receive recognition and awards. The first place winners will move on to the next round of competition. the Lions are an international service group and this competition will eventually display the final winning posters at the United Nations Lions Day.

Live auction and yard sale at St. Giles in Jefferson

A canoe will be among auction items Aug. 24 at St. Giles, in Jefferson.

A canoe, a table saw, nail guns and other serious tools, three days at an Arrowsic cottage on the water, horseback riding lessons, bicycles, new infant/child gear and clothing, homemade jams and pickles, a basket of green cleaning supplies, QuickBooks help – these are among the offerings at the Saturday August 24, St. Giles Jefferson silent and live auction and yard sale.

Added attractions will include a homemade pie sale, with dozens of choices, with a focus on fruit pies. There will be burgers and hot dogs from Bill’s grill, a homemade children’s quilt, a boat trip on Belfast Bay, home-organization sessions with a professional organizer, an organic produce basket, a new under-seat rolling suitcase, an antique table and lamp, and many “treasures” at garage sale prices.

Hours of the event are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the church hall and under the pines in the church yard. The silent auction will end at noon and the live auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. St. Giles Episcopal Church is located at 72 Gardiner Road, in Jefferson, a quarter mile west of the junction of Gardiner Road (Route 126) and Bunker Hill Road (Route 213). Donations top 700 lbs. to Jefferson Food Pantry

The Jefferson Area Community Food Pantry received more than 700 pounds of non-perishable food from area residents who donated through the US Postal Service Food Drive this past Saturday. A special thanks to all who donated and to the postal carriers for all the extra work.

All those in need of help providing food for themselves, their families or know of someone in need, the pantry is open the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at St Giles Episcopal Church, 72 Gardiner Rd (Rt 126) in Jefferson.

Laura Sullivan Wins Earth Day Basket

Laura Sullivan, of Jefferson, was delighted when she learned she had won the Living Communities Foundation’s Earth Day Basket Raffle. Sullivan is looking forward to using the gardening tools and supplies to plant her perennial bulbs and veggies.” The contents of the basket were valued at over $300. Most of the tickets were sold at Hussey’s, and they graciously donated several essential garden tools.

This would not have been possible without the hard work of volunteers Nanci Pollard, Ronn Sepp, Ann Sears, Denise Wilcox, and Mike Dunn. Proceeds benefit the Palermo Community Center and Community Garden, and the Palermo Food Pantry.

Two new members were inducted into the Whitefield Lions club at their regular meeting January 10. David and Julie Rand, both of Jefferson, are sponsored by First Vice President Lion Donna Brooks. Past President Lion Pam Moody performed the induction ceremony at the Whitefield Lions clubhouse, in Coopers Mills.

Jefferson food pantry announces December openings

On November 14 the Jefferson Area Community Food Pantry supplied food to 56 families, representing 125 family members. The largest attendance to date. In addition to fresh produce from Twin Villages Food Bank Farm and Good Shepherd Food Bank, non perishables, fresh eggs, bread, pumpkin pies, turkeys, plus additional assorted meats were available.

Generous donations were received from several churches and community citizens and are greatly appreciated during this holiday season. If you would like to donate food, please call the number below. Monetary donations can be sent by check and made payable to St Giles Church, PO Box 34, Jefferson, ME 04348, with “JACFB” written in the memo area.

The December opening dates are two weeks in a row this year. Wednesday, December 12 and Wednesday December 19, 4 – 5:30 p.m., at St Giles Church, 72 Gardiner Road (Rt 126), Jefferson. For more information, call 315-1134.

Winners of the Peace Poster Contest were honored with their art teachers by the Whitefield Lions Club on October 25.

For over 30 years Lions clubs around the world have sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest.

The theme of the 2018-2019 contest is “Kindness Matters.”

To the editor:

On behalf of the pantry board, the volunteers and all those who receive we thank the many residents who participated in the US Postal Service food drive last Saturday.

More than 600 pounds of food was collected by our wonderful postal folks. Many thanks to them. Donations surpassed last year by over 200 pounds.
