ROBERT A. ARCHER

CLINTON – Robert A. “Flat” Archer, 58, of Clinton, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, following a six-week long hard, courageous battle resulting from a tragic car wreck, in which he was a passenger. Robert was born March 3, 1961, in Brewer.

He spent his childhood and dug his roots in Clinton. As a young teenager, Robert moved to Florida with his mother and began to build his life there. He met Mina Curry, and they had a daughter, Rachael. While living in Florida, Robert began his career as a mason by trade, and was very skilled in what he did. Upon his return to Maine in the early 1990s, Robert continued to work as a mason and built a life doing the things he loved; fishing, hunting, listening to music and spending time by the ocean. He eventually met his girlfriend of 15 years, Becky Littlefield, while attending the East Benton’s Fiddler’s Convention.

Robert was always in a good mood and always genuinely happy to see you. He made friends wherever he went, and had a large network of friends who will miss him terribly. He thought of his friends as his family, and his close friends like his brothers. Robert valued what it meant to be a friend and would do just about anything for his friends, and because of this you knew when you were considered one of “Flat’s friends”.

Robert is survived by daughter Rachael Baker and her mother Mina Curry, of Florida; father Roger Archer, of Brewer; longtime partner Becky Littlefield, of East Benton; and lifelong friend and brother, Andrew Fitzpatrick, his wife Melody and their daughters, Amanda and Alisa, all of Clinton; several stepchildren whom he never considered “step,” Laura Weiz, Lisa and husband James Selson, and Brian Baker, all of Florida.

Robert is predeceased by his mother, Eleanor (Drew) King and her husband Bill, of Clinton; and a stepson, Dale Baker, of Florida.

A burial and celebration of life will be planned for this spring and announced at a later date.

She was raised in Randolph, graduating from Gardiner High School in 1945.

She worked for Thompson Lumber Co., before meeting John L. Dancer at her uncle’s store, in Randolph. They married on June 2, 1947. John had started a small dairy farm in Whitefield. Mama said that they were able to find someone to care for the farm so, they could go to a borrowed cottage for a one-night honeymoon! They ran the farm, with all of the joys and burdens associated with it, raising a son and two daughters; she said that while waiting for each baby to arrive, she would feel very sick, but she was needed to drive the hay wagon, so she would nap on the truck seat while John and his helpers loaded the wagon! Along with the duties of farmer’s wife, she was also the town clerk for Whitefield during their years on the farm. After selling the farm in 1968, she worked for the Maine Lung Association, in Augusta, until her retirement in the mid 1980s.

Hellen loved to sew, making many clothes and birthday and Christmas gifts for her children when they were little. During her retirement years she began creating colorful “potholders,” giving many to family and friends. One of her last sewing projects was making over 50 of these to give to each lady (young and old) at her church. She also enjoyed baking desserts, which the family always thought were the best we had ever tasted! Baked beans were her specialty and were always expected at the “potluck” lunches at church. Birdwatching was one of her favorite activities, always hoping to see the cardinals, because, she always agreed with the saying, “Cardinals appear when angels are near.” She also loved flowers and tended many perennials in her backyard each summer.

Hellen was predeceased by her parents; husband, John; daughter, Janey Dancer; son, Pastor John C. Dancer; brothers, George Brawn and Harrison Brawn; sister, Marjorie Page and many other relatives.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois Bourque and husband Stephen, of Whitefield; daughter-in-law, Donna Dancer, of Jefferson; sister-in-law, Louise Dancer, of Whitefield; six grandchildren: Susan Batty and husband Bill, Jonathan Dancer, Joshua Dancer, Elizabeth Heath and husband Joe, George Bourque, and Hellen Bourque; nine Great-grandchildren: Julia, Matthew and Nathanial Batty, Grace, Hannah and Benjamin Dancer, Reanna and Blake Heath, and Estelle Ford; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

DR. PATRICK BRANCACCIO

WATERVILLE – Dr. Patrick Brancaccio, 85, died on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at home.

For 40 years, Brancaccio was a beloved professor of English at Colby College, in Waterville. After his official retirement in 2003, Brancaccio continued to teach students of all ages. Trained in American literature with an expertise in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville, he was a longtime chairman of the Colby English Department. He helped to found Colby’s Black Studies program, one of the first in the Northeast, which he directed from 1971-1983. Brancaccio also directed the college’s program in London for several years.

Brancaccio had near-photographic recall of the knowledge in his imposing library. His scholarly writing ranged from the history of colonialism, to Strindberg in performance, to Edgar Allan Poe’s role in the origins of detective fiction.

Pat had a lifelong openness to new ideas and an appreciation for the power of diversity. In 1974, his passion for African literature led to a Fulbright fellowship to teach at the University of Madagascar. Accompanied by his wife, the late Ruth Brancaccio, and his three children Lisa, Peter, and David, Pat and family experienced a fascinating year punctuated by a coup d’etat and martial law.

Patrick Brancaccio was born in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, in 1934, the first of four children. His father, who emigrated from Italy, delivered laundry in Brooklyn. From the age of 11, Pat helped on the route and kept the accounts. He attended Brooklyn College while living at home and studying in his basement. Pat was the first in his family to earn a college degree. He later received an MA from Ohio State and a PhD from Rutgers. For a time, he taught in New York City public schools and was a sales rep at a New York publishing house. With Ruth, a teacher and theater director, he traveled the world ranging from Tanzania to Scotland and points in between. For nearly two decades they owned a small house in Saint-Thibery, France, where they welcomed many visitors from Maine and beyond.

After losing Ruth, his wife of 46 years, to cancer in 2004, Pat married writer Kate Cone in 2010 and the travels continued. They explored Venice, Bologna, Florence and Rome and loved their forays into the Valpolicella hills to sample wine.

Food played a big role in Pat and Kate’s life, with Kate learning to master Italian dishes for Pat’s discriminating palate. Each Christmas Eve, they planned and sourced a traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes crowned with Pat’s amazing tiramisu for dessert.

Pat drew great energy from teaching Colby students during the January program in Verona, Italy, which he directed for 13 years. He joked that he felt like Julius Caesar with a “praetorian guard” as he walked Italian streets flanked by students who were sometimes Colby football players. In recent years, his Friends of the Goldfarb Center seminars at Colby attracted a loyal following of older learners through lectures on eclectic topics such as detective fiction, or food in film. He was also an avid photographer who occasionally exhibited around Waterville.

He is survived by his wife Kate; brother Anthony and wife Ann Brancaccio; daughter Lisa Brancaccio and husband Torben Brooks; son Peter Brancaccio and wife Laura Singer; son David and wife Mary Brancaccio; grandchildren Linus, Stella, Sam, Anna, Madeleine, and Nicholas. Kate’s three children consider Pat their step-father, mentor and friend. Samantha Ellyn and husband Nick, Megan Cornwall and husband Hamilton, Burke Hazard and wife Jamie, all will miss Pat tremendously. And Finn, Katie and baby Maxine will miss their “Buppah” sorely.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be sent to the Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

An online guestbook may be signed, condolences and memories shared at www.gallantfh.com.

DEAN L. WADE

SIDNEY – Dean L Wade, 61, of Sidney, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2019, following a seven-year battle with cancer. Deano was born on May 3, 1958, in Valparaiso, Florida, to Carey Wade and Elizabeth Carr.

He was raised between the family home in Malden, Massachusetts and Uncle Freddy’s farm, in Antrim, New Hampshire.

Dean first met Cindy (Manter) at 15 years old when their siblings began dating. Five years later, in 1978, they became the second Wade/Manter wedding. Deano and Cindy built their first house in Byfield, Massachusetts, in 1980 after the birth of their first son Tim, and welcomed their other two children, Chris and Catie into that home. Soon after they purchased an undeveloped lake property in Sidney. In 1984 Deano and a crew of weekend warriors, fueled on Miller Lite, built the family’s forever home on a beautiful spot on Messalonskee Lake.

Deano was an avid outdoorsman and shared that love with his family and close friends. Deano loved to fish, though he sometimes didn’t even bother to bring a pole. He enjoyed the camaraderie and mostly just being up north and in the woods. Deano’s guilty pleasure was sci-fi and cheesy B rated movies.

He loved Star Trek and would always comment on how revolutionary Gene Roddenberry was.

Deano was a lifelong learner and enjoyed reading and watching documentaries. He had a gift of conveying knowledge he had picked up along his unique journey and was an amazing teacher.

Professionally, Dean was a construction supervisor, presenting him the opportunity to work for multiple firms with many great people throughout northern New England. He was one of the best excavator operators to ever pull the sticks. He also owned his own business as a licensed site evaluator, performing soil tests throughout Maine.

Whether at work or play, Deano had a way of explaining in an order of operations that made the toughest task seem simple. He touched and shaped so many people with so few words. He was a gifted listener, and so many people are grateful to have had the opportunity to sit idly with Deano in his truck and share a conversation and a cold one.

Dean was predeceased by both parents and stepfather, Edwin Carr, as well as many other family members.

He is survived by wife Cindy Wade, of Sidney; sons Tim Wade, of Sidney, and Chris Wade and wife Jen (Lovely), of Gardiner, and daughter Catie and husband Chris Perry, of Portland; grandchildren Dakota Lovely, Connor Wade, Nathan Wade, and Everett Perry; sisters Jeanie (Wade) Manter, Adel (Carr) Buckley, Beth (Carr) Lane, and Trisha Carr and brother Edwin Carr; and many other family members.

A celebration of Deano’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, at 3 p.m., at the Snow Pond Center for the Arts (New England Music Camp), on the Pond Road, in Sidney. Flannel attire is encouraged.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville.

They performed Mad Cow testing for the government, testing well over 600 cows. Cherry also had a knack for rescuing animals that were abused or sick.

Cherry always stuck to her Blackfoot Native roots with her respect for mother earth. She was a strong believer in “waste not, want not.” She would find uses for things that most people would throw away.

Cherry enjoyed gardening, farming, cooking, sewing, knitting, drawing and learning what she could from the television show Animal Planet. She would often share her knowledge with her family and friends. Even though she wasn’t a member of the Clinton Lions, she participated in a lot of events every year at the Clinton Lions Agricultural Fair. She would enter her artwork into the art contest, bake pies for the pie contest, and enter her veggies from her garden into other agricultural contests. Cherry and Richard ran the pig scramble for many years.

Cherry worked hard for many years for this country and she enjoyed every minute of it.

THOMAS V. WILLIAMS

CHELSEA – Thomas V. Williams, of Chelsea, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2020, at MaineGeneral Hospital following his long battle with cancer. Tom was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1943, the youngest of five children of William E. Williams and Ella E. Williams.

In 1946, the family moved to Chelsea, which from that time forward was always considered home for him right up to his death.

He started school in Chelsea at the one room school houses #1 and #2, then went on to the Chelsea Consolidated School before going to Cony High School, in Augusta. He graduated from Cony High School in 1961 and went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono.

After the death of President Kennedy, he decided to put his education on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon enlistment he was guaranteed 36 weeks of electronic training. After completing eight weeks of basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, he was transferred to Fort Monmouth for microwave communications training and completed the 36 weeks with an additional eight weeks of tropospheric scatter communication systems. After the training was completed he transferred to a one year tour in Thailand providing a part of the communication links between the Army and Air Force bases in Vietnam. After his tour, he transferred back to Fort Monmouth as an instructor in multiplexing systems. He was honorably discharged after three years with a rank of Specialist 5.

Upon returning to Maine, he attended the University of Maine in Augusta and then went to Radio Engineering Institute in Sarasota, Florida, attaining an FCC First Class Radio license. It was this various training in communications systems which lead to his eventual career in audio-visual systems.

Early in life he worked as an auto mechanic learning these skills from his father and brothers. This is when he gained his skills at tinkering and repairing equipment. He coupled this with the communication system training and began a long career in system repairs. He began as an inspector mechanic for cable TV at WCBB TV, then after working for two employers in audio-visual repair, he eventually built his own business, Consolidated Electronic Service, repairing audio-visual equipment in schools statewide. Besides doing what he loved to do, he also got to see almost all of the state of Maine. He continued this for well over 25 years before finally retiring.

Tom was an avid outdoorsman enjoying both hunting and fishing. He frequently would get into political debates just for the sake of debating. He enjoyed being with family and friends often helping others with various equipment repairs. This is how he got the reputation as a “jack of all trades, master of none,” though he really was good at so much. Anytime he could he would try to pass these skills on to the kids.

Family was important to him. Besides his parents, brothers and sisters, he was able to expand his family when he married his first wife, Linda Savage Williams. Together they had a daughter, Trisha. Tom always considered Trisha’s sister and brothers as his own and was thankful for them all. Even after his divorce he continued to be with them all. In fact, after his divorce, thanks to his sister Nancy, in 1977, he met his second wife, Judy, and were married in 1983. Together they were there for the kids. He enjoyed family outings to the Maine coast, the Bridgton area, and other adventures with the kids including some unusual camping trips. Each year he looked forward to apple picking with Trish, Bill, his grandchildren, Rachel and Adam, and Judy and also helping with the holiday season Christmas tree trimming by handling the ornaments out to each of them.

He was predeceased by his parents, Williams E. Williams, Jr. and Ella E. Williams; brothers, William E. Williams III and James Williams, and sisters, Nancy White and Ruth Ann Allen.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, of Chelsea; daughter, Trisha Jones, son-in-law, William Jones; and his grandchildren, Rachel and Adam, all of Grafton, Massachusetts; his extended children, daughter, Cheryl Wheeler and her husband, Gary, sons Mike McArthur and Shawn Williams, all of Augusta; and their children Brittany, Casey, Josh, Jeremy, Andrew, Isaac, Elizabeth, Taylah, Savannah, Shawnkey and Jarrett; and several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and an uncle.

A celebration of life for Tom will be held at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street in Augusta, Friday January 10, 2020, at 12:30 p.m. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Burial with military honors will follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website at www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com.

Obituaries for Thursday, January 2, 2019

HELEN K. MOSHER

BRUNSWICK – Helen (Kenoyer) Mosher, 104, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. She was born on September 17, 1915, in a small sod house built by Henry and Annie Kenoyer on the native plains of Vale, South Dakota. She was the first daughter born to a family of 10 children.

Her mother taught her as a young girl that a mother’s love is not divided like pumpkin pie between the children she brings into the world. Much to the contrary, a mother’s heart is multiplied with each successive life she creates, which explains a mother’s seemingly boundless capacity for love. What then, can we say of our Great-Great Grammy Helen who created, then mothered five living generations of children? Her lifetime is ultimately a mother’s love story of a proud and fiercely resilient woman who desperately loved her children, husband and extended family, while serving as the cornerstone of her community during the 104 years that her light shined ever so brightly on this earthly realm.

Helen crossed into the flowered fields of the great hereafter to join her pre-deceased husband Charles Mosher of 64 years, with whom she mothered more than 80 direct decedents, each of whom carries her enduring legacy of grace, piety and generosity.

Her humble beginnings on the Cheyenne River and pioneer values forged an ideology of personal resolve that placed family as the first priority in all matters. She learned as a young girl that home is where the heart rests after her family of 12 boarded a Dodge Touring car and Model T Ford truck to travel to a farm in Windsor, Maine, where the Kenoyers made their home. Her lifetime in Maine transcended the travails of living history through the Great Depression and multiple wartime services, to which she was no stranger as her Gold Star family gave handsomely to the causes of our nation. The loss of her youngest brother, Russell Kenoyer, over the skies of Germany on April 16, 1945, never healed, despite her stalwart faith bolstered by her decades long worship at the South China Community Church, on the shores of China Lake. Her longevity likewise saw the predeceased passing of her oldest daughter Margaret, brothers and sisters and grandchildren Laurie and Ross.

Having met Charles Mosher, the love of her life, she moved from her family home in Windsor to their first home in Benton Station where they raised a family, before moving to their final home overlooking China Lake. It was here that they lived their elder lives in the company of the huge family they bore spending summers at small cottages on Pine Point, on China Lake, hosting regular family gatherings and their rapidly multiplying grandchildren.

Her surviving family in addition to her children Richard, David and Winnifred and cousin Chuck Sisson who grew up in the Kenoyer family, includes more than 76 grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren. We will remember with affinity her illuminating and continuous presence in our lives, her emphasis on education, family history and summers on China Lake with heavy cookie jar lids, eating white perch for supper, Red Sox games on the radio, motor boats, painted rocks leading to the shore, slamming screen doors, the aromatic scent of pine needles and, always, her humming melodies somewhere in the house not far away.

Most of all, Helen Mosher was an affirmation not only of the existence of God in our world, but that He must truly love us to give us so many years in the company of her great maternal spirit. She was, after all, our mother whom we loved as the circle continues, unbroken.

Friends wishing may make donations in her memory to the S. China Community Church, 246 Village Street, S. China, Maine 04358.

Arrangements by Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.

GEORGE F. BALBO

CHINA – George Francis Balbo, 69, of China, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 9, 2019, following a brief and courageous battle with an aggressive form of cancer, succumbing less than four weeks after his initial diagnosis and leaving his broad circle of family and friends shocked and heartbroken at his passing.

Born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, George grew up in a large family as one of 12 children, graduating from Lakewood High School in 1968.

In 1971 he began dating his future wife, Mary (Eiben) and soon after they followed one of his sisters to Maine to live in the Twitchell Hill community in Montville.

Beginning his career as a machinist, George also worked at various times as a firetower watchman, farmhand, roofer, surveyor’s assistant and more, but most of his career was as a talented, self-taught, and self-employed carpenter.

By 1975 George and Mary were married and had settled in China, where George, over the years, transformed their 1780s, one-room house into a multi-story, hand-built, off-grid home. Accomplished gardeners and homesteaders, George and Mary had huge gardens where they grew and preserved a large part of their year’s supply of vegetables, leaving surplus for neighbors at their roadside stand.

George’s kind and loving nature drew people to him. Having survived an abusive childhood, George found sobriety and mental health in his early 30s; his openness about his challenges and successes drew admiration and inspired many others. He worked tirelessly every day and was strong and fit until his illness. He was a legendary storyteller at any gathering and especially around his dining room table. He had an innate ability to make people feel comfortable and cherished. He had an expansive memory and a fact or song lyric (usually rock or blues) ready for any situation. He was charming, hilarious, and had an insatiable curiosity about others and the world in general. He rarely met a stranger who didn’t become a friend after their first meeting.

George was a voracious reader and a seemingly endless fountain of knowledge. Whenever someone (usually his younger daughters) would doubt something he said, he’d always say, “Don’t believe me? Look it up.” And 99 percent of the time he would be right. George had a special understanding and love of trees and the natural world. Two of his other great loves were Native American history and spirituality, and classic cars and motorcycles.

George is survived by his wife, Mary Balbo; daughters, Angela Balbo and fiancé Michael Januska, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Jane Balbo and husband Aaron Burk, of Athens, Ohio; son, Jason Hooper and wife Brittney, of Cleveland, Ohio; daughters, Cari Balbo and husband Michael Maines, of Palermo, and Anna Balbo Baldwin and husband Thomas Baldwin, of South Portland; grandsons, Sam, Oliver, and namesake George; 16 siblings and step-siblings, along with their spouses; nieces, nephews and cousins; his Aunt Dolores.

There will be a celebration of George’s life on the summer solstice, 2020. His family asks that if you have stories and thoughts of George to share that you please consider emailing them to fallsbrookfarm@gmail.com to be read at his memorial and to help his loved ones heal from their loss.

Gordy graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1965. He served as a sergeant in the United States Army and was stationed in Key West at the missile site there. Later, he served one tour of duty in Vietnam lasting 14 months. Gordy used his GI Bill funds and graduated from UMF in 1973. He completed the Ironworkers Apprenticeship Program and was a Journeyman Ironworker for 33 years. He served on the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee and the Executive Board for 25 of those years. Gordy married the former Sharon Hennings, in Mercer. They made a life together for 44 years. Gordy and Sharon had two sons Grant Alan Provost and Gordon “Ashley ” Provost.

He was renovating an old camp at Wesserunsett and had revived an outhouse at Clearwater. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do, make or fix.

He could be seen fly fishing Wesserunsett, in Madison, and Spencer Stream, in Eustis, in warm weather and ice fishing Sibley Pond, in Canaan, during winter.
