OBITUARIES for Thursday, May 21, 2020

BARBARA C. DOWE

SOUTH CHINA – Barbara C. Dowe, 88, of South China, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at the Alzheimers’s Care Center, in Gardiner. She was born the only child to Ralph and Madeline Cushman, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 15,1931, the same year the Empire State Building was completed and opened.

She was an innocent, petit, blue-eyed beauty. As an infant she didn’t know the great challenges ahead: The U.S. was in the midst of the Dust Bowl Years, The Great Depression was worsening, and food prices and unemployment were going through the roof. She was sheltered living in Westwood, outside Boston, until her family moved to China.

During her childhood she inherited a true love of music. Her father, Ralph Cushman, had been a union musician in the Boston area and played drums for some of the big-name bands of the times, and her mother, Madeline Sampson Cushman, had “barnstormed” throughout New England with him before Barbara was born. Barbara never took up an instrument, but she was an accomplished singer performing at local minstrel shows, weddings, and her church choir. Musicals were her love!

On July 22,1951, she married Richard E. Dowe, of South China, and was instantly welcomed into the larger family that she had always wished for with five “sisters” and three “brothers”! Their support was so important when Richard left for military duty in Korea six months later because Barbara was pregnant with their daughter, Linda. When Richard returned home, the family headed to Tennessee for two years before returning to Maine in 1954 where they would settle down, buy a house and raise four children: Linda, Sherri, Rhonda and Rick.

A good many of the “Mom Years” were a time of struggle but also of a defined character. After all, she was a child of the depression. People remembered the hardship of the 1930s and the rationing of the war years, and she grew up to be “thrifty” and resourceful often adding to the family income by helping in Richard’s electronics business, raising dogs to sell, gardening, sewing and whatever else she could think of. That’s what it took to get by in China, in the 1950s with four kids, a mortgage and self-employment that provided a service and relied on people paying their bills.

She could stretch a dollar! Mom lived by JFK’s, “ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” She – as so many others of her generation – believed in commitment to country, church, and community. There was Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, China Food Pantry, South China Community Church, the list goes on. Even the hardware business that Richard and she started – Dowe’s True Value Hardware – was to fill a need for the community. It was a thriving business up until they retired.

Always at Richard’s side at American Legion events, Memorial Day parades, and numerous patriotic causes, she was committed to service for others. Whatever Barbara was involved in, she gave 110 percent to the cause.

As cruel as Alzheimer’s is, the lost loves of her life never vanished in the mist of the disease. During her final years she always waited for the arrival of daughter Rhonda, who had died in 2002, her husband Richard, who passed in 2016, her mother and best friend, Madeline, and her beloved pet, Kodi. She left a legacy of love and a challenge to others to continue helping those in need. Barbara was predeceased by her two parents, Madeline and Ralph Cushman; her youngest daughter, Rhonda Dowe; and her husband of 64 years, Richard E. Dowe.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Poulin and her husband, Don; her daughter, Sherri Glidden and her fiancé, Bill Gamble; her son, Rick Dowe and his wife, Mary; her four grandchildren, Stacy Westfall, Jesse Glidden, Tiffany Ranalla and Chelsea Dowe; and her eight great-grandchildren, Caleb Westfall, Joshua Westfall, Nathan Westfall, Nevaeh Ranalla, Peyton Dowe, Aubrey Ranalla, Liam Dowe, and Adaleigh Glidden.

Due to Covid-19 and the current health restrictions, a date for the service will be determined later.

Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, in Belfast.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at http://www.directcremationofmaine.com.

FRED CURTIS

CHINA – Fred Curtis, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 3, 2020.

Fred lived a full and happy life and his legacy will forever endure in the hearts of family.

He had a special way of making anyone who came into his life feel like his family, particularly within the China community and in his church community. Fred was one in a million – a man who poured so much love into this world.

Fred bravely served our country in the Vietnam War, and further served the Pan Am Railroad, in Waterville, from which he proudly retired. Upon retirement, Fred faithfully attended to a service that was needed within the China community. He was a local businessman for many years, lovingly referred to as the “Trash Man.” Fred also served the Lord by, and through, the Winslow Baptist Church, where he helped with the youth group. His former Pastor described Fred as follows, “God used Fred in a wonderfully unique and amazing way. Every teen who entered that ministry knew that Fred cared for them. Fred was the most faithful servant in the youth ministry. He loved the Lord and he loved seeing kids step into faith and grow their walk with God.”

Most often, you could spot Fred driving around with his wife spending quality time together laughing; he always had such a witty sense of humor. They loved to drive around all day, enjoying each other and all the beautiful sights that Maine has to offer. Fred Curtis was first and foremost a family man, the glue that held it all together. He was kind and loving, but most importantly, he was a man of faith. He will forever live on in our hearts.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always preservers. Love never fails.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years, Terry Curtis; his children, Larry Curtis, Tony Curtis, Chris Curtis and Fred Curtis; two sisters, a brother, many grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces. He will be greatly missed by all.

VIRGINIA T. POULIN

WATERVILLE – Virginia Theresa (Karter) Poulin, 87, died on Friday, May 1, 2020, at her home, in Waterville, following a lengthy period of illness. Virginia was born May 27, 1932, at home, in a cold-water flat, at Head of Falls, Waterville, the youngest child of Nora (Peters) and Boulus Karter.

Virginia was very proud of her Lebanese heritage. She recalled fondly what a great people her parents were, their honesty, generosity and hard work. By the time she was to graduate high school, the entire family had worked hard, pooled their resources and saved enough money to buy their own home, the immigrant dream fulfilled. This home would be the home that she would return to in her retirement, and the home where she died.

She was a proud graduate of Waterville High School, class of 1950, one of only two in her family to complete high school. As a young woman, she worked several jobs, but was primarily employed at Diamond Match, in Oakland, for most of the 1950s. In 1958 she married David Poulin, of Fairfield, (son of Beatrice (Bearce) and Lawrence Poulin.) Together they had two children, Eric and Lauren. After their marriage, they lived in Saco for nearly six years, and then moved to California for several years. They returned to Maine, and divorced in the early ‘70s after 14 years of marriage.

Virginia moved on, regrouped and built a new life with her son and daughter. Although divorced, she remained in good relationship with the Poulin family for the remainder of her life.

Over the years, she did whatever jobs necessary to provide for her children, however her true calling was childcare, often babysitting for others and leaving her indelible mark on every child she ever cared for.

She had a unique ability to make you feel special, feel loved unconditionally, and feel important. If she liked you, you were in her brood for life. A perfect example is how she bonded with her daughter and son-in-law’s family, claiming Rick’s mother May, each of his siblings, their spouses and their children for her own; loving them, celebrating them, and having great pride in their successes and supporting them in their challenges. In return they made her feel very loved and special.

Virginia maintained a lifelong friendship with her oldest friend from childhood, Marion White, as well as enjoying a wonderful friendship of over 40 years with her dear friend Laya Joseph.

Virginia felt very blessed to be able to be in her home at the time of her death, and her family is grateful for the amazing support that helped this to happen.

She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings: Carrie, Elias, Alice, Mary, Louise and Freda.

She is survived locally by her son Eric Poulin and his partner Linda Fairburn, and her daughter Lauren and husband Rick Ross, also of Waterville; numerous nieces and nephews who will miss their aunt Gin.

Due to restrictions in place because of COVID 19, there is no service planned at this time. However, Virginia will receive a Mass of Christian Burial at a time when we can safely gather to honor her wishes and celebrate her life.

You are invite to offer your condolences and share fond memories by visiting Virginia’s guestbook at www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com, a service of Veilleux and Redington Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, Maine 04901.

LINDA R. OGREN

BENTON – Linda Reynolds Ogren, 72, of Benton, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020, from complication due to COVID-19. She was born May 16, 1947, to Theodore Linwood Reynolds and Barbara Chace Reynolds, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Linda was raised on the Reynolds Farm on Post Road, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. It was during her childhood that she developed a love of animals and gardening that would continue throughout her life. The Reynolds farm was a working dairy, egg and produce farm. At 10 months old Linda would go on her first of many trips with her father while he was making milk deliveries. Growing up, Linda could frequently be found working in their vegetable stand that was known to everyone in the community. Linda always had a favorite cow and she loved spending time working with them in the barn.

Linda met and married Roger Emund Ogren in September of 1965. They first settled in Rhode Island and had three children. It was during this time that Linda began raising and showing Bloodhounds. This passion would continue for many years. This passion gave her the ability to travel around the country and to Canada to show her beloved Bloodhounds where she won a large amount of trophies and ribbons with their success at shows. In 1973 Linda and Roger moved to Mt. Vernon to continue raising their children. During this time Linda was able to expand on her talents for growing flowers and creating gardens. She had a “green thumb” and could make anything grow. Linda was also very talented with sewing and crafts. Linda owned and operated “A Touch of Country” craft store for many years out of her home and could frequently be found at craft fairs around the community.

Linda was a very talented artist and excelled at Rosemaling painting. Linda loved to cook and was always trying out new recipes. She passed down many recipes to family members even creating personalized family cookbooks for each of her children with photos and names of who each recipe was passed down from, with Roger’s help taste testing them all.

Linda and Roger eventually moved back to Rhode Island for a time and it was during this time that Linda and Roger discovered “Genealogy” which would become Linda’s greatest passion. During this time Linda traced her family members back to Roger Williams and the Mayflower. Because of Linda’s love for genealogy, she became a moderator on several genealogy forums and assisted people all over the country and in other parts of the world find and connect with family genealogy. Linda had an incredible mind and could remember even the tiniest of details to help anyone who needed it. Linda continued this passion when they moved back to Maine. There was not a craft that Linda could not master and the last few years she spent countless hours knitting hats and scarves that she could send to her friends and family and also gave them to her care givers during her stay in the hospital.

Linda was an avid sports fan and followed college basketball and Nascar faithfully. Many family events where planned around these two favorite things. Her favorite team was the Rhode Island Rams and she would always be sporting her URI sweatshirt and holding her stuffed Rhody the Ram while loudly cheering her team on.

Dennis and Donna went on to start their family and raised three children in Waterville. Dennis spent his working life as a conductor at Maine Central Railroad. Though he worked long hours his main priority was always his wife Donna and his three children. Through the children’s years, you would always see Dennis coaching his sons in football, hockey and baseball and on the sidelines watching his daughter cheer, compete in gymnastic and dance. He was also a-long time baseball umpire; you could hear his strike from miles away. Along with that Dennis and Donna enjoyed spending time with his best friend and brother Clinton (Sonny) Martin and his wife Thelma.

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and ice fishing in his younger years with his brother Ricky and friends from the railroad. His competitive spirit brought him back to the field where he played men’s league softball. Donna and Dennis would even travel to Canada where Dennis would compete in this game. He was also a long-time member of the Elks Lodge where he tended bar, made friends, where many fond memories were made. Dennis was also deemed a Master Mason from the Grand Lodge of Maine in 1977.

Donna and Dennis enjoyed spending time with their family at their home, especially around the pool they had installed 41 years ago. Dennis and Donna would also look forward to their long weekends in Old Orchard Beach. The house was full during the holidays with their children, spouses and grandchildren who who fondly called Dennis their Papa. Papa’s Christmas Breakfast was looked forward to and loved by all. Cribbage was a favorite, but “Jacks or better, trips to win” was always Papa’s game. Additionally, Papa was a scratch ticket master. He loved the thrill of “how much money is Papa getting!” Papa enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and you would even hear him at times honk his horn when one of his grandchildren made an amazing save, had a great hit or a homerun, made a great tackle or scored a goal.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Donna (Pooler), his daughter Tammy and her husband Shane Littlefield, of Fairfield, his son Dennis Jr. and his wife Wendy, of Oakland, and his son Troy and his wife Danielle, of Waterville; grandchildren, Tennyson Martin, Adam Littlefield, Cameron Littlefield, Brooke Martin, Denny Martin and Gabi Martin; brother Joseph “Ricky” and wife Lorette Martin, of Fairfield; sisters-in-law, Thelma Martin, of Winslow, and Marge and husband Craig Handley, of Sidney; Dan Pooler and his partner Nancy Cayford, of Waterville, and many nieces and nephews.

NATALIE R. TERRY

WATERVILLE – Natalie Rines Terry, 96, died of natural causes on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. Born in Portland on July 14, 1923, Natalie was the daughter of Herman and Mabel Canning Rines.

The family moved to Waterville in the early 1930s. Natalie’s twin brother, Don Rines, describes a happy childhood saying, “We couldn’t have had a nicer set of parents.” Natalie and Don graduated from Waterville High School in 1941. She went on to attend Thomas College and later to work at Keyes Fibre Company, both in Waterville.

Natalie married George F. Terry III (known as Tim) in October 1952 at the Colby College Chapel, in Waterville. In March 1954 their first child, George F. Terry IV (known as Geof in his youth) was born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, in Virginia. Their daughter, Sarah Ann Terry was born in May 1957, in Waterville, and was brought home to the family’s newly purchased house that Natalie cherished and in which she lived independently until her death.

A natural athlete, Natalie competed in varied sports during her youth, including figure skating, diving, and golf. She was one of the original skiers of Sugarloaf, skinning up with Amos Winter and others in the early 1950s and skiing down the only trail on the mountain at that time, now known as Old Winter’s Way. She was passionate about the sport, having an illustrious career teaching skiing with the Sugarloaf Ski School that spanned 50 years. She was a Level III Certified instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America, received an award from them for Life Membership of Outstanding Service to the Education of Snowsports, and had been recognized by Ski Magazine as one of the top 100 ski instructors in America. She was inducted into the Maine Ski Hall of Fame in October 2012. An award is given each year in Natalie’s name for the most requested instructor at Sugarloaf, though during her career it was given to the second most requested since she claimed the top spot for many years. A few springs ago the Birches trail was renamed “Natalie’s Birches.” Her last year teaching was the season of 2018-2019 at the age of 95. The Sugarloaf community was central to her life and the Carrabassett Valley brought her much joy, from the small cabin the family rented in Bigelow Village in the 1960s to her condominium overlooking the Bigelow Range where she lived every winter for over 40 years.

Known as Gran/Grandy by her grandchildren, Natalie was extremely proud of all four of them and their accomplishments. Her athletic prowess and love of time spent in the mountains and around lakes was clearly passed down through the generations as the whole family enjoys varied outdoor physical activities. She hiked to Bash Bish Falls to attend grandson Carter’s wedding, rode on her first snowmobile at the age of 90 to attend grandson Jence’s wedding at the Stratton Brook Hut, and traveled three miles by boat on Shin Pond to granddaughter Emma’s wedding.

She followed granddaughter Rachel’s through-hikes on both the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail with great interest and admiration. Last runs at Sugarloaf were shared with her daughter and two of her grandchildren and their spouses just over a year ago.

The family gathered this past Christmas as four generations, including her great-granddaughters Alice and Eleanor Terry, enjoyed sharing time together in Rockland.

Natalie is survived by her daughter Sarah Carlson, of Farmington, twin brother Don Rines, of Waterville, daughter-in-law Pamela Terry, of Rockland; grandchildren Jence Carlson and his wife Katherine, of New Vineyard, Emma Carlson and her husband Jake Risch, of North Conway, New Hampshire, Carter Terry, his wife Emily and daughters Alice and Eleanor, of Milton, New Hampshire, Rachel Terry and her partner Dan Lechner, of Portland, along with several nieces and nephews.

Natalie was predeceased by her older brother Fred Rines; her son Geof, her son-in-law Barry Carlson; and her husband Tim.

Plans for a gathering in Waterville will also be formed as soon as the situation with Covid-19 subsides.

God blessed them with a wonderful daughter, Christine, and son, Michael. At the age of 31, Roger gave his life to Jesus, his Lord and Savior, and Roger asked God how he could serve him. He graduated from Baptist Bible College in 1989 and was called to be the Pastor of First Baptist Church, of Harmony. Roger loved God’s Holy Word. He loved reading, preaching, and teaching from it. His favorite past-time was climbing into his Jeep with his “sweetie” next to him, playing Chrtisian Country music, and heading out on an “adventure” to find a new dirt road, always hoping to see a stream, waterfall, or a moose.

He is survived by his mom, Wilma Jackson; his wife and best friend Jeanne, whom he lovingly called “his sweetie;” his daughter, Christine (and husband Bryan) Austin, and their two boys Brett and Tyler; and his son Michael (and wife Lindsay) Jackson, and their son Brady and daughter Charlotte. He attended Kingfield schools, graduating at the top of his class from Kingfield High School in 1954.

Norm studied business administration and accounting at Husson College, in Bangor, from 1955 to 1956. He then returned to Kingfield to work at Knapp Brothers, the family auto business.

Choosing to enlist before the draft, Norman entered the Army in 1959, thinking he would at least get to experience living in a warmer climate during his service. He trained at Fort Dix, in New Jersey, and Fort Benjamin Harrison, in Kentucky, before being assigned, ironically, to HQ Co., US Army, Alaska, and served the rest of his active duty time at Fort Richardson, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Norman married Carolyn M. Woodford on October 28, 1962, and together they raised two daughters and two sons. In 1966, Norman and his brother, Clinton, bought Knapp Brothers, Inc., from their father, who had been a co-owner and then owner of the dealership for 40 years. They expanded and operated the business until retiring in 2006.

Norman served on the town of Kingfield planning poard, was a corporator at Kingfield Savings Bank and later served on the advisory board of Maine National Bank’s Phillips branch. He joined Mt. Norm spent many years as a corporator of Kingfield’s Webster Library and acted as president of the board of trustees for 13 years.

In 2005, Norman and Carolyn relocated to Fairfield to be closer to their children and their families. Norman enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially at his camp on Hancock Pond. His many interests included music, old vehicles, tools, boats, target practice and working on his wood lots. Extremely generous and ever industrious, Norman was a devoted family man who was always ready to help others. He possessed a dry sense of humor and was an ardent supporter of taking the scenic route. Norm was known to mischievously cut cake or pie crookedly so he would have to return to “even it up.” Norman was much loved and will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his parents and four infant grandchildren.

Norman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn; children Jennifer Bernier and husband Daniel, of Waterville, Amanda Bressette and husband Scott, of Oakland, Roger Knapp, of Skowhegan, and James Knapp and wife Kathy, of Sanford; grandchildren Kathryn, Benjamin and Samuel Bernier, Gavin and Matthew Bressette, Barrett, Abigail, Joshua and Joseph Knapp and Dawson and Parker Knapp; brothers Malcolm Knapp and wife Carol, of Lynnfield Center, Massachusetts, C. CARROLL CARON

WATERVILLE – Carroll Caron, 62, of Waterville, passed away suddenly in his home on Friday, April 3, 2020.

Carroll was a loving father and a dedicated businessman. He boasted an unparalleled energetic spirit which came in handy while keeping up with his children in their younger years. In fact, they may have had a hard time keeping up with him! He was the storyteller-after-dinner kind of dad; animated and always making sure his children knew they were loved “to Pluto and back,” as the moon was simply not far enough. Taking over his father’s business, ‘It’s A Good Pizza,’ in Winslow, in the early 1990s, Carroll successfully owned and operated the Winslow based shop nearly 20 years, bringing him even closer to his beloved local community where he grew up.

His many diverse passions included music, drumming, running, and various sports. A self-taught drummer from an early age, he went on to play in several bands including The Imposters. Drumming followed him everywhere and, unfortunately for neighbors and his family, was not the most peaceful of instruments. Deeply inspired by RUSH, he idolized Neil Peart, a world-class drummer whom he’ll perhaps now finally get to meet.

An inspiration following one of his many foot surgeries, he was encouraged to walk, however Carroll being Carroll, walking turned into running in no time. This led to some of the best years of his life as he developed a thirst for running, exploring his new passion everywhere; around town and in local road races and marathons, most notably finishing the Boston Marathon, twice. He spoke of wonderful memories of Gilly’s Gym where he spent time weight lifting and training with Ernie Gilbert.

Other interesting activities followed, including biking to Bangor and back, running 26.2 miles around a track, completing the Mount Washington road race several times, and roller blading 40 miles on his 40th birthday, just to name a few.

His love of professional sports also extended to attending small town football games in Winslow as he looked forward to the fall every year when the season started.

Carroll is survived by his children, Justin and Brittanie; brother Paul, sisters Lisa and Pauline; ex-wife Bernadette; and many loving grandchildren; nieces, nephews

JAY P. HAWES

WATERVILLE – Jerry “J-Jay” Patrick Hawes Sr., 45, of Waterville, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 13, 2020. He was born on Wednesday, December 18, 1974, in Waterville, a son of Daniel Hawes Sr. and Thelma Dempsey.

Jay attended Waterville schools, where he played basketball, football, and was known for being a crazy, mouthy, smooth talking, sweetheart. He also went on to play basketball in college, which he always took great pride in. As he should have, because he was a rock star on the court.

He had a never ending love for the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, and his idol, Michael Jordan. Jay loved making people laugh. He had a joke for any and every situation. There isn’t one person who Jay met that he hadn’t made laugh. If you met him, there was no way you would ever forget him. He was witty, fast, smart, and was there for anyone who needed him. He enjoyed playing basketball with his boys, watching sports, playing video games, fireball, and women! No matter the occasion, Jay was always the life of the party. His laugh was so infectiously contagious, a sound that will live on in so many memories, for so many people. There are no amount of words that would begin to express how much he will be missed. There was no denying how much Jay loved his Mom.

He was a Momma’s boy through and through. Jay lived for his children and grandchildren. Messing with them woke a bear in him that no one wanted to see. His girls had him wrapped around their fingers since the day they were born. His boys were his big men, and he will always be their biggest fan. When Jay looked at his kids, you could see his face light up with the pride he felt for all of them. Jay was happiest when he was with his grandchildren. He was always the first one to get down and do whatever those babies wanted him to do.

From the day he was born, his brothers, Pep and Randy were his best friends. The bond they had was unbreakable, and I know Jay was so grateful to have a bond as special as theirs.

He was predeceased by his dad, Daniel; little brother, Toby Hawes; his uncle, Jerry Dempsey; and his grandparents, Nellie and Gordon Dempsey and Anita and Steve Violet.

Jay is survived by his mom, Thelma; his children, Janna Hawes, Nicayla Hawes, Jerry Patrick Hawes Jr., Nicholas Hawes, Jacob Hawes, and Monica Foss; his grandchildren, Nytaliah May Carter, Aria-Lynn Ann Murray, Layla Jo Ferland, Aleah Nichole Cressey, Emerson Leigh Ferland; his siblings, Sheri Hawes LaVerdiere, her children Angela, Jordan, Brandon, Alexis, Abigail, and Brayden; Kelly LaChance, her children Nikki, and Ceara; Randy Hawes his children Brady and Alex; Kathy Kennedy, her children Ryan, Jenna, and Tyler; Daniel Hawes Jr., his son Daniel, and spouses; his former wife and mother to five of his children, Billi-Jo Goodwin; and a very good friend, Christina Scanlin; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and an immense amount of friends.

All future services for Jay will be announced as soon as they are able to be held. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Giberson Funeral Homes, and Cremation Services, in Madison and Bingham.

DIANE M. GODIN

MADISON – Diane M. Godin, 58, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at her home following a brief illness. Diane was born on February 17, 1962, the daughter of Richard P. Plourde and Vergie E. (Norwood) Plourde, their third child of five.

Diane attended Skowhegan schools and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1980. Diane was very active as an officer of her class and continued to plan and support class reunions for several years. She attended her first year of college at Mankato State University, in Minnesota, and completed her degree in childhood development at the University of Maine, Orono. Diane graduated Cum Laude in 1986 and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Diane married Larry Godin in 1982. While working their way through college, they also raised two daughters, who were the center of their lives. After completing college, Diane placed her career on hold to follow her husband to Greenville so he could start his dream job in forestry. Together with both of their family’s support, they built their first home in the little town of Beaver Cove. In 1989, Diane and Larry moved to Madison where they have lived since, raising their family and sharing life with extended family members in neighboring towns.

Diane worked a variety of jobs throughout her life and volunteered in support of her children and her community as a Girl Scout leader, a member of Hospice of Somerset County and a Princess in the Red Hat’s Society. Diane worked as a young child and through college at Dick’s Market, her family’s convenience store. She often stated, “If you stood on a milk crate and you could reach the cash register, you were old enough to work.”

Diane worked in a variety of municipalities starting in the early ‘80s and in 2001 she was appointed Registrar of Deeds of Somerset County by Governor Angus King. Diane was then re-elected for three successive terms. While registrar, she efficiently redesigned the office space and operational practices bringing the department into the 21st century, always keeping the taxpayers in mind. Diane was instrumental in bringing the county’s records into a digital format and she was a leader in the charge of those efforts at the state level. As a manager, Diane was an advocate for providing opportunities to young women struggling to find employment.

Diane was an incredibly talented individual. She was the go to person for her extended family whenever someone asked the question, “How would we do that?” She was a seeker of knowledge in any topic that interested her. She poured that knowledge into practical use and enjoyment as a seamstress, an artist, a genealogist, a chef, a home renovator, a plumber and a craftsperson. Diane was bold, informed and passionate. Good, bad or indifferent, you knew what was on her mind.

Diane’s greatest passion was her family. Diane and Larry were each other’s best friends, travel mates and loyal supporters. Her daughters, Terri and Katie, were her purpose and her soul and her granddaughter, Charlotte, owned her heart. Diane was so very excited to know that another grandchild was on the way in September. She enjoyed the simple things in life, a backyard BBQ and swim in her parent’s pool, a campfire and overnight on the island at Wyman Lake, a good book or movie and a new recipe for dinner.

She was a champion tennis player, a true terror on the court, but also a very good sport, and accumulated more tennis (and running) trophies than one can reasonably expect to display without feeling extremely boastful. She was a mainstay of The Washingtonians Ski Club, a social ski group that meant the world to her and her husband. Connie holds the unofficial record for the most trips to the Swiss/French Alps out of the group. She also loved to cross-country ski, in recent years at the Quarry Road Recreation Area, in Waterville.

Finally, she was an avid gardener, a respectable golfer, and loved both gourmet cooking and international travel.

Connie volunteered for many charitable organizations, serving on the Board of the Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area, the Alfond Youth Center, the Waterville Boys & Girls Club, and the Thayer Osteopathic Seton Combined Auxiliaries (TOSCA). She was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church UCC, in Waterville, and chaired the Christian Education committee there for many years.

Connie was predeceased by her parents; as well as her brothers James L. Reid, Jr. and Jeff Reid.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Dr. John W. Towne; two children, Allison DiMatteo, of Saco, and Nathan Towne, of Waterville; and two grandchildren, Anna and Simon DiMatteo.

A celebration of Connie’s life will be held at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Waterville Opera House, where she very much enjoyed watching her family perform, or a hospice organization of your choice in Connie’s name so others may experience the peace she experienced in her final days and hours.

MARTIN H. MURPHY

OAKLAND – Martin H. Murphy passed away on March 7, 2020.

He leaves behind his wife, Beatrice MacLean, of Oakland; a daughter, Katrina Murphy of Port Orchard, Washington; two granddaughters, Kaleigha and McKenzie; a mother, Judy Metzroth, Port Jervis, New York; two sisters, Lisa Holmes, of Waldoboro, and Stacy Jones, of Port Jervis, New York; various aunts and cousins; a daughter-of-the-heart, Jennifer Morrison and her three children, Daniel, Conor and Owen; a son-of-the-heart, Eric MacLean and his three children, Jaime, Amara and Deva.

Martin graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1985. He was a member of the Olympic College class of 1995, where he graduated with distinction. Many were lucky to call Martin a friend. He was kind and generous, often spontaneously paying for the purchases of someone behind him in line just because. He was a man of strong emotional attachments and made sure those whom he loved knew how much they meant to him. He was well respected for his contributions at work where he was a valued colleague and mentor.

A loving husband of 22 years, Martin was a source of support, peace and fun and always provided a listening ear. Those who knew him will keep his memory in their hearts as a reminder of how to treat others. His only complaint was our society unfairly ignores or stigmatizes those who struggle with mental health. Like many others, Martin feared his struggles would make him look weak to others or that discussing his challenges might add to another’s own burdens. Martin’s belief and the legacy he leaves behind is that we make it okay to talk about the struggles and sadness we all face and that doing so might be a gift to others and make the world a more kind and gentle place.

Make it okay to talk about sadness. That would be the gift to the world that you could give to people like Martin. Be kind to those who deal with depression. They are the strongest people I know as they go through each day with sadness and still find a way to help others cope with their challenges.

No funeral services per Martin’s request.

An online guestbook may be signed, and memories shared at www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 26 Church St., Oakland.
